I wanted to share my story here because I never thought a hospital would operate like a sketchy business trying to extort money out of me. Here is my story...
On 6/18/2015 I was admitted to Atlanta Medical Center for an allergic reaction. Following my treatment, I sat in a waiting area. During that time, I was approached by someone who asked me to come with him for billing. I followed this person to his computer and handed him my insurance card. I explained the type of health plan that I have and that I was concerned about my high deductible. I also stated that I was concerned about the cost of my hospital visit. This person typed my insurance information into his computer and then I sat back down in the waiting area. A few minutes later, this person came back and stated that he had called and spoken with my insurance company. He stated that he had negotiated a price for my stay in the hospital that day with my insurance company. He stated that if I charged $1500 to my credit card, that this charge would be the only charge I would be responsible for related to my stay and care at the hospital. I was immediately skeptical of this person's statements. Therefore, I asked this person for clarification of the following points: 1. I asked him directly and specifically if he had spoken with my insurance company. He said yes. 2. I asked him directly and specifically if this charge of $1500 was acknowledged and confirmed by my insurance company. He said yes. 3. I asked him directly and specifically if this charge of $1500 would pay for the entire cost of my hospital stay that day, including doctors fees and emergency care. He said yes. At the end of this conversation, I asked again, to be as clear as possible, if this charge of $1500 was the only amount of money I would be responsible for paying related to the hospital and my care there. He said yes. At this point, even though I still had a gut feeling that something was wrong, I went ahead and gave this person my credit card and paid the $1500.
The next day, 6/19/2015, I called my insurance company. They told me they had no record of any phone call from Atlanta Medical Center and that they never "negotiated" any such resolutions in the manner that was described to me. I called Atlanta Medical Center and explained what had been told to me by the person in their office the previous day. They actually got the guy on the phone and he DENIED the statements he had made to me the day before. All of them. The representative from Atlanta Medical Center then told me that the $1500 was not even representative of the services that I had received. Instead, I was now told that the $1500 was basically a random amount of money that they wanted to collect up front. She told me that the actual charges for my visit would not be calculated for several weeks. She stated that at that time, my account would be adjusted depending on what the ACTUAL charges were. She stated that I would be billed more if it cost more or refunded the difference if it cost less.
Several weeks passed. I called repeatedly to find out what the actual charges were. After about 4-6 weeks, I was told that I was over-charged by $834.85 and that this amount would be refunded to me within a week or two. Three weeks went by. I called multiple times in August 2015 and in September 2015 and was continuously told that my refund was being processed. My last conversation was on 9/18/2015. The representative claimed that my refund was being processed that day and that I would see it within a few days. On 9/30/2015 I filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General's Office, and other agencies. Within a few days of filing complaints with multiple government agencies. I am certain that they never intended to refund it and wouldn't have if I had not resorted to filing complaints against them. I was shocked by the repeated pattern of deception from the waiting room to the customer service line. Ultimately this charge was NOT billed through my insurance, meaning that it did not go towards my deductible / out of pocket.
