Very strict for adoption. My SO was more than able to take care of his lil kitty, but they made him come back again and again because they kept having the cat get sick (they put the cat with another sick cat!)'. Luckily, he waited for the kitty (Clara) to be healthy to adopt her, and he did. But the people in the office were so incredibly petty, it was as if they didn't want him to adopt her. They were disgusting towards us, and very nasty. They made a proud, happy owner wait weeks to take care of their cat, for no reason besides that he lived on an apartment grounds where cats are allowed.
Professional staff. The facilities are very well maintained. There is no nasty smells like a lot of other animal shelters/adoption center/animal hospitals
I wouldn't choose Five Acres because one lady thought that we were the one's who put a dog on the streets that we wanted to adopt which we didn't throw the dog on the streets and they wont accept are application because of that. Please don't go here to adopt!
The house where the cats roam was wonderful. The people there were very helpful
My wife and I have been trying to adopt a puppy and no one will call back like they state and when we finally get through to them no one has answers.
Waste of time coming here. I recommend calling first. They told us we couldn't adopt that day, and that we had to look through a book and then apply to adopt. We live an hour away. We ended up going to APA and had a MUCH better experience. Not to mention they were VERY rude.
I admire any Recue Shelter for their cause. Saving Animals.
The people there are great, and the animals receive fantastic care. I recommend Five Acres to anyone thinking about getting a dog or cat!
Great dogs great people, just an awesome place all around.
I took the kids on a rainy Sunday. I was looking for a way to do something educational and volunteering. The staff was very informative. The children asked questions about the dogs. Where they came from, how they were named, how long the had been there? The staff member toon time to answer every question. They even let the kids pick out a dog to play with. We headed over to the cat house. The staff informed the kids about any special needs and why. We all had a good time and I think the animals did too!
I visited Five Acres Animal Shelter a couple of days ago looking for a new dog. A young man by the name of Ben showed me around and I couldn t been more happy. The way ben talk about the dogs, you could tell he knew something about every dog in there without even looking at their information. He was so positive and I could tell he really care for each dog there. He put me in a room and I meant so many cute doggies and ben did a great job telling me about all them. You could tell the dogs really love ben too. Every cage was very clean, you can tell the staff here really care about making sure the animals are doing great while at five acres. I would definitely stop by if your looking for a new pet!
Wonderful no-kill animal shelter in Saint Louis, MO. They've got a fabulous facility and they'll do their best to find a match for you; selection changes frequently, check back often.
What a great place! Looks like they take reallly good care of the animals and the new cat house is nicer than my house!
Awesome place dogs treated well and they were nice to the humans too!
Great shelter. We are so happy to have adopted Finley (I forgot the name he had there). The staff was great and the process was smooth. We actually went in to adopt his brother but he was already adopted. But they contacted us when the newly acquired Finley also.
Dr Lang is AWESOME! He was so kind and patient with my dog and 2 cats.
Just adopted a dog named Zoey yesterday. Had the best experience with the process.
*I wish I could remember the lady who helped us* but everything was so well put together and I'm very thankful to have found a dog.
They really do care about your pets no matter what your income is. Everyone is so helpful and nice. They are wonderful and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend FIVE ACRES ANIMAL PLACE!! CHECK THEM OUT IM SURE YOU'LL AGREE.
They tell me they don't take strays!!! What kind of place is this? How can they even say they are a no kill shelter when they don't accept strays???? Very disappointed in this place! Should be a big fat 0 for this place.
They are very friendly ppl, who care deeply about the care of you pet(s). Make you feel welcome, go out of their way to help in anyway they can.
An amazing place to adopt from. The cats are free to roam about, play and display their personalities. That makes it easy for you to find the one you like and keeps them free, playful and happy till they find their forever home.
I only saw the kitty cottage but it was amazing! We adopted a cat but you can also just go in and look around and pet the cats!! My daughter had a blast going room to room meeting all the cats! They are doing wonderful work there so if you are just going to hang out for a little and you have the ability there is a place for donations when you leave to support the shelter!
Website says it take all animals at all times. Took a stray momma cat who just had kittens up to them and was refused. Gave us a sheet of paper with list of others to try but most are over river into St. Louis which with my limited driving ability can't drive to. So they suggested regular dog pound which is a kill shelter. So giving it a day as many are closed and I will see who I can contact to take momma and babies. Wish I could but I have still last 9 of her babies besides my own 4 cats.
We went there to adopt a dog and put in an application. We were told 48 hours. We called and no answer. We called two days later and no answer. Another two days and still no one had an answer if we got the dog. Meanwhile, we noticed that the dog was not on the website any longer. After 10 days we called again and they had confirmed that the dog was no longer there. I left a message with the "big" boss and within 10 minutes we finally got a call back telling us that it was denied because we had another dog that was not spayed and it was there policy not to let anyone have an animal in the same house with one that was not fixed. WHY wasn't this explained during the application process? Every person there was unprofessional to us and should have known policy prior to us filling out an application and then waiting 10 days just to be told no and that we are not their type of people because we had a dog that was not spayed. Our dog in question was also abandoned and we were in the process of getting her fixed. This was explained at the time we filled out our application.
This place is sparkling clean and they are so kind to their shelter pets.
They do a really great job and take care of their animals. A couple years ago I adopted a pup from here and spent over 200 dollars in adoption fees. Unfortunately, the pup didn't along with my roommates dog so I had to bring her back. (With in the same week). The basically told me I was SOL on the 200 dollars in adoption fees and that it was non refundable. I found this to be unprofessional.
I'm all for their purpose. But 90% of the people that interact with visitors are rude and act like they are doing you a hugh favor. Next time I consider adoption I'll visit my neighborhood humane society.
They seem lovely to your face, but the application process is a nightmare. Don t even mention wanting to get a cat declawed because YOU WILL NOT GET IT.
Gorgeous animal shelter, with separate buildings for dogs and cats. The cat building is incredibly well appointed for cats and kittens. The dog building is loud and kennel - like, but still nice accommodations for the animals.
I've been here multiple times to donate. Staff were always kind to us, and we got our family cat here. He is great and sweet, but when we first got him he had a bladder problem that we didn't know about. It caused him to pee randomly and we almost had to give him up. Also the kitten area (At the time of our adoption) could have been a little cleaner, but it was okay. In my opinion the adoption process didn't take long, and the two kitten policy is pretty good and fair. I really like this place, and if I can I will adopt again!
Don't bother going here. Total waste of time, these people are like scammers. They allow you to fill an application, but they never bothered to call you back. The volunteer workers are mean, the main staff is just for show. This aniaml shelter is fake. I feel bad for the aniamls there, since they won't allow anyone to adopt even if they have the love & care for that pet.
It's better just to buy from an breeder, since these people like messing with your feelings. This is why so many people don't adopted cause these people are curl.
I wish I could give them no stars I rate them zero %
Friendly staff who really care about what they do. Two years ago, we found a beautiful lab mix who became part of our hearts and our family. I absolutely love Five Acres.
I recently adopted one of the FIV+ kitties. The feline coordinator quickly processed my application, and I took Roman home for foster-to-adopt just two days after I applied. He is a healthy, active, and loving young boy; it is evident that the volunteers and staff take excellent care of all the cats. I would adopt another pet from Five Acres in a heartbeat.
Everyone was warm and inviting and willing to help. If you are looking for a place to adopt a pet, this is the place to go. I absolutely love it!
This place is amazing. The kennels are cleaned and sanitized daily. The staff really puts their hearts and souls in taking care of all the animals here. Cannot wait until I rescued another fur baby.
I am only giving a 1 star for the cat section the dog section workers were outstanding! But the head women in the cat building was upright rude, she gave me and my family nasty looks from the second we walked in since we had my 3 year old son, (he was not loud. Or anything) and when asked if he lived in the home with my friend who was trying to adopt she rolled her eyes and said "are you sure about that" left and right rude looks, and rude tone, and terribly unprofessional.
But the worked in the dog building were absolutely amazing, So helpful and kind, could ask for a better experience with that side.
Went to look at an older dog and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. They let me see her and spend time with her. I was able to take her home that day, and I'm so happy with her.
Love love LOVE this place, very clean and the cats are taking wonderful care of.
Five Acres took in my cat Minx that was FeLV+ and she will get to roam free in the upstairs part of their Kitty Cottage! Thank you for everything!
The best shelter ever! Miss taking my daughter to volunteer. Absolutely loved playing with the kitties!!
I have adopted two dogs from here. They are careful and make sure there is a good fit. Even had a meet and greet with the dogs before adoption of the second.
You want a friend that won't judge you and love you no matter what? Come here and take your new buddy home. Lots of great pups are waiting for you. (They also have cats).
Do NOT even bother with this place! Horrible!
Applied for a dog, they told me I was the first person to put an application and meet her. Was trying to set up a meet and greet with my other dog and they said I needed to wait for my application to be processed and approved. (Let alone they have already contacted my references and the vet check was up to date. Also a lady that was adopting a sister of the dog put in an application the same time I did and she was taking the dog home the first day). I called daily to check on the dog and they kept telling me my application was still processing but dog was still there. Called after my applications was over a week old and asked again for status of the application, they said still processing because July 4th holiday call back after. I asked if dog was even still there and she came back and let me know the dog left the first day she was there. (Same day I met the dog) Waste of time!
They take such great care of their sweet creatures. They are so wonderful, caring and considerate, their passion and dedication has helped so many homes and healed so many hearts.
Great shelter that supports the disabled population. They have a lot of people who volunteer with them!
Adopted a cat two months ago and it was a great experience! The adoption fees are well worth the price for the well being of the cats! They are happy, free roaming, and well taken care for with limited time in a cage.
A bunch of mean hearted snobby individuals who are very unorganized and unapologetic. They make the process extremely hard just for a person to see a dog before filling out paperwork. That s very backwards. The location on Randolph is horrible. Hannah, Becky and the manager are all HEARTLESS. Don t waste your time fooling with them as I did today!!! I suggest you work with another shelter or find a private breeder or else you ll experience unworthy ppl who don t care! Their location on Pralle are NO BETTER!!! They had my son and I sit outside on the bench in 91 degree weather to be of ABSOLUTELY NO HELP. I m heartbroken bc they didn t help me find a loving dog we were trying to get that we seen at the Randolph location months ago. I was in tears and they showed no regard.
A beautiful place, very clean and well kept up. However, the staff didn't make me feel welcomed at all. I went in to check out the facility and to see about volunteering, and when I went back to look I had to be escorted, and I didn't get to see any dogs individually. The staff member just told me their names and kept walking. I had to leave when she was ready, not when I was ready. I wanted to stay and interact with some of them, but I wasn't offered to and it didn't seem like it was something I could ask about. I felt like it was a bother to the staff for me to be in there. I didn't go to see the cats, I was too upset to stay.
I wasn't looking to adopt, but I did come to see what kind of place this was, and I'm honestly not impressed with their customer service at all.
To make a long story short; great, clean place - bad customer service. I'll stick to volunteering at the Saint Louis County Animal Control, they have much better policies and I always feel welcomed there and able to move around as I please.
Very friendly staff and a good selection of cars and kittens! Haven't checked out the dog side yet. Ended up adopting two kittens for my daughters!
My fav shelter.the doggies and kitties are pampered here and the staff makes sure they all get the best home possible.
I wish I had read all of these reviews about this place before I went there. I saw that it had fairly good rating but did not take time to read the details about the customer service and bad attitudes people who work there have... There were two young ladies one night that were very nice to us but we hadn't turned in an adoption form. But, on our second visit we talked to another lady who was very rude and didn't care that she made 11 year old daughter cry or not. Read up on their policies before you try to adopt or get your heart set on an animal. Adoption process is a nightmare. It's almost like they look for any reason to say no. We had our hearts set on one of two kittens and they are just down right rude. We are good people who treat animals with love and they are part of our family. We will be looking elsewhere for a kitten/cat. What a horrible experience.
Terrible place, the way I was treated is the reason places like Petland are in business
We enter the dog building and wait for a person to show us around. When the person who gives you a tour tries to talk, you ant even hear them. We specifically said we want a small dog and we can't have a big dog. there was only one small dog but he showed us the other dogs who were all big. we said we wanted to play with the little dog, but right as we were walking towards it, someone else pulled it out to play. instead of letting us wait to play with the dog after the people before us, they practically pushed us out the door. Not a good way to run a shelter.
No kill shelter clean and small store for collars leashes and treats ECT
We have adopted two dogs from Five Acres. They are a tremendous organization that takes in a number of rescue animals from around the country. They are also a no-kill shelter.
Super friendly, super clean and all animals very well taken care of. Kudos to the staff who care deeply and are genuinely invested in each and every animal.. looking forward to our next visit
This place is a stuck up place that refuses to let you adopt a cat just because of believes are different. Not going back to this place ever agaib!!!!!!
The staff is very caring , friendly. They are knowledgeable and take a great interest in the animals. Thank You
Go elsewhere!! Save yourself some time. After speaking with several people and reading reviews, I was unsure of coming here, but I ve always thought you have to give it a try before you ll ever know for yourself. Well take my advice and listen to all reviews stating they don t return calls, they don t know how to approach people and are shady!! I m in a very unfortunate situation with my cat and after trying to contact them several times, on numerous different occasions with no response. I reached out to the director, who was very nice and got me into touch with someone right away! But only to be told they won t take my pet because they opened yesterday and are now full??? I ve been trying for weeks!! Zero compassion! Very short! It really is sad that people look to these places in a true time of need and they are shunned away.. or are denied an adoption application based on a piece of paper. This place seriously lacks communication and empathy.. which I find both important when dealing with animals and people.
We adopted a dog from Five Acres just over one week ago. It was a beautiful 2 year old Great Pyrenees. The staff did warn us that the dog had originally been given up due to nipping the hand of a child. That being said, my wife and 11 year old son fell in love with he dog and we adopted him. When he was brought home he immediately took to everyone and was incredibly well behaved. After a couple days we noticed that if he managed to get something we didn t want him to have he would growl if we tried to take it away. Eventually he would drop it with enough coaxing. Once he did snap at me but it seemed like something that could be trained out of him. Unfortunately we never got that chance.
Three days ago the dog grabbed something from our trash can. My wife repeatedly told him drop it and he eventually did. I was standing about three feet away from the dog. After he dropped the piece of trash he started growling. I backed away and at that point he lunged at me and jumped on me. This is a 100 pound dog that has his paws on my shoulders and biting my back and side. I got loose and went to the other end of our living room. The dog then came at me again but my wife was able to calm him down and get him on his leash. I have deep puncture wounds and scratches on my back and side from the attack. That day we brought the dog back to Five Acres and they did nothing but make my wife feel guilty for returning the dog. She explained that this was not something we wanted to do but we could not trust that the dog wouldn t do that again. We have an 11 year old and that same attack would have been face level for him. We felt terrible for the dog and were still wanting to adopt another one but we were told that they will not adopt to people that surrender a dog. And to add insult to injury we had to pay them to take the dog back. We did everything we though appropriate with the care of this dog. He was walked multiple times per day, was played with, we did not yell and used positive reinforcement with his training.
I have come to believe that the people at Five Acres weren t exactly 100% forthcoming about the aggressivenesss of the dog. We believe that the dog had been abused previously. He was extremely afraid of stairs and would not walk up a staircase. He did not react the same way towards me as he did my wife. I think that he suffered abuse by a male before he was initially given away. Unfortunately the people my wife spoke to when she returned the dog were not interested in hearing anything about the circumstances of the return. They treated my wife poorly and made her feel guilty for what happened. We were just as concerned about the welfare of the dog as we were about my injuries. I did not get them treated because I didn t want to have the dog taken by animal control. I wanted to bring it back to Five Acres. We didn t ask for our money back, all we wanted was to get a different dog.
The shame of it all is that the dog is beautiful, smart and more often than not, very friendly. I hope that they are able to work with him to help with whatever problem is causing his aggression. No one can guarantee the behavior of an animal. But that mindset has to be shared by everyone. We were treated as though this was our fault and there was no possible way the dog could have attacked me without being provoked.
I could not in good conscience adopt another dog from Five Acres. Not only did they not seem to care about the situation, they did not seem overly concerned about the dog either. We understand that these things happen but based on this experience and how they reacted I just would not trust them.
We got our puppy Sonny from five acres about a year and half ago, they really care about where their animals are going! Great staff!! Thank you for giving us one of the best dogs we have had!!
We adopted Shadow in September and he's the best pup ever! Five acres does a great job caring for the animals. We can tell he was loved while there and they kept him with his brother, Chance and sister, Sassy until they were adopted so he adapted quickly to our other dogs. He plays well with our other dog and they snuggle while they sleep. It's adorable. He's full of love:)
We adopted our dog here. Great experience! We went a total of 3 times to meet some of the animals and find the right pup for us. We ended up adopting a 5 month old lab mix, and we would recommend this place to everyone. Friendly and helpful staff. Very smooth adoption process. They were very generous with treats/collar/leash to get us started on our first pet. Clean place and dogs are treated very well. Highly recommend this NO KILL shelter!!
Wasted our time on multiple occasions. Showed us dogs that weren't available. The lack of communication and organization at this facility amazes me. Will not be back.
My girlfriend and I were looking to adopt a cat from here and religiously came in every weekend looking for our new little sibling for our current cat. When the feline manager asked if our current cat was declawed we said yes. She then stated that we were not fit to get a cat and wouldn t let us adopt before even asking if we were planning on declawing the new family member. Instead of explaining that we were undecided on the matter we decided to look elsewhere. She was very rude about the matter and did not seem very pleasant from the minute we walked in!.. might be better practice to make the interview more of a conversation and educate people on the facts... it s sad some of these cats will never find a home because of people like this..
Its great it a no kill shelter and the animals are well treated
We adopted two kitties last week. Dana and the helpers were WONDERFUL! They answered our questions about the kittens whom we were interested in adopting. The application process was thorough but prompt. We LOVE our new furry family members -- formally known as Chocolate Chip and Guacamole. They came home with us and act as if they have been there forever! We are are SO PLEASED to have found and adopted them. THANK YOU DANA and STAFF! We will certainly recommend Five Acres to families and friends!
Very caring staff and extremely well cared for animals. We have been adopted by a dog and a cat from 5 Acres. Very easy, but thorough, adoption process with reasonable cost.
This is a great place ! I adopted my dog from here. The staff is fabulous !
Do not go here!!! I had already adopted a dog from another group and wanted to get a friend for her. Went to this shelter and met a dog and started the application process, which included answering questions to a questionnaire filled out by one of their employees but not showed to me to verify the information was correct. When I FINALLY received a call back I was told I was denied because I gave false information regarding the vet for the dog I had previously adopted which was a BOLD FACE LIE and VERY insulting to me! End result was that the information was written down incomplete by their employee and instead of calling me to clarify (WHY IN WOULD I GIVE FALSE INFORMATION THAT WAS GOING TO BE VERIFIED?!) they gave the dog to someone else. I will never return to this facility and suggest going to one of the other shelters in our area.
Very clean environment for animals but customer service isn't great. Process to meet dogs for potential future pets is very awkward. Also the application time is excessive. I don't know that I'd go back.
The only thing good about this Shelter is it is a no kill shelter. Unfortunately those running it have zero problem wasting the time & money of those seeking to adopt! We came all the way from Gray Summit to meet a dog we were interested in giving a forever home to & then to the Foster home to spend a bit more time with her. The Foster parents were wonderful! We wasted our time filling out an adoption app when all the while the Shelter volunteers KNEW someone else had already met the dog & started the adoption process! We will not be returning to 5 acres again! At least at the Humane Society they have enough common courtesy to inform potential adopters that others are ahead of you in the process! The way we were dealt with was deceitful!!
My husband and I have visited here several times to see if there are any dogs that we feel drawn to adopt. The kennels have always been in pristine conditions and I love the outdoor facilities as well. On one visit we were interested in one little pit girl and wanted to fill out an application. We filled out the paperwork and I enjoyed my experience with our handler who said that she really liked us and would put in a good word for us. However when we were at the front desk to drop off the paper work and discuss further steps of coming back and bringing our current dog for a meet and greet, the older receptionist looked down her nose and said, "You'll only becoming back here *if* you even pass the application process." This comment came out very rudely and I was shocked at her tone towards me. Maybe she was having a bad day, but when you work at an animal shelter and someone is interested in adopting a pet from you, I would think that you would be just a *little* more courteous????? We did come back for the meet and greet which ended with the dogs not getting along as well as we'd hoped. While we were there one of the handlers dropped a comment about my dog's appearance. She's a long haired rough collie, and I admit she was a bit mussy, but as anyone with a long haired dog will tell you, that's just part of their charm. ;) However I felt that because my dog was not decked out to the nines she doubted my ability to take care of any animal. My husband and I were very disappointed in their treatment of us, and we hope that the staff becomes more welcoming to potential adopters, as we would still love to adopt from this shelter in the future!
Horiable experience. I ve been denied twice. Once because I wouldn t adopt 2 cats at a time and another because I said I was unsure on declawing. 2 cats that could of had a wonderful home! I m sad to think of how many animals go to bad homes because of their policies. The cat I adopted a year ago from the human society did wonderful being the only cat in the home. I ve never, in my life, heard of this. They tell you they base their policies on a book they have read from a cat expert. That s like saying, let s read a book on how to parent and your child will thrive and have a better life because so and so said so. I can t imagine how many cats have been mistreated, given away, or let go because people adopted 2 cats at a time when they only wanted 1! I wouldn t say don t adopt from 5 acres but, I wouldn t go in there expecting to walk out with a animal you fall in love with.
Got my sweet Coco-Paco-Taco there! This is a wonderful place!
We tried a couple timea to come here. Both were bad experiences. Today we looked through their book nothing for us.
Then they said they had a dog for us to see not in the book. And hes free to adopt.
Then they went to get him. We waited. Then came back and said hes sick.
Then they said he was adopted. Big waste of time
We had such a wonderful experience at Five Acres! The facility was great and all of the staff and volunteers seemed very passionate. When we originally came for a visit, Cam took us around to see several different dogs. He obviously had a relationship with each of these dogs and was able to tell us a lot about each of them to help us find the dog that would be perfect for our family. We spent a lot of time getting to know several different dogs but Cam never made us feel rushed or pressured to make a decision. After applying and being approved for adoption we came back to pick up the newest member of our family and were even more impressed by the staff when Tim helped facilitate the introduction between our original dog and the dog we were adopting (Faye). Tim was incredibly passionate about Faye and spent the time to make sure that the dogs would get along well. Tim was obviously well-trained for such introductions and helped us become even more confident in our decision. We owe a huge thank you to Five Acres, as well as Cam and Tim for helping Faye become part of our family!
Very friendly staff, made getting our dog easy and she is fantastic! The place is clean and well keep up
I got the best dog I could ever ask for from this place
Five Acres is a great place. Cats and Dogs are treated great
Wonderful staff, clean and an all around fun visit. Can't wait to go back and adopt a new family member!
Fantastic place to go to adopt a new family member! please adopt pets don't buy them please adopt please adopt please adopt!!!!!
