I was taken to SF General after being in a car accident I could not breath well and had pain in my arms, back, hip and legs. The paramedics determined I needed to be seen at a trauma center and diverted me to SF General. A doctor came in, stood about three feet from the bed and asked to see the seat belt sign, then turned and walked away, telling the nurse over his shoulder to get a CT of my chest. I was in severe pain and barely able to take a breath. I tried to talk to him, but he just ignored me and left. Hours went by and I sat there unattended. I asked twice for ice, when the nurse came into the room for supplies and he refused. His second response was, "NO! Why in the hell are you still here anyway? They should have gotten you from x-ray hours ago. He pushed the bed into the hall and walked off. I never saw him again. Eventually someone from CT came and took me for a scan, then returned me to the wall. I had an IV that the paramedics had put in and it had gone dry, but was still connected. After another long period the doctor returned and said, "Your CT is clear, you can leave." I said, " I need you to examine me. I cannot raise my arms, my back and leg are hurting and .." He cut me off and said, "Look, your not bleeding and you don't have any broken bones. Just go home. You'll feel worse tomorrow." Here's some prescriptions for pain." At that point he THREW the prescriptions on the bed and walked off. I was stunned and speechless. A female nurse nearby came over and removed my IV and told me to get dressed. I was sitting on a bed in the hallway, along with dozens of other patients lined up against the walls. Some told me they had been there for hours and hours, with no one checking on them also. I asked the nurse where I could get dressed in private and she pointed to a tiny little closet bathroom in a trauma room, where there was a patient and his family. I was barely able to stand and walk, because of the pain in my leg and back. I limped into the room and started to try and get dressed. it was so small, I could barely turn around in the space between the toilet and the sink. There was an accordion door that did not lock and just as I started dressing one of the family members of the person in the trauma room walked in on me. It took me a long time to get dressed, because I could not lift my arms without pain. I had excruciating pain in my elbows and my hands and wrists were numb and tingling. My shoulders both hurt as well as my lower back and groin area in my right leg. I managed to get my clothes on and went out to the waiting room to call someone to pick me up, as I had no way home. I had been there since about 1 PM and it was now late in the evening and dark outside. I am guessing it was probably about 9 PM. During the entire time I was there, no one ever came in to check on me. The doctor, if you can call him that, spent less than a minute total in my presence and never examined me beyond looking at the seat belt sign from three feet away. He never talked to me and flat our refused to examine me. I don't know how they can call SF General a first class trauma center. Personally, I would rather be taken to a veterinary hospital than SF General. That was almost five years ago. I am now permanently disabled and barely able to walk. I have damage to my spine and my right leg is turned completely sideways. My attorney got a copy of the bill which was for $17,000. I cannot work, have no insurance and have not been seen by a medical doctor. I need an x-ray or MRI, but cannot afford to pay for it and no doctor will see me with Medicare alone. Maybe I am lucky in the long run, because if that poor excuse of a human being, posing as an ER doctor had actually treated me, I might be dead instead of disabled. My advice is, put a note in your car that you would rather be taken to a dog and cat hospital over SF General. Any hospital with a jerk like that man on staff, should not be in business, pretending to care for people.
