Don't be put off by the number of visitors at the start. While it can be crowded in the lower path - where you'll see the iconic closely packed torii - many visitors venture no further than the first loop. By the time you reach the summit the crowd has thinned. The path to the summit is definitely a climb, but it's not too strenuous and there are refreshments available at a few points along the path.
