I have a rare medical condition which requires me to need iron treatments EPO injections, blood transfusions. I began going to St Joseph in 2006. On 7/31 the appointment for blood transfusions was set up by my doctors office and I was told not to get my type and screen for the blood until the day of my appointment. I arrived at Short Stay unit and they got my blood sample to the lab. The nurse said during the 4 1/2 hours it took for the lab to match my blood to a compatible blood. During this time I hear it would of been better if you can in the day before. After explaining I was told that they (short stay)didn t want me do labs until the appointment. This was stated to me multiple times. I got the first of the 3 units of blood around 12:30 pm around 2:00 pm I was told a blood test was ordered by a Dr Callahan before my second unit. I refused to agree to the blood test because I didn t know who Dr Callahan is. I said if my doctor ordered it I would. It was shortly after saying no than a women come to my bedside and states you don t meet criteria you aren t going to get blood (I was already receiving 1 unit of blood),
your doctors orders are worthless it s what I want that matters!!!!! At this point my husband asked her who ARE YOU She said her name is Dr Callahan from NW Pathology on contract with PeaceHealth with the blood bank.after this statement she my antibodies screen waxes and wanes (fact antibodies test 7/31 negative; last positive 5/24/14) I will have problems getting blood matches in the future because of all my antibodies. She said she had spent 1 1/2 hours reading my medical records but when I ask if she knew how to treat my rare condition she said no. She manipulated me using scare tactics with no regards to how to treat my condition. She succeeded in get me to agree to a CBC. After the test she allowed me to get a the 2nd unit. Then when part way through the 2nd unit I was asked again to get a blood sample for CBC. I declined. I was told by the nursing staff that if I didn t give a sample Dr Callahan would withhold the 3rd unit of blood and I felt if I gave a sample I wouldn t get the 3rd unit. I have been receiving 3 units of blood transfusions for years. In talking to my nurses I began to understand they were not able to get ahold of my primary doctor (office was closed due to water pipe broke), It wasn t until well into the second unit of blood that I was made aware they might need my Seattle hematologist phone #. Gave this to the nurse and Dr Callahan called my hematologist and she approved the 3rd unit. If my hematologist didn t approve I don t think I would have gotten all 3 units that day. On 7/31 we called hotline to the heart and followed up the next day. I spoke with Shawna last name ? She spent 10 minutes telling me the importance of coming in the day before for type and screen. I stated my husband and I are very upset how we were treated she said she can t go against the doctor and back up the actions Dr Callahan did. I received no apologies. I was not happy at her response especially the bawling out I received about not getting labs the day before. I called risk management to find out it was the same person that I talked to the day before. I spoke with Shawna 3 separate times every times she needed to cut our conversation off because she had a meeting or appointments with another person. This only made me feel my concerns and the experience at PeaceHealth doesn t mean anything to them.
Several of my patients rights were violated on 7/31
Considerate respectful care also the right for me to know about my treatments (which changed once Dr Callahan got involved), nurses didn t inform me of all treating doctors they brought in Dr Callahan. Later I found out from my doctors it was thought that I just wanted blood to get to Hct 38 and found out Dr Callahan lied to my hematologist about my antibodies test and how difficult it would be for me. She was intense. This is the type of doctor PeaceHealth backs?
