I believe I would be a paralyzed right now if I would not have gotten care from UW medicine. I came to the emergency room 6 months ago with the most severe pain I have ever had. It turns out I had a spinal epidural hematoma that was bleeding on my spine and beginning to imitate a stroke. First I couldn't grasp with my right hand and then I couldn't stand on my right foot. All of this happened during my 13 hours in the emergency. They were understaffed and could not get me an MRI until later the next morning. They didn't have an OR available, but still suggested at one point, that I could go home and see if it got better on its own. My cousin happens to be an emergency room doctor and she was called, after I explained to her that I could no longer grasp with my right hand or stand on my right leg, she talked with colleagues she was convinced that I would be paralyzed if they didn't get me into surgery. I was airlifted to UW and they said that when they got to my spine, I no longer had the appropriate "heart beat". They had to remove the blood collected there and restore my spinal functioning. They weren't sure everything would come back since I had been laying like that so long, fortunately for me when they removed the blood, I have not lost any functioning. This of course happened with very little help from PeaceHealth, My family was beside themselves waiting for them to do something. Thank God I have a doctor in the family or I don't know what would happened to me.

Quite possibly one of the worst hospitals terrible patient care most of the nurses show no real empathy or any passion for the work they're doing maybe it's just a soulless corporation like the Walmart of hospitals I'm not sure but unless you're very sick and unable to find somewhere else to go (which is hard as it's the only big hospital near bellingham area which is probably the only reason it's still open) I would highly advise trying to make the trip to another hospital where you will be treated much better.

I usually dread their E.R. but today I swallowed 1/2 of a toothpick & was fast tracked, hence the 5 star rating. And either they got a bunch newer workers or just smartened up because none were rude. At all! They were sooooo kind & courteous.

Probably the worst hospital I have ever been too. The staff, nurses and doctors all seem competent except for some old miserable security guard who wants to take out his frustrations on anyone who crosses his path a real piece of work. However as competent as the staff seems the organization during shift change is pure chaos with zero communication between shifts. I have witnessed and herd so many horror stories about this hospital it s enough to keep me and my loved ones away from ever getting medical treatment here. If you don t really have a choice and have to use this hospital make sure you communicate well with the doctors and nurses on the treatments that you have already done and you are unable to make sure to bring a family member. I really think it s a upper management problem and that they need to have overlapping shifts. Clean up your act guys especially the anal retentive old security guard, the guy is a Stasi. All the reviews on here hit the nail on the head. The staff seems to have a Superior mentality and they really don t seem to care if you live or die, total emotional detachment. This hospital needs to be flushed and rebuilt. It will probably never happen though. I do feel sorry for the good staff members your coworkers are cancerous and need to be cut out. The good reviews on here are obviously staff members. Clean up your act guys.

7 day stay. 6 broken bones and punctured lung......
I can't remember all the names, but everyone from housekeeping to nurses were great....
Service was with smiles and understanding
No one likes to be woke up in the middle of the night but they show compassion and understanding.
I don't want to go back, but if I do I'd be happy under their care.
Thanks to you all!!!
Btw....
Any free in home visits are welcome!

Hospital clean? Nope.

Hospital clean? Nope.
Bathroom: a mess
Cafeteria: Food on the floor, salad bar trashed / empty items, tables dirty ( tried 3 tables before we found a clean one )
Who runs this place and why are they absent?
( a couple of dozen staff sitting around, but evidentially no one cares... diagnosis: not my job syndrome.)
Speaks volumes about Leadership. Pride. Passion. Which is missing.

This emergency room was probably the most disgusti...

This emergency room was probably the most disgusting medical facility I've ever been to. Other parts of this hospital are okay, but the ER was just gross. There was garbage everywhere; half-full coffee cups, bugs, bags of fast food rotting away, used tissues and napkins just left there for hours and you couldn't find a single spot to sit that didn't have a grease stain and a horrible smell. The triage room somehow smelled far worse, though, and no one was enforcing the use of face masks for respiratory patients, so a young man changed seats 5 or 6 times and coughed the entire time with the face mask around his neck, I can only hope it wasn't contagious. In addition, while we sat there waiting, nurses crowded around the security check-in computer to watch a surveillance video of a patient from the night before and very loudly make fun of someone who clearly had a mental illness. Each nurse called another one over to witness the video. Once we were actually given a room for evaluation, the nurses once again gathered right outside well within earshot of the entire hall of rooms to further discuss the video they had seen, watch it again, and even went so far as to repeat the name of the patient at least twice while elaborating on their condition. They then began to make fun of a patient who had soiled themselves, announced the room number, and argued over who has to help them get cleaned up. This was followed by a lengthy conversation about how hungover one of the staff members was, or in her words, "I might still be drunk." I get it, they have a life outside of work, but you should get a handle on your volume because I've never witnessed such unprofessional behavior before, especially not in an emergency room where patients and families are scared and upset and in such great pain, it wasn't comforting to anyone to be treated in the middle of a circus.

Sent my bills to the complete wrong address, never contacted me in any way. found out when I heard from collections. The hospital's response was "oh you're young, don't worry, it'll be off your record in 7 years". Disgusting. Just go to a different hospital.

I have a rare medical condition which requires me ...

I have a rare medical condition which requires me to need iron treatments EPO injections, blood transfusions. I began going to St Joseph in 2006. On 7/31 the appointment for blood transfusions was set up by my doctors office and I was told not to get my type and screen for the blood until the day of my appointment. I arrived at Short Stay unit and they got my blood sample to the lab. The nurse said during the 4 1/2 hours it took for the lab to match my blood to a compatible blood. During this time I hear it would of been better if you can in the day before. After explaining I was told that they (short stay)didn t want me do labs until the appointment. This was stated to me multiple times. I got the first of the 3 units of blood around 12:30 pm around 2:00 pm I was told a blood test was ordered by a Dr Callahan before my second unit. I refused to agree to the blood test because I didn t know who Dr Callahan is. I said if my doctor ordered it I would. It was shortly after saying no than a women come to my bedside and states you don t meet criteria you aren t going to get blood (I was already receiving 1 unit of blood),
your doctors orders are worthless it s what I want that matters!!!!! At this point my husband asked her who ARE YOU She said her name is Dr Callahan from NW Pathology on contract with PeaceHealth with the blood bank.after this statement she my antibodies screen waxes and wanes (fact antibodies test 7/31 negative; last positive 5/24/14) I will have problems getting blood matches in the future because of all my antibodies. She said she had spent 1 1/2 hours reading my medical records but when I ask if she knew how to treat my rare condition she said no. She manipulated me using scare tactics with no regards to how to treat my condition. She succeeded in get me to agree to a CBC. After the test she allowed me to get a the 2nd unit. Then when part way through the 2nd unit I was asked again to get a blood sample for CBC. I declined. I was told by the nursing staff that if I didn t give a sample Dr Callahan would withhold the 3rd unit of blood and I felt if I gave a sample I wouldn t get the 3rd unit. I have been receiving 3 units of blood transfusions for years. In talking to my nurses I began to understand they were not able to get ahold of my primary doctor (office was closed due to water pipe broke), It wasn t until well into the second unit of blood that I was made aware they might need my Seattle hematologist phone #. Gave this to the nurse and Dr Callahan called my hematologist and she approved the 3rd unit. If my hematologist didn t approve I don t think I would have gotten all 3 units that day. On 7/31 we called hotline to the heart and followed up the next day. I spoke with Shawna last name ? She spent 10 minutes telling me the importance of coming in the day before for type and screen. I stated my husband and I are very upset how we were treated she said she can t go against the doctor and back up the actions Dr Callahan did. I received no apologies. I was not happy at her response especially the bawling out I received about not getting labs the day before. I called risk management to find out it was the same person that I talked to the day before. I spoke with Shawna 3 separate times every times she needed to cut our conversation off because she had a meeting or appointments with another person. This only made me feel my concerns and the experience at PeaceHealth doesn t mean anything to them.
Several of my patients rights were violated on 7/31
Considerate respectful care also the right for me to know about my treatments (which changed once Dr Callahan got involved), nurses didn t inform me of all treating doctors they brought in Dr Callahan. Later I found out from my doctors it was thought that I just wanted blood to get to Hct 38 and found out Dr Callahan lied to my hematologist about my antibodies test and how difficult it would be for me. She was intense. This is the type of doctor PeaceHealth backs?

Every time I've been to this hospital, the staff have been extremely helpful and nice during my time of need. When I had kidney stones several months ago, they were kept me well informed of the procedures they were taking, and ensured I was comfortable. This hospital certainly doesn't deserve its low rating!

Had to take my 87 year old mom to the ER day after Christmas. The techs, nurses, and doctors were amazing - professional but friendly, and very knowledgable. They were all over it. And it was an extremely busy day for them - the waiting room was standing room only. But everyone maintained their cool, and calmly provided excellent service to my mom.
I don't write reviews often, but really wanted to write this one. Special shout out to ER nurses Robin & DJ, Tech Lisa, and Drs. Heltzer and Lisa Johnson! Thank you!

We came to this emergency room for a minor injury after hours. The staff was not friendly, the waiting room felt dirty, and the ER appeared overwelmed. After looking at the poor online reviews while waiting we decided to leave and take the drive down to Skagit Valley Hospital ER in Mt. Vernon. They treated us more quickly, staff was friendly, the facility was clean, and had they had a much more organized program. I suggest that Peacehealth ER management evaluate their intake program to improve customer service and speed and quality treatment .

I was treated in the Emergency Department and Elaine, my nurse was one of the best. It had been a huge ordeal until I arrived in her care. She saw not only to my medical needs but helped us out because we were stranded far from home. Everyone else was very professional but Elaine is by far one of their best assets.

It is unfortunate that this is the only hospital close because I have never been more frustrated with a medical provider.

I was referred to a specialist here only to have him not reference my medical history at all, send text messages in the appointment, and remove me from a long standing medication due to him not listening.

I am now 30 days in trying to talk to a human about my astronomical bill with no resolution.

I am sure there are lots of great individual people that work here, but more and more this feels like any other major corporation just looking to squeeze as much money out of individuals as possible. All this when people are in need of medical care and not in a position to "price shop."

I have also already called the hotline that will undoubtedly be posted as a response to this review in their "we care" canned response. You leave a message and maybe someone calls you back. When they did call me back, it was from a blocked number so I didn't answer. After trying again I never got a call back. So, to pretend this is some kind of resolution is laughable.

While I had a wonderful experience in Labor and De...

While I had a wonderful experience in Labor and Delivery and so appreciated the outstanding staff when my daughter was born at St. Jospeh's nearly three years ago, my most recent visit to the ER was not one that ever makes me want to go back in a crisis. My 18 month old daughter was very seriously ill and had a rapid heart rate, high fever and shallow breathing. Being blessed with an extremely healthy little one this was the first time we had ever been into an emergency room and we only did so because the nurse we spoke with on the Peacehealth nurse advice line felt she needed to be seen right away. It was a Friday night around eleven so I knew to expect long wait times and a lot of chaos, but we were actually checked in and seen very quickly and all of the nurses were extremely efficient and pleasant. The doctor we saw diagnosed my daughter with an ear infection and prescribed an antibiotic. She has had severe ear infections in the past and I knew that these symptoms were entirely different, I tried to explain that I really did not think that was what was going on but they completely wrote me off and refused to listen. I mentioned that the nurse I had spoken with previously thought her symptoms sounded like Hand, Mouth, Foot- a common but serious viral illness that spreads among children 1-3. The physician's assistant was extremely put out and so unprofessional- he shined a light in my daughter's mouth for a split second, told me she was fine and that it was merely an ear infection and sent us on our way. The next morning I took her to the pediatric after hours clinic where she was promptly diagnosed with Hand, Mouth, Foot. The pediatrician was very confused as to where the diagnosis of an ear infection came from as my daughter's mouth and throat were covered in tiny blisters that would have been completely visible to the physician's assistant had he simply taken another moment to look. She saw no visible redness or signs of infection in either ear. It is so important to at least hear a parent out who brings their sick child in, communication with your patients is everything in healthcare and is vital to helping people get well. My main thought after this turn of events was what a disadvantage a non English speaking individual, a handicapped individual or someone suffering from a mental health crisis would be at with a doctor who does not appear to care about their diagnosis and will not take the time to listen or understand.

Your billing department makes people suicidal. Why you are completely and utterly incapable of ever sending someone a bill prior to sending them to court or collections or charging them, which is fraud, by the way, of services never recieved is so far and beyond the realm of understanding that I would rather die than patronize your facility EVER AGAIN.

I am surprised this hospital isn't rated higher. We don't come often, but the few times our family has needed care all the people at St. Joe's made it a very positive experience, especially Dr. Pietro a totally awesome person and all of the staff that saw me thru lythotripsy , kidney stones & ER visits. St. Joe's is a blessing!

Myself and others I know have had consistently poo...

Myself and others I know have had consistently poor care (if you can call it that) from this hospital and I think it's about time that I write a review because this hospital is dangerously incompetent. Unless it is a very urgent emergency I would recommend taking the drive to Skagit to avoid this place.

I was taking a medication which turned out to severely damage my memory for several years, which is no fault of this hospital, so I honestly can't even remember specifically all the times that myself, my girlfriend, and others I've spoken to have been mistreated here except those that happened in that last couple years... my girlfriend has a number of medical issues which often require hospital visits so we have quite a bit of experience. I'll just recount the last time I went in, it's not my place to talk about other people's experiences though I was prompted to write this by another case of malpractice that happened yesterday. This person ended up being driven to a different hospital later where they got her in promptly and found that due to incompetence at St. Joseph her problem is much worse.

So my girlfriend was bitten by a dog pretty badly, it bit several times and then clamped down on her arm and left deep puncture wounds. So we ran into the hospital and after about 20-30 minutes of wait in an empty emergency room (there were doctors and nurses hanging around talking and joking around) we were brought back in to sit down. We were then left there for another 20 minutes after an IV was put in with a saline drip. When our nurse came back she gave my girlfriend a couple pills to take which she did not mention what they were. My girlfriend asked what medications they were and it happened to be an antibiotic which she is deathly allergic to. The nurse apologized and ran off. About 10-15 minutes later another nurse comes in and starts hooking up some medication to her IV. Again my girlfriend asked what the medication was, and it turned out to be the same antibiotic that she is deathly allergic to just in liquid form. This nurse apologized and ran off. Fast forward another 15-20 minutes and the first nurse comes in with some paperwork to fill out since the bite happened at her work and the doctor comes over with discharge papers. We told them that the wound had not even been cleaned and that no medications were given besides the two times that they tried to kill her. So they insist that my girlfriend sign the papers with her arm still bleeding, then went off to get someone to clean the wound and find medication. Another 15-20 minutes later a nurse comes in and actually cleans and bandages the wound. The doctor then came in and tried to prescribe a sulfa drug that my girlfriend is also deathly allergic to before finally looking up her allergies and getting it right.

This "treatment" is unacceptable.

In the middle of September while on a cruise ship in Ketchikan I had a massive heart attack and was flown to PH. As soon as I got there, Dr Hines welcomed me and was outstanding in his diagnosis. He explained everything in detail and took the time to help me figure out the best solution which was getting a stent done and being alone in another country without family or friends while going through a near death situation my two nurses Diana and Chris were excellent and made me feel at ease. I didnt even get to bring shoes in all the commotion and they arranged a pair of sneakers for me as well as all my medication sorted before I left. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done.

Visiting grandparents and went into ER with right lower abdomen pain (vomiting and shaking this pain is so bad). Took Ultrasounds of my lady parts, kidneys and gallbladder. Said they found NOTHING and sent me home with pain killers and anti nausea meds. Five days later I m still having excruciating pain and I visit Virginia Mason Memorial ER in my hometown (I live in Yakima) and not even an hour and a half into my visit they found a 9MM DIAMETER KIDNEY STONE passing through my right ureter through a CT scan. Had St Joseph not passed me off without performing a CT scan, I would have been in a lot better shape by now!!

I received emergency services at Peace Health St. ...

I received emergency services at Peace Health St. Joseph Medical Center on 2/19/18. I had rib pain and arrived early morning on that day. There were only 3 other people in the E.R. waiting area, so I figured my timing was good. I had a brief physical exam and a chest x-ray done. I was diagnosed with strained chest muscles. This took about two and a half hours. The physician and staff were very nice to me. My primary complaint has to do with this hospital's billing services. I provided my health insurance information when I arrived. The billing department was notified. The billing dept. contacted me stating they did not know how to bill my insurance. I called Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They told me to tell the billing dept. at the hospital to bill the local Blue Cross/Blue Shield office. I called the hospital billing department and gave them instructions on how to submit a claim. The person I talked to in the billing dept. said she now understood how to process my claim. I found out later from my health insurance company that they never received a statement of the services I received from St. Joseph Hospital.
What I thought was already bad became even worse. I received a bill for my co-pay amount due for these services. I paid this. I later received a message from Peace Health stating that I would be referred to a collection agency if I did not pay this bill (which I had already paid). I sent a letter to the billing dept. of Peace Health protesting this proposed action. I provided them with detailed information which indicated I had paid this bill. I gave check numbers as proof. I never heard back from the Peace Health billing department again until recently. I received a bill from Peace Health indicating I was obligated to pay the entire charges of my E.R. visit at St. Joseph's Hospital. I sent a letter to the corporate office of Peace Health protesting this as well. I was ignored.
I then contacted the Wa. State Attorney General's Office, Consumer Protection Division, asking them to investigate this matter. Peace Health must have been contacted by the Attorney General's Office. Peace Health suddenly had an interest in contacting me.
It appears this matter may be resolved soon. Nevertheless I am going to continue with my request for an investigation into this corporation's practices with the Attorney General's Office. I believe the billing department at Peace Health was negligent in their duties. I believe they also displayed incompetence, as well as what appears to me to be a lack of caring based on their lack of response in consideration my concerns..
I have always been a responsible person in terms of paying my bills. Nevertheless I was subjected to over 4 months of stress as a result of these mess ups. I suppose the message behind all this is that bureaucratic systems are often inefficient. If you combine this with what appears to be corporate greed on the part of Peace Health this becomes a bad combination. I have little choice in terms of the health care services I can receive in this area. Peace Health wields much power in Whatcom County. They are able to accomplish this since they are a monopoly.
I hope I do not have to visit their facility again soon.

I have always thought so highly of our local hospital, but my last experience was so horrible I have lost faith in this hospital. I have never been treated so badly by a nurse (Jesse) in my life as this is a time when I personally did not want to be in the hospital I thought maybe I would be treated with some compassion but she showed me not even a small amount of that. I hope no one else has to be treated like that by a nurse and hope that maybe she does a self check on herself and realizes that her job is to not only help the sick but to do her job with compassion and realize that no patient should be treated as if they are not welcome.

I've been to this hospital many times for chronic ...

I've been to this hospital many times for chronic abdominal pain. Over half of my stays here have been nightmares. I was treated with disrespect and belittled. Nobody took my worries seriously and I was in a state of weakness, unable to speak up for myself. The doctors kept making me feel uncomfortable and I was given an antipsychotic for pain. I began vommiting and my heart raced and I had never felt worse. I couldn't talk but they could see i was having a bad reaction to it and nothing was done. and I am now extremely afraid of hospitals, nurses and doctors. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. There are a few good people there and I thank you so very much for treating me like a human. I asked for pain medicine once and this nurse started saying she didn't hear anything from the Dr about it and I said yes i know because I just now asked. She then lectured me about it and I told her I'd been on it before and knew everything she was saying. She then snapped at me and said "I AM NOT GOING TO FORCE THE DOCTOR TO GIVE YOU NARCOTICS!" and I was so taken aback. I said I didn't ask her for anything yet and she just said Oh. I'll ask. No apology. And the doctor gave me some. I told him about the nurse and all he said was that happens sometimes with misscomunication. Also no sorry. I hate that you are the only hospital around.

While it is rarely a pleasant experience being admitted to a hospital, I will try to set aside my bias here. It is unfortunate that these folks have the market cornered in this area. There is just no justifiable reason why a pulse monitor, three bags of saline water, a blanket, and 2 hours in a bed should cost anybody $2000.

***Update Jan. 2018*** After some research I see that I am relatively uninformed about the economics of our medical system and prices at St. Joe's are fairly standard nationwide. However, if anything, that fact exemplifies how broken the system is and it is still ridiculous that a society with resources enough to maintain everyone's basic health many times over is this late in the game.

Not even worth one Star if not for the pleasant nurse. Wait time was time fine, however misdiagnosed AGAIN!!! THREE days of lost wages. Had they just got the diagnosis right & antibiotics prescribed that night, husband would have been back to work in 24 hrs. It was tonsillitis btw, nothing tricky or crazy out of the ordinary
Third person in 6 days that I know personally who was misdiagnosed in this ER. Get it together PH

Was sent into the er from my doctors office because I was experiencing chest pains. I was given an ekg, blood draw and xrays and the nurse gave me 4 baby aspirin. 5 hours later I still hadn't seen a doctor. When I asked the nurses station how much longer she had no idea. I would have thought chest pains are serious but apparently not at this hospital. This was exactly the reason I told my doctor I didn't want to go the hospital because there is no sense of care for the patients. If this hospital can't handle the amount of people in our community then they need to expand. I'm sure they make plenty of money when they over charge the patients for any type of medication that are given. It's gonna be interesting to see what my bill will be. I wasn't the only person to walk out of there tonight.
Extremely disappointed in the administrators that run this department.

I want to start off by stating I've never had a problem till now. On 5/4/19 I went to the ER with an infection in my hand. I waited 2.5 hours which I expected, but when I get back to a room the PA that was assigned to me stated he could do nothing for me but get me a referral to a dermatologist. So I call the dermatologist to set up an appointment and no referral. So now I have this severely infected hand, no appointment, but you can guarantee I'll have a major bill from the ER and for what? Not sure.....

Rude, dismissive, and shaming staff. Horrible heal...

Rude, dismissive, and shaming staff. Horrible health & safety standards (see my picture of the open trashcan full of vials, IV bags, and sharps next to my bed). Incapable of organizing files and billing.

Here's my full story:

I went here when I was dizzy, fatigued, and was getting intense migraines. I told every nurse/doctor who saw me that I have been anemic in the past. I was ignored every time.

They took my blood FOUR separate times, collapsed three veins, and scolded my sister (who was with me) for asking them to try consolidating their tests into fewer vials. They tested for various diseases, but never for iron-deficiency. The doctor told me I probably had meningitis, and that he wanted to do a lumbar puncture. I didn't have a fever, I could bend my neck, and I had no light sensitivity... Essentially no symptoms of meningitis. When I said I didn't want the lumbar puncture, he shamed me saying, "This is a deadly, infectious disease and you don't want to treat it?".

Also, there was an open plastic trashcan sitting next to my bed with a USED IV bag filled with a mysterious red liquid, a coffee cup, and some used needles. No sharps container. No biohazard bag. It was completely disgusting, and there was no way I would allow the doctor to do a lumbar puncture.

I went to Seattle's emergency room the next day, got a single blood test, and was diagnosed with severe iron-deficiency anemia.

Don't go here if you can avoid it. The staff (at least from my experience) is rude, dismissive, and quick to shame you. Health and safety standards are completely ignored. They bill incorrectly, letting my bill go to collections before sending me one in the mail. Finally, Seattle Children's Hospital couldn't obtain my blood test results from them because they had already "lost" my file.

There's some good nurses here, but some are very rude. Suddenly I started getting treated very differently by all nurses after I got into an argument with a nurse assistant about whether or not I was allowed to leave the hospital. She told me they would call security on me if I even tried to leave the hospital wing I was in. This was after her telling me I needed to get up and walk around more. I wasn't on a psychiatric hold or anything like that were they could legally hold me. Her nor anybody else would explain to me what legal grounds they thought they had to hold me. Now apparently someone put some kind of note on my file and now the nurses treated me like I'm a jerk after that. Just because I asked why I couldn't go outside.

Also god help you if you lose track of time (since they didn't write the time of the last dose on your board) and request your next dose of pain medication early. You will get labeled a drug abuser in their system and they'll harass you every day about it and fight you every step of the way in getting the pain medication you need.

I just had a situation where I probably should have gone to the hospital, but I risked my life and additional organ damage not to because of the way I get treated here.

Also medical marijuana would have been greatly beneficial to my treatment but they'd rather you use opiates then shame you as a drug abuser for using opiates. Opiates dramatically increased my healing time due to them grinding my digestive system to a halt for a long time. I wanted nothing more than to get off them, and got treated like a heroin addict the entire time.

I also just recalled one visit where I overheard nurses openly talking about what a joke HIPAA is and how they should all go stop by x patient's room and check out their weird medical issue.

Go to Canada if you want to complain and see bad. I have nothing but praises to give to this hospital, the cardiologists, emergent care, the nursing staff and doctors that have saved my 85 year old Mother's life. She's been going here for years. Love this place.

Wish they could give minus 5.
Went in for a rash on my 4 year olds nose.
Was told 2 MDs just came on,should be about an hour.
We saw a young girl who had been there over 2 hours loose the tip of her thumb, she had been forgotten. People with Diabetic issues leaning over their wheelchairs, one older man with a Palsey issue and a high fever left to suffer in the ER waiting room.
The place was filthy, and my son found a rubber glove on the window sill.
Also 3 hrs I will never get back.
These people should be ashamed

First time I have been admitted to the hospital, since I was very young. I was having shortness of breath and feeling weak. Decided to get it checked out so headed to the ER. Was helped as soon as I walked through the door. I always find the doctors, nurses, and staff, to be very professional and courteous. Within an hour, I was in a hospital bed and treated. Everyone on the 4th floor, gave me amazing care and was well respected. Thanks Danielle. Highly recommend this hospital. Randy Heffner

If you are having a mental health crisis, avoid this er at all costs(if you can). Most staff are very impatient. They don't listen too well. They act if you're a waste of their time. They'll try and force medication, that you have refused, down your throat to make you sleep. I did give this a two star, because my most recent event, I had taken some medication, that ended up being to much. I was rushed to the ER. Only because I was rushed in by an ambulance was I able to receive a room. There were people in beds, lining the walls, being ignored and mistreated. (I've been one of them myself) I was told I would have died if I hadn't gotten in within the next hour and a half, but they still took over 40 minutes to get me the medical attention I needed. So, I was laying in the bed, dying, whilst nurses were on their phones, giggling. Only positive was that when I was finally started on some medicine, after 40+ minutes of agonizing pain, the staff were switched out and much nicer.

This establishment is an absolute joke. If I could rate it zero stars I would. I refuse to even call it a hospital because at a hospital people receive medical care. It is my sincerest wish that this establishment be shut down and put out of business, and a new hospital be opened in Whatcom county not owned by Peacehealth.
Next time I have a medical emergency I would literally rather die on the side of the road than have to endure Saint Joseph Peace health Emergency Department again.

A family member had emergency heart bypass surgery here. I found the Cardiothoracic (heart) surgeon Dr. Thomas, the Cardiologist Dr Zaragoza, the PAs including Laurel, Nurses including and Respiratory Therapists to be excellent. They were skilled but caring. They saved my family member s life, and I am thankful to them.

If you can make it go to another hospital. They will bill you for there service then every person that comes and sees you will send you a personal bill as well. I also showed up there at 11:30 at night and they charged me a overnight fee and 2 days in the hospital. As a note I have great insurance and even still the bill was ridiculous. Highly do not recommend.

Horrible experience from start to finish. I'm not...

Horrible experience from start to finish. I'm not even sure if this place deserves to be called a hospital. I am not from Washington, but we were visiting family. I possibly was having an ectopic pregnancy, which was my reason for being there First of all, I have AHCCSS (AZ Medicaid), and the girl at registration wasn't sure how to process the insurance. . It took 4 hours to just get my blood drawn. The flabotomists didn't know how to draw blood (they weren't drawing from the right areas). It took another 3 hours to get called in, and within 5 minutes the PA was telling me the urine results of a urine sample I had not yet given! Then they did an ultrasound (@ 11:15 pm) and said it would take between 45 min and an hour and 15 minutes. Three hours later we got tired of waiting and asked for the discharge papers without knowing about the radiology results, when the PA told me that it was their fault for at least 2 hours of the wait because my results were never sent to the hospital radiologist and that they had gone home at midnight! So without asking me, they sent them to a radiologists center in Seattle, and said that they would call me with the results. As we were walking out, the PA runs down the hall to tell me they just received the results and everything was okay. And, just when I thought the nightmare was over, I return home and receive two Bill's totaling over $900. My insurance plan covers out-of-state emergency room visits. So now I will have to call both the hospital that I never wanted to deal with again and my insurance compant to try to straighten things up! If you have the choice, just drive to Seattle for any health care you may need. This "hospital" was very disorganized and all of their staff members lacked the empathy and concern for their patients that any other true hospital has.

Sunday night. ER experience... Coming to ER, we we...

Sunday night. ER experience... Coming to ER, we were promptly "logged in" to their system. 15 minutes later a nurse saw my spouse and administered pain drops to alleviate the pain. Thereafter, we were asked to wait at reception. 30 minutes later (!!!) we asked on what the status was - were told that we are "second in line." Another 20 minutes later - we were told that "a bed is being prepared for you." A BED?! We told them that we don't have all the time in the world to wait HOURS for doctors while occupying their beds... We were told that there is "no way around this."

Observations... Nurses running around yelling patients' first names. Other nurses coming out and saying to them that so-and-so is already with other nurses. As if watching a comic show... People being wheeled in to be admitted who came 30 minutes after us. Slow and disorganized process it was. And my wife and I were "FORGOTTEN!"

Upon leaving the ER (could not sit and wait any longer), we asked a nurse to put another set of drops into my spouse's eye and told them we are leaving. She did. But would not give any drops or anything "to go." Yet, she made sure to implant FEAR into my wife's head - "it's NOT going to get better!!! It's your EYE after all!!! You WILL get worse if you leave and than you will BLAME US!" What the h@#$ is this woman saying - I thought? Is she cursing us?..

In large letters in admission hallway was a sign that read that "every person deserves compassionate treatment, etc." - we did not receive any of that as employees were frantic and put too many people in front of us who came way later than we did...

In Conclusion... 1.5 hours in ER - was it worth it? NO!!! The WORST ER experience in my entire life!!!

Pregnancy Story: I was having contractions for abo...

Pregnancy Story: I was having contractions for about 12 hours when I went in to the hospital. I had called ahead of time because my contractions were 3 min long, every 5 min, for an hour. They told me to go in. I went in and the person who "checked me." told me to go home and come back when my contractions were 1 min, not 3min. I went home and an hour later collapsed on the kitchen floor from pain. My hubby immediately took me back. When I got there another lady "checked me" and tried to send me home bc I wasn't dilated enough. She "couldn't find my cervix." I said I wasn't going home and demanded to see a doctor. He came in and checked me and said I was 8cm dilated! Thank goodness I didn't go home again, even though an hour earlier I shouldn't have been sent home either. If you can't find someone's cervix, ask for someone else to check don't just send someone home. And my contractions always lasted 3min, they were never a minute. so the fact that they abide by that rule is ridiculous. I had been having contractions since 7am and finally got in a room around 9pm. Super disappointed bc my son's heart rate had plummeted and had i been monitored sooner this would have been caught. he had to be vacuumed out immediately, no time for c-section, and the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. Just ridiculous, my son almost didn't make it bc of their ignorance. He could have had much better care a lot sooner. I would have sued their butts off had something happened to my son and I was turned away not once, but twice! Needless to say I'll be heading to Seattle when baby #2 is due this Nov.

The doctors, when allowed to see them, were really pretty good. The nursing staff mostly were rude, esp nurse managers who are supposed to be problem solvers. The hospital manager who participated with palliative care in searching my daughter's room against her wishes, looking for food items, called in 3 security guards before she would meet with me To Hear MY complaints. I am a 58 year old, 5 feet tall woman....I mean come on...the clincher was when we were seeking support through a chaplain, she was one of their "team" and was of no help in any way. Very scary when you put your child's life in their hands and they won't even allow you to be at their side. Management at this place is ridiculous, which will keep quality care givers from being employed by them. Cliques should not be part of the health care setting. The good nurses kept their heads down to fly under the radar. They will be lucky if they aren't sued right out of business within the next 2 years. Every time she got a good doc, he/she would be rotated off her care and we would start all over with new one. Same mistakes over and over until they got familiarized with her and realized her uniqueness. Did I mention they sent my daughter home to die twice? Thank God for good docs elsewhere. She is alive and getting better every day, no thanks to St. Joseph hospital in Bellingham.

After going in for a extremely swollen ankle (I could not walk on) do to pre existing arthritis. I spent the next two hour arguing with a doctor who swore up and down I had gout refusing to take my word for it or test to confirm his diagnosis. finally when they exrayed my foot to confirm the "gout" they returned with the worst attitude I have ever experienced from an so called educated man. He would not give me a explination as to what was wrong, did nothing for my foot, wouldnt look me in the eye, discharged me moments after. leaving me to walk for miles on said ankle not even an ibuprofen or and ace bandage. If I was bleeding out and dying on the side of the road and the only hospital in the area was st Joseph I chose to bleed out that's how bad this hospital is!!

Worst hospital I have ever been in. I was seen for...

Worst hospital I have ever been in. I was seen for and finally diagnosed with infectious pneumonia after the second visit in the same week. I was given something in the hospital to control the symptoms and antibiotics. By the time I got home, the meds I was given in the hospital were wearing off and I spent yet another night almost literally coughing up a lung. Nothing I did at home helped and every time I tried to fall asleep, I kept feeling like I was drowning with this horrible crackling sound every time I wheezed out a breath. The "next" morning (an hour or so later) I gave up on sleep. The pain in my chest and my cough worsened and I started to feel like I was getting stabbed in my back every time I breathed. I waited until my doctor's office opened and asked if I could get in to see her ASAP. She was out of the office until next week. To avoid going back to the ER I tried going to a walk-in clinic where upon examination the doctor there told me my condition seemed "serious" and to go to the ER after all. Reluctantly I went and got the absolute worst treatment I've ever had. I get that there is usually a long wait there since it's the only hospital in the county. But there were only about 5 people in the waiting room when I came in, and not only did I end up getting called dead last (2 hour wait) after several other people came in with lesser conditions and got taken back, they placed me in a chair when they finally did (I could barely even walk and was having a hard time sitting up) and then tended to everyone else that came in before & after me until finally they had a lapse in patients, all the while feeling like I couldn't breathe. I tried to tell them about it, but no one seemed to give a care. They did do some testing and finally after 4 nurses and 2 hours got an IV in me but then kicked me out to a chair in the hallway completely alone while I waited for the test results for no apparent reason. Waited an hour in that chair feeling like I was going to pass out and finally the doctor came and told me I was "fine." When I told her over-the-counter treatments were not working for my symptoms, she basically just told me to deal with it until I see my doctor. Didn't care that my appointment isn't for 5 days...so yet another night spent unable to sleep, and probably several more. Also, when I took my paperwork home (which she did NOT explain to me), it said not only do I have pneumonia, but now I have pleurisy...not getting how that is "fine," but I'm kind of feeling like she was just saying that to push me out the door. I get I was in the ER more than once this past week but I have never had pneumonia, it has been very scary and has come on so fast and unpredictably that I feel I needed to be persistent on it. Unfortunately for me, once again the staff was extremely unprofessional and I feel like I have been left for worse after all of this. I never complained the entire time, but maybe I should have - yet again, it probably wouldn't have done any good anyway.

When I started my career almost a decade ago I tru...

When I started my career almost a decade ago I truly loved my work and being able to help my community. Peace Health slowly took that and when I finally walked out, I had seen Nurses willfully neglect and mock patients, shout at peers in patient care areas, I've seen staff treated with absolute disrespect by peers and by the "non-profit," I've seen dangerous and potentially lethal drug or medical treatments administered, and near losses of life because of issues like infection given to a patient by poor hand hygiene. I've seen and experienced staff have been sent to collections to have their wages garnished because the insurance provided by the hospital was inadequate for staff to go to the emergency room. I lost my own insurance when the hours required to receive them changed, and when I needed to sit in the emergency room it was with medical insurance provided by the state (thank goodness for that), for three hours without seeing a single staff member. The doctors and nurses treated me like I was drug seeking when I had a very acute medical emergency. (Just throw some pain killers at it. Treat the symptoms not the cause and I'm sure the community will be healthy.) I was an employee at the time! I can't imagine how members of the community are treated. New staff requirements are minimal so professionals who worked very hard to get where they are in their career are paid less money than those who are just coming in and are not able to share their experience. (I couldn't pay my rent by the time I left!) The individuals who are being hired to replaces those of us who have left (and one of the reasons that I ended up leaving) show absolute apathy, and seldom appear motivated to help, just to get a paycheck. If you have the ability (not always an option when an emergency occurs) go to a different hospital. If you are being mistreated, ask for a representative to help advocate because if you are someone with mental illness, addiction, a senior, (or anyone!) who may not be able to argue or stand up for yourself in a moment of crisis, it's your right and honestly essential at St. Joes to have someone help you. This place is terrible and an ombudsman is an individual from outside of the hospital that can help protect your rights and your quality of care. (I mean when sepsis, when an entirely preventable and very dangerous bacterial infection that gets into the bloodstream and MRSA infections spread between patients are hospital wide problems addressed by the CEO, then it's a sign that the hospital needs some major changes to provide the same and quality care that our community deserves!!)

Worst experience ever recently. My partners emotional and physical health was gravely threatened due to incompetence by some staff and poor communication between doctors and nurses
He was traumatized by poor care.
Don t get me started about the inadequacy of mental health triage or the electrophysiology cardiac department. All my experiences with peace health have not bee peaceful. Quality staff are leaving due to burnout. My rage has been growing over the past few years and can no longer be silent. This organization needs a major overhaul beginning with the board. I wonder how many law suits are needed to get change to occur.

Unfortunately, my daughter, 5, was very sick and has now been diagnosed with asthma.
We rushed her here at about 2 in the morning September 2018. And they called a code on her and pushed us out, immediately putting tubes and IV s. It was terrifying.
My daughter was in bad shape. And these amazing doctors and respiratory therapists and of course the nurses, all helped my daughter and us. We are going parents and have never dealt with anything of the sort. Our children have always been so healthy.
I pray we will never have to experience something of the sort ever again. But if we do, I would feel super confident taking my precious child to this hospital!!
Thank you for helping my daughter!!

Sadly there are some INCREDIBLE PROVIDERS committed to Whatcom County care but Peace Health Corporation appears to be run by lawyers and accountants and have lost their mission and vision for patients. I have been in this community for 30 years and am not only appalled but saddened by its demise. The sisters are turning in their graves! I cannot determine whether Peace Health is maintaining their Joint Commissions Accreditation. I cannot find any information to confirm they still have it. If they have lost it then it is VERY CONCERNING . I see poorly organized and implemented services. Policies seem fluid and it is hard to get information or determine policies even when I have asked. This breeds mistakes and poor care. I have turned in numerous concerns and complaints in their surveys since 2009 with no feedback except for defensiveness or threats. We are in the midst of a monopoly that does not seem to care about our community. I hope I am wrong but a review score of 2 seems to confirm my concerns. I now choose to go south for in hospital care after several personal and family situations.

The Oncology Department of this hospital is number one in providing care to their patients. From the moment I checked-in I was met with pleasant staff at the front desk. Wait time is less than 10 minutes regardless if the place is full of people. All other staff are no less than professional, from the nurse that takes the vital signs, the check-out and making follow-up appointments, especially Madi, are so great, but most of all Dr Raish, the Oncologist, he s the best. I am so thankful that I experienced the thoughtfulness from these wonderful people.

They remove any negative posts on the E.R. reviews, this place is horrible. It is dirty, unprofessional, they don't listen to you, and when you do get back to a bed, while you are pressing your button for help they are literally laughing at their desk and don't relay any information. The best service here consistently, and the only good employees, are the people who clean the rooms and beds. They are the only ones who listen but they have no medical say. This hospital made me sick and refuses to acknowledge it. And I'm not talking about the flu. Don't go here.

PeaceHealth is not worthy of any stars. Every experience I have had with them has been disastrous. They are in the business of making as much money as possible off the backs of people seeking medical care, care that is a level or two below incompetence. They are sleazy and downright evil with their billing practices. It is really unfortunate that Bellingham's healthcare system is held hostage by these vampires.

The staff here doesn't show they care at all. I waited in the waiting room for four hours and saw people doubled over in pain, people who can't walk, and people holding their limbs close for hours as THEY also waited an incredible amount of time just to be seen by a doctor. Genuinely believe the staff doesn't give a care about anything but their paychecks.

My birth was a breeze thanks to the people a St. Joseph hospital. People fail to understand how the hospital is organised, people aren't being mistreated. The reason you have to wait for 4 hours to get your kid's concussion addressed is because he's not gonna die. But the guy who was just in a car crash and has lost 4 pints of blood will without immediate treatment. If you have to wait in the ER for along time just be happy to know that your not going to die.

Approximately 2:25 to 3:20 pm my slow stay nurse had trouble feeding my intravenous needle for the anesthesiologist prep ,which is a larger and stiffer needle then the regular IV needle. The 1st attempt she missed my vein entirely.Using the same puncture entry ,re attempted to feed the needle into the same spot of the vein ,poking through the vein completely missing the vein. There was no cut off valve line attached to the needle and it spat out blood all over my forearm ,that is correct ...I wrote this right, the cut off lead wasn't even attached...pulsating blood from the needle ,with no cut off lead, all over the area surrounding the entry point and dripping on my lead needle and all over my elbow draining onto my pillow under my forearm.THIS was to me highly disturbing, not attaching a cut off lead, and unprofessional. Wiping my blood up with my pillow case and wiping my leads off (to which in my opinion shouldn't have happened to begin with),wiping my leads and needle attachments for the cut off valve attachment,.., i was worried of a possible HIV OR AIDS EXPOSURE on my leads being the same pillow case was used to wipe the area of blood off my arm and elbow . ,Its My honest opinion that this handling of my Needle /vein access was very very un sterile. She pushed on the needle a third time to re adjust the needle deeper into my vein,(normal steps),how ever while pushing the needle it went out of the vein and into the muscle behind the Vein.I then urgently requested she try a new spot on my Vein, she stated "They don't like creating new holes."She then attached the saline injector to the cut off line and then attached it to my needle while blood was leaking out the needle. .,wiping AGAIN THE BLOOD OFF WITH MY PILLOW. I Witnessed that there was no blood return when she then pushed on the saline pusher without checking for a return blood in the cut off line, pushing 3 to 7 CC'S,of saline into my muscle,(TO WHICH ISN'T VERY DANGEROUS),but the pain immediately sent a shock up and down my whole arm, when again i Stressed Urgently she try a new spot on my Vein was successful.Again she did not have the cut off valve attached the the needle while correctly in my vein. Again (4 blood leaks in total),blood had drained onto my arm and pillow .She finished cleaning up my blood from my elbow and forearm, and needle access points, and the cutoff valve, with my already soiled pillow case,.i was so nervous and appalled i laughed nervously, and asked "If this is normal?", she stated "It happens a lot with that particular needle because its more difficult to use the cut off valve and the needle at the same time for vein access". Andrew, another nurse came to gernie me to my Endoscopy /biopsy .I did tell him my experience and how i was nervously laughing at the experience on her professionalism for INTRAVENOUS blood every where PROCEDURE.Her attitude towards this experience Professional none the less ,seemed highly excusable ,and created a huge mental distraught in my well being, seeing the blood shoot out of the needle point where the cut line should've been attached.

New update: ok Dr. was super nice too. Thank God. ...

New update: ok Dr. was super nice too. Thank God. Now my issue is this. They don t investigate good enough. Here or at peace health medical group. And the clinic is just all around hands down. Anyway they are quick to prescribe drugs but are rarely figuring out true problems. They still minimize and generalize your health issue and don t give enough time and thought to symptoms. That s scary to me. Food is getting more chemicals drugs are becoming more poten, so that mean health problems are becoming more serious and undetected in my opinion. Nothing should be generalized. A full investigation should take place to figure out the triggers. I ve noticed here in Bellingham these Dr. s seem to have forgotten their role and maybe why they became Dr. s. It s to help people. Temporary fixes causes permanent problems later if left unchecked. Smh Even though everyone was pleasant, I still do not trust my life with peace help. Not just he hospital. All of peace health. It is not quality care.

Update: My apologies aside from the front desk everyone I ve seen so far has been so extremely kind and attentive. This is my first time experiencing this type of care. I usually suffer from anxiety having to be here, and even tho I m still having some small anxiety, the people have been kind. Thank God. I haven t seen the Dr. yet.

I always dread when I have to come here. I m here now. Shortness of breathe and heavy chest. The 2 girls in the front talking about some guy one of them met on POF. I never understand their hiring system. It s like they hire unfriendly, unprofessional, unhappy people. And it s an emergency room for God s sake. It s scary this is only place we have to go to go for care. I hate this place always and forever
