Took in a perfectly healthy car on 6/28--needed a simple purge valve replaced, per the service writer. He also suggested I need a "fuel system cleaning", which I went along with. A day later I have to have it TOWED in because it was severely over-heating, & I discover I have a car with a blown head-gasket. The service rep tried to tell me it was overheating "because" the head-gasket was blown---but when I took it back to my REGULAR mechanic, he explained a blown head-gasket happens BECAUSE the car has been allowed to overheat--it is a RESULT of overheating, not a cause of it. Bottom line--my car was healthy when it went in, and when it came out it was ruined. I should never have gone there. I should have stayed away from the dealership and gone to my regular mechanic. The Service rep talked over me, tried to put the blame on an "oil leak" (when they found NONE--at least that they mentioned to me--at time of service--when I checked out on Wed. 6/28 they pronounced EVERYTHING as "fine" and said they had "checked it over thoroughly"). They did a fuel sys flush, and my REGULAR mechanic told me the car MUST NOT JUST BE LEFT ALONE RUNNING during that process---it CAN overheat. I cannot PROVE that's what happened---but I went IN with a healthy car, and went OUT with a broken one. I just pray the engine hasn't also received permanent damage. Counting their (overpriced) "maintenance" plus what it will cost to get my car fixed now, I'm $2000 in the hole. THANKS A LOT, Gwinnett Place Honda!
Updating 7/8/17 to add: Received a call after posting this thread from Kam Cheung, Service Manager at Gwinnett Place Honda---he was willing to fix car for parts cost only but it was already at my own mechanic's who had identified the true problem (NOT an "oil leak" as the servicewriter (Rick Zarpentine) tried to claim, and DEFINITELY not overheating "because" of the blown head gasket but rather the other way around). I was not about to put my car back into the hands of the people who caused the problem to begin with, but Mr. Cheung did refund me my earlier "repair" bill at least, which was fair. However, it cost me $1092 at my mechanic's to get the head gasket replaced, plus the overheating was so severe it had warped the head itself and damaged two of the cylinders (valves?) so that they also had to be re-done. Catalytic converter also now has a HUGE crack in it--they've attempted to seal that but if it doesn't hold that will have to be replaced as well. I am not happy. This is $1092 out of my pocket that would not have happened if someone had been more vigilant in watching my car and noticed it was over-heating during this servicing. Something went very, very wrong, and I will not be putting any cars into their hands again. I am grateful for Mr. Cheung's attempt to reach out to me, but I'm still $1092 in the hole and have fear I've not seen the end of this yet.
