This company is awful. My sister and I decided to try air BNB instead of getting a hotel for our trip to the Hamptons. We had a great time but on our way home got a call from the landlord claiming she was missing 75,000 worth of items from her home. Mind you this is about 19 hours after we got a text from her telling us that the home was left in great condition. Her items included jewelry, a hat collection, purses, and shoes. Mind you again, four girls drove to the Hamptons in a 2013 Chevy Cruze and had 4 suitcases, 4 duffle bags, 4 purses, and two bags of shoes that we brought on our own. Initially not thinking that this woman was possibly making this up to claim insurance money we are of course frantic and cooperate with air BNB who tells us that the land lord must submit a police report, which she does. The report takes three weeks to get and in the meantime we are being harassed by the landlord who is contacting us through social media threatning to email all of our contacts to "expose what we have done." My 17 year old sister also got a call to her employer from someone who called from a New York number, hung up, called back private and then told her manager that she could not be trusted with money. Fortunately my sister has worked for this company for three years and the manager disregarded the call and gave us the information of the person who called. We finally get a call from a detective who tells us that the landlord is claiming that items in the photos we took while on vacation look like items that were potentially hers he also flat out tells me that he doesn't believe the four of us took anything, he would look into two other people we were with, and that burglary is an option but it makes sense to investigate the people in the home first, makes sense. Some of those items included diamond earrings one of us was wearing in a black and white photo, a hat a gentleman is wearing in the same photo, a purse in one of our photos, and apparently a black halter my girlfriend is wearing the landlord is claiming looked like one of her "missing items." So we send an appraisal form and a bill of sale to the detective for the earrings and let him know that we have time stamped photos of the halter top and the hat in several photos posted to social media time stamped before our trip, and offer to provide proof of purchase of the purse in question because it was purchased right before the trip as a gift but as well, is photographed and posted to social media before the trip. After that email was sent none of us, including two people who were suspects, were contacted whatsoever, instead we get an email from air BNB almost three weeks after claiming that they received a report with item missing claiming up to 48,500 dollars (which is quite a smaller amount compared to the 75,000) and a list of suspects and will be claiming my sisters security deposit of 2000 dollars. No one has been charged or found guilty, and apparently just because the land lord submitted a report she gets 50000 dollars and we lose 2000. Air BNB says that they do not need to prove that we stole the items and that because the detective did not write down that burglary was an option that we can be held responsible for the 2000. So yes, they do not need proof to take our 2000 and to pay the landlord 46,000 dollars. Although, we provided proof that items she was claiming were hers, are not, and were willing to provide proof for any more items in question apparently it doesn't matter. Also, after my initial talk with the detective, none of us heard from him nor has air BNB provided a copy of the "report", just that we have 10 days to pay 2000. Not sure how this company is still in business and are having a lawyer look into the details to see if there's anything we can do. After reading the million other complaints about how air BNB has a million terms and conditions were assuming they are somehow covered but we're looking into it and at least want to warn potential buyers that air BNB is not worth the stress or money, is a scam, and to stick with hotels.
