The phone system is pathetic. It's all but impossible to get through to talk to anyone. If and when you get to speak to an operator and they transfer you to a specific area it goes right back to the automated system and your right back where you started.

I cannot reach any of the numbers in the clinic. Now I have to drive up to the VA, wait over an hour for a walk-in just so that the doctor can tell me something that he could have said over the phone.
This is the second visit to this facility and I'm very impressed with the speed of the appointments and lab work. Yes, it's difficult to make an appointment over the phone but that's the only problem I've encountered. I even walked in today at 8am, saw the nurse, bloodwork, dr and prescriptions all done by 1130am...can't ask for more than that.
All the staff I've dealt with over the years has been wonderful. During some serious health problems I had the doctor's made their own phone calls to me. The staff and doctors are all keepers.
Worst hospital EVER for veterans. The staff are always extremely rude and unprofessional. Especially the ones working the primary care desk! Smacking on gum, not fully listening to your symptoms and always checking their personal phones. I really hate this place. It is ashame i fought for this country but yet get the low level service of a place like this. If one could afford it they should seek medical attention elsewhere.
Its unacceptable to spend multiple days on the phone never speaking to anyone just being on hold. If you do get an answer its usually because the phone system sent you to the main switchboard because no one answers phones ever. Its hard enough getting to see a doctor without waiting months but near impossible to make an appointment. This is why Vets are at their wits end while trying to get help.
My provider at the Austin VS is excellent and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about her. The facility is also new and most of the time when an go in for blood work I'm in and out in no time. I also find most staff are very nice and want to help people. I've only encountered a few rude staff members which is not pleasant for anyone to encounter anywhere.
Now for the negative side, in order for me to have my current provider I had to change providers since the first doctor was extremely rude (some Indian female doctor). My only other complain in that every time I call the VA I can NEVER get anyone on the line for assistance. I have pushed 0 to talk to an operator and 5 to talk to a nurse and each time it takes me back to the main menu. It's not the first time....which is why I was prompted to write this review.
I can't find one negative thing to say about this facility or it's staff. To heck with obama care, Medicare etc. If I'm still able to walk I'm coming here.
It s mostly okay. Most of my providers are really great. But one seems utterly clueless because I am under the age of 65. Receptionists at clinic counters are the weakest link. I got to stand in line with 4 other veterans while 2/4 were socializing, one was making a phone appointment, and the last was just sitting there blankly. I also almost always have to wait well past my scheduled appointment time. I m writing this review 34 minutes past my scheduled appointment - this is especially ridiculous because it s an appointment for a vaccination... 30 seconds of work. Finally, good luck making an appointment. They ALWAYS tell you to walk in. If I had the time to do a walk in, or the inclination, I wouldn t have called to schedule an appointment. I am about one occurrence of this from really giving the receptionists a piece of my mind.
I'm not sure where to begin. I'm a veteran of the Navy and just found out I would be eligible for VA healthcare. I'm told I have to appear at the clinic to make an appointment. I drive the 50 minutes to the Metropolis location. The first day I arrive in January, I'm told I should have called to make an appointment instead of driving all the way out there. I tell her I was told I had no choice. She shrugs and goes about looking at Dr. availability. I'm told there are no appointments until April. That's expected, I fill out the paperwork and make the appointment but state I'm almost out of birth control and need to see a family planning doctor as well. They tell me to go right up, they have availability today. The Gyno desk is so rude, and tells me this is not how things work, I need an appointment. I say no problem, but I was told to come up here. I go back down and state what just happened. They say to hold on, and handle the situation behind the scenes. A manager comes out and says, we don't turn people away, go back up. I go back up and I'm met with worse attitude and more waiting saying a nurse will be with me. They take my vitals and I never see a Dr. Marci says if I want birth control(gildess has already been prescribed to me) I have to get a blood and urine test to make sure I'm not pregnant. I wait 2 hours! Get the test done and done hear anything back for 3 weeks. The "phone number" they provide is some limbo waiting process where I tried to get results 6 different times at a minimum wait time of 2 hours! Today I finally reach Marci. She tells me the Dr. will not prescribe me bc she doesn't know my medical history. She cold and flippant. I said I filled out the form AND gave you blood and urine- how much history do you need?! After all this wasted time of course I get upsets and demand to know why I can't get the meds I need? She says the same thing over and over and I hung up bc it's pointless talking to someone who could care less. This was the biggest waste of time I can think of. Awful awful place and I'm going to be transferring to Killeen for my care.
This facility provides one of the best care giving experienced in over 30 years. Anyone not recognizing this has an unreal expectation of medical care. When you consider the number of patients served, we are very lucky to have this facility in Austin.
I've signed up for MyHealtheVet. I order medications, check appointments, look over lab reports, and speak to the Doctor. She asked if I had signed up for that. Since, if I have any questions or problems I secure message her. I get quick responses, either from her or the nurse. One of my Doctors was very BAD, I told the desk I wanted a new Doctor. They said no problem and reassigned me a new one that Day. They do have faults, the phone system is a major One of them. That is why I chose to use the internet.
I have been going here at least once a month for nearly four years and it is one of the best facilities the VA has to offer, especially compared to others. I love the doctor's there and over all the staff department are great. I see the lab and pharmacy as well as occasionally the travel personnel. They are all really friendly and professional and willing to go out of their way to help. In many, many ways I prefer this clinic to temple. The only complaint I have right now would be that my travel pay has constantly been wrong for about six months now and you only have about a 50/50 shot of getting a star bucks coffee there. They need to enlist a schedule to clean the coffee machine when it's not peak coffee drinking times. I went there this morning and they told me they were "cleaning the coffee machine, we haven't done it in a really long time". First of all gross, second of all, do it at the end of the day. It's not the first time they have lost my business for coffee sales. Before I think it was there was no one there who knew how to do it. Anyways, if you're still reading this, the behavioral health clinic is great and the pharmacy is really fast and I love them!
A busy place. The doors open at 6A.M. walk in services start at 7:30 they have certain clinics from 6:30 p.m. & Saturday appointment. Services from primary care XRay, MRI, pharmacy, eatery, ,a lab
I've left in tears every time I've gone as I'm missing s leg and they never help. I dre why vets kill themselves. Its almost like they screw you on purpose to see if you will...
I finally have an excellent primary care doctor at this clinic, but MH providers here have gone from bad to just atrocious. The last one I was assigned to (very skinny Caucasian male, formerly worked with PRISON INMATES, whose name I cannot remember) was the absolute WORST. EVER. I ve given up on getting any help from MH after my last couple of encounters with him. After past experiences with him (and other providers) in the MH clinic, it doesn t surprise me in the least that a veteran committed suicide in the waiting room last week (as horrible and overwhelmingly sad as that is). MH needs a complete overhaul (as do many of the support staff and janitorial staff at this OPC). We deserve so much better than what we are receiving here.
I transferred from Los Angeles. At the eligibility counter the lady told me to go back to LA... the guy working next to her was rude. Finally saw a NP that wouldn't help and said after they did "research" I haven't been to the VA in over a year, well I was there 2 months ago... I've been waiting to draw blood for and hour and a half and can't pick up my perscption until after the blood draw. This place is full of rude a-holes.
On hold just now over 33 minutes to be told something they could have put on their automated system. If you relocate you have to go to the building to be assigned another primary doctor. Just bring personal documentation, DD214 and SSN any thing from VA with your calm.
I've had a the run around for 6 months to get a surgery, still haven't got it and no one calls me back. I've called my primary care, as he won't call me back. Even the advocate won't call me back. I've left them 3 messages. His name is George Cervantes and he is the advocate at the temple va.
Beware!! I have a relative that used to work there and they told me that the machine to perform colon cleansing gave patients Hepatitis C, because they were using the same adapter for each patients colon!! Disgusting!! My father is a veteran and whenever he goes the the VA it is a disaster!! He had gotten sick last season with pneumonia the VA sent him home with allergy medication. Later that night he had to call 911 and they said he could've died. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
Dr. Rollinson is a nice guy, but because of his age, his office hours are EXTREMELY short which causes his appointments to have to be scheduled more than 6 months out...No one should have to wait that long to be seen.
I've always been treated right and with dignity here and at the hospital in Tucson, AZ. If anyone wants to whine, they should do it to their congress reps who don't authorize more money for help. I'm happy enough to spend some time reading my novel or newspaper while someone actually wounded in combat gets his/her care. Sometimes I get up and talk with the complainers to remind them that other warriors, far more needy than he or I, should go first. After all, these people are doing as much as they can on limited funds, so the last the need is another "peacetime hero" bellyaching because he must spend an hour longer than he planned before his golf game! Al Shaff a very appreciative peacetime warrior who served because it's MY country, MY people and MY security.
Fantastic staff and quick to respond called today to report problem with cpap and got an appointment for tomorrow. Much faster than my wife s civilian care provider
Admin staff are respectful, but couldn't look less interested in helping anyone. The doctors spend more time wrestling with the slow computer system than helping patients, and the nurses, who are the backbone of the clinic seem perpetually exhausted. The wait time for lab work is ridiculous; expect a 1-3 wait for a blood draw. When calling, I have been on hold for over an hour, if anyone picks up at all. Appointments usually take 4-12 weeks. If you need urgent care, walk-in waits can be 6-10 hours.
The way to get registered and setup appointments is to physically go to the clinic. Calling on phone is a waste of time. The staff was friendly and the building is huge. Tons of parking available. The appointments I received were weeks away. Odd I only saw 10 patients in the clinic.
I have been on the phone for about 45min. The automated system is flawed. You cannot make or change a mental health appointment without talking directly to the mental health schedulers at Austin VA. Can't tell you how many times my call was kicked to temple VA because no one at Austin is picking up phones. So finally, I'm talking to Austin mental health and I ask the lady if the appointment can be moved to later that week. Without my consent she canceled my appointment and stated I could have an appointment in September. I said no I would rather keep my appointment I have well guess what she put a new appointment that I can't make it to and canceled my appointment without my consent. And that just sums up VA patient care.
I'm giving this place 2 stars because I have dealt with one staff counselor who brought this review up from one star. I generally have a standing 1630 (2:30 for the rest of you) appointment. My past 2 visits I have tried to check in with Azure at one of the check in stations only to be told that they are closed. She only checks her system after I get frustrated. Most Veterans don't want to use the VA and many that have are discussed with it. So what Veteran would walk in and lie about a scheduled appointment. Not is guy, I have better things to do than lie about an appointment at the dysfunctional VA. But as we all know Azure is a Union protected VA employee who will never suffer any consequences for her lack of professionalism, compassion, or empathy. Azure, I feel you have the second most noble profession, taking care of the most noble of professions "Watching America's Back". The VA should not have a Union and all complaints against this public, opps, I meant Veterans health care system should be investigated by a non affiliated government agency. Goodbye Austin VA Clinic!
Since Dr. Martin has retired the care has gone down dramatically. My husband has been between two different Doctors one was horrible the second is okay, but his staff is clueless and rude. The VA should employee people who want to help and not those who think they are untouchable. I reached out on Tuesday to talk with a Patient Advocacy rep and still have not received a call back. Very disappointed with the way thos,VA treats people!
Worst va I have ever been to. The staff are rude yet polite as they ignore your input. I have been there 5 times and 3 of them were for medication and they wouldn't refill them all at once. Getting anything done for disability claims is virtually impossible I have found out in my experience. Good news primary care is fast. Not that busy but it makes sense why. If transferring from another va they will NOT follow your previous doctor's plan of treatment.the homeless team will not help unless you are living on the streets and then they will only hand you a info sheet of local shelters. Again this is my experience and every person is different but it left such a bad taste in my mouth I wish it closed down. Horrible clinic/hospital serving veterans........ is not what they do best at Austin va.
Some staff are good. Bad Experiences with first Doctor I had assigned to me. Forget about being a walk-in patient, they never saw me in most visits when I did not have an Appointment.
They haven't killed me yet, but then I haven t given them much of an opportunity. Management really need to work on the actual care part of healthcare, aside from having some nice people that are apologetic to us as customers, I really feel like this place is a mess. I ve witnessed employees treating each other downright awful, and some of the most helpful people I have been treated by have hinted at how the work environment is toxic. Going in for my second annual at this clinic soon, will let you all know how it goes. On a good note, it looks like they may have fixed the hold issue, every time I have called in the past year I have waited less than 3 minutes.
The struggle of my life, it was already bad before COVID Now nobody answers the phone. They look at you for 15 minutes before they call you to the window, while they do nothing but conversate over lunch smh. This is the WORST veteran care ever. I have been calling for a week trying to get to the Texas Veteran Commision, I cant come up there because its appointments only and I cant call because apparently all the phones have been unplugged. Can we PLEASE GET GOOD SERVICE FOR OUR VETERANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lets see, 3-4 months to get a stinking appointment. Staff likes to give you numbers that ring and ring and ring. Choice program is a complete joke. Better pack a lunch if you need to be seen same day because it will literally take all day to be seen. Lets not get me started on blood pressure meds that my cardiologist wants me to have and I cannot get. This is just a few "wonderful" experiences I have with the VA.
I have seen some comments on here say that others who complain, have an unrealistic view of health care. No this is what Bureaucratic BS looks like. I do not feel lucky at all to have this crappy facility. Its no different than the treatment at the Denver VA. To me its a BS dog and pony show. If I could give negative stars, believe me I would.
Worse place I been for VA Care. The term FIX THE VA comes from a facility like this and how it operates. The staff are very inconsiderate, rude and just there for the Gov check nothing else. Also the wait time for appointments can be an hour before seen and then want rush you out and don't care why your there. If you re seeking to apply for VA benefits seek elsewhere the Texas Veterans Commission there are worthless and just drawing a VA check and end there 4pm time not caring who they talked to that day. Even the VA Police needs cleaning up, was stopped by the VA Police for going 2 miles over the limit in the facility and stated next time will be arrested and said my DL was invalid which was false. Told me after my appointment to leave the property and never come back. Real nice treatment for giving 9 year's service to my country in a combat field and being deployed every time they asked. Would recommend to take Veterans Choice Program at a private facility and stay away from this place until they fix the VA.
I have had all my medical needs met, also the the clinic houses other sevice organizations that handle claims. The lab can be slow in the mornings so I go late in the afternoon when its no line.
I've had nothing but great support from this VA facility. Longest wait in the 4 years I've been coming here has been 30 minutes but it's usually under 10. Great place and super team.
The access to care is pretty bad and the reasoning they always give is they are understaffed. Yet in the year I've been recieving care at this facility, they seem to always be understaffed. I've had appointments cancelled without my knowledge and then offered an appointment two months out. Completely unacceptable. I recently saw an incredibly rude provider in the eye clinic. Other than one eye-clinic provider, a majority of the providers are competent, caring, and compassionate people. The primary issues with this VA is access to care, it's challenging to get anyone on the phone, they are only open 8-4 which is an issue if you have a job, and there seems to be a high provider turnover which leads to lapses in care. I've had issues getting perscriptions filled because my provider retired or left and no one seems to be filling in for them. This VA inadequately serves a growing community and completely fails at serving employed veterans given their limited appointment offerings and limited hours they are open.
I have been going to this clinic for many years and have yet to experience any issues that are worth writing about. As one reviewer wrote, the wait time at the lab can get lengthy, but they do process a high volume of patients. Now getting someone there to answer the phone, that can be a very trying experience.
The VA system is still broken and the government is trying to curve costs on treating patients. I transferred my care to this clinic from where I used to live. I was receiving medication because of a diagnosis from a VA doctor at this previous location. When I transferred I was told I would no longer receive the medication because there was no proof of this diagnosis. This was ridiculous after having been sent to endocrinologists outside the VA and receiving a diagnosis by the specialist. Never have I been so disheartened for being turned away after serving in a combat zone as an Infantry Corpsman for this country. The fancy building is nice to only look at.
These people are impossible to get on the phone and when they do answer they cold transfer me every time to someone who will then transfer me to a line that does not pick up. Any process that requires my information to be passed between departments to complete such as a specialty consult is guaranteed to not be completed despite assurances that they will be and requires constant follow up. Following up requires me to start at a call center in Temple every time because these people do not want to be contacted directly. It is a full time job making sure my patient care needs are being fulfilled so it is no wonder the VA is stereotyped as not caring bout their patients. The only semblance of care is received if I go to the clinic in person to take care of these things, which I, like most people, cannot do because I have to make a living during the day Monday through Friday. Even when I do go there, interdepartmental tasks like specialty consults cannot be addressed by the staff for whatever reason. About half of the people here need to be fired and then the VA needs to rehire people like the half that kept their jobs.
Today was my first ever visit to a VA medical facility and with all the recent publicity, I wasn't sure what to expect, but let me tell you that the VA center in Austin is a First Class facility, run by First Class people providing First Class service. Wait times were shorter than expected, the providers were very professional and knowledgeable, and above all THEY CARED!!

Nice multimillion dollar facility, too bad there's still NO EMERGENCY ROOM. If you have a serious illness and need help immediately, drive an hour plus and hope that you make it or go to a local ER and be ready to have bills that you likely can't pay. Look on the bright side, I guess if you don't make it, you won't have to worry about the bills or lack of emergency care.
The quality of clerks helping in all stations is very disappointing, alot of the time you can just tell they are here for a check. Even asking for basic information on either locations to go for appointments, or just how to get travel pay worked out, seems to be a great burden to them, aka doing their job. I see why alot of reviews are so angry because it's all the same for everyone and noone seems to eveny try to get anything fixed. Even updating basic contact information to get medications sent is a train wreck. Updated it 6 different times in 6 different departments and all seem to have no link to show updated. It took a month to get first set of medications tracked down, while the second round made it before the first, and messes up appointment dates for those meds. Then the vicious cycle starts all over again. No vets should have to go with out their viable necessary medications. There is no way for any discrepancies anyone has to be reported, put on hold for hours to just be directed to more areas that never get anything worked out. Even the website has no way to contact any kind of complaints. I can understand that they would be overwhelmed with them but...something must be done. I dont expect this to be read and or handled but it's the only other place I see to let it be known that sure it's a great building and all this money spent on face value, but on the inside it's still the untrained, unprofessionalism of clerk and check in staff per useual. Now yes there are a few decent ones, and I mean few but it's all thrown out the window when you have to deal with someone who makes every one look bad. Vets just want decent health care, not to come in and have their blood pressure, anxiety, depression, or stress levels shoot through the roof. Just fix it... for Vets sake....this I'm sure is just the tip of the iceberg for many of people.
I retired from the Army about 10 years ago. Always relied on my Tricare insurance for medical care. But since I get VA disability, thought I would try the Austin Clinic. It was an amazing experience and I have returned there ever since as a "regular." Once you get past the noisy lobby, the long line at the lab and all the "volunteers" wanting to give you directions, the medical personnel are top notch. I have obtained a hearing aid with excellent care and follow-up, I now use a VA doc as my primary care physician and think the world of her. I had a colonoscopy here and it went like clockwork and was pain free. Everyone I have met with at this location are smart, caring and pleasant. Sorry about those who complain about long waits on the phone or in the labs, but just bring a book and expect to wait. It will be worth your time. I love having this clinic in Austin.
No er or urgent care is kinda scary, waiting hours just to have a simple procedure done, clearing the wax out of your ears, and you sit and watch nurses walk around not doing nothing. Va choice needs to be here, so people won't have to come here
It would be a lot easier to give this place any stars at all if I'd actually had a chance to even speak with them. I've gotten a surly answer to my phone call, a transfer, and now going on three hours on hold. This is unacceptable.
OUTSTANDINGLY horrible , on 11 January 2017 at 15:45 I was speaking with a lady on the phon about making an appointment . In the middle of the conversation she said hey it's time for me to go home and hanged up the phone, wow. If I was dying she wouldn't care two shakes because it's time to go home. Then we wonder why there are crazy vets running around shooting people. The VA is a sorry wast of tax dollars.
I have received excellent care at this clinic. I first went to Brooks in San Antonio where I received excellent care, but was told that I needed to go to Audie Murphy. While at Audie Murphy I received excellent care also. My follow up appointments have been with the Austin clinic. The people here have treated me with utmost respect, professionalism and in a very timely manner. I had cataract surgery at the VA in Temple and they also gave me excellent care. I have not had to wait for my appointments to be scheduled and they have followed up with me in a timely manner. I am extremely happy with the care that I have received through the VA. Thank you very much to all of the doctors, nurses, pharmacists and all other staff.
This is a very well laid-out clinic. Unlike other hospitals and clinics where you go in the front door and then have to wind your way through a bunch of hallways and poorly marked doors, this clinic has almost everything open to a large central mall-like area. So, when you go the the information desk and ask them where something is, they can just point to it from where they are sitting and you can walk there in a few steps. My hat's off to the architects.
I am a naturopath and I take care of my own seasonal illnesses with herbs and homeopathic remedies. I am also very in tune with my own body and I listen to what it is telling me. I eat a high fiber, low fat, low sugar, nutrient dense diet of mostly cooked and raw vegetables, making sure to get plenty of probiotics, probiotics, and omega 3/6/9 fatty acids. I get plenty of exercise, both stretching and aerobic. I rarely get sick and hardly ever go to the doctor. When I do, it is because am worried that something serious might be going on. My experience of the VA has been excellent in every way. I find they listen to my concerns, order relevant tests, and their diagnostics comprehensive. When I arrive early, I am often seen before my appointment time. They respect my reluctance to become dependent on pharmaceutical drugs and do not pressure me to take anything if I know of an herbal alternative. I could not be more pleased with the care I am getting.
I have been coming to this facility since it opened. I stopped going to Mental health when they changed doctors on me. They took away meds I have been on for 30 years that worked and are experimenting with other meds that I don t like. Why try to fix something that works. I like my primary care doctor, but have had some problems with mental health, pain management and the pharmacy. So there are some doctors I like and some I don t. For years Christine Horton was my Dr.s assistant and she was an angel. She passed away from cancer in 2018 and it broke my heart. But over all they most of them do try their best.
Learn how to draw blood. My husband has gone twice now to get blood work done here. The area where blood was taken has severe bruising. And my husband is severely sore. Ridiculous.
Pri care dr or nurse never returns calls. I had biopsy 1 1/2 month ago still never heard a damn word about it left many messages for nurse even call main number and they say we will have them call you. nothing happens. I am 70% SC and 50% PTSD and i am. The austin clinic is terrible i hate their staff and will call as fir up as i can. It probably waisted time for us vets. They can all go to hell
