I would advise against getting your bicycle repair...
I would advise against getting your bicycle repaired at this shop. I took my hybrid bicycle to Evans to have my rear wheel replaced and when I collected it all looked fine. But within ten minutes of riding it I felt something was wrong and my rear tire became punctured while I was in the middle of traffic and I had to walk my bike the rest of the way home. When I got home I phoned the shop to explain this and to say I thought the puncture was somehow connected to the recent repair job , and the person I spoke to didn't even want to listen to me and replied to me in a shouting and voice and an aggressive tone saying that riders in London are always getting punctures. I then proceeded to change the innertube and carefully inspected the inside face of the tire for any shards of glass or nails and found nothing. So I fitted a new innertube and pumped it up. Once I finished pumping it I leaned down to disconnect the pump and there was an explosion right in my ear. The innertube had exploded and my right ear started ringing very loudly.
On Saturday I rang Evans to explain what had happened, this time an explosion instead of a punctured tire, and while I wasn't shouted at, the store manager did not come across as being sympathetic and he told me there was nothing he could do other than look into what may be wrong and put it right. I asked if they way pay for an uber as it would take me 45 minutes to walk my bike to Mortimer Street and he refused.
I therefore took the bike to a different bicycyle repair shop close to home. Later, after their mechanic had looked at the bike, he rang to explain that a botch job had been done on my bike by Evans and that this constituted NEGLIGENCE. Their report is as follows
"Action:Removed tire, wheel did not have any rim strip fitted - tube has long tear from being in contact with spoke drilling holes. Noticed valve hole had been drilled out and filed flat to fit schraeder valve tube - this is a narrow (20mm external width) rim suitable for a road bike / road tire, not a 700 x 32 Schwalbe hybrid tire. Drilling valve hole has left rim weakened. On closer inspection noted they have supplied a wheel for a road bike with 130mm OLD spacing, this hybrid bike requires 135mm OLD hub, this incorrect wheel hub will pull the frame out of alignment when QR skewer is tightened, affecting chainline. Rim is too narrow for V-brake to function properly. Requires NEW wheel suitable for hybrid with wider rim and 135mm OLD hub. New inner tube and rim strip required. Advice: RC called customer, is coming back to store to speak to workshop. Customer visited workshop, explained situation, took photos showing suitable 135 mm OLD hybrid wheel fitted to dropouts, compared to road wheel supplied by Evans. Customer taking bike back to Evans Mortimer Street to speak to manager and raise concerns."
Failure 1: wrong wheel used, and resultantly the brake function has been adversely affected
Failure 2: wheel was weakened by drilling hole into it causing dangerous riding condition
Failure 3: rim tape was not fitted and as a result the innertube came into contact with the sharp spoke drilling holes and as a result punctured/exploded.
Failure 4: Unsatisfactory customer service and unprofessional and aggressive communication from staff
Now four days later I still have ringing in my right ear. I have booked an appointment with a doctor because I am concerned about damage to my ear drum.
I have taken the bicycle back to Evans and have explained what happened to them and gave them a copy of the report. I also rang Evans Head office Customer Service and I have not so much as had a call back from them, or a call from the Evans branch manager to apologise about the situation or discuss it with me.
