The Shelburne is a great hotel. It is very conveniently located, a 7 minute walk to Grand Central, less than a mile from Penn Station, near plenty of subways, etc. There is an adequate gym which is clean, and the housekeeping crew and staff are all attentive to their guests needs. My husband requested a different pillow than the standard one offered and they offered him a variety of pillows. They had a non-allergenic pillow made out of buckwheat that he wound up choosing. I was told that they also have pots, pans and hot plates should one want to cook in their room. After a long stay, this is very welcome to avoid having to eat out at restaurants all the time. In April their rooftop bar is open (which you don t need to be a hotel guest to go to...) and that is just awesome.

We stayed at the Shelburne NYC with our 3 children for 11 nights. The hotel is located in a perfect central location at 37th and Lexington. We walked to most attractions and used the subway at Grand Central for transportation to Yankees games. Closer subways for Brooklyn Bridge, 911 Memorial and Battery park are just a short walk away. The roof has great views to the Empire State Building. The staff are really friendly. The maids, the concierge, door men, bar tenders and front desk were all friendly and helpful. There is even a laundry in the basement. Lots of excellent local restaurants close by. This is a great place to stay if your visiting New York on holiday.
A posh lobby leads up to decent-sized rooms with nice interiors. You have to pay for internet in your room, but the accommodations are comfortable. Unfortunately the window in my room didn't shut all the way and it was next to a trash loading zone so I was tortured by garbage truck "beepings" all night long.
We stayed here on a Sunday night, in preparation for meetings the next day. It was difficult to unwind and even rest because of the numerous inconsistencies. I hope they will fix these issues: stained towels, downed internet (no access), and hair on the sheets. In the morning, the hair dryer began to spark. Although they were able to send another straight away, it was really the last straw. Will not return.
Amazing place, i stayd there two times, and each time i love this place more and more, its near the center of town, this is realy comfotable location because its quite quiet but you can go to Fith avenue in 3 minutes by foot, and what is best? At 17 or 18 pm (i dont remeber) they giving wine for free! There is pub also, and few restaurants near, but if hou want to eat home food no problem, because in some rooms are small kitchens, and there ia grocery shop near. As I say Yaaayk's.
Decently nice, great location. Not recommend based on the staff.
The heaters don't work in the rooms it took 3 days for them to check and tell us because of the windows the heaters aren't super effective so they gave us small space heaters for the suite - I'd expect much more, especially quality windows during winter when paying $3k per week.
The day we left they were extremely unhelpful and rude we loaded up out own car, called 3 times for ice before we left and nobody told us the car was parked out front.
Could've been a much better experience but the Shelburne staff really ruined that the last day once they got their money they stopped caring.
PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST SO YOU CAN HOPEFULLY AVOID A TERRIBLE STAY IN NYC.
Horrible experience at the Shelburne Hotel NYC. My wife called the hotel in advance to confirm whether they have cribs available as we have a 5 month old son. The hotel employee said that they do have cribs. However, once we got there (at 8pm at night with a tired jet lagged baby) they gave us an old, stained, odorous graco play pen instead. The play pen didn't have a net to place a baby higher up and instead the mat would have to be placed at the bottom where the metal peices could be felt through the mat (less than 2 inches above the dirty, dusty carpeted floor). I have three compressed vertebrae in my spine and my wife recently had a car accident (rear ended) so we have difficulty bending over very far and holding weight (our son) at the same time (which the hotel employees we spoke to were made aware of). When I spoke to the manager on duty for Friday, Sep. 14, 2018 about the play pen, the lady working there repeatedly told me it was a crib and not a play pen. It literally says play pen on it. I have pictures and video as proof. After she argued about it being a crib and tried to convince me otherwise I asked her if she had any children to which she said "no". Then I told her to google the word 'crib' and then the word ' play pen' and see what comes up. Absolutely disgusting to have to argue with her as to what an actual crib was and wasting the first several hours of our trip trying to sort out what to do for our son so he could sleep at night and nap during the day safely. She also had the audacity to say we could buy a crib from a store if we like. Really? We were visiting from Vancouver, Canada and we are going to buy a crib for 4 nights because you first lied to us about having a crib and then argued that a play pen is a crib. So needless to say that for the 4 nights we were there I had to sleep in the chair and my wife and son slept on the bed. This is the first time our son has slept on a bed and we spent most of the night terrified he would roll off or inadvertantly be smothered by the blanket when my wife moved in the middle of the night in her sleep.
They also have a pillow menu advertised on the website and have a literal pillow menu card in the room. When I called the second night to order a swedish memory foam pillow (as that is what we use at home) the gentleman at the front desk said they do not have a pillow menu anymore and that we only have regular pillows. When I spoke to the manager (Ecker) about the crib situation (which got us nowhere) I happened to mention the pillow issue to which he sounded surprised and said that they do have the pillow menu and that the pillows are available. That shows me that the employees are either not well trained and are uninformative, or lazy.
My wife suffered a cut on her heel while at the hotel and I called the front desk to ask if they have a first aid kit to which the lady said "we have bandaids". I said that's fine we'll take 2 bandaids please. The next day we wanted to clean the wound and replace the bandaid and the gentleman at the front desk told my wife they don't carry bandaids. I might be mistaken but I would assume a first aid kit may be a legal necessity for a hotel to have on hand. And again an uninformed and/or lazy front desk clerk.
This was not a 4 star hotel by any means. It was dirty, smelled of cigarette smoke and they refused to move us to a different room. We would have been better off in a dingy motel at a quarter the cost. And at the end they had the audacity to charge a $35 (+fees/taxes) per night "facility fee" that they failed to mention when we checked in. Worst "hotel" I have had the misfortune to be stuck in.
For my mother's first trip to NYC, we wanted to do it up right so we booked a room with a view at the Affinia Shelburne in the heart of Midtown Manhattan.
We got an email the afternoon before asking what time we would be arriving at the hotel. I checked the box in the app for 3 p.m. Unfortunately when we arrived our at 4 p.m. our room wasn't ready. We had a drink in the restaurant, Rare, then popped back to the lobby at 5 p.m. for the free wine happy hour (a great perk).
Come 5:45 p.m. our room still wasn't ready, so hotel management pulled a clutch move. We had booked a room with two queen beds on the 9th floor with a view. He upgraded us to 2 rooms each with a king bed on the 4th floor. From what I can tell by the other reviews this seems to be a common issue with guests. What do y'all need to do? Hire more housekeepers?
So our king room was nice. The bed was comfy. I had to request more pillows. I've never been to a hotel where they only put 3 pillows on the king size bed. Also, the door handle kept popping off the bathroom door! My sister was in the room next door and could hear the metal when it hit the tile floor.
The hotel has a very trendy vibe. It's a bummer the rooftop bar is closed during the winter but we were able to go up and enjoy the view of the Midtown skyline, especially the Empire State Building.
Honestly the biggest perk of this hotel is the location. It's within walking distance of the Empire State Building and 5th avenue. If traffic is nasty, you can walk all the way to Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Music Hall and Central Park.
Great place to stay in Manhattan, especially if you want a convience apartment: microwave, coffee pot and more. Gym downstairs. Great lobby to sit watch cable, use Wi-Fi or people wstch.
Right in the middle of Manhattan very good situated and 5 min to walk to Central Station. Staff was nice and helpful. Rooms are a bit old but really ok and very clean. I can only recommend this hotel.
Could smell mildew the second I walked in. Vanity mirror was half hanging off the wall. Shower is weird with a half door that leaves the floor and mat soaking wet. Wouldn't have stayed but company was paying. Not worth it, plenty of other better places in Murray Hill.
Hotel very vestuste and unpleasant staff even very haughty. I really do not understand these 4 stars. Even though my stay was partly spoiled fortunately that New York is a beautiful city.
Clean and simple. Poorly designed bathroom. Within walking distance of many activities, but just a bit father than many other hotels. Didn't like that no air conditioning was available unless outside temperature was over 65, especially during allergy season. The 3rd star of my rating was for the free wine in the lobby between 5 and 6 p.m.
Had 2 rooms. Both were 2 bedroom suites. Rooms were roomy & clean... especially for New York City. Location was an easy walk or drive to Times Square. We used Lyft the most. They were usually cheaper than the cabs & Uber. We ordered breakfast from the restaurant which was delicious. Also, ate lunch there too. We all thought the burgers were delicious. The front desk, doormen, & the maids were very nice. I wouldn t change anything. Just an amazing stay.
Superb location with easy access to bus and the subway. Clean and spacious rooms with free tea and coffee. Located near restaurants and grocery stores which makes it convenient and hassle-free. The in-house restaurant 'Rare' serves up a mighty fine burger. Highly recommended hotel!
Room is clean and well-kept. Staff is courteous and the wine hour is really nice. Location is fairly convenient with subway access about 3-4 blocks away.
My one complaint that prevents me from giving it full marks was the fact we were continuously battling with a bad breaker in our room. It would get tripped in the middle of the night and I would have to reset it. I brought this up at least 3 times to the staff and the problem wasn't resolved. Also the AC unit kept dripping condensation on the carpet which made it somewhat unpleasant to walk in the room barefooted. Also brought this up to the staff, they put a fan in the room to dry it one day but the root problem was not fixed and it was wet again.
Clean and Quiet! The beds were perfect for this exhausted traveler. We decided to ride the hotel bikes around the city. Really close to Time Square. Great stay!
9-16-17 I love staying here beautiful place with beautiful people have never had a bad experience they're always so pleasant
Update: 9-11-19 I still love the hotel, but I'm beginning to have bad experiences now. And this all over the Phone, I haven't even begin my stay, The service, policies, and conduct have changed and not for the better. I went from felling like family, to them not even knowing me
Upon check-in I was forced to pay some sort of service fee that entitled me to water, snacks, soft drinks, or wine in the lobby for an hour or so. We do not drink alcohol. The water was 10.00 a bottle. Yes, $10.00 a bottle. The first room we were checked into was dirty. Stains on the carpet and lamp shade. Dirty windows. Furniture was really beat up and chipped. We found small bottle of Dasani water and eye drops under the bed sham. The shower drain actually looked nasty. Mold maybe? I am not sure. Ugly stains on the carpet. The hotel staff were very polite and accomadating and moved us to another room. It was not much of an improvement. The furniture was really worn and chipped. The windows were filty covered with dust/dirt. I am not petty or a knit picker. However I do expect cleanliness and decent furniture. I realize it is a hotel and hundreds of people pass thru the rooms, but we were moved to another room that was not much better. Nearly the same issues but the bathroom was clean. I would have prefered returning my money and finding a clean hotel. It seems this hotel was on the wave of "new boutique hotels" but was never maintained. Even the lobby funiture was showing wear and tear. This was my birthday present to myself. Needless to say it was ruined by this stay. .
The most horrible hotel i every stayed at in NYC. Rooms are super dirty i found a water bug in my room. i found a chicken bone behind the tv stand. hotel has no security any one can do anything and no one will know. front desk is never rude.
It s not getting 1 star because the bed and TV are okay. Pillows smell, bathroom has a tub but no one cleaned it during our 5 night stay. The worst thing I ve ever experienced was the door. You can hear everything in the hallway. Staff started working very early and they slam the door super hard. I can t get a good sleep at all. Won t come back to this hotel. Don t be fooled by the 4-star hotel rating.
Nice room that looked to be newly renovated, poor guest service/housekeeping. It took an hour, a follow up call, and me going to the front desk in my pajamas just to get a extra pillow (queen bed only has 2 pillows).
I have been staying at the Affinia Shelburne for almost 10 years. My last stay was 12/21-12/26/16. My wife and I love the location - the neighborhood is away from major tourist areas and more quiet with great restaurants nearby. The staff have always been pleasant and helpful, which was the case at our last stay. Some staff members remembered us and it was like being welcomed home. The only con for us, which may send us looking for another place to stay in the neighborhood is the new facilities fee of $25/day. This fee supposedly covers wifi in the room, the "free" wine hour from 5-6 PM daily, and a daily $10 allowance at "the Cupboard" the lobby snack shop. We do not care about or need wifi in our room, and if we needed wifi access we were happy to go to the lobby. We were rarely in the hotel between 5-6 so rarely took advantage of the "free" wine. Finally, we tried to remember to use our $10/day from the Cupboard since we were paying for it anyway. It was difficult to assemble items that added to just $10 and we didn't always remember to get something. We still have an unopened jar of nuts because most of what was available were snacks that we do not eat or do not care about. If the management wants to charge another $25/ night then be honest about it and just raise the room rate. We felt like we were being nickel and dimed and weren't happy about it. It's not in keeping with the atmosphere we've been used to at the Affinia for the past 10 years. We'll be looking for other hotels in the neighborhood.
Room was nice. Roof top bar was a great experience. Beautiful view of the Empire state building. The service was the highlight. The concierges were exceptional. And valet service was quick despite the traffic and street festival. Would highly recommend for the service and location.
Love this hotel! Great value for what you're paying.
Location: perfect. Very central- couple of minutes walk from the Grand Central station (which also has Shake Shack!). Everywhere you'll go within close proximity to the hotel, you'll be able to spot either the Empire State building or the Chrysler building which is always great.
Room: Great size, amazing smart TV and a beautiful bathroom! Super comfy bed were also a plus - although they didnt have any ice machine, which I thought was a little strange
Rooftop: a plus plus! They have a cute little rooftop that offers an amazing view of the Empire State building!
Cons: No internet in the room (which I think is a pretty basic offering by most hotels these days.. time to catch up!). Also our cable wasnt working which really sucked as we were hoping to catch some Rio Olympics during our downtime.
Overall, it's a pretty great place to stay when you're in Manhattan!
My family and I had an amazing time here. The rooms were clean and comfortable. It was also a great price for where it was located. I will say that concierge was slow in responding to requests. I had to call 3 times to get extra pillows (They have a pillow menu!) They also didn't have our room ready so we had to wait 30-45 minutes from them to clean it. They did their best to correct it so it seems more like they're understaffed. Great hotel. Great customer service. Great chance of me coming back.
This hotel has the opportunity for great charm, being set in a great location and with fantastic roof top views. However our stay was let down by some poor service, particularly with the towels & linen. Only on our last night of 7 were we given a full set of towels, and on one day the room wasn't even cleaned!
