The 3 stars I am giving are for the Surgical staff...
The 3 stars I am giving are for the Surgical staff, and to a few select nurses. I had Bariatric surgery here in October 2016 and had a wonderful experience all around. For me the only hiccup was on the day I was discharged when we had one particularly stupid nurse who insisted on having my Primary Care doctor's father (yes, her father, not the doctor herself) sign off on my release. In any case I went home happy and recovered well.
Right now as I type this I'm in a hospital room with my husband, who had his Bariatric surgery 2 days ago. It is currently snowing heavily, so I planned on spending the whole weekend with my husband without driving home in between. Again, the surgical staff was amazing. As for the rest, I don't know how things could have possibly gotten so bad in less than 2 months. First of all, being a Bariatric patient I am on a restricted diet, and the St. Alexius cafeteria has nothing for me to eat other than hard boiled eggs. Every time I have had something other than that, I have vomited. For some reason a hospital cafeteria has a gigantic pizza display and a wide selection of deep fried foods.
I am also on restriction to not lift more than 30 lbs. This became a huge problem since room assignments are not given until the patient is out of recovery. We were told to leave our bags in the car until then. This meant that after sitting in the waiting room for 6 hours, when I got his room assignment I had to hike out to the parking garage, strap all 40 lbs of luggage to me, and walk through the hospital to his room. No one is available to help you. I survived, but how do others handle this?
When I arrived at my husband's room, we discovered there was no bed in the room. They kept him on a gurney out in the hallway for 20 minutes until they could track a bed down. Our night nurse was one that I had during my stay, and she was great. Our day nurse, however, has been condescending and difficult to deal with. There are also the patient care techs, who this time around have been very poor. One of them refuses to get up from his computer. Another burst into the room while I was in the bathroom vomiting from the wonderful cafeteria food. I was still standing over the toilet and he poked his head in and said "Do you know how many ounces he drank? I need to record it." Seriously?
Finally there is the cleanliness of the room we are in. The bathroom of this room reeks of urine. We keep requesting that housekeeping come in to clean, and each time they just take the trash and mop the floor, but the smell is still there. It's so bad that we can't even go near the restroom. I had to put a toothbrush and some wet wipes in my purse and find a restroom on the first floor to clean myself up. It's disgusting!
Lastly is patient care. My husband has pushed the Call button a couple times and not gotten a response until I got up, opened the door and made eye contact with someone. They are also not progressing with his plan, as he's still hooked up to a pain medicine pump he had not used for hours. They were supposed to transition him to oral medication hours ago. I really hope something here improves, because I literally feel like I'm in a third world country.
