Thousands upon thousands of Tori gates (the red gates that make this temple pilgrimage site so popular), and even more statues of the Inari Fox god. Get there early to truly appreciate the space. And I mean sunrise early. You ll be alone, with the photographers. If you arrive with the throngs, don t be upset at the first few area with gates, keep walking up and take the paths that deviate front the main path. You ll shake off those hoardes. The summit is not really a destination so don t rush to get to the top. There s no pay off view, those are a little further down.
Each shop/cafe has a different vibe and price! Some are reasonable, some unreasonable.
It s a really wonderful place to meander. Lots of steps, and on a hot day you ll want plenty of water, but there are drink machines and shops all the way up.
The best cafe is called Vermillion and I found it on the way down. Amazing Macha Latte and baguette. All in an outside terrace by the lake.

Extremely crowded with tourists especially at the row of torii gates. Tons of people waiting to take a photo there. Try going up a little bit further to get your photos taken as there will be fewer people the further you go. I climbed all the way to the mountain peak and down. It was tiring though but worth it! At about halfway the mountain climb, you will find a place to sit and enjoy the view and sunset if you reach there around 6pm.

I get off at JR inari station for work everyday. I love being able to see this shrine on my way to work. It s a really great place to explore and the views from the top of the mountain are spectacular.

You can easily spend half a day here. The hike up Mt. Inari was a bit tiring but fun nonetheless. Don't let the word 'hike' intimidate you because you're really just ascending a lot of stairs, which aren't steep by any means. Even if you don't reach the summit you'll still see a lot of things along the way, including several shrines, small shops, and of course the gorgeous senbon torii. I'd recommend at least going up to the crossroads though, where you can already see a beautiful view of Kyoto. You can also have lunch at the relatively large shop there, where they serve Inari's specialty, the Kitsune Udon and Kitsune sushi (both delicious).

Next to the main shrine at the base, there are several souvenir shops and stalls selling street food such as yakitori, dorayaki, and even crab legs.

Fushimi Inari is conveniently placed right in front of the exit of Inari station so you won't have a problem getting here.

The fushimi inari taisha creates another atmaosphere of its own. The path in the middle of the forest although filled with solitude is calming and a great escape from the city lofe full of busy work hours. The walls along the trail from top to bottom is a great and there are many relaxing spots in the middle with little shrines where there is always something to look at. The view from on of the main points of the trail is amazing and walking the trail is one of the best ways to relax and enjoy nature while not being far away from the city in an easily accessible area. Overall this is a great place to visit.

A great place to visit and simple to get to if you are unfamiliar travelling in Japan - the train station is but a 5 minute walk away. I went with my wife and two children 8 and 5 years old who had no issue with climbing any of the paths or steps to get to the top. It's mostly under shade so you don't have to worry too much about getting about in the direct sun. Plenty of drink vending machines all the way to the top if you forget your own or don't care about the slightly inflated tourist prices. Take the advice that lots of people say - keep walking and the crowds soon thin out and there are lots of places for the selfie or family portrait without a hundred other people in it.

This is one of the most famous places and must-visit in Kyoto. Inside the shrine is very quiet and peaceful. Thousands of Torii along the way are very beautiful and iconic. You can visit this shrine for free. There is street food next to the shrine. Getting to this is easy by JR Nara line getting off the train at Inari station. If you want to take pictures without the crowd, I really recommend you to come early.

It was worth seeing, even in the rain. There are food stalls at the bottom and then the main entrance of the shrine. There were a ton of people and going up to the top of the shrine was a trek but well worth it to digest all that rich food! Beware of tourists who stop to take pictures, they can cause a bit of a traffic jam. Pro tip: go to the second or third level of shrine and you'll find more space and less people.

Don't be put off by the number of visitors at the start. While it can be crowded in the lower path - where you'll see the iconic closely packed torii - many visitors venture no further than the first loop. By the time you reach the summit the crowd has thinned. The path to the summit is definitely a climb, but it's not too strenuous and there are refreshments available at a few points along the path.

I have been to Kyoto a few times before but never stopped here. It was interesting to see all of the torii gates lined up representing the many donors to the shrine. We hiked all the way up to the top hoping to have a nice viewpoint but there was no scenic view. My suggestion is to only go up about 1/3 of the way to the actual scenic point as there is not as much to see that is unique beyond that. Lots of steps with incline and decline grades so be ready for that.

This was probably the best experience I had in Japan. Don't believe those that say there is not much more to see after the lookout point at the crossroads up the mountain. Up the left path there is really beautiful nature amongst numerous little shrines all clustered and covered in moss in a way that reminds me of a Mayan temple (just what comes to mind). Go early enough so you don't get stuck on the mountain after sun down. Bring water and prepare for quite an exertion if you want to go to the top and down again.

I mean... if you love Japan and it is your first visit... THIS IS A MUST!
Fushimi Inari-taisha is a very popular shrine in Kyoto, I even recognized it from a lot of Japanese references or pictures that I saw in my own country.
Just be ready for a great walk, enjoy the red beautiful corridor and don't forget your wish ! It is to the god Inari and doing this was a nice experience (don't forget to also write things you are greatful for and don't disrespect the practice, please!).
If you want to take cool pictures, I recommend to at least try it early in the morning, because it gets veeeery crowded.

I'd heard that this is the most popular tourist destination in Kyoko, so I was prepared for it to be crowded, and to be underwhelmed - it's complicated.
Yes, it was crowded - not as crowded at 9am as it was when we left near noon, but crowded enough at the lower part of the tori gates tunnels to turn walking into almost shuffling. However, by the mid-point, the crowd had thinned by half. So not as crowded as I'd feared.
And I have to say that I was wrong about the quality of the experience. The colors, culture, and views more than justified the crowds and the climb.
Three points: 1. Find an English map of the climb. 2. Do the complete loop at the top - the left-hand half has beautiful deeply wooded areas. 3. Look for the toilets on the map and use them - they're few and far between.

My family and I arrived around 8 am so there wasn t that much people yet so we were able to take several pictures. Though the hike going to the main shrine was long and tiring, I would recommend you to wear comfortable shoes.

a top destination for most tourists making it quite awfully crowded, disrupting a supposedly quiet and peaceful atmosphere one usually expects in temple grounds. but if you happen to catch a shrine ritual it can be culturally uplifting. be sure to adhere to temple grounds policies as security is quite aptly strict

Beautiful sight.

Beautiful sight.
Amazing views, calm location to walk around. Go to the top and see the shrines.
Visit it during the night if you want see it with few or almost no people.
Shops are closed during the night and the toilets are only at the entrance. Be sure to go before you start the journey.

This was one of the top five highlights of our two week trip to Japan. I've seen a lot about this shrine over the years but seeing it in person leaves one feeling breathless. Plan to spend sometime here exploring the entire mountain, there are wonderful gift shops all over that have things you cannot find anywhere else. There are also a lot of picture opportunities, not only of the shrine but of the city below as well.

This shrine contains a different vibe among all the other shrines in Kyoto. Though full of tourists all the time, you can feel the positivity while walking through the passage. A bit of less people as you travel upward. Better to travel early in the morning.

For me, this was one of my most favourite parts of my very brief Kyoto visit. Taking a quick train to Inari station, I made a quick visit to this temple. It was unfortunate that I was unable to walk all the way to the top of the mountain which, I am told, has a very beautiful view of the city of Kyoto.

Great experience and rewarded with awesome views at the top! Worth the climb to the top but would recommend going through the forest route as it is quieter and more tranquil as less people take it and then going down through the orange More

A sacred place and you can definitely feel some sort of ambience that separates it from anywhere else. The amount of torii gates just add to the allure it gives. Definitely a place to see but if you want to take amazing pictures near the senbon torii or between the gates I suggest going early like before 8 am.

One of the main attractions in Kyoto. The place is only visitable in the high season if you get there before 8:30. Otherwise it is just flooded with tourists and there is no way you can enjoy this place. Beautiful complex with a very long possible walk up in the hills.

Came at the end of October on a Friday morning, at around 9am. It was raining non stop and very crowded. There's a street leading up to the shrine that sells a lot of souvenirs and snacks. It's all quite expensive though. Shopkeepers are helpful and friendly.

The shrine itself is actually very big. It's spread out over a large area with a lot of small buildings. The torii gates are at the back. It took me about an hour and a half to walk through the torii gates. The gates were super crowded and people just stopped in the middle of nowhere to take photos, causing congestion. There's also a shrine here for students to pass exams so you see many groups of students.

Definitely a must-see for tourists although beware how crazy crowded it is.

Brings back "memoirs of a Geisha". Picturesque place. Some trekking involved requiring medium endurance. Be prepared to spend your entire morning. Go as early as 6 am to avoid the crowds. JR pass works from Kyoto to Inari.

This is an amazing place and must visit place. You don't want to miss this place as part of your Kyoto itinerary. The main temple need a little bit of walking from the station and if you love hiking, you can follow the "red gates" all the way up the hill. They are numerous spots you can get magnificent view of the city in between the way lead you up to the top of the hill.

Arrive as early as possible if you want to avoid crowds and want pictures with no people at the tori gates.

There's a hidden trail just before the Mitsurugi area trail where you can find the Okami shrine.

If you wish to take photo with less people around,...

If you wish to take photo with less people around, be at the shrine just after sunrise.(may need night mode camera on your phone to take photos of the right exposure) Also, climbing higher would help in avoiding the crowd too. A full round around the shrine can take up to 2hours, much longer if you are wearing kimono/yukata. Try to come when there is fine weather, as shelters from the rain are pretty rare.
Previously when we tried to source for the best value kimono/yukata rental, we went with near Fushimi-inari Station. You probably want to check out their website early as reserving 1 day before hand is cheaper than renting on the actual visit.
