Major tourist spot in Kyoto with thousands of red gates. It's quite a sight to see, but go early as it gets crowded very quickly. If you're into hiking, it's about a 40 to 50 minute walk up to the top and there are some cool waterfalls along the way if you stray off the beaten path.

Note, however, that there is no view at the top. There is just a shrine very similar to the ones along the route up.

A must-visit place in Kyoto to experience their culture. The place is big enough to accommodate a lot of tourists. You can see a lot of good spots to take pictures. You can also feel the serenity of the place and be one with nature. There are a lot of resting spots for your tired feet. Just bring a bottled water because you will be thirsty for walking a lot.

Solid history and background . Didn't have a chance to hike all the way. Fair few crowds so go early if you wish to take photos in isolation (or later in evening) . Must see in Kyoto and lives upto everything you see in the photos.

If you are just visiting the Shrine at the base of Mt.Inari than it will just be another shrine. But if you decide to do a 5km hike to the summit and down, that this will be an experience to remember. At the base is crowded but the higher you go the less crowdy it gets. All together there are 12.000 steps to walk and 10.000 Torii to pass.
It is easy hike but can get very hot in tge summer.

This place is amazing. Beautiful temple at the beginning then a thousand of Tori along your walking/hiking until the top of the mountain Inari. We did it by night and it was so mystical! More than recommended :)

Really amazing and breathtaking place. Last I visited it was night time and I really wanted to experience the magic of this place with day light and it didn't disappoint. My only recommendation would be going there really early. I was there at around 8am and there was already quite a few people, after the trek around 10 am there were endless people there.

This place is a one day trip! Be prepared to be woke from 12k+ steps up this mountain! This pathway is absolutely amazing and have so much history behind them!

Walking up the stairs is an eye opening experience! According to many locals, walking through the shrine will be wisdom gained that can only felt by the individual.

Prepare a bottle of water and sip along the way, take pictures and enjoy nature because you'll never see another place like this and DONT give up! You will feel reborn once you get to the top and the feeling is indescribable!

There will be certain sections (like the half way mark) that you can overview the entire city of Kyoto. If you go early during the day you can reward yourself with many delicious stalls once you come back down! Watch your steps if it gets dark, the steps become relatively hard to see. Dont want to go rolling down the mountain after climbing 12k steps

Leave early in the morning if you want to avoid the tour groups!!! BEST ADVICE for this place.
We left at 6AM to reach here for the opening and was maybe the best idea we had during this visit.
As soon as we arrived, we had peace and quiet and the visit was relaxing and calm.
We managed to get many good photos capturing the beauty of all the pillars.
Its amazing how the light from the sun makes every corner of this place light up!
It went all downhill around 10AM (as we were leaving). Hordes of people, tour groups mainly arrived and the quietness went straight out the window! Luckily, we were leaving at this point, and even getting out of this place was stressful, as we had to navigate between crowds to reach freedom.
I cannot emphasise to how horrible it was, the tourists were loud, littering, and making the narrow archways blocked. A 5-minute journey to the exit will take you 20 minutes. Be prepared!
This place is definitely a place you should visit if you are around the area, it is one of my highlights from Japan . Just remember VISIT EARLY and AVOID tourists! It is the best advice anyone can give about this place! Oh, and bring insect repellent, ended up with bite marks all over!

The path of Torii all through the top is really amazing, especially during night hours, when it's quiet, not crowded, maybe one or two kittens around. It may seem that it's a never ending journey, but when you get to the top, you will have a fulfilled feeling. The lights during night are giving you a great show of colors, shadows and spiderwebs. Although, you will see a sign with wild boars, in order to be aware of them, don't panic or make sudden moves if you hear anything moving in the side forest, as long as you stay on your path and not cross over the edges you are safe. Definitely a well worthed journey!

Horribly crowded. Couldn't feel the place. The food on the way is overpriced, so once you back and hungry, another crowded and expensive spot at the bottom. Dirtiest public toilet I ve seen in Japan was there.

Busy at the start of the path but the crowds trail off as you get further up the mountain. Nice mountain hike, not too difficult. Good views over Osaka near the top. Lights come on after dark so you can do it during the late evening if you like for nighttime views and a spookier atmosphere if you like.

Don't make the mistake of arriving later than 8am...the crowds are HORRENDOUS...loads of tourists who do nothing but take selfies and ruin the serenity and dharma of this special place. We went home 20 minutes after arriving at 9:00am to return the next day at 6:00am and walked to the top and back with only a few fellow tourists and local Japanese attending for worship

If you're visiting Kyoto for the first time, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you also visit Fushimi-Inari Taisha. The beautiful temple complex with its pathways of thousands of red toriis is so iconic that it became the default image of Japan in the mind of travelers.

Come in early in the morning for less crowds. If you enter via the bus stop side, you will also find food stalls near the entrance.

The main reason why I wanted to see this temple was for the archway paths but it was really a gauntlet of selfies. The vanity of others made this place hard to enjoy. Also, the little ice cream place is overpriced and not very tasty.

It's a must when visiting Kyoto. Getting to the top will take you some time and is exhausting, so just hang around but don't spend too much time on going up, not much to see there in the top

The temple and shrines architecture like all others is simply amazing and nice to look at. The tori gates that are aligned along the pathway to the top of the mountain is amazing. At different points of the path, there are viewpoints which gives you a stupendous view of the city. And at the top of the mountain, there's a beautiful shrine waiting. The hike may be tiring but I would say it is worth it. Just don't go wandering off to paths that are not part of the route.

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous!!!! Unlike like any other. On the way up, you will see restaurants and right before entering are a bunch of vendors selling snacks and dessert.

It is a steep hike up the mountain to the very top and may be hard with children. However the beautiful iconic red gates go all the way up so you could take pictures even halfway if you re children are tired. Definitely worth the trip.

Great landmark. So beautiful. Trust me if I say: if you have only one chance to be able to go to Japan, you don't want to skip this place or you'll regret it your whole life. Don't forget to write down your wish on a small plywood and hang it at the shrine wall. Also, drink the water at the entrance! Legend has it that if someone ever drank it and make a wish, your wish will come true and you'll be lucky enough to be able to get to the shrine again someday. Pray for me that someday I will be able to donate to this shrine with my name on one of its gates.

So incredibly crowded, but there are areas where there are fewer people which is where I went. Little trails into the woods were nice and quiet. Nearly impossible to take photos without other people in them because of crowds. Also bring bug spray as I got bit by a few bugs there.

Please dont waste time taking pictures at the beginning, the track to the top is abot 2.5 to 3 hours. Red Gates are all the way to the top, there will be better photo opportunities with less or no people. Safe yourself the stress
Also, when you think your on top, you actually are not

It is a beautiful place and a very busy one at that. The more we travelled Japan, the more we think that it suffers from over tourism. Free entrance. Plenty of shops selling trinkets. Plenty of places selling different types of charms. Plenty of public Toilets.

Well, it is nice to see and great if you can manage to take some good pictures as a memory...again, like all these popular touristic spots in Japan, be prepared for a huge number of people: you will need to "fight" for a good picture spot.
It might be good probably to go in the early morning...even if you will still find many 'jet lagged' tourists that have had the same idea....

One of the few attractions in the world that ends up as impressive in real life as pictures. My top recommended location to visit in the Kyoto area. It's fairly busy towards the bottom, but the crowds thin out as you climb higher.

Keep an eye out for local cats living in amongst the shrines - some of the shop keepers feed them and have donation boxes for their care.

About halfway down in the western side of the area is a kiosk selling small kitsune messenger fox statues which contain fortunes written in English. These make a fantastic souvenir or gift. Look for the area dedicated to matchmaking and you'll find the kiosk there.

Famous shrine located in the side skirts of Kyoto with the infinite "Tori Gates". Being popular, it will be very crowded during the day, and even until night. If you like taking photos without human beings, go early in the morning before the sun rises or when it is late at night. Be warned that in summer there are a lot of mosquitoes around due to the forestry terrain. Enjoy your stay, and there is no admission fee.

Really beautiful, but be prepared to hike thousands of steps to the top of the mountain. Once you get hiking the crowd quickly thins out and you can actually get some peaceful time to yourself walking in silence through the gates.

Magnificent place just south of Kyoto. Veru easy to reach from the main station of Kyoto (about 2 stops by JR). The place tend to get super crowded but it depends what you're looking for.
In case you want to avoid it, make sure to arrive early at the morning (about 630-700).
Late afternoon isn't good as traveling in the dark is a bit tense.
Try to walk easily, not rushing to the top of the hill to enjoy and appreciate the atmosphere and its history behind it. Once you start hiking up you'll see less tourist and the surroundings will be much more quite. Take a breath and enjoy the view from it.
Make sure to bring some.snack & water.

Love the place, but it's unfortunately being overrun by tourists. Come very early or late afternoon to enjoy the place with less crowds.

And please, the number of people who insist on bring strollers or trolley luggage here show they clearly have not done their research. This place (and most shrines and temples in Kyoko, for that matter) has a lot of steps and is clearly not wheel friendly. Leave them at home or give this place a miss.

I was there on Sunday afternoon and the place already packed with crowds. I suggest to go there on early morning if you want to explore more. The hiking trail is good, not too sloppy and filled with pretty landscapes around. Near the main gate, there s a small alley full of street food. I tried the beef bbq, takoyaki, mochi and rice cakes and everything s really tasty. This place is one of my favorite thing to do in Japan.

Absolutely stunning. Plan ~90min to hike up to the top. Imho sunset is the best time to visit since you have a great view over the city. At the highest Shine look for the business cards from CEOs of mayor Japanese corporations.
