My son had been throwing up for 8 hours. I had not been to General since the remodeling. They told me I could park in the red to get him in. They helped him in so I could park. He went straight through triage to a room in the ER. His nurse was fantastic. She was new to ZSFGHTC, but she knew her stuff. The doctor was equally compassionate and caring. Thank you, General Hospital

In Emergency by the A section a nurse by the name of EVALINE is a real human <3 I know everybody works together and they have a great team yet in my almost everytime visit I see her do way more. I am at the room and she does desk work, patients, hygiene , and breaking people with their lunch breaks again desk work, rushes . Wow! I am amazed at how so efficient and fast paced she is! God Bless Her. Had to say it :)

I am a travel nurse and broke my foot while bike riding. Although the wait time was long, as a nurse I know this is due to acuity of patients being seen. The staff was very friendly from the minute I walked in. Security, triage, admissions, and the ER nurses were all lovely and had a great attitude. All this while being yelled at, chaos in the waiting room, and high rates of patients checking in. Thank you all for being so kind!

The service itself was great - nice people, prompt attention. The aftermath was a disaster.

The ER charged ~$11,000 for an ambulance ride, an x-ray, and treatment for a dislocated shoulder. My insurance covered most of this, but I still owed 10%. Needless to say, I didn't expect to owe $1,100 for a dislocated shoulder.

The billing is completely insane. The first (and largest) bill I received a couple months after treatment - about $9,000. It was definitely a shock, but I paid my co-insurance and there were no further issues.

The second bill for ~$2000 I received *a full year* after treatment. This bill has been nothing but problems. My insurance paid most of the bill, but paid less on some of the items (this is common - insurance negotiates rates for certain services). Instead of accepting the insurance company's rates, they tried to collect all the remaining money from me. I couldn't get through to their billing department. I called my insurance company and they ended up topping up the payments, so I thought this was resolved. I paid my co-insurance and I never got another bill.

4 months later - a year and a half after treatment - I get a notice from a collection agency. Seriously? Well, at least the collection agency has a phone number where someone actually answers the phone. I now have to provide them proof of payment from my insurance company. Wow.

In short, SFGH is a hospital with incompetent administration. It's no surprise to me that our hospital systems are failing after my experience at SFGH.

Went here for a mental breakdown, but Marcus Zuckerberg took me under his wing and nurtured me back to health. He is very attractive and has a great personality once you get to know him. Although he does sometimes appear a bit inhuman...like a lizard or something lol

I feel really bad to must to comment in here today...

I feel really bad to must to comment in here today. Because the most of the doctors and nurses of that hospital plus clinic they do their best to help us patients plus to try to make them the most confortable possible.
On June 2013 I had an apendicitis surgery and I was admited to the hospital all the nurses were amazingly good to me. Very into their jobs. Cheking on me periodically plus being extra nice trying to make me confortable asking me if a needed anything.
There was a nurse named Julia apparently from Portuguese backgrond, since the begining she was not very nice to me. She was treating me in a very rude manner since the begining when I did ask for a pill to sleep when I told her that I have fibromyalgia for that I need the pill to sleep Julia just was lauging of me and she did not gave me the pill to sleep for that I keep bothering her to get that pill and I never got it the next day she told the nurses that I was a pain in the ass the all night but she did not explained to them the reason I was a pain in the ass. The last day of my stay at that place the doctor told me in the morning that he needed to know that my nausea was away in order to discharge me. He said wait until 6pm. At 6 pm I ask the nurses to call the dr to ask them if I can go home or not because they were changing shifts nobody listen to me. Finally a nurse told me I had to stay one more night because the doctor left and he did not discharged me. Julia(nurse in charge of checking on me the night before was arriving and she got upset because I was to spend another night at the hospital and maybe she had to take care of me that night) she took vomit from another patiente in a jar and emptied it all around the toilett on the floor when she saw me getting up to go to the restroom. I steped over the vomit that was smelling like hell and she left laughing. I tought that she did that to make me leave the hospital that night. Imagine me still with nausea trying to make a big effort to make the nausea from the surgery away and she doing that to me. I almost vomited again. When another nurse call the doctor he came and trying to cover Julia for what she did to me he just discharge me but before that incident no doctor showed up to discharge me even if I called them many times. That is insane how a bad nurse can make the life of a disabled patient miserable in that hospital but I am most surprised how supervisors help that bad nurses to cover it. That night I did asked to talk to a supervisor and she/he never showed up
Firstable they should not discharged me because I was still with nausea from the surgery and second I feel bad because the good and fine job that the Phillipino and latino nurses do there with us and that bad apples spoiled all thet good job. By the way I am latina and I feel shame for them regarding treating patients. Of course they have a due date to complaint but sick people is busy recovering without time for complaints. I strongly believe in karma. one way or another life is going to make them pay.

Giving this hospital a one star rating is being ve...

Giving this hospital a one star rating is being very generous. This is a prime example of what happens when a system gets too big. My doctor had been prescribing MScontin for pain management of my severely arthritic hip. Before the replacement surgery I made a list of all medications I was taking at home. So far, so good right WRONG. I received none of the prescribed meds my primary M.D. had written. That in itself would have been tolerable except for the MScontin, which is a time released morphine, I had been taking the MScontin for approximately 8 months, so I was dependant. None of the nurses took the time to listen to me as now I'm going into withdrawal. It.was the worst situation EVER. Nausea, vomiting, headache and flu like symptoms occurred. Not to mention I ate nothing for 3days. The nursing staff didn't give a damm, I think they thought I was a druggie looking to get high. They actually told me all my symptoms were because of my surgery, one even told me my home prescriptions were not the problem, that I needed TUMS and anti nausea meds. Let me tell you going through t h e hip surgery was bad enough and now I'm going through withdrawal on top of it. I got to the point of just wanting to die. There was a steady stream of nurses, social workers, and others coming in and out for 3days. I finally had to email my primary doctor to let him know that these people were killing me. Finally a pain management expert came to see me and IMMEDIATELY knew the problem. I told him I had wished he had a come sooner, but this was the first he was told about it. Within a few hours I started started feeling normal again. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO SFGH FOR ANYTHING EVER,ONLY CLINIC APPOINTMENTS. There are a lot of other hospitals in this city,PLEASE USE THEM STAY AWAY FROM SFGH.NEVER AGAIN,NEVER AGAIN,NEVER AGAIN.

Out of no where I start getting bills saying my account is past due, even though I called in months prior and asked to pay whatever I owed and thought it was taken care of. Now I've been calling for 3 days, probably called about 150 times, and have been transferred to a recording in the billing department every time. I just want to pay my bill, and they won't let me (oh and they overbilled me, still have to get that taken care of). So disorganized.

Well considering it s part of San Francisco public health, I mean usually you hear public healthcare and you run, like, nope, I found the my caregiver who is a Nurse practitioner is better than quite a few Doctors I ve seen in many years, even better than a Doctor I ve seen from UCSF. I feel the caregivers wether their Doctors or Nurse Practitioners, you get the bedtime medical care. Thorough, everything is done in the clinic your in except for ex-ways mammograms, and on occasion you get your urine and other results the same day, of course only on certain circumstances, but still their pretty quick. Blood test results the next day on The My CHART App. The Best..

Worst ducking hospital!!! Bills are outrageous, doesn t add up. Nurses are careless and some times can be mean. My friend had to wait 9 hours for nothing, he came in with a stab wounded and they didn t even clean or do nothing he was just in the bed. We waited 8 hours; keep in mind during these hours we keep bugging them to do something. It shouldn t have taken that long, the wounded could get infected the first hours we came in. BAD BAD BAD HOSPITAL

On Monday, January 21, 2019 a friend of mine was taken by ambulance to your hospital. I arrived shortly afterward and was at his side until he died two hours later. I am writing to say that I was both greatly surprised and greatly pleased by the high level of competence, skill, professionalism, and empathy that I found in EVERY member of your staff with whom I interacted. (Nothing like the chaos, confusion and clumsiness one sees in television ERs). This made an otherwise terrible situation bearable as they comforted me during the loss of a friend, while at the same time displaying a level of professionalism that seemed to come naturally and easily for them all. To name a few, I would like to recognize, commend and thank Dr.Bukowski in the ER; Nurse Riska David on the 5th Floor; Dr. Andreas Mitchell of Internal Medicine; Dr. Meghan Jobson of Internal Medicine; and Social Worker Anna Keaney. You are lucky to have them, and I thank you for having them on duty when I was going through a difficult experience that would have been unbearable if not for each of them. How is there no way to pay your bill online?

How is there no way to pay your bill online?

How is there now way to pay your bill after hours through an IVR phone system?

Your billing department is a relic. Pay in person or by mail are the two options on the bill. Really? Take the money you spent putting Zuckabergs name on the building and have a hackathon to revamp the hospitals billing. It doesn't have to be cutting edge, just this century would be nice.

The ER visit was great. I was well taken care of. But everything about the administrative process afterwards has been a hassle.

So this is all about parking there is lots of parking for disabled ppl but the funny thing is that all those parking are taken by employees with the disabled Platinum. I have been sitting in the parking lot waiting for about 45 mins now going to be an hour and no one has moved that really bad for employees abusing the system and people with disabled cannot find parking. I know this for a fact because I seen employ come out to smoke or whatever to do and they went in they car so that's why am saying why is it OK for general hospital to allow it.. it's not right!!!

Never trust this doctor(Seidman,Dominika)to do you...

Never trust this doctor(Seidman,Dominika)to do your medical abortion or any kind of abortion cause I went in 9-15 to do a medical abortion cause my son was not gonna be able to have a healthy life. So trusted her and end up findin out in 12-17 that I had a piece of plastic that is what the lab test showed me. And in those two year time I had menstrual cycles would last 3 to 4 weeks talked to doctor and nothing then got sick around thanksgiving found out that something was in my uterus. Then went to doctor hospital in modesto ca and they told me two weeks later that it was a piece of plastic. The worst thing ever so never ever trust this womam to give you an abortion and if you do make sure 2 to 3 weeks later to get an ultrasound done to see if she left anything behide trust her at your own risk.

I have never seen such a lazy uncaring, uneducated, immature, emergency Department staff and that goes for all shifts. I think the new building went to their heads and now they can lounge around and say "Follow up with your primary care physician." they say that about everything. My friend had liver failure and they said "Follow up with your primary care physician." He died a month later.

When I called to ask for a wait time they said they aren't allowed to give it out. When I got to the emergency room I was very unsure if I was in the right place, despite the big "EMERGENCY" sign on the door because the design does not look like an emergency entrance & I've never before been to a hospital where you have togo through a TSA-style metal detector.

They said they can't check insurance or anything like that at the front like most hospitals.

The waiting room was small, dirty, & smelly. It's more pleasant to sit in the bathroom then the waiting room. When the nurse called me back she was going through questions so fast it was hard to understand what she was saying. When I answered her questions she kept interrupting my answers to ask the next question. It's like she wasn't listen & didn't have the time of day to care for patients.

The nurse said they couldn't do anything for me until I pee in a cup then knock on the door when I'm done. The main reason I came to the hospital is because I can't pee. After about 30 minutes of trying, I knocked on the door. Every time they answered they wouldn't talk to me. I didn't know who to go to for help & was not fond of the atmosphere there so I left to take a Lyft to Marin Hospital.

Most hospitals in SF are terrible for emergency, but this one is the worst experience next to SF General where you sometimes wait 6+ hours & never get seen. Go to Marin if you want to be seen faster, have a better cleaner atmosphere, & better treatment.

Doctors and nurses are very knowledgeable and cutt...

Doctors and nurses are very knowledgeable and cutting edge with the newest treatments. I have had extremely professional experience with staff, although I had an unfortunate experience during a long (7 week, 2 surgery) stay. A very judgmental nurse, without a doctor s order, decided she didn t like me leaving twice a day for a 15 minute smoke break, so she retaliated by removing a 20 cm. tube delivering pain medicine directly to my heart, after having my entire deltoid muscle aggressively removed days before, leaving me in anguishing pain. I required the need of a pain specialist who put me on the right track again and was able to control my pain in an acceptable manner. He was very knowledgeable and compassionate. I strongly urge anyone who is experiencing acute and severe pain that is not properly maintained to request the services of a pain specialist. That is my only complaint. A quite severe one but nonetheless the actions of one rouge individual who also lied about having pulled the tube. I awoke from a nap with the entire 20 cm tube laying neatly on my chest. She was the only one that was in charge of me that day. She suggested that in my sleep I so violently rolled around that I had managed to do this myself. A necessary lie as I mentioned to cover her act as she did this nefariously without a doctor s order and with her consistent complaints of me smoking twice a day. She told me that a person with my level of pain should not be able to tolerate leaving my bed for 15 minutes to get outside and especially for smoking.

The postpartum side of General hospital is bad. Unprofessional, lack of experience , super rude and inattentive. Only nurse who was professional was Priscilla. Other than that we were treated horribly , my husband and newborn son have bug bites, it took about an hour for them to respond to the remote control emergency calls. I ve never been treated sl poorly at a hospital , if it weren t for my sons health i would never come back. - Tais

Very disappointed in the ER psychiatric staff at General Hospital. My 45 yr. old daughter went there with a panic attack today and waited over 5 hrs. She did not see a doctor or receive any services as far as I can tell.
I called the ER as my daughter is on SSI, has no phone and is homeless. Their response was to inform me that she "was not on the board", they had no record of her being there and this was after I called 3 times and spoke to 2 different staff persons.
She's been a patient at SF General on previous occasions and this lack of empathy and basic health care is appalling. I live out of state and have made yearly trips to the bay area to help my daughter with her medical/psychiatric needs. What does it take for the health care profession to provide her with the medical care she deserves and needs?

I've always had pretty good experiences at SFGH, however today was my first time having to fill prescriptions at the outpatient pharmacy. I couldn't believe the pharmacy staff was so incredibly rude. After being belittled for not knowing the specific terms they use for a prescription assistance program I was referred to, I left the drop off window in tears. Once all my registration and eligibility was taken care of I was told it would be 45 minutes before my medication was ready so I ran an errand. When I returned it still wasn't ready I was going to go sit down to wait. Before I could turn around and leave the window my nose started running, like obviously running! I asked the girl if I could have a tissue and she responded in a way that implied I was insane to ask for such a thing, "we don't have any tissue here!" I asked where the nearest restroom was, she waved her hand kind of behind my right shoulder and said, "over there, just over there." When my prescription was ready instead of calling my name she just pointed out into the waiting area calling, " lady, lady!" I so just wanted to snap back at her while checking out but kept my cool though I will admit when to the transaction was completed I did not say "Thank You." Assistance program or not, I will avoid this pharmacy in the future. The only reason I have 3 stars is that I couldn't find a place to rate only the pharmacy and every other interaction today has been pleasant.

Only Trauma 1 hospital in SF and when you need it that is all you need to know... My code name was Trauma Alpha and the team did a wonderful job of quickly figuring out my case, assessing my needs and getting me to the right care resources. The environment is intense with many patients in hallways or rooms in various states of duress and difficulty but throughout the professionals in my case were clear-headed and correct in their directions about my condition. Of course I cannot thank them enough but I want everyone else to know that this place is a great resource for the city that much of the time remains under-appreciated.

Just received a plea for financial help "Who answers the call?", in, of all places, the Los Angeles Times. I'm very sympathetic to the plight of these big budget-constrained general hospitals, who's ER takes the place of a decent health care delivery system for many, many people (we'd trade our mish mash of convoluted Medicare/Blue Cross coverage in a heart beat for what we have in Spain). We have a grand daughter who now must go to the new UCSF Medical Center, less than a mile away, for organ transplant rejection testing and it's striking that these two medical centers are LESS THAN ONE MILE APART. Wouldn't the operations of both be considerably rationalized through a merger and joint operating agreement? Why does it make sense, for example, for SFGH to maintain a big cancer treatment presence when the new UCSF center prominently features a huge cancer center? These hospital mergers are quite common. Why not here? Having served on the boards of two quite proximate community hospitals that we were able to merge, our experience was all positive. Might such a change help deal with the way-too-frequent complaints posted in the Reviews, while preserving and the making of an easier life for the excellent medical staff. The conversion of general hospitals to teaching hospitals is also quite common. Finally, would Obama Care help support such a merger? Since the SFGH website map does not even recognize the existence of UCSF-Mission Bay, doesn't this speak volumes about the likely hood for cooperation? Who's in charge at the state or county level in overseeing the rationalization of issues such as this?

Horrible service. Called them and they did absolutely nothing to help after waiting more than an hour and talking to two different people. Both people I talked to were uninterested and unwilling to help. First person I talked to simply said "I don't know" after I asked a simple question. He proceed to put me back on hold for another hour after saying he would send me to someone who could help. I talked to the "supervisor" after a long wait, hoping he was more helpful than the first person. Sadly, it was the same story. Uninterested and didn't even attempt to resolve my problem. Poor support, especially during a pandemic where almost everything is done through calls. Be expected to wait if you call at a reasonable time, but please don't expect to always have your questions answered, even after hours of waiting.

I was taken to the trauma centre on 9/13/2017 for level 2 trauma from a collision between a car and my motorcycle. From the moment I got there, I've received nothing but immediate attention and professional care from the trauma team and ER. Even after it was pretty obvious that I was going to be stable and fine, I still got relatively timely care.

I haven't gotten my bill yet and while I'll probably spending my next few paychecks to cover the bills, I'm happy that SF general did everything they had to do. Also, they've got some pretty snazzy medical equipment, not gonna lie

I had cancer treatment coordinated through SFGH and given at SFGH and UCSF Hospitals. I was not admitted to SFGH until treatment was finished and serious side effects set in. When first admitted I had 24 hr nursing care at bedside. As i got a bit better I was moved to a ward one floor down- still with excellent nursing but not sitting right there.
I was quite far out of my mind and apparently extremely insulting to the excellent medical staff. I remember none of it. My treatment for severe burns and pain was life-saving and gentle despite my evil disposition. There was a high level of expertise and caring at all times.

The first time I had an encounter with this place ...

The first time I had an encounter with this place was when I was told to get a follow up from an ER visit at another hospital. So I did my diligence and called. There was a really rude lady who transferred me to another rude lady who barely spoke any English though I pressed one for English. She spoke so fast I couldn't understand anything and she kept interrupting me. She set me up with some appointment over there in some department and I couldn't understand which one so since she was from financial I just assumed it was the same department. Well, I'm doing a little better and I'm not made out of money so I wanted to cancel my appointment today. I just called a few minutes ago a really rude lady answered the phone, laughed hysterically in my ear for about 15 seconds before transferring me to an endlessly looping robot. Resulting in getting nothing done. So here you go SF General, here is my cancellation since I can't seem to get a hold of someone nice who speaks clear English.

If you are in need of urgent trauma care this may not be your best option. The ER moves so slow, distributes false information to patients, doctors disappear for hours, communication is also very poor. Horrible billing procedures. If you have PPO health insurance try to avoid this E.R. and go elsewhere. ZSFG does not have any formal relationship with insurance companies so they will charge a patient's insurance the maximum rate legally allowed and stick the remainder on the patient. This leads to a higher cost than elsewhere in the city.

So I'm waiting to be seen at the emergency waiting room at Zuckerberg General Hospital for about 3 hours. I haven't had anything to drink. The only water fountains available to patients in the waiting room are out of service. When I ask staff where can I get drinking water to help with my dehydration, one staff member suggests going to the mens restroom and drink sink water. When i asked again another staff member reluctantly goes to another room to retrieve a cup of ice water. This fiasco took about 10 minutes. I was furious of this whole ordeal.

This has turned out to the hospital visit from hel...

This has turned out to the hospital visit from hell. The treatment I received during my visit was mediocre at best. The worst part was the billing on the backend. The long and short of it is, they ended up sending me to collections for $150 (my copay) while Cigna and the hospital reconciled the balance of $7K. I never got any notice from the hospital once they reconciled the balance so I wasn't clear what I actually owed. The billing department NEVER answers the phone. They never return your phone calls. I had to pretend to be a lawyer calling the legal department to get a live person on the phone. Once you get someone on the phone, they are polite but unhelpful. They won't put your account on hold while the insurance company resubmits the claim. You basically have to pay the balance or risk being sent to collections. My advice...Avoid visiting this hospital if possible. Demand to pay your copay during the visit. (Don't wait for the billing to be reconciled.) When calling the billing department, hit the prompts to call the legal clerk who can then transfer you to a live person. This was a really unpleasant experience. I really don't understand why it happens to so many people who visit this hospital.

Arrived to register and get paperwork in order, I ...

Arrived to register and get paperwork in order, I thought as a matter of compliance with the bureaucracy that runs the hospital.
But from the start I was given the run around where patient registration, sent me to another registration section, then to bldg 10, fifth floor for enrollment, then to records, then back to registration, where eventually someone offered to get me processed properly, but - because I was in the middle of another line, I insisted "what about these people in front of me" because despite my own physical discomfort, my conscience and ethical values required me to be fair. As they to needed to be helped.
Anyone else would gladly take the shortcut to bypass the red-tape, most people could care less about their fellow human brings. Like the other homeless persons in line, stinking up the room and being rude to innocent people next to them, waiting for services.

Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm outdated, but someone has to believe in what is right and live up to it. Other wise what are we, less than human beings out for our own selfish needs? Like animals with technology?

Took some pics, waiting to get my prescription filled, this is the courtyard of Zucherborg General Hospital, it used to be San Francisco GH.
I had to lurk around the corner of the building to the motorcycle parking area to burn a cigarette, in a discrete place on the quad.
Lots of cute girls/women seem to be working here, until their tattoos peek out from under their clothing.

That's all for now, need to dip into my SNAP benefits, because I haven't eaten all morning. Cold food, probably a liter of soda and a bag of chips, l wish that I could steam some broccoli and carrots. But I don't have a stove, and I need to make my food stamps last.

Agree with other reviewers that this hospital "takes" your insurance but it is out of network for most medical insurance. They also say that because it is out of network, everything in this hospital is more expensive. The billing office makes confusing bills and doesn t work with insurance company to clarify the bill. The billing office does not answer phone calls in stated business hours. A lot of other unprofessional or questionable communications. Avoid this hospital if you can.

You won't get decent reliable medical attention in the emergency Dept. Sub-standard staff mostly, outdated equipment, lack of adequate basic supplies ( for instance, for simple wound care, among other things). I could go on but don't want to relive some of my worst memories. Especially since the entrance is set up like a prison...worse than airport security... All bags, pockets dumped, searched, huge delay while they're wasting your time looking for....what? Weapons? Drugs? Terrorists?... It's demeaning, disrespectful, in convenient and insane!
I find the individual specialty clinics such as wound care, urology, podiatry, etc more adept at providing necessary health care. However, don't expect to find a competent primary care provider in Family Health clinic. They're living in the dark ages... Understaffed, overcrowded, overbooked, long waits, chaos, old smelly outdated offices/ examining rooms (building 80 should be condemned). Zuckerberg's name on new building does nothing for.me... except, yeah...a decent restroom, which is in short supply in old buildings which have useless restrooms for disabled in wheelchairs. PS... Of most SF hospitals.... General's cafeteria has mostly overpriced mediocre food... Too bad, since it's a nice cafeteria otherwise.

General is a true diamond in the rough, I was brought here completely paralyzed on my right leg, not able to walk and in excruciating pain and I was triaged, roomed, had all my imaging done in less than 4 hours. Final verdict was a ruptured L-5 vertebrae.

Awful experience here!! I laid in the ER with hardly any attention for 18 hrs before getting admitted to a room. I had a broken knee and a bleeding head injury that wasn't taken care of for 10 hrs. There were NO PILLOWS in the entire hospital the 3 days I was a patient. Nursing staff was minimal, but I had one that was wonderful (Adena). I would suggest avoiding this hospital IF you have a choice!!

@ Emily-- Your daughter waited for 5 hrs in the trauma center because SHE WAS having a PANIC ATTACK and there were people that needed treatment for major life threatening trauma. Panic attacks are not life threatening, but, they are very scary for the patient. FYI, 10/10 times if a patient is critical they will get treated immediately. If you go to the ER and are waiting for a long time that is a good thing, it means you are not that sick or injured.

I'm a local and lived here for 9 years and have not had an issue with going to General Hospital in fact I had to go there go for an emergency and they saved my life! They get 5 stars for saving my life. This place and the staff rock.

I can only imagine the craziness it must be to work there. Much respect.

I really appreciate the folks in Trauma center and in the entire hospital. I hope the new additions to the hospital really help make it more resourceful for all people that need their care and attention.

It is unfortunate your trauma surgeon became a political spokesperson instead of simply doing his job by treating patients and reporting the facts.

This incident, which wasn't a mass shooting, has nothing to do or is in any way similar to the shootings he mentioned.

It is sad he tried to use this domestic violence incident as a political tool.

You should be very cautious about visiting this hospital for healthcare because it seems they cannot remain objective.
