have used Pet First for 14 years. I had two little dogs, both rescues and one had issues from the beginning. PF covered everything as stated without any issues and we used his limit several years in a row. The last three years, we did a $10,000 limit. Taz passed last year but had we not had PF, we couldn't have kept him healthy and happy for 12 years. He was my little man. Thank you PF.

My second do, Mia, is now going on 15 and I upped her limit to $10,000 a year ago because she had emergency gall bladder surgery a year ago January and the cost was almost $8000! I had a $5000 limit on her then so we ended up paying almost $3000. She had always been my healthy one and I never thought about her having issues like this. That $3000 out of pocket cost would have more than paid for the insurance cost for 17 more months of insurance AND PF would have paid 90% of medical costs! That year cost us well over $6,000 out of pocket. So, I upped her insurance to $10,000 limit. Good thing, because she now has liver issues and they have been great.

Pet First has been awesome. The limits, deductibles and ease of reimbursements has been great. And they are easy to reach and talk to.
14 years is a testament to how good they are.

This is a scam. I called for free 30 day policy for new pet we adopted. I was told that a credit card was required to start the FREE policy, but that I would not be charged unless I called back to activate the policy. I let the 30 days pass, and didn't think anything about it. My husband then notices a charge to our joint account for $20.95 for pet insurance. I was furious. The kicker, I never received any email confirming the policy, only promotion material asking me if I would LIKE to extend the coverage that was set to expire. This is shady business practice at best. After 30 minutes on live chat with a representative, I was told to email someone (to an email address that didn't work btw) to cancel a policy I never authorized. I am definitely reporting this company to our local adoption agency so that no other family has to go through this. I now have to get a new CC just to make sure I am not charged again. The lesson: nothing is ever truly FREE. Thanks a lot PetFirst.

Wonderful customer service, many options when choosing your plan. Overall great company just missing that 5th star due to lack of technology as in you have to print out your claim form rather than filling one out online, although they automatically deduct payments from your checking account when receiving your claim they snail mail a paper check, and they don't have an app.

I really did not expect to have my claim paid almost entirely in full, and so quickly, but it was! PetFirst did not require any additional documentation or explanation past what I initially supplied (full doctor's notes) and I had my check in about a week.

My dog thought he was Kobe Bryant and tore his Acl requiring surgery. I am very thankful I have PetFirst they approved his claim fast! Surgery costs were around 3,000 and PetFirst paid 80 percent. I purchased pet insurance for rattlesnake encounters because we are avid hikers. Currently I have 5000 of insurance on my dog and it is peace of mind! Insure your pets! Life happens and PetFirst has great customer service, provides peace of mind and reimbursement is easy - Kim and Higgins

I have been blown away by the exceptional service provided by PetFirst. The customer service is truly outstanding, and I feel like this company truly cares about providing my pet and me with the highest level of service. I wish all companies were like this one. I would recommend them to anyone. A lot of the financial worry and stress that comes from caring for a pet has been alleviated because of them. Can't say enough positive things!

Filed my 1st claim, was denied. So this company is definitely a scam. We'll collect your money, but if you should ever need them to do anything.. they'll just deny your claim.

Definite SCAM. Stay away from this company. Lot of better ones to choose from.

Also, I used to work for a reputation company.. Lot of these reviews look fake & paid for.

The worst insurance company I ve ever had to deal with and it s not close. They were never completely clear on policy, was told one thing by one person and then something different by another. All they do is rope you around enough to keep you paying each month. Biggest scam going. Your better off saving 35 bucks a month and avoiding this joke of a company. Disgusting display of customer service but what else can you do when you have a joke of a company.

DONT USE THEM.

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY! I would like to give them ...

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY! I would like to give them zero stars, but that is not an option. We called ahead of time for a surgical claim for our dog and got approval for the surgery and partial coverage. After the surgery, we submitted the claim and it was denied. We looked into the problem further, and were told the surgery took place outside of his claim year; I.e he started limping in May, went to the vet in June and had surgery in January. His policy began in December and for that reason, he was in a new claim year. What?! What would have happened if he started limping December 14th and his new claim year started December 15th?? Moreover, while attempting to escalate the claim, I was in contact with numerous representatives and I was told SEVERAL times by MULTIPLE different people that they would be following up with me either via phone or email. I had to be the one to follow up each time- their customer service is a complete disgrace. Catch this one too- Upon reaching the top of the command chain, I was told the only thing that could be done is re-filling the claim and having it being sent to a review board. I inquired as to who would be on the review board, and the person on the phone said it was himself! What kind of impartial review was I going to receive with a representative who had already reviewed my claim? We're trying to spread the news about this company and to run in the other direction if given the advice to go here. We were advised by our local humane society and have contacted them regarding this issue in hopes that they reconsider which insurance company they recommend to their customers. The company boasts having some of the best insurance coverage, while they were going to offer us $500 for a surgery that retails around $3500. Absolute insanity and a waste of your money.

I was going to say I don t know what I d do withou...

I was going to say I don t know what I d do without PetFirst but that s not true; I do know. Without them I would never have any kind of peace of mind!
Before getting PetFirst the trauma of any incident was compounded by trying to figure out how to pay the vet. We have an AMAZING vet, but no one can maintain a practice by treating patients for free. After losing our 17 year okd Akita, a rescue who d gone through 4 surgeries to repair damage done after he d been dumped we decided our next dogs would have medical insurance. They all did after that... even the old Pekingese.
Our first Mastiff suffered from OCD as well as severe lumbosacral disease and PetFirst was there from beginning to end. We would have found a way to pay for that, but to be honest, I m not sure how. Not having to worry about where we were going to find the money to cover the medical expenses meant we could focus on her, we could explore options. It didn t make losing her any easier, but it made our short two and a half years with her so much better. (Gosh, I m crying now...)

PetFirst has been with us for 5 dogs now. (Currently two.) They understand our companions are family and the treat them that way.

When we adopted our little "Sammy" from the shelter, there was an advertisement for Pet First Insurance included with his paperwork. We had never had anything like this for any of our pets but because "Sammy" was a shelter animal and 7 years old, we decided to look into it.
We contacted them, liked what we found out and decided to get their insurance....to make a long story short, within 6 months, Sammy got very sick and when we got him to the vet he didn't know what was wrong and didn't know if they could save him.. he was lethargic, unable to stand and it scared us to death. The vet took him, tried several things over the 5 days he was there and whatever it was, the medicine and care he was given was enough to save his life. The bill was over $1,000.00 and when I submitted it to Pet First with the vet's paperwork, we received almost all of the money back that we had spent, less the low deductible...in a very short time, without any hassle what-so-ever. We highly recommend this company as without them, we would have had a very hard time absorbing the costs of Sammy's treatment that saved his life.
Today we still have our Sammy and also Pet First Insurance. We would not be without the both of them!! Thank you Pet First.
Sincerely,
Nancy & Mike Warner

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK FOR ANYTHING, NOT EVEN THROUGH THE 30 DAY SERVIES WHEN YOU GET AN ANMIAL FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER, THEY'RE FAX NEVER WORKS, THEY HANG UP ON CHATS, AND NO ONE CAN HELP YOU. I SUBMITTED A CLAIM SEVERAL TIMES SINCE AUGUST AND THEY JUST DENIED IT BUT I HAD TO SEND IT IN 7 TIMES TO 3 DIFFERENT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLUS IT IS SOMETHING THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO COVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHEN YOU CALL TO TALK TO SOMEONE NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN WHY THEY DON'T COVER IT ONLY THAT FOR SOME REASON IT'S NOT COVERED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS IN THE CONTRACT. I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH NOT TO USE THIS COMPANY AND PAY EXTRA TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. IT IS TRULY HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND NO CONSISTENCY IN CARE OR THE CONTRACT YOU SIGN.

Do not use this insurance company. The claim process is ridiculous. You must submit 12 months of vet records (which is clearly unusual based on my vet's response to the request).

As an MD myself, I am extremely concerned with the knowledge base of their staff. It is clear that they have no concept of disease states or pathophysiology and are passing judgement on claims based on inferences rather than facts.

Furthermore, I am concerned about the business ethics of the company. To write a review on their company page, you must give several identifying facts about yourself, and your review is not posted until it is "reviewed by staff." This raises serious red flags as their website rating is nearly 5 stars, but their Facebook rating is around 2.

I would not recommend this company at all, and I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Petfirst adheres to the terms and conditions of their policy. They offer a 100 percent reimbursement and an annual deductible. Their cost is very favorable in comparison to the 2 other companies my dogs are insured with. They have very short wait periods for accident and illness but be aware they do have a one year waiting period for orthopedic conditions.
They need to offer a fully online experience including ach deposits of payments and closer to real time claims status online to earn 5 stars but I would certainly recommend them without reservation.
Sincerely,
Molly

As bad as my expierence has been and looking at some of the other reviews I have to wonder if they 5 star people work for pet first or they are bot accounts because clearly they are a scam.
Horrible, unbelievably bad. had a cat for 3 days that came with free 30day insurance. took the cat in for the URI that I was assured was covered by the insurance and was the whole reason to activate it. They repeatedly tried to let my claim expire by sending me an email that says if i don't respond in a few days they would consider the matter closed. I sent them every scrap of paper possible and eventually after they couldn't find anything else to request they said
"pre-existing conditions aren't covered". which is funny for a 4 month old cat we had for 3 days to have a pre-existing condition that I would somehow be responsible for. 200 bucks i've had to fight for 3 months for 200 bucks. it's really down to just the principal of it now. I won't recover my time investment having to chase this down even if they pay out. also writing them off to the BBB because not enough people report businesses that engage in these behaviors. they basically offered a phantom product to obtain my personal information to resell it as well as use it for their own advertisements. I remember when that used to be illegal.

I have used Pet First Insurance for almost 2 years. I have 5 dogs insured. The cost is much less than I expected. You even get your own personal agent to help you any time. Filing is easy and reimbursement takes about 2-3 week's. I am so glad I finally took out insurance on my dogs. With so many I could not afford all the vet bills without it. Just be sure you understand what it does and does not pay for. Also the max it will pay for any one illness or accident. Just get all the information. I gave them 4 stars as a few times there were was some confusion and I felt I wasn't given all the information so I made a bad choice based on the information I was given. But over all I have been very pleased and will continue to use them.

We received a free 30 day coverage when we got our cat from the local shelter. It definitely came in handy! Two weeks into owning our new cat he had some vomiting in the middle of the night and saw the ER vet. Through a simple process we received $ for our claim very quickly. It made me a believer and we signed up for coverage for the entire year.

I signed up after I adopted my puppy. It was really easy to sign up. I must have been misinformed, or misunderstood when signing up, but I was charged after the free trial .

When I went to call customer service the representative was extremely stand-offish. When I inquired about the confusion, she kept repeating that they don t ask for card numbers for the free trial. When I asked about how that could have happened the representative told me that they record all of the phone conversations and they can have a manager review because all phone conversations are recorded for situations like this . I don t mind if there was a misunderstanding when I signed up but I just felt like I was brushed off or like I was being accused of having an angle. I was charged almost $100, both transactions were not the same so I had question, but I was received with the same answers and energy. I was just reviewing my statements since I have been deployed and noticed the charges.

I am glad I canceled. Especially with the customer service. I will be discouraging people to use this service even for the free trial.

We cancelled our PetFirst Pet insurance, but they still charged us for two months in a row after we cancelled. When we called them to deal with it (on multiple occasions), they promised a full refund, but when I checked the credit card statement, only a prorated portion of one of the month's was refunded. Whether that was incompetence or dishonesty, I don't know, but either way, it does not reflect well on them.

We got a month free with them and we were going to continue paying for it for our new kitty we got at the shelter. We had 2 appointments that we paid a lot for. We submitted two claims. They made us jump through a bunch of hoops just to deny every single thing. They found ways to deem it as routine or as something our kitten had before we got insurance (which wasn t true). I d stay away and look else where.

It ought to be called "Pet Worst". This was my first claim and it was very revealing and disturbing. They said our illness was the same one from Two years before! Impossible! The new one was a new one all together and was nothing like the first. I had a complete exam done four months before and my pet passed every part, lab work and all. After paying for months of this fraudulent insurance, I cancelled immediately.

When we purchased pet insurance through PetFirst, we never thought we would need it. It was just peace of mind. Unfortunately, our sweet dog Bella was diagnosed in March with lymphoma. We can't tell you how comforting it was to know we did not have to make a decision to go ahead or not with treatment just because of finances. She is getting excellent care and PetFirst is paying claims in a very timely manner. I am so thankful for PetFirst. I am encouraging all our friends to consider getting coverage for their pets.

I've had PetFirst Insurance for about a year now and it's been a real life-saver. It has the best coverage of any pet insurance plan I've heard of. We had an $800 emergency vet bill for my 2-year old lab mix (we thought she had an obstruction) and they reimbursed about $700 of it. The vet thought surgery might have been needed for a little while and I was really happy to have the insurance because PetFirst would've covered the majority of it. Their claim turnaround is pretty fast, I was able to get the reimbursement within a couple weeks and claims are really easy to file. Having PetFirst allows me to focus on my dog and her needs in an emergency without having to worry about the costs of treating her.

Not even waist your time an money on this insurance. We had a trial for 30 day my pet had an emergency problem they never pay me. They found the most stupid excuses to not pay. Even tho my vet did a letter for them explaining all the issues with my dog. They charged me after my trial , they waited until my free trial was over to tell me my claim was gonna take longer , then after that ,they charged me my first premium , and they came out with a denial saying that i could apply for an appeal. My baby vet did the narrative exactly as they asked explaining the issue with my dog ,i filed the appeal guess what they charged me my second premium because again they took a moth to give me a result and the appeal was denied as well. So just dont get this insurance they will find the way to not pay and keep charging you the premium . Now i cancelled my policy i hope everyone who read this dont get this ins and be safe of this fraud! They dont even deserve 1 star for lying to ppl.

I love this company! My English Bulldog Oliver had 2 mast cell tumors removed this past year (2 different claims), and PetFirst reimbursed me for the majority of these bills! They are life saviors. For anyone even considering buying pet insurance it is definitely worth it! Especially for the peace of mind (veterinary bills can get extremely expensive fast). When I was in the 24 hour veterinary specialty clinic I met a man who s 1 year old blood hound got hit by a car earlier in the week (his dog had 2 broken hips). His children were devastated. This poor man told me he didn t have pet insurance either. I felt bad for him.

I adopted two kittens from the shelter I work with...

I adopted two kittens from the shelter I work with. The shelter has a partnership with PetFirst and provides 30-day insurance certificates on all new adoptions, which include coverage with zero waiting periods (this was confirmed and was used as a huge selling point by the salesperson who sold me my policy!) I took advantage of the offer and purchased a permanent plan from them.

My kitten, Rocket, began limping. It got worse as as the day turned into the night, so I took her to the emergency vet, reassured by the fact I had insurance. The vet determined it was likely a reaction to Rocket s FVRCP vaccine, which was administered in the same limb, just a few days prior. (Rocket s brother, George, also began limping a little, on the same leg, a few days after his vaccine. Rocket wouldn t bear any weight on her arm, but George would, so I did not feel like there was an emergency).

I submitted a claim for this incident, and it was later denied due to 6 month orthopedic waiting period.

1) The salesperson, and the flyer they pay the shelter to hand out, said there were zero waiting periods.
2) Upon reading my policy and consulting with an attorney friend, I discovered that it reads:
Waiting Period means the time period where policy Coverage is restricted. For this policy, the time period is one (1) day for Injuries and fourteen (14) days for Illnesses, except for orthopedic conditions for dogs, where the Waiting Period is six (6) months.
3) This wasn t orthopedic - actually an adverse reaction to a vaccine - but I m surprised they wouldn t have just assumed it was an accident and classified it as such (kittens are rambunctious). If George hadn t also started limping, I would have assumed she had jumped off her cat tree wrong, or wrestled too hard with her brother.

Note that the waiting period is for ORTHOPEDIC CONDITIONS FOR DOGS. DOGS.** I have a cat. Nowhere does the policy indicate that cats have an orthopedic waiting period.

I had high hopes for this company. I ve heard horror stories about pet insurance plans denying everything. I didn t think I d have these issues, being that I was insuring two creatures who are new to the earth and had health certificates from the shelter. I was wrong - this company doesn t want to pay claims, even if it means denying a cat s claim under an exclusion that is specific to dogs.

Buyer beware. I will not be recommending this company to anyone, and I will be reaching out to the shelter to encourage them to discontinue their partnership with PetFirst.

I found the PetFirst website to be easy to use after a little
practice and their help desk is also easy to access.
A little patience with their turnaround times after filing a claim
is indicated but worthwhile. I found very little quibbling over

information (invoice, medical notes, test results, etc).

I had 2 dogs on PetFirst insurance starting in 2017. Total premiums started at $1150/year for both dogs ($535 for Dog 1 and $615 for Dog 2). This year, I just received notification that premiums for JUST Dog 2 will be close to $1600/year. This is a 100% increase in premium price from last year to this year (last year the premium went up 40%). They cited my dogs age (turning 9 this year) and my location (California) as reasons for my spike. I just compared with other insurance companies and the same coverage (same annual max, same annual deductible and same reimbursement %) at Embrace was $700. This is a no-brainer decision to leave PetFirst. I'm appalled that they would do this. This company will get you sucked in with the first policy and gouge you with astronomical price increases every subsequent year.

I received a 30 day trial when I adopted my dog and in order to receive the trial I had to sign up. I figuerd i would cancel the polocy after the 30 day trial and let me tell you I am soooo happy i didn't. After 3 months my dog had a tumor under his lip! I would recomended getting insurance with this company specially if you have an older dog.

I normally shy away from companies that don't allow me to change information online and that require me to call them. I got PetFirst for one month free with the adoption of my new kitten. To set it up, I had to call. My coverage ends soon so I had to call today to renew it - I couldn't do this online. However, each time I have called and spoke to someone (today it was Kyle), it has been painless and very easy. The people I've spoken to have been able to answer my questions well and in ways that are very easy to understand. Also, the pricing is great compared to other insurance companies I've looked into. Plus, I'm a CVT so I got a discount. :)

I would give them a 0 if possible. When I adopted ...

I would give them a 0 if possible. When I adopted two older kittens from a shelter, the shelter recommended pet insurance since they had no way of knowing about the health of animals in their facility. The insurance would "protect me" should the cats have medical problems. So I called the company they recommended - PetFirst. At no time did anyone from PetFirst say anything about pre-existing conditions or worming being excluded. I was told only that the insurance did not include wellness care which I felt was very appropriate. It didn't take long before I realized that I had adopted both cats with a pre-existing problem. One tested positive for roundworms so both were treated. Even after treatment, both had loose stools with some bright red blood in the litter box. In other ways, the cats were healthy. I didn't try to submit a claim until 8 months later when the problem was persisting and I had already incurred several hundred dollars in vet bills. The cats were given worming medicine again as a precaution even though their previous culture was negative. PetFirst denied all payment on the claim, insisting that it was a pre-existing illness, was routine care (nail cutting was included on the same bill), and that worming was not included. They must have all these rules in their fine print but they certainly don't tell you when they sign you up. And they knew these cats were adopted from a shelter which made them high risk. I recommend that you avoid this company as they are highly unethical - to me, it amounts to fraud since they do not disclose very important terms and conditions and are signing you up over the phone even before you can see and review their policy. When you really need the insurance, they find a reason to deny your claim and this is probably after you have paid their premiums for quite some time (as I did).

All I really need to say here is, Thank God for PetFirst!
Saved my dog and my wallet.
If I had to complain, it'd only be about the time it took for the claim to be approved and then receive money back, altogether about 5-6 weeks. But it really doesn't matter, still totally worth it, great coverage!!!

You will never find a better pet insurance company...

You will never find a better pet insurance company! We had Trupanion and walked away. Now we tell everybody about PetFirst. Their service and coverage cannot be beat. They offer discount suggestions, like the multiple pet family. And when you call with questions, the first thing then ask is "how is ----" they care first.
