Waiting months to see Ali Shayan, DMD. My dentist was on Coronado the VA had cencalled my appointment with my dentist on Coronado waiting for an appointment for my teeth. My nightmares are to the point when I sleep I grind through my retainer. I went in for the appointment to find out that they were booked out for months for any dental work and they had me come in to talk about how they were not able to see me or do anything for me.
I ride the train bc of TBI this trip alone is a mission.
For them to make me come to the va for nothing and cut me off because funding is low is just a great example of how the va works.

Just wanted to give the VA a big compliment even though the wait was long but understood the clientel that was ahead of me. When I got in a very nice young lady, nurses aide gave me a warm blanket and ice pack. Surroundings were private and ER doc wasnt sure what was happening with my eye ans passed me onto ophthalmology...very thorough and polite. Overall fantastic service from the ER clinic from the time I walked in to the time I ledt

The best hospital I have had the unfortunate opportunity to utilize. Dr. Prints, one of my doctors, is like doctors of old where they listened to you without rushing you. He helps instead of passing you off to someone else because it may be this or let torthopedics figure out that it or isn't this or that.

I was an inpatient at the VA Hospital in La Jolla from 10-18-23-19 due to my illness. I was treated very well and tended to by all the staff members. From the ER Staff, Escort, Lab Techs, the nurses and the nursing asst. Everyone made me very special. Their kindness, caring hearts. They were very professional and their customer service was above 100 percent. I am not only a 100 percent disabled veteran, I am also a retired UCLA medical asst. Their positive energy helped me recover faster and that made me feel good. Thank you VA Hospital La Jolla !

This location has very long wait times in all departments, it takes weeks to get in to see a primary doctor, and there is no separate urgent care office, only an ER. The primary doctors don't always listen to the concerns of the patients The whole system is a big-run around that is very inefficient.

My most recent issue involved trying to get an app...

My most recent issue involved trying to get an appointment with my primary care provider. I called on Thursday March 1, 2018 to see my primary provider for lower back pain. I was told it would take three business days for a call back to set an appointment. Monday March 5th pain much worse called again and was told the nurse called your daughter on Friday and left a message. First my daughter lives 300 miles away, she is my emergency contact not my primary number and I called her, she has no messages. The call center made an appointment after much frustration for Tuesday, the next available appointment time.

If this sounds familiar to other veterans I should share another experience which I have been waiting over 30 days for a reply. I was scheduled for a colonoscopy in January. I was given a prep called "golightly" and instructed to arrive at early for my 0730 appointment to the GI lab. I arrived at 0700 to the location, the lights were turned off and I sat in my chair for 15 minutes before another veteran arrived. We both needed to use a bathroom, but none were in the vacinity. A worker arrived and instructed us that there is a bathroom, and pointed to a door a few feet away. We both ran to the door to only find that it was locked. We asked the worker if she could unlock and she said that she doesn't have a key. More patients arrived and each asking for a bathroom and the same response. Finally at 0735 the door was openned from the other side and we got up and they showed us the one bathroom that we all waited to use. Given that we are all taking a prep that causes all of us to use a bathroom regularly, wouldn't you think that the clinic where you wait would have a bathroom? I know it appears you only had to wait 35 minutes for a bathroom, try waiting after you were drinking "golightly" from the day before.

Now for a positive, I received at least 10 phone calls reminding me of my appointment. That was a bit excessive, but I certainly knew I had the appointment. After the procedure, not a call to see how I was doing, suggestion maybe you could use that same system to make sure someone shows up for their appointment to check on the patient after the appointment, just a suggestion.

Now some nursing suggestions, the nurses I understand are cold and need to wear a jacket to stay warm, but shouldn't cover up their badge so you can't identify who is providing your care. I had an IV started before the procedure, the first nurse told me my veins rolled as she dug around trying to get into the vein. I pointed out that she went through the vein as you can see all the damage you are doing and would like someone with more experience. The next nurse arrived and I asked her how long she has been working at the VA she said 6 months, which is fine, but did worry me a bit. Especially after she said "they have an IV start kit I am not familiar with" so this may take a bit to figure out. She then poked a few times and I shook my head thinking wow. She eventually got an IV in my arm. Just for the record I am thin, I have protruding veins, and never had been poked more than once in my life.

I can go on and on about my experience, but really what I want to do is assist the VA in providing better care to the veterans. I should point out that I worked for VA healthcare and the private sector healthcare for over 35 years, I hold advanced degrees and could be a good resource to help facilitate change that would better the veterans experience. And I have written a letter to do just that which fell on deaf ear. And lastly my assistance I offered free of charge. Embracing change might be exactly what you need, but taking those first few steps can seem almost impossible.

Some people are on the phone are very short and rude. The operator was an Asian man and he was very rude. After that i got a nice lady and she said her husband was a vet. Those are the people who should work. People who actually care about veterans and not just a job. I am upset with that customer service , but even more upset that combat vets are probably being treated poorly. Fix yourself!

Went to ER this evening and was mistreated as opposed to treated for my injury. Doctor was rude, lied to me, and acted as though my being there was imposing on him. He sent a nurse or aid to discharge me without telling me I was being discharged or going over the discharge order with me. When I had the audacity to ask to speak to him prior to being discharged, he became angry, yelled at me, and was insulting. He was unprofessional and Ill-tempered. Veterans deserve better.

I have received racist comments and improfessional communication with the VA La Jolla, Staffs. The only reason I have to go there because I live in the area and it's convenience. I have my Medical Insurance that I've paid for every month. The staffs need to be trained to behave professionally and do not intimidate the patient as if they all are poor and worthless. If I am a Department head of the VA Hospital in La Jolla, I will get off my chair and start the investigation of the low moral behavior of the staffs. If they hate their jobs, fire them. There are many more kind and caring people that can maintain the professionalism and do not take their jobs for granted.

This large medical center supplies exempliary care for our proud veterans. Continuously researching tomorrow's illnesses in conjunction with the University of California, San Diego. Situated upon a hill in beautiful La Jolla, California. Being a nurse for 25 years, believe me when I say that the entire staff is so very caring and compassionate! Another example of your tax dollars hard at work, used proudly and wisely.

Excellent facility, and I had the privilege of rotating here on my third year while obtaining my Doctorate in Audiology.

The Audiology department is well-staffed and well-equipped with cutting-edge technology. I think it's great that VA patients get top-of-the-line hearing aids (if eligible for care) at no cost. Great place!

These guys try very very hard to help our veterans in need. I only wish the federal government would dedicate the same taxpayer resources to helping our veterans that they gleefully give away to illegal aliens and refugees

This country helps out refugees, illegals, homeless vets (when a lot of them out there are druggies) and other countries who have more rights to the constitution then I do. Billions of dollars are being spent on the illegals that Muslim President. I'm a disabled vet struggling to keep off the streets drug free and I get nothing. Stand Down isn't necessary in other countries

I'm in the emergency room RIGHT NOW. I've been waiting here since 0400 and it is currently 0731. At around 0545, I asked the front desk what the hold up was. The gentleman replied they were "clearing out the beds". There is a young man in the ER that is in excruciating pain and not ONE nurse checked on him until I went to find the patient advocate. These people are not the caring people I thought they were. At least tell people what's going on. Terrible and not the true definition of what I thought the VA is supposed to stand for. There is no way this was rated one of the best VAs in the country with this careless behavior.

Torn bicep tendon and shoulder injury a week before Christmas. Primary care got me into the ortho deptartment very quickly. Once scheduled in ortho time and care stoped. Now 7 months later and six $50 dollar office visits plus travel costs and lost wages and still NO help. Seen an Ortho Dr. Once for a few minutes only to tell me that "we do better if we don't treat that type of injury". During the many office visits, the attending assistant would repeat "Oh, I wouldn't do it" refering to having the injury treated. I thought Dr.s were dedicated to healing. I didn't believe all the negative stories about the VA care before, but now I am one.

Military Personnel are Blessed with VA Medical and Dental privileges. For me personally I have not had any major problems, except for the Emergency room, taking so long to be seen. But You have to realize that they get slot of Patients ALL day. Each patient has different health issues and each one is unique and takes different amount of time to take care of each person. You just have to be patient and understand this.

I have nothing but good things to say about the VA Medical Center in La Jolla! My mother is the vet and she has received stellar care. Dr. Laura Miller and Dr. Jorge Porras are two shining stars.

Went in cause I had extremely painful stomach pain with pressure and shortness of breath. I just wanted to make sure I was okay but they told me the wait time was four hours regardless... what kind of emergency room puts a wait time of four hours on people who may be having a life or death situation!

I can t get my healthcare here no more after what I went through as a former VA employee, wait time scandal people going thru my medical records for there personal gain, bad behavior which was common in the hospital, but finally no more medical criminal activity for me.

My primary care team are some of the most unhelpful people I have met since clearing the Army's CIF. Dr. Baxi gives the impression that she does not want to be bothered. It's impossible to actually set up an appointment for any new symptoms without going to the emergency room. Great facility, horrible staff.

---edit---
I will say, I don't know if it was coincidence but, not 15 minutes after writing this a Nurse finally called me back after three days of trying to make an appointment. Now I just have to wait a week for primary to get back to me about the referral :)

Omg if you value your life and health go ANYWHERE ...

Omg if you value your life and health go ANYWHERE except here. The staff refuse to listen to patients. They never communicate with each other to better your care. Dont expect them to do any procedures on you that might solve anything until days after arrival. Dont expect any sleep. You will only get sleep if you pass away there. They tell you to fall asleep but then 5 minutes later a random nurse wakes you up and takes vitals that were taken within the past hour because they didnt look at the charts. Even if you are in intense agony it it a very slow process of getting Any relief. It's like they care more about what they think you are going through rather than how you actually feel. Go to Kaiser or anywhere else if the VA will cover.

Yes this is institutional medicine but it is educational medical training institution associated with the University California San Diego one of the best medical training facilities in the United States it is conjunction with these two facilities you will find you will not get better Medical Care anywhere else in the country money will not buy you better Medical Care than what you will get here at this facility

The VA tries to do a great job to help out veterans, but they really can't. There just isn't enough staff. The people on the phone are often rude, dismissive and disrespectful. Some of the doctors of the staff are also rude. I can imagine it is difficult.

There are other doctors and nurses, therapist, etc, who are very kind and caring. There are lots of programs (especially in the mental heath area) to help veterans out. So, I can't be too critical.

Also, as a veteran with a disability rating, I don't have to pay anything, so, any kind of service is excellent for me!

I've been going to this VA Hospital for years. It has been a life saver to have the VA hospital here in San Diego. Its the only VA hospital in southern California. I have always been treated well and respected by the staff. I have gone here for many different appointments from blood work to the emergency room for care. I've had great experiences here. Thank you VA San Diego!

Got here about 8:30pm, got my vital taken about 11:30pm and it's 1:02 am and we still waiting in the Emergency room. Everyone is very friendly, however I'm still here. My dad is a 92 year old diabetic with a spine trouble and heart issues.

Waited an hour an a half to get my vitals checked at the EMERGENCY ROOM!! And another hour just to get treated. They need more doctors and nurses. Should be called "Waste your day room" instead!

La Jolla and Minneapolis are the 2 best VA hospitals in the whole system. I have been in numerous VA facilities and the care here is great. They are dedicated people who care and put up with a lot. I have had to wait a year for an appointment just to see my primacy care doctor.

I pray we will continue to have a VA facility to go to by the time congress gets done. Congress can give corporations a large tax cut but they can't fund the VA.

This place is simply amazing. Doctor Pyo basically saved my life. Riverside VA prosthetics were just EVIL people who refused to approve my prosthetic legs for almost a year. Thank god for the La Jolla VA and Doc Pyo. They took me in and approved my much needed prosthetics. They got me back into a great life. Riverside va with their cheap penny pinchers was seriously depressing. Thank God for this place.
Not just Doc Pyo- Mr. Rick Crabtree in the wheelchair room is an amazing human and hard worker who is always there with a smile doing everything he can to help.
The medical here has been amazing as well. The Specialists s are great and I love being treated by great people at the front. Overall- this is the VA at its finest.
Good job!

Worst VA I have ever dealt with! You would think the care would be better in such a large military community. I have been waiting over 2 years for them to fix a botched cervical spine surgery, all the while it has become increasingly worse. The pain management is a complete joke. They keep trying to put me on meds that I have had major bad reactions to, and actually cost me a marriage due to said medications. It's actually quite sad, I am done with the VA. You have failed, horribly. I just hope your mistakes do not cost any other veterans their lives.

Transferred to this VA system from another when I moved, very poor staff. No one wanted to help me at all. Plus there was an older vet in a wheelchair left in the hot sun with no water or shade, he said they left him out there. So sad

San Diego VA La Jolla, Ca. Needed care while here on visit. Free Velet parking . Enrolled in ER, Fast tracked, in and out with meds. (2hrs) Great staff, efficient, caring ER nurse and doctor. Definitely an encounter we all want to experience I am a Vet enrolled in another VA out of state. This is how it should work.

A large number of the staff seems to be there for a paycheck and not much else for the clinics I've dealt with. The ortho clinic is backed up to the point that an appointment is a joke. All an appointment is for is when you show up. They will see you when they get to you. I left without seeing a provider at my last appointment because I was 45 minutes past my appointment time and they still didn't have any solid idea as to when I would be seen.

I work at a local Assisted Living/Memory Care community, and we recently moved in a resident who was a patient at the VA La Jolla into our Memory Care. I wanted to share the absolutely wonderful experience that we had working with Larissa Tekerian MSW. I have been in senior living for over 16 years, and Larissa has been the most communicative, helpful, kind, and caring Social Worker that I have had the pleasure of working with in a very long time. Larissa responded to every request for paperwork and updates, and got everything done in the most timely and pleasant manner imaginable. The VA is lucky to have her and her team serving our honorable veterans'. Larissa puts other healthcare groups like Kaiser to shame! Helping a senior move into an assisted living community can be a miserable experience when dealing with the doctors and social workers- to get required paperwork completed, it can wreak havoc on families that are already stressed and worried about their loved one's well-being. Larissa made everything so easy so that we were able to focus on the veteran and his family to ensure the transition went smoothly for them. Thank you for your superb service Larissa and VA La Jolla from Atria Rancho Penasquitos!

Good place to be hospitalized. I went there for all my healthcare needs. Loved the staff and doctors there. All seem to know what they are doing too. Example: i went to see my PhD for PTSD as usual when she looked at me funny and said " you are blue". I said " well Im not fall on the floor happy but not blue". She said" no your lips are blue, im gonna see if you can be seen!" Within an hour I was getting a catscan on my chest and they admitted me with clots in my lungs! See, quick! They are also great at reminding you about appointments and prescriptions!

VA Hospital La Jolla is where my Healthcare provider sets me up with health care Doctor's appt's. I was seen by a Dermatologist 05Jul so now I am logged into their computer system and can be seen by them again for my Healthcare need.
Also on Thursday's @2000 I attend Torrey Pines AA mtgs. here in the VA Hospital La Jolla and have been doing so for 10yrs. On Thursday, 25Jul19 I will be celebrating my 10yr Anniversary where my Sponsor & good Friend will present me with a 10yr token & Cake for 10yrs consecutive sobriety.

I had a visit to the Emergency room yesterday and the care I got was super efficient. After checking in, I only waited 10 minutes before getting my vital signs taken. I was sent for Xrays right away and then seen by a doctor within an hour after xrays were done. Since I was being seen for my knees, ankles and hips, I was not needlessly given or stuck with an IV or hooked up to an EKG. A pharmacist came with my medication and explained the side effects to me before I was discharged. The entire length of stay was less than 4 hours. That is the speediest ER visit I have ever had!

While at the hospital near end of 2011, I was thre...

While at the hospital near end of 2011, I was threatened and abused by doctors, other medical personnel and others. These threats included firearms which were held in a threatening manner while they stared at me within their illegal and unlawful court. Other threats were verbalized such as beatings etc outside of this unlawful and illegal court. I was and am unarmed, and I was and am well behaved. This was recorded on film with audio.
Note: Courts are supposed to be free of arms. I was never asked if I needed lawyer counsel or representation, and they illegally and unlawfully waived my right to a jury. I was also coerced by the doctor and intern, supposingly helping me, to lie, but I did not.
These doctors were conspiring againt me with two FBI employees and others who are suspected of murdering with their felon informant, alias Alvarez, to have me kidnapped, stalked, murdered etc.
An article of Alvarez murdering his wife and daughter etc. He may still be a fugitive of a double murder, and was and may still be a felon informant. He was also harbored as a fugitive by the FBI, and has ties to organized crime. He has also impersonated peace officers.
This plot against me and others also includes my brother, his female accomplice, my father who has been dishonorably discharged from the U.S. military twice(Dishonorable discharge from the Marine Corps due to court martial for mostly violence, and a Dishonorable discharge due to desertion from the Army for which he was convicted and imprisoned for over one year) etc.
Both my father, Joseph Sebastian Pereira, and brother, Joseph Anthony Pereira have ties to organized crime, and both are using the AKA Jose Pereira(This alias appears on some of the criminal reporting websites). All of these people have been convicted of felony crimes. My father's discharge has obviously been altered with white-out to fraudulently obtain decades worth of VA benefits.
I am the only United States of America veteran in my family.
I have also been stalked, etc. by felons from the San Diego police department and others who made serious threats of violence and worse against me.
These people should all be arrested for numerous felony crimes against the people of the United States of America, and their prints thoroughly checked by unconditional citizens of the USA. They should be thought of as extremely dangerous, and as impersonators because of their felony convictions and the power they have. They may also be using other aliases to commit felony crimes.
Elements of the FBI, NSA, Postal Inspection Service, etc. have been committing crimes such as murder, robbery, gang conspiring to commit prostitution of minors, drug trafficking, sale, torture etc. These gang conspiracies have been plotted at the local, State, Federal, Private Business Level etc.
These elements have also been committing telecommunication crimes, internet crimes, etc. by altering etc. my comments, etc. and accounts. And to gang conspire.
These elements have felon plants, at the local, State, Federal and private level. All are considered impersonators due to their felon convictions. All are extremely dangerous the people of USA.
This happened during one of the times I had almost no money and no income. I was homeless with no place to live, because of the etc. conspiracy etc. crimes committed against me including conspiracy to commit robbery, consipacy to commit murder etc.
San Diego police impersonators because of their felon backgrounds, stalked, aggravated assaulted, etc. conspired with other felons who were burglarizing, extorting etc. Albertsons with felon employees and other felons.
I also smelled drugs such as methamphetamines, crack and alcohol, etc. on their breath.
Further, these elements and individuals, etc. attempted and continue to conspire against me by illegally inserting an a address of 280 8th Ave on my credit report in an attempt to falsely implicate me in crimes they committed while in and communication with each other in and to New York city, Manhattan. I have never lived at this address, and this address is not mine.

Took 9 hours!!! in the emergency room, went in at 1pm left at 10pm. There were multiple people who waited the same or more to be seen. Avoid coming here if you have the option to go somewhere else

As far as VA's go and I have been to many, the San Diego VA is far and above one of the best. I thought Palo Alto was a well serviced VA. The SD V.A. is a great facility. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because the pharmacy is a joke. I wont bore anyone with details but that department needs a change from top to bottom.

Wonderful facility, friendly staff, and a place of refuge and respite for the weary Veteran. My experiences in the VA system as a whole has always been positive and the VAMC in La Jolla is a prime example. Of the many appointments I have had there, I was seen within a reasonable time and accommodating to my schedule. They give numerous reminders via text, emails, and letters so that you know exactly when to be where. Even though the facility is going through renovations, it is a pleasant atmosphere to be in: friendly and helpful greeters/volunteers at the information desk as soon as you walk in, piano playing in the main 1st floor hallway, volunteers saying hi and offering assistance, public computers to go online and print documents you need, tax free shoppette and a cafe for a meal, not to mention the numerous buses that are providing transportation to and from the facility. The physicians and nurses take the time to listen and offer care or advice on problems you may have, service connected or not. It is a good feeling to know that I am able to receive proper medical and mental/emotional care after serving my time for our country.

My dad was in the palliative care unit for about 2 weeks and I cannot say enough great things about the staff. They were all very caring and attentive to both my dad during his final time here on the this earth as well as to us as family members.

The reason I gave this a four star because my wife is working here and she is doing a great job. Well, overall would be good. Service is a little bit OK. Staff are nice but depending on the department.

Emergency care was very prompt on both my visits and their staff from being admitted through emergency, ICU, DOR, and every department in between, provided professional personal care as if you were a family member. So many names I'd like to extend my gratitude to as they all equally deserve recognition for their passion towards humanity, health and wellness. One person I'd like to surely commend would be Jim in the DOU department. His knowledge sharing and taking the extra time to explain and breakdown my situation really helped me make a life changing decision for the better. Thank you everyone at the LA Jolla VA Medical Center

They have a lot of rennovations and constructions going on, hopefully to make more parking available. Getting there before 10am to find a spot is as late as I would get there...anything around noon or after you will be waiting cued up behind dozens of cars.

The hospitals services are satisfactory, it's about a 50/50 chance of being there on a day where they are not too busy. Always respectful and helpful staff though, that's always appreciated.

Came to get my new VA IF card and closed on weekends. As a former VA and current DOD healthcare employee were we serve our military/veterans on weekends this shocked me! Where are your I CARE values and commitment to our Veterans?! Shame on you SES Leadership for not having the courage to be open on weekends and honor our veterans! That s right you have no honor because it s not in your value system!

Have been going here for years, nearly every experience is extremely frustrating. Trying to get ahold of someone to help is nearly impossible. It has taken months to get simple things done. Doctors do not keep track of your cases. Then they leave and you get a new one. Could be ran better by children.

VA service has always been quick, efficient, and thorough in my experience. Pharmacy usually has a long line so I have my scripts mailed. Seeing a specialist has taken me a month to get in typically. Parking blows at the hospital but they're fixing that. After having private insurance, I see little difference. Happy with the VA in SD.

So far as long as I've been to this VA hospital; I have had only one positive visit...and that was over two years ago. Seems like the hospital keeps on making renovations to improve the curb appearance, but where they really need to be making those changes is on their staff....maybe then veterans can begin to receive better quality in care in a timely manner.

In August 2016 I went to the Va for help for a sinus infection. Dr. and emergency Dr. did nothing. Now I have to have surgery as my sinuses are packed and I am in constant pain. My surgery wont happen till February 27 2007.
Worst yet, I lost sight in my right eye yesterday. I called the Dr. and she said, "that's weird, if it happens again go to emergency. My dog gets better care at the vet. I vote minus 5 stars.
