This is an amazing place and must visit place. You don't want to miss this place as part of your Kyoto itinerary. The main temple need a little bit of walking from the station and if you love hiking, you can follow the "red gates" all the way up the hill. They are numerous spots you can get magnificent view of the city in between the way lead you up to the top of the hill.
