If the operator transfers you to speak to the electric department and a woman (didn't get her name) answers be prepared to speak with the least professional employee that works for CU in Springfield mo. Our coversation lasted less than 30sec and she had raised her voice, was hateful and tried to tell me it's my neighbors problem that a tree is still sitting on a power line and damaging my home.. When I asked how is it my neighbors problem when the tree has to be cut by city utilities and reminded her it's on a powerline,. Her temper got worse as she retorted she's awair cu has to cut it and then snapped it's tree service dept. and transferred me to a voicemail.

So frustrated with this companies unwillingness to even give me a 2 day extension on a cut off notice. A friend told me you can request a 1 week extension on your bill or a shut off notice 1 time. Having a disconnect notice for the following day that was a sigh of relief.
However, after calling and initially being told yes they give extensions, turned around and told me he couldn't because i was already pending and they had to have 24 hr notice..and i was calling right before 5pm but that's still technically 24 hours before. He acted like his hands were tied and there was Nothing he could do. CU is a F'ing monopoly period and we have no otyer option but them for utilities. They can charge whatever, tax interest on late or passed due bills, and continue to charge you for service when they shut it off. ! Sad and frustrating when I'm a single mom of 3 who just bought her 1st home 5 months ago whose 1st bill included utilities for 2 houses ... The rent house i left and the house i bought which was over $1,000. I'm sure they could have done something if they really wanted to. He just asked me how much could in pay. All i needed was 2 days until Thursday to get paid and couldn't even get that.

Wow thats a lot of bad reviews. I bet if you offered prepaid service, alot of these arguments would be halted. At least people would know what they are going to pay and if it runs out then its out. But then you wouldnt be able to tax that 10% you guys put on peoples bills. And yes I asked about it and was told thier policy doesnt allow them to offer prepaid service. So I cant prepay, I cant change companies if I dispute a bill, and if I call in to try to figure it out, I get told that I either pay or they cut me off no exceptions.

I would like to enjoy having the ability to pay my utility bill with the convenience and ease provided by a computer. I would enjoy being able to write down my password and username, and be able to use this month after month with ease and of course the comfort of my own time. I would like to not have to worry about automated phone systems too sensitive to handle the slightest whisper of the wind as it gently caresses my drapes, blowing them with a soft rustle into my office area. This automated caller would preferably give me options, and not assume the sweet, breezy "ffffwwwwwwssshhhh" of my beautiful beige curtains in my fifty shades of beige business time arena means I am saying RESIDENTIAL SERVICES, IF YOU HAVE A GAS LEAK-"

I'm ahead of myself. I apologize. You see, these things I wish for cannot possibly be, because I have to attempt to change my password monthly. It turns out that no matter literate my discourse, no matter my level of education, no matter the fact that I WROTE IT DOWN; your company simply cannot handle the idea that I want to give you money for the pride, privilege, and first world beauty of binge watching Hulu and squeezing out a chocolate hostage for the area fish from time to time.

City Utilities is my monthly period masquerading as agency of good. You're bleeding me to death, causing headaches, you make me angry, I break out in zits and you're just standing there going "Honey, I don't care if you pay me to fetch it. I work 16 hour shifts. I'm tired. Go get your own ice cream."

I'm Fry, I'm Fry, TAKE MY MONEY, I'LL STOP EATING BACHELOR CHOW FOR YOUR PRODUCT, and you mom are selling me a cell phone designed to kill me.

I would LOVE to pay you for my bill. But you change my password when I don't log in all month and then refuse to let me reset it. You monopolize our area, refuse to acknowledge other sources of power that could lower our bills and free up extra hamburger money for our bloated economy so we could give our employees better pay rates and then cannot do something as simple as service.

SERVICE. SIMPLE, FRIENDLY, NO ERRORS IN HEARING SERVICE.

Why am I paying you to service me when I can't get off?

We do this every month. I despise you. Your terrible people , because "corporations are people too" and I have to remember to treat you with same respect as a tweaker trying to sell me a bike for $2,000 that cost $500 that has been sanded down and painted and renamed "Horse." The extra $1,500? Oh, that's because it's a custom horse. One of a kind. Only available on West Side.

WHAT ARE YOU EVEN OFFERING? FIX YOUR SYSTEMS. ALL OF THEM.

When a person needs a password reset, send them a temporary password that works. When they want to pay a bill by phone don't assume the garbage disposal is a corporate account.

Grow up baby, and go to college so you can read this review someday.

But be careful, because if the wind moves a curtain it may mean someone is talking, and if the world find out you're hearing voices from the curtains...

Well, corporations are people too. And yours is a goddamn schizo.

Well where I am from there are 5 utility companies to choose from! CU'S problem is they always have had a monopoly on the way things are. As a reviewer said competition drives better customer service they are forced to give better CS when it means you can leave and go elsewhere.
During the 2007 ice storm I heard them say that they were starting utilities back up like you never lost power to not reflect a difference in billing..........huh? 10-15 days without power is a very significant difference in my bill but besides the point.
Usually in any bigger town you have competition to make the best decision for yourself and not forced to just deal!

Can't City Utilities find a way to keep us informed? Text me. Let me know if it will be 3 hours or 3 days. Are you even working in my area? Who knows?
Very poor communication from CU.
CU first, customers last.

Our debit card had the 3 digits on the back change and apparently, it declined on the auto payment, so city utilities gladly collected an extra $25 from us. Thank you so much! I don't know if anyone else is curious to how much city utilities is screwing their customers out of! They are in a law suit now over billing to much. I think i will look into filing one myself.

Was on hold for an hour today and when I finally got in touch with someone they were incredibly rude and abrasive with me. I wish I would have gotten her name. City utilities has been giving me the run around since I first set up with them. And in time of crisis (COVID-19) they are doing NOTHING to help people. At all. It s truly saddening and pathetic.

yesterday we got a call saying our service was goi...

yesterday we got a call saying our service was going to be disconnected if we did not pay the bill. my paycheck was FIVE days late and that's why I couldn't pay it on time. when they called us, it was literally 5 minutes before the center closed. we tried to call back to set up some sort of arrangement to avoid our power being disconnected. when we called back, they were closed. we also did NOT receive a disconnect notice in the mail. so when we called this morning, the woman told us that because the disconnect was already scheduled, she couldn't help us (which I know for a fact is not true, considering how many times I have avoided getting my power shut off in the past). she also told us that we should have called sooner, even though when they decided to give us the notice, they gave us no opportunity to call back. today on my lunch break at work I cashed my check and went to CU. the woman I spoke to was extremely nice and helpful; I wish I could remember her name. she looked up our account and told me that they hadn't shut anything off yet, and if I paid something it would be canceled. I paid $100 at the kiosk outside, went back inside, and the woman told me that that payment was enough to cancel the disconnection. I went back to work feeling SO relieved. but when I got home, around 4:15, I had no power at all, and it was blazing hot in my apartment. I was absolutely livid. I drove as fast as I could back to CU, thinking that they closed at 5, but no they close at 4:30. it is my fault for not looking up their hours, but what kind of business closes at 4:30, when people are just getting off work? doesn't make any sense. anyway, I got on the phone, waited almost an hour on hold, and finally spoke to another woman, who was also very helpful. she said that the account states the power was on. she put me on hold, called someone, and in one minutes my power was restored.
the only reason I am giving 2 stars is for the women that helped me with grace and kindness. but CU has been and always will be absolute garbage. this whole situation has been so extremely stressful for me, and I have wasted a lot of time trying to get all of it figured out. thanks to the ladies who did help me.

My dad constantly has issues with these people. And because he has a trachea, they get rude on the phone because they can't understand him well. Then he pays the bill only to have the power lost at the most random of times like on a sunny day without a single cloud in the sky. If there was another option for him to have these services he would switch in a heartbeat. Worthless in my opinion, bad customer service and bad service for him in general.

Just received a collections on my credit report from CU of Springfield. My husband and I have not lived in Springfield in almost 7 years nor did we leave any bill unpaid. With a forwarding address I should have received a past due notice. Norhing of the sorts has ever been delivered. Not to mention the utilities were in the landlords name, so how can it be I that owe you? It appears from my experience as well as most other reviews, this company has some deep pockets they are trying to fill at the expense of it's residents both current and past.

Paid my bill online with their EZ Pay, right? Well, City Utilities didn't bother to even try and take the money out of my account to pay the bill, so the next month I had a $40 late fee because the city messed up. I called and don't have to pay the fee, but I understand why CU has such low ratings.

I set up a payment arrangement on their website du...

I set up a payment arrangement on their website due to increased expenses due to an upcoming move. When I went back to confirm the date that the arrangement was set to pay the 2nd half, I was blocked out of the Payment arrangement page because of an OVERDUE BALANCE. I spent almost an hour before concluding that this plage that I was suddenly denied access to was the only place to view the information. I hope my memory is accurate on when I "think" it may have been.

UPDATE:
I had intended to bump my rating up to 3 stars because less than a couple of days after I placed my initial review I received a call from a very helpful individual. He went over the payment plan dates with me, set up for the address to be changed and I thought that everything was all set.
I made sure that funds were in my account for the day of the upcoming payment and assumed everything was fine. Fast forward to yesterday 04/29, I log into the website to see it showing nothing paid, my account showing 5 days overdue with no mailings having been received but I knew it would be any day that I'd get a shutoff notice.
I call in to try and put a stop to it before anything can happen. The representative that I spoke with this time was the polar opposite of the man that had called me previously. He talked down to me the whole time, was very rude, acted like I was supposed to know and understand all of their policies by default. He tells me that a PAYMENT ARRANGEMENT is only a PROMISE TO PAY but that it's not "THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO RUN THE PAYMENT" When I tell them that absolutely no one else had told me this he clearly thought I was just lying. Oh well, water under the bridge. I get home as soon as I can after work and make a payment right way for MORE than the amount that he said was due over the phone. Again I assume everything is fine.

Fast forward to today 04/30 I get home open my mailbox and find a shutoff notice dated for 04/30. Now I understand that it takes time for mail to arrive but I literally live a block away from the damn building that they bill out of and the pending shutoff is dated for TODAY.
Again, water under the bridge, I'd taken care of it in the early afternoon yesterday.
WRONG AGAIN

I just looked at their website, confirmed that the funds were taken out of my bank account, the site even shows the amount that the shutdown notice said I was supposed to pay as paid. Yet the site still shows me as overdue and is showing THE LATEST BILL as outstanding!
If it were possible to recommend any other company I totally would but oh, they don't have to try because they have a Monopoly on the whole area.

UPDATE 2: I have fallen on incredibly hard times and I went into the building to explain my circumstances in person. I am severely overdue yet they have shown great empathy with the severe circumstances and have been working with me far more than anyone would anticipate. The website is still a bit archaic, however under normal circumstances it is generally good enough to get the job done. The people I spoke with at the building were also quite nice and accommodating.

They like to shut off people's services especially on days of all days it's going to be cold, its circulating that this family got a shut off notice for a lousy 127.04 bill when they paid 200 of it when that should of been sufficient, but no a family of 6 one adult n 5 kids they shut it off right before Halloween when it's going to be cold, even ocac has refused them due to insufficient funds, city utilities got people with deep pockets, you would think they could help a family out just once but no, they are cold hearted on a cold what seems to be an early winter's day.

This company is so confusing. Fell behind due to financial issue and when I applied for assistance due to a shut off notice was told I didn't have even though I had been told I did have one and had a physical piece of paper showing I did. Now I definitely have one and didn't get a physical bill to turn in for assistance until the Friday before it's to be shut off. They need to make the process easier to receive help for those in a financial crisis.

Just got off the phone with customer service. It was my third call. Apparently there is no real way to dispute a meter reading on your water portion of the bill. I can show there was a water leak before I bought my house but all they can say is the meter reading showed no change in meter readings the previous months to me buying the house. Now I am on the hook for 18000 plus gallons of water! Apparently no way to present my case either. Just an update to my review. I just bought my house. CU told me the previous water meter readings hadn't changed because the house was vacant for months. My inspection report prior to buying the house showed a water leak at the shut off under the house. It was fixed right after purchasing the house. Why did the previous readings before I bought the house never change. The water was on for the previous owner. A question I will probably never get answered.

Absolutely the most rude and unprofessional people I have ever dealt with. We have shown proof after proof that we no longer live with my in-laws and now a year later we have to show it again because they think we live there and we haven't in over two years. They have harassed my in-laws over and over and we have proved to them time and time again we don't live with them and they still try to keep there power off. They have done this over 7 times since we have moved out and I don't see why I have to show for the 7th time we don't live there. The games are getting pretty old and I'm dealing with my mom being ill with cancer up in Forsythe and they literally have no feelings or remorse . What a pathetic company. They don't care about kids or anything. Such negative people that treat us like dirt. And I will be contacting my lawyer

One cannot contact either City Utilities management or it s so-called Board of Public Utilities via eMail. They prefer telephone, i.e., oral, contact, thus preserving deniability. SnailMail has a way of falling through the cracks.
There are numerous examples of City Utilities having abandoned any genuine interest in trimming limbs, branches, etc., away from power lines. From my experience, the guys who do the heavy lifting aren t as well paid as they should be, have mediocre equipment, and are overworked; while management are overpaid, underworked, and always in their ivory tower undercutting the policies and procedures meant to benefit the public. It s like an upside-down pyramid, with the brunt of the burden on customers and workers and the benefits to a bloated management team.
It is a tinhorn, third-rate, small-minded organization.

Their customer service was friendly, but the company itself and its procedures are so infuriating. If there were any other option for electricity and water in Springfield, I'd gladly use it. The only decent thing about this company is the people who answer the phones, and in my mind they probably don't get paid enough for having to deal with all the angry customers they probably get.

Springfield City Utilities is one of the most unpr...

Springfield City Utilities is one of the most unprofessional companies I've ever had to deal with. I would consider myself a pretty patient and reasonable guy, but I can count on one hand the number of customer experiences I've ever had that were this bad. City Utilities recently had a security breach and my banking information was stolen. It happens. I get it. But if that weren't bad enough, City Utilities charged me a $25 late fee because my payment information was compromised and had to be cancelled. I explained to the representative that since they were the ones that lost my information and I was a victim of their improper handling of my information, it was ridiculous for me to have to pay the late fee. The representative told me that I, "should have been watching my account and let them know that the payment didn't go through so they could fix it." Are you serious? He finally waved the late fee, but then lectured me about how if this happened in the future, the late fee would not be waived. I asked him how I knew that my payment information would be safe since it had been handled so incompetently. He told me that, "it was our 3rd party billing agency that lost it, so we really had no control over it." How is that supposed to make me feel any better?!? I've had better customer service from telephone scammers. Sheesh.

Edit: Ask to speak to Brandon. He's the only one I'm willing to deal with from now on. Super nice guy, very professional. Might be the only employee within the entire God-forsaken company that has an ounce of decency and customer service.

When you work during the day you don't always have the ability to call and discuss things until the last minute. I took off early today to try and take care of a past due . They schedule disconnects 3 days out but are "unable" to change them. Financial difficulties happen and I guess you just have to take it up the rear because changes aren't acceptable. And you wait over an hour for a call back. Amazingly, I called 45 minutes after my initial call, and after waiting another 15, my second call was answered before the callback on my original call.

I called at 10am earlier today and asked if my electric would be getting turned on and if not, how much? She said it was scheduled to be turned on today and that it might be until 5pm before they get around to doing their job. Well it is now 6:57pm and my electric is not on. So I was lied to and this is what you can expect from CU. How hard can it possibly be? I imagine you have some magical switch to flip and you're done. Probably take less than 10 minutes and they don't have enough people with the expertise to figure that out or spend their time doing it. Regardless, this is probably the worst thing about Springfield and I couldn't feel more disappointed about it.

P.S. I forgot to add that it's especially wonderful that they lied to me on a Friday because now I won't have any hope for electricity until Monday. That's just b-e-a-utiful. I love paying these people for all they pretend to do for me. I couldn't be more grateful.

City Utilities hasn't changed. I loved there 30 years ago and I'm so glad we left. My son has had ongoing problems with this company. I'm so thankful I chose to live within an electrical Co-op It's too bad there is no competition in most of the state. I believe in co-ops. I receive a dividend check every year, their rates are awesome and customer service is amazing! Intercounty Electrical Co-op is incredible! They even brought a boom truck to the river near us to retrieve a neighbors car...at no cost to the family. They are simply amazing. If City Utilities could be a co-op, but then they'd have to be accountable to their customers/owners.

This company does not care of others well being...
We had received a disconnection notice less then 24 hours in the mail for the next day. We check our mail EVERY day. The letter was dated a week before, but for some reason we just received the notice not even a whole day in advance. Either the mail was WAY behind or the letter was dated incorrectly.
ANYWAYS... I politely asked if there is a way we could pay half of it to keep it from shutting off, notice we didn t get a shutoff notice until the day before and they said we had to pay the full amount. How does that give us anytime to get money to pay it? In the past they have worked with us before and I asked why we couldn t do that and make a payment plan. Whoever I was speaking with ( which I wish I remember his name) replies, Uh, idk we can t do anything . NOT TO MENTION I HAVE A 5 MONTH OLD BABY. I ve never had this problem in the past.. I m very disappointed and absolutely can not wait to move out of town away from using this company.

They offered a rebate if I changed to a water save...

They offered a rebate if I changed to a water saver approved toilet. I bought two of them and installed them and filled out all the paperwork and mailed it in. When I called two months later to find the status of my rebate, they claimed they never saw the paperwork and said to reapply. I filled out all the forms again and brought them in on the same day, only to be told that I just missed the deadline. They are a bunch of idiots.
Your response indicates the lack of intelligence that I was complaining about in my post. I knew there was a specific deadline. I sent the documentation in with a month to spare. CU's Representative could not find my documentation, but told me that even though the deadline had passed that if I filled out the forms again and brought them in, they would honor the rebate since they didn't know what happened to them. I filled out the forms again, and hand carried them in and they told me they could not honor them because the deadline had passed. They wasted my time twice with their incompetence. Now you want me to contact them again and waste more time listening to them tell me I can't get the rebate.

The robot that answers the phone is so much slower...

The robot that answers the phone is so much slower than what other companies use and constantly misunderstands simple short phrases. I pay my bill with it every month and know that to do so I am throwing away 20 minutes of my life.

Whenever I have spoken to a human they, however, have been quite helpful.

Was late one month because my debit card expired. Called and got it figured out. Setup a new easy pay. No problems. Bill was $73.

Two weeks later, check my account. EasyPay was cancelled, payment never went through for $73, now my bill is $150. This is the absolute worst company I have ever dealt with. Customer support said I was ready and everything was taking care of, turns out my bill has doubled. All the 1 stars make since now for this joke of a company.

Always been helpful. But over the last month I haven't been able to pay online. Website seems to be having problem. Big inconvenience. But everyone I talk to on the phone has been helpful. I had a water leak and they refunded me over $200 because it was on their side.
