Hotel Derek Destination Hotels & Resorts Review

I dont know where to start.. first of all I booked my room threw a third party app.. which I had no problems with before but I guess due to my lack of sleep I didn't pay close enough attention that my app had glitched and booked the wrong room. Which normally wouldn't have been a big deal but then when I spoke with Yvonne I believe her name was. the night manager apparently. And tried to explain that there had been a mistake and that I booked a king size bed. Then she began kinda arguing stating that there had been no king beds available since yesterday. But like I explained to her that it's not her fault but maybe I can have the third party fix it. She was explaining that I was basically stuck and they would not help me try to right whatever wrong was made. I almost felt a little attitude but me being as tired as I was just wanted to get to sleep. So I let it go. Elevator was broken to the self parking garage. And so I paid 25 which I later found out I could have valet parked for the same price due to the inconvenience. And then when leaving the golf cart was out of gas so I had to walk up the stairs with all my stuff... double beds felt worn out. Pillows were flat and probably seen better days. So I was tired and passed out but woke up several times from the uncomfortable bed... the only thing that was pleasant was the front desk employee in the morning staff which were better trained in guest services and actually made me feel like she cared about the things going on in my stay. She apologized unlike the night manager and I wish I could remember her name it was something with a n. So basically this will be my first and last stay at the Hotel Derrick.

Kitchy and overwrought. The whole experience tries way too goddamned hard. The constant music playing everywhere is annoying and the disco lights in the lobby are nearly siezure inducing.

Awesome place, cool atmosphere, GREAT food and service.

Nice for the price point and location. Right next to Galleria. There was a gentleman asking for money in lobby thats why I give it a 3 star.

We were so unhappy with our experience here. We chose to stay at this hotel because we were attending a gala at the Post Oak which runs closer to $500/night. We paid for a sky suite at Hotel Derek instead because we thought it would be a better deal and it was also represented as a 5-star hotel. The experience started off bad from the moment I drove up to valet. I waited at least 5 mins (got out of my car, got my bags out and waited for someone to take my keys) before anyone noticed me. A service they charge GUESTS $36/night. Unfortunately we met at the hotel after work and drove two cars so we got the honor of paying over $70 to have our cars parked for under 24 hours. In an effort to keep this somewhat short, I ll just list the next unimpressive qualities:
- The bar (on a Friday night) only stayed open until 11.
- The rooms, lobby, halls were terribly outdated and had visible signs of poor craftsmanship - think sloppy/peeling paint jobs, rusty vents, dirty tile grouts etc.
- the bathroom was so tiny and had the worst lighting. Not to mention the barn-style sliding door was so poorly installed it took both of us to open and close it.
- We woke up to a $449 charge on his credit card that later disappeared. (We were told at length that there would be a $100 hold on the card for incidentals ).
- no vending machine on our floor.
- mesh shades let in so much light.

Average hotel that tries to remind you there's more money to be spent there at every turn

Its a place of relaxing n calmness come by n chk out the hotel its gravy n exciting.

I had to book a very early flight to get to Houston on the day I needed to be here I had previously booked a room at Hotel Derek. I arrived around noon. I was told the rooms were not ready and I would have to wait until four to check in. I asked them to make an accommodation because of my early flight. They replied broken record that the rooms were not ready and that they did not know when they would be ready. Hotels are in the business of accommodations. Having rigid rules and not even trying to make an accommodation is saying to the public: our corporate rules are more important than your needs. I will not return to this property.

Fun and funky vibe. Staff is friendly and helpful. Beds are comfortable and rooms are well equipped.

Location was alright, rooms looked nice but had some flaws, but nothing terrible

Horrible experience. Room still had trash under the bed from what I m guessing the last ppl left. Got there and they put a 100 dollars hold on my card PER NIGHT, so if anyone is looking to book at this hotel keep that in mind. After I checked out my card was again charged an extra 45 dollars and when I went to figure out why no one could tell me. The lady in accounting finally called me back and assured my money would be returned but still didn t give a valid reason for it being taken out to begin with. All in all I would never book here again.

The hotel was great and the staff was awesome especially a new supervise that's working there he was very polite and helpful

Dated decor and rooms, unfriendly and unhelpful staff, very disappointing stay.

I booked my stay with hotel tonight & my experince got frustrating pretty quick.

The good:

- The room was decent & nicely decorated. The bed was relatively comfortable.

- the location is great, but not situated in the best area. You are close to 610 and galleria mall. So if you are in houston for shopping or meetings you have access to both highway and mall. I would recommend closer to inner loop if you're in houston to have fun.

- The cleaning staff are nice to you.

The bad:

- I'm not a big fan of the overall feeling of the hotel, everything seems a bit fake & trying to show off. It's like they tried to give you an illusion of a luxury experience without it actually being luxury. From how the hotel is built to how you are treated.

- The way staff are managed is terrible. You can tell there is no effort for a profesional or friendly culture. They just hire people and let them to work there with no training. I will explain more.

- The Valet service was rude. They were rude to me when I came to check in. They were rude to my mentor when he came to drop me at night & made a whole scene because he wanted to get off and walk with me to the lobby as we were still talking. It was late at night. There were many ways for them to ask him for his keys other than being rude.

- I called the front desk more than 10 times in the morning to ask for an iron since I had a meeting and needed to iron my shirt, they only picked up once (the second time I called), told me they'll send an iron, didn't answer my calls after. An hour later I packed my stuff and checked out early to go to a friend's house.

- when I talked to the front desk, the manager told me to call hotel tonight and so they can offer a refund. After I contacted hotel tonight about it, they called the hotel and the manager denied it saying there was no record of my complain. This wasn't about the money I paid to stay there, this was about their lack of decipline and following principals.

- if you chose to self park, it's something like 25-30 dollars and you have to walk a bit to the hotel from the garage.

Let's say there are better hotels I've stayed in that area & I will not be staying at this hotel again. Neither I would recommend it. They cause too much unecessary headache.

Room is clean and comfortable. Hallways need to be done kind of creepy and old. I would return for another stay

Great location and pet friendly, rooms are spacious and staff is friendly but the shower is ridiculous low pressure.

We booked this hotel thinking of it coming out to be something amazing.. but we where dead wrong.
First of all, you have to pay for parking 25$ a night.
When you first walk in, there s an old smell kinda of like a mix of gas or rotten eggs. The staff was friendly except the guy in the morning. I was trying to take ask him a question before checking out. Instead he just signaled me to just drop off my keys with some attitude in his voice. The walls of the room are super thin. We could hear people s alarms going off next door all morning. The rooms look very outdated. Your bed comes with out a comforter. Instead you are given 3 thin sheets. I booked this hotel, because it was said to be upscale and rated #2 in houston hotels BUT ITS ALL A LIE. Save your money guys and go else where!

Very modern looking building. Nice lounge, pool, and bar area. The service was okay at best. The rooms were small as were the beds. The pictures we saw online were misleading. Having to pay separately for parking is an inconvenience.

Been here several times and they have never disappointed! Great location, friendly staff and a great hang out location.

Booked 3+nights at tge Derek. The shower was broken. Low water pressure and no hot water. Called front desk and they sent maintenance to fix it. Same issue happened in the morning. Woke up to standing water in the bathroom. Called again. They said they were sending maintenance again. Hotel manger offered no accomadations for the inconvenience. Asked for a different room and was told they needed to "see what's available". Horrible customer service for what Was my favorite boutique hotel! So much for a relaxing weekend at the Derek

They had a gas leak down stairs. The snack bar was over priced the parking was horrible to figure out how to pay

By far one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a hotel. For starters, overnight self parking is already $30 a night and on top of that, after booking, it is failed to mention that another $15 plus tax service charges are applied per day of your stay for "amenities" that no one uses. Several wall outlets were had broken faceplates and electrical wires were visible, the toilet still had poop stains and to top it off.... the walls are so thin, the screaming kids next door literally sounded like they were in the same room with you. Save your money, book at La Quinta.

Room is big and beautiful staff is super nice they have a complimentary house car that will drive you within a 3 mile radius wanna know what's in the 3 mile radius the friggen galleria mall tons of restaurants this amazing chocolate shop called cacao and cardimun the car is there quickly I haven't had to wait at all they even have a like step to get into the car if it's to tall the bed is super comfortable I slept great the elevator kinda makes some creepy noises when it goes up and down but it's all posh looking with nice lights and music just kinda creeky the hotels is modernism meets western so I love the sleek look and that it's still all Texas

The room was cramped. The bed was hard. You had to step down out of the shower. It was not at all a good experience.

Great interior walking in looked modern, nice room with great air conditioning. Loved the cow robe. Just beware that you will have to pay for self parking $24 or valet. Also a $12 service hotel fee to your added bill which they will slip under the door in the morning. Reasonable price on Exoedia so I was impressed. Maybe they should I charge less for parking, other than that excellent. Did not try restaraunt

Extremely overpriced everything. Parking in the hotel 27Dollar for 24h.
It was only 10h or 24h, which we found to be wrong.
We also did not like the location at all. The hotel itself very modern, large room.

Nice hotel. I stayed here for my wedding night. Room was clean and the staff was very friendly.
When I got home and checked my statement, I noticed I had an $18.40 charge. I called the hotel to ask about it and apparently they charged me for candy and popcorn!? I didn t touch anything in that room that wasn t mine. They told me to get rid of the charge, I have to dispute it with my bank and they will go through their accounting department. Now I gotta hope And pray that I get that charge off of my card. I sure would hate to pay for some candy that I didn t eat. This isn t cool. Not staying in here after that. Very inconvenient.

Not bad to pay Holiday Inn prices for a boutique hotel but you def see the gaps in an actual boutique hotel experience like Kimpton or others. Plastic utensils when requested, ice machine broken on multiple floors. Ordered a movie and it cut out 2mins in. Called the front desk and they said they ll send an engineer . Hour goes by and no one shows. Call back and rings for 30 seconds then the call drops (on the hotel phone). The final straw was when no hotel staff would respond to calls of a domestic disturbance that was turning violent in the room next door. Don t know if anyone got hurt, after 30 minutes of yelling and banging it all just stopped. We packed our stuff said goodby to the tiny water feature they call a pool and vowed never to come back

Nice boutique hotel. Clean but my room was a little cold even though I turned up the heat.

Contemporary hotel, spacious guest rooms, pet friendly

There is no absolutely no way of getting to the front desk from inside the room to ask for anything. After waiting 30 min on a loop the person that answered stated they couldn t extend the room on the phone.

I really love staying here when I m in Houston. The best thing this hotel has Is shuttle services!! I love the Shuttle lady Lee she is very sweet she always makes me feel safe and welcome . The location It s very convenient close to a major mall and alot of nice restaurants! I will continue to stay here.

Hey guys, mixed reviews hip :) yes,customers service great !clean ,parking self parking on high floor and elevator broke. Had to use machine to get ticket . Did not know it did not give change so lost $18.00. BTW you can avoid machine and Text your information in . I was a first timer and did not know information was on the wall of the garage.Splash pool super cute pool heated movie on the wall was great. But movie ran to long so the security guy took it upon himself to cut the movie off before the ending and left me hanging . Great business center. King size bed but hard mattesd and no Comfy comforter . Great mini bar and snacks reasonable priced menu. Oh BTW $$$ 100. Hold on your card for incase you spend money . So like a said it is a toss up Good and Needs Improvement for what they advertise it to be.

Limited foods selections at the bar. Good food though. Room was nice. Decor contemporary.

It's posh, not pretentious.I was welcomed in paint spattered jeans and a ratty tee. Drinks are strong and mixed well.

The location is great. I dont think its worth the $$$ you shell out for the room. The room was clean but slightly outdated for the price. I do think the $100 pet fee is great IF you stay here at least 3 nights. The only place for your pet to do their business is a small fake patch of grass on the side of the building. The staff was very nice. The elevator to the car garage was broken so they started providing a God cart to your cart since non valet has to park in sections 6-10. What a drag! They charge you extra for self parking or valet which just surpasses the amount of $$$ you'd want to spend on this hotel. I wouldnt stay again. Personally it was not worth it.

Nice place but like most businesses staffed by a bunch of 20 somethings.

Very upset with this hotel. I stayed there this weekend for 1 night and was barely in my room due to going to an event. I checked out and was informed that I would only be charged 14.99 for their service fee. I check my credit card today and not only am I charged the service fee but also 34.00 for mini bar items that were so called taken! No where on my check out did it state I would have been charged for those items and when I called to get it resolved I was informed that he was not able to do anything about the charges.I will never stay at this hotel again, sad to be in the Galleria area and give such poor service!

I had a pleasant experience at Hotel Derek. Convenience is a must here. The hotel is located directly off the highway, which was good for me. I must admit the showers did back up as some other posters mentioned..but it was never too big an issue for me. I had a spacious king room and an amazingly comfy bed. If you need a nice hotel and the convenience to get back on the road, Hotel Derek is perfect.

It's a really nice hotel that's close to everything that a woman loves. Lol Shopping, eating and beautiful scenery. I would definitely come back and stay again. I love that is 100% smoke free. Please stay that way Hotel Derek!!!!

I've to 2.9 stars hotel the next day & it was better than "Hotel Derek's" facade for fancy looks just secretly up charge for amenities(parking etc...) That should already be included... Honestly felt like a waste of Money & Time...

A beautiful hotel in a great location. We stayed here on a staycation and I certainly enjoyed it. As to be expected, parking is expensive but they make it easy. We had quite a few maintenance issues that were resolved pretty quickly. The customer service left nothing to be desired.

I absolutely loved my stay. Bed is comfy and the view was amazing. The young lady at the desk was full of information. Thank you for that. I just checked out only for the front desk gentleman was rude not friendly. I was trying to ask questions but he seemed to busy. " Just drop the keys and go. Basically! What if I wanted to stay again. You will never know now

Was the worst experience ever.. the bathroom had hair all in the sink and the wall. The patio door was cracked, the floor was damp and wet in places. The tub was dirty, and the vents had so much dust in lint , that it was staining the ceiling. I will be requesting a refund from this property and my credit card company

called twice to reserve a room and both times was hung up on, pretty sure service tells alot about a place alone

The rooms are modern & spacious & the bed is comfortable. The front desk staff is very kind and helpful. However... My room was on the 7th floor and it was very loud, I could hear sirens all night and morning traffic. I had the door latched closed and the maid tried to open it about every 10 minutes for almost an hour, but wouldn t knock or say anything which was rather strange. I finally opened the door to peep my head out to decline service, at that time she looked directly passed me into my room as if to examine it which was also strange. The shower didn t drain well, and was up to my ankles in seconds. The towels are very bad, almost like they are a synthetic material and have melted in the dryer. They charge a resort fee, which they should include upfront but don t. Parking isn t all that convenient and rather expensive as well. Has the potential of a great resort but fails in the details.

The worst service i have ever experienced in a hotel. I have traveled to so many countries and stayed in so many luxury hotels and resorts. But this so far was the worst in every case. Check in time took 4 hours !!!

They have an excellent party halls. Attended a wedding recently and the setup was awesome.

Hello , the cheking in was quick and grate witht the asian lady sorry for forgitinv the name , we were all set , the room was amazing !, what rocked my stay was SAM the shuttle driver , very safe and aware , educated and a great custumer services. Very promped guy , i was with him trough the whole ride he is getting calls from the hotel and he still manage to to please everyone needs , stayed the whole week and had the best experience ever thanks to all the sttaf uncluding MY FAVORITE shuttle driver Thank you again !!! I will definitely be back !!!!!!

In great need of a complete renovation. Having to be placed in 3 different rooms due to unsanitary conditions, the experience here was nothing short of atrocious. The staff did adequately attempt to make the proper concessions to rectify the situation, however in my eyes there was nothing that could have been done to fix this traumatic experience. As you can see by the pictures the stains on the visible portions of the bed were quite noticeable. These stains were apparent in all 4 rooms. Some people might have been fine with this untidyness, I wasnt. I expected more from one of the supposed best hotels in the area.

Not my favorite. Overpriced. Far better hotels in the area.

For the price, the front desk clerk could have been nice

The kitchen was great food was extremely good service was nahhhh ok, I hated that there was no parking for people actually staying at the hotel but other than that it was ok slightly overpriced
