When we signed up we were led to believe that the only thing we needed to do to submit a claim was to provide the detailed receipt for medical visit we paid for out of pocket. When I tried to submit a claim, they would not accept the claim unless I provided ALL the medical records from every visit to ANY vet the dog had seen for the past year. This included multiple locations because some are urgent cares and some are regular vet visits. Then when I asked to cancel I received an email confirming the cancellation first. Then I recieved a second email saying that it wouldn't be cancelled until I filled out a cancellation form and sent it in with the specific policy number I wanted to cancel. They change your policy number every year, so this is no doubt intended to deter or prevent your cancellation. The entire process is shady.

BEWARE - this is what happens when you try to cancel. BTW, check out the last 15 or so Google reviews and see how many times they have had this error happen just in the last 24 hours. Lots of mistakes to be making if everyone trying to cancel gets confirmation emails of new policies. Class action lawsuit anyone???

Petfirst, don't bother with your canned error response that you have thrown out to the other 10 or so similar reviews. It is not genuine and doesn't mitigate the damage. Do not use this business.

DO NOT USE THEM - they charge you premiums and cancel your LIFETIME policy when your pet is a senior. They took $40 a month for over 7 years and I had one claim and they sent me a letter saying they were not renewing. So $2,400 in premiums and their lifetime policy, they sold saying how great it would be to have a senior dog covered, is cancelled when the dog becomes a senior. And he is healthy too! Deplorable, unethical treatment. Just bank your money and have it when you need it - you'll never get a return on this product when you need it. Taking advantage of people that want to be responsible and care for their pets is reprehensible.

I have been hassling with PetsFirst pet insurance since August. It should be called PocketFirst. They refuse to acknowledge the "timeline facts" and cover what happened to our dog's eye and they refuse to repay the funds owed to me. It was a complimentary policy coming with the purchase of our puppy. You had to sign up within 2 days which I did... So of course they don't want to acknowledge the facts. They are rip off merchants! Beware! It's all about wearing people down. The corporations own everything.. and the people get ripped off. Not Impressed with the tons of time I wasted with these people and the appeal process getting me Nowhere... All I have left is to warn others. I'm done with them! They probably won't post this review...

I've had my rescue dog for a year now. Poor little guy has had chronic diarrhea starting just a couple of weeks from when we adopted him. Luckily, we got a free trial of PetFirst insurance that we now gladly pay for. They have been great in paying without questions or hassles for all of the tests and treatment. Easier than most human health insurance.

I adopted an older dog. Bought coverage as advertised, and was told there was NO exclusion/waiting period. Claim submitted and denied due to "pre-existing" condition as mentioned in doctor's notes. Well no sh** there was a "pre-existing" condition... it was an ADOPTED/RESCUED older dog. Their advertising and what I was told amount to insurance fraud. I want the (expensive) premiums back. My other 17 dogs are insured with nationwide and I've never had this issue with adopted dogs with them.

I've never had pet insurance before I adopted a puppy pit bull mix. He gets in a lot of trouble like pits tend to and the PetFirst Insurance has paid for itself many times over. It's a great company to deal with--they've very responsive to questions, very helpful, fast, and easy to contact. I'm so glad I decided to get insurance through them.

Rates are reasonable, coverage for major accidents and injuries is good. We unfortunately had to use it for one of our pups when she had a hospital visit due to a GI infection. We filed the claim and it was processed quickly! Tip: make sure to submit all pet information the first time (including pet s 12 month vet history) to make things go smoothly.

Great company to work with. They are truly there to help you in any way that they can. I have a Tibetan mastiff puppy who has had some major issues as he has grown up and I m not sure what I would have done without petfirst! Their claims process is quick and easy! Receiving a check is usually within days of your claim being approved. You can upload every document right through their website, or email any forms directly to them. I don t have time for the back and forth nonsense which you would typically expect from any type of insurance company...but that is truly not the case here. Thank you!

not a good experience. They did not want cover anything i sent them, i am paying $50/month for absolutely nothing. i called in today to complain and al they could do was cancel my plan. okay.. but what about everything else you stole from me???

nearly $500 plus i had to pay for every emergency and illness my dog went through.

I have been with this company for about 12 yrs. I have never had an issue with filing a claim. Always easy to do and very quick. I would recommend them to anyone looking for pet insurance. They are willing to work with you if you have an issue with anything.

Would not suggest pet insurance through this company. Customer service is poor and they will not email you back. When I was looking in to adding a pet to my policy, they responded very well. When I went to inquire about cancelling the policy I already had through them, they treated me poorly. Will never go back and would not suggest anyone to go them. I never filed a claim so I don't know how they treat people when a claim is actually filed.

i did not know that when i had my cat piwackit chipped that you receive a medical coverage for 1000 dollars if your dog or cat is lost and you get him back injured. it is free for the first year and then you can purchase other insurance or buy insurance now. i spoke to George and he helped me to register my cat. he made it very easy. thank you very much! We adopted a dog from a local shelter and received a 30 day policy from PetFirst. A couple of days after we got him we noticed he was limping. I immediately took him to my local vet and then called PetFirst to asked if we could use the policy for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon as suggested by my vet. They were very nice and confirmed that it was covered by the 30 day policy. They also convinced me to buy a new policy for when the 30 days passed, assuring that the coverage would get carried over to the new policy. We took him and the bill was over $600 for xrays. I sent all the documentation with the claim and IT GOT DENIED! When I asked for explanation they said that I needed to wait 6 months for orthopedic claims, even though the policy only lasts for 30 days. This means orthopedic claims would never be covered on this policy and they lied about it to sell me a new policy. I am very disappointed with their work ethic. This is ultimately hurting the animal since we cannot proceed with his treatment and he is in pain. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!

Update after 2 weeks: no one has contacted me to talk about this as they stated on the response below.

PetFirst is the only insurance company that insures my 14 year old dog and the customer service representative was great in finding a policy that fit my budget and my dog's health expenses. They process claims quickly and it's easy to upload documents. Id recommend PetFirst to anyone who wants to care for thier dog responsibly.

To be honest this company is not on your side at all. They will find any reason to deny your claim and leave you wondering what you did wrong. I had a hard time getting in touch with them after filing a claim. Customer service and live chat told me my claim was processing when really i found out from logging into my account that they were lying. In actuality, It was not processing at all because in my account was a note that said that they had not received the adoption records or the medical records. I had indeed sent the adoption records and the emergency pet clinic assured me that they had sent over the medical records as well. My kitten had an upper respiratory infection and was prescribed an antibiotic, an antiviral and nose drops for congestion. My claim was filed on January 3rd 2020 and was denied January 10th 2020 for having a pre-existing condition. The kitten have a clean bill of health from the Humane Society because of the records and they never let sick animals be adopted out. I would never adopt an animal that was sick! Petfirst is really a disappointment when it comes to pet insurance and certainly don't make things easy for the insured party.

When we adopted our little girl Sunny from the SPCA they were kind enough to give us an immediate free trial of this pet insurance. We called up first thing Monday morning and activated. (They do have limited weekend hours available too). The operator who helped us sign up was extremely friendly and informative. I was comforted knowing our new little family member was covered almost immediately should anything arise. That same week we took Sunny into the emergency vet because we thought she was having some breathing problems. $500 dollars later they sent us home with some Benadryl and a clean bill of health. I submitted my claim to PetsFirst within that same week. The process was easily outlined of what was required and had an easy upload option for the docs they required. The site stated the process could take up to 10 business days and I got a reply on day 7! To add to my excitement they were able to reimburse me almost all that I'd paid at the emergency vet. I will be sticking with PetFirst as my go to for my pet insurance needs. They really came through for us. A+ experience!

At first PetFirst pet insurance was a BLESSING for my German Shepherd Dog that had bad GI issues and other issues. If I wasn't the type of person to keep track of my money, I would been HUNDREDS of dollars in debt. At first, they were very responsive and on it. Now, I am waiting 5+ months for my money back. I call almost weekly, and each person tries to help me, however nothing goes through. After speaking to MANY people, it is evident that the people who answer the phones are just the middle man, and it is the people over at claims that are making huge errors. I had a bill over $400 that was DENIED because it was after 90 days... they had kept denying my claims for NO REASON, saying they need more notes. After continuing to send the notes myself, and asking the vet to CC me on their copies as well, I still have received nothing. They try to deny my claims after 90 days, however are failing to do their job correctly and timely. Today I just spoke with a female on the phone, Samantha. Samantha and Gabby have both been the 2 point of contacts that have gone out of their way to help me and fix this issue. Samantha was able to fix it within SECONDS, and was very understanding and personable. Samantha looked through all my emails, was able to locate the dates, and confirm that I was, in fact, supposed to get reimbursed from all these dates. After months of calling, Samantha was the person to finally make me feel relieved and helping me with this process. THANK YOU SAMANTHA. I would have left this insurance company if it wasn't for her. THANK YOU SO MUCH, SAMANTHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our dog, Jet, ate something she shouldn't have and ended up with a serious gastro-intestinal upset. She was listless, vomiting, and had diarrhea and was only getting worse as the day went on. We took her to the emergency vet since it was Easter Sunday. Jet stayed at the Vet for the next 24 plus hours getting antibiotics and intravenous hydration. The bill, as you can imagine, was over $1500. I submitted the claim to Pet First -- they reimbursed us at 90% less $100 deductible within two weeks. No hassle. No worries. Thanks Pet First!

Holly Berry is my 7 year old pit bull mix. She recently and very unexpectedly she lacerated her front, left leg on broken glass. It was to the bone and through several tendons controlling her toes. She had to have an expensive tendon repair surgery by a specialist, followed by 2 months of checkups and casts. It was a tough 2 months for both of us, but the one thing I never worried about was whether or not I would get reimbursed for her expenses.

Her medical care ended up costing around $5,500, and PetFirst cut me a check for over $4,300 of that. Needless to say I would not have been able to handle this financially on my own. But knowing I had PetFirst insurance for her I could confidently give her everything she needed to repair and heal so that she could be her happy, adventurous self again.

I've never posted a negative review of a business before in my life, but there's a first time for everything. PetFirst's poor handling of my claim, appeal, and lack of communication the entire way through has incensed me enough to post on as many sites as possible in hopes other pet owners can avoid this money pit.

PetFirst, like many other insurance companies will actively look for ways to deny your claim and withhold paying out. They should change their name to "moneyfirst" to be a more accurate representation of their interests. I had recently adopted a kitten from a shelter and she'd been spayed the day we took her home. As expected of a kitten after surgery she was lethargic and inappetent the day of but showed some improvement the following day. Things took a turn for the worse and after about two days post surgery she had developed a horrible infection from the spay and was on death's doorstep. We took her to the vet to receive care and after a round of antibiotics and opioids for the pain as well as several days of syringe feeding her and fluid IV's she began to improve. We filed a claim with PetFirst only to have it quickly denied as her condition was ruled "pre-existing" due to an error on behalf of the vet's office when inputting her intake paperwork. We went to appeal the claim, even going so far as to get a written and signed letter from the vet stating that her conditions developed days after the surgery and stating how the mistake on the paperwork was on their part only to have customer service yank us around for a month and a half finally to deny our appeal. PetFirst is a garbage company and thankfully we didn't spend any money on their policies having only used the free month offered at adoption through the shelter. Save your time and money and find a competitor who actually cares about you and your pet, not this one.

PetFirst Pet Insurance is amazing! I've had my dogs covered with them for several years and I'm so glad I do. PetFirst has the best customer service, anytime I call with a question about my policys people are always so nice and helpful. I just submitted a claim
for one of my dogs and the claim has already been processed, accepted and now our reimbursement check is on it's way. The people at PetFirst really care, and choosing them for my dogs pet insurance is the best thing I've ever done, and my dogs will continue to be covered with them. I highly recommend them! Great company, great people and GREAT service!! 5 stars all the way. Thank you PetFirst!

A representative called me and spent more than thirty minutes going over the best options for our old pup. The slightly more expensive plan will benefit us more with out of pocket expenses. Appreciated having PetFirst very much. My precious boy passed away on 2/14. If I ever take in another dog, I will definitely get coverage thru PetFirsr.

Excellent Insurance! Extremely helpful and caring Customer Service! I have carried insurance on my Pets for Several Years, hoping I don t need it. I really have been Pleased with this Company. They really came through recently when my Dog had an Ear Cancer. They helped pay for almost 5,000. Dollars in Surgery and Medication. I did not have to stress about how I was going to pay for his Treatment.
They have Customer Service Individuals you become familiar with and that is also reassuring. I am extremely Satsified with how this Company handled all of my questions.

They do not give the correct information. I called about the 30 day trial and ended up paying because the trial wouldn't pay for anything that could happen in the first 30days. The person I spoke to on the phone informed me that part of vaccines, fecal exams, and visits would be covered.
When I received the contract, everything the woman told me that they DID cover, was not covered.
I would end up paying more for the plan than I would get back.

I have had both my dogs covered under PetFirst Pet Insurance for the last six years and I can say I am absolutely thrilled with this company! Over the six years, I filed various small claims and never ran into a problem with payment. Recently, however, my little girl tore a ligament in her knee which necessitated surgery. The cost would have been impossible for me had I not had PetFirst. They paid the claim exactly according to contract and extremely quickly; within few weeks! All I can say is "THANK YOU PETFIRST for everything!!!!

Cody is a rescue dog so his past history is unknown to us.We had a suspicion that he might have had an injury before he came to live with us though.One evening in July, Cody started choking on his food. There was a strong thunderstorm outside so he went and hid under a table, his safe spot. The storm passed and I wanted to take him for a walk. That s when I realized all four of Cody s legs would work.i immediately took him to the emergency vet. Cody had an MRI and it was determined he had ruptured a disk in his neck. He had emergency surgery and was in the hospital 5 days. Needless to say his surgery, care and treat was very expensive -almost $7000. Without Pet First Pet Insurance, Cody might well have ended up a can of ashes on a shelf. I couldn t afford the cost of Cody s surgery and care without this pet insurance, Cody is back, better than before!

The young lady that answered the phone told me to go ahead and email it to her and she would take it over to the claims department. Excellent customer service. I got my check last week. Very pleased with PetFirst, their coverage and their filing application.

Have had pets for the last 15 years and decided just last year to purchase a health insurance plan for my 2 dogs.
I wasn't sure how this was going to work out and not sure if it was worth it.

Well, found out it was totally worth it after my 7 year old greyhound was diagnosed with hemolitic anemia. We had lost another dog to this dreaded disease over 5 years ago and I was devastated. This time, we did catch it early and were able to treat it aggressively. Thank goodness, she survived and is back to her happy self.
I gathered up all my bills and lab work and sent in my first claim to PetFirst pet insurance. Just received our reimbursement check in the mail yesterday. They paid a good portion of a very large bill and it made doing the right thing for our beloved pet that much easier. Plus it was an easy process too. No hassles at all. I will continue with the plans for both my dogs as long as they are with us! Highly recommend this insurance to any pet parent looking for peace of mind.

No pressure at all. I decided to go ahead and activate a family plan for my two new pets because the monthly premium was so reasonable and based on my past experiences as a pet owner I know I'll use the coverage!

Got a free month with my pet adoption, figured I would try it out and see how well it did. I got my answer and it was horrible. The kitten we got ended up having a respiratory infection and after submitting all the paper work for the first visit it was denied. Then when she didn't get better after the first round of antibiotics, she needed to go back. Once again I submitted all the information and it was again denied. All the while, they are calling and emailing to see if I want to extend my coverage.

When my 16 year old rescue Chihuahua began coughing, I didn't hesitate to get the first available vet appointment, even though it was after hours. Because of other symptoms I had noticed, I was concerned that he had a growth in his throat. We took x-rays, and it was determined that his trachea was beautiful! He was sent home on an antacid and has been much better since starting that. I am so relieved to not have to be concerned with vet bills when something may be wrong with my little Henry. He gets the best treatment always. Thanks Pet First for paying his claim in such a timely manner. No headaches, no waiting.

I have had this insurance for six years and paid $22 a month. That is nearly $1600 out of my pocket.
Never made a claim until now and it has been an absolute nightmare. Out of a $600 vet visit Petfirst decides they can reimburse $40.
My dog needs a $2500 surgery that is not covered. Canceling this garbage ASAP.

If you own a pet. Save your money. Even the good plan is worthless. I could have made hundreds of dollars in the time I wasted filing a claim to receive back $40.

I have had this insurance for 8 years and have never had to file a claim until now. The customer service was great. However I don't think the insurance is worth having if you have a healthy pet. After 8 years of paying premiums, time spent faxing documents and making phone calls, I received a $0.40 check.

After researching multiple pet accident and illness carriers I decided on PetFirst by MetLife for a number of reasons:
1. They are owned by MetLife which is a very reputable company.
2. Their rates were very competitive.
3. There was plenty of flexibility in configuring the policy to fit my needs. 4. Their plans covers accident and illness (not just accident as many do). The enrollment process was very easy online. When I had additional questions I was connected to a representative who was friendly, professional and able to quickly answer all my question. Overall, a fantastic experience.

I've just received 5 emails from your company, stating that I bought an insurance policy from you, when in fact, I cancelled it back in April. I can't even call you, because all I get is a busy signal and then I get hung up on! Please look into this.

Helpful, Informative, and Friendly! Contacted them for our newly adopted dog's 30 days of insurance. She was so friendly and a wealth of knowledge. We will be looking into getting insurance for the whole herd! LOL

Never had pet insurance and am very happy that I did get petfirst. They are a great company. I can call them and get the questions I need answered and they always pay the claims. My pet is adopted. I'm glad that I made the decision to sign up with them.

We recently had to submit a claim for our dog and had no issues with approval and processing to receive reimbursement check. It did take a little time and there was a bit of delay in communication but overall very happy with our experience! It went nice and smooth/we didn't have any hiccups. We have had this pet insurance policy for 6 years, thank goodness never needed it.
Until recently our cat was diagnosed with eye cancer. Everyone I dealt with at petfirst was helpful, compassionate and responsive.
They paid our claim quickly and fairly.
Im very happy I had this insurance plan.

I acquired a kitten who, I later found out, had a hole in his heart. I was told every day I had him was a blessing, as his condition was not curable. He received excellent care at the animal hospital. My insurance paid for the care. Each claim was handled quickly and never questioned. Great company!

PetFirst is the worst company in the world. I recommend no one to do business with this company. They will rip you off and they re so incompetent. I had two Veterinarians and a Ophthalmologist call and they even said they don t know what their talking about. I recommend no one should do business with these people. I had to call the Better Business Bureau on them because they didn t give me the right amount of money back. This company is a totally RIPOFF!!

Our puppy penny that we rescued about two months ago started having seizures and we took her to emergency pet hospital after blood work was done they found nothing wrong with her and she was put on anti seizure meds the bill was over $400 dollars i sent the bill to petfirst pet insurance and they approved it nine days later no questions asked other insurance companies should be as good.I give them a 5 star rating.
