Fantastic dining experience. All of the food was fresh, amazing, and unique in their individual ways. Was stunned by the use of Indian elements in traditionally American dishes and vise versa. Was not entirely thrilled about the ambience and feel that it could be improved.

Great service. Good location near union square. Room was a good size. We were happy with our time at Taj Campton. Especially enjoyed room service which had attention to detail.
Amazing Michelin star, non-pretentious experience! Great options for vegetarians. Interesting flavors, excellent presentation and yummy food! We came here once to celebrate our pregnancy and again to celebrate our healthy baby :) both times for lunch, which unfortunately, is not offered anymore!
I've now stayed here three times. The rooms are lovely, well-appointed, and comfortable, not to mention pristine and well-kept. And the service is always super friendly. Having stayed in other, more expensive SF hotels, I'm now convinced the Taj is the best choice!
An absolute disappoinment. Stay always with well known brands as you can not find a institutional approach once there is a problem. The personel do not pay attention to noise on the floors, you may be woken up at 6 am with bagage pick up next door. I had one incident with a door man named Tom, where I asked them to call the garage for the car get ready. His answer was " yoy dont use our vallet service, we can not call". A 400 usd per room, I am paying 5 nights, 2 rooms, and not even a phone call, because I chose not to use the vallet.
On another note, rooms are old, bathrooms are old, upholstery are old. Dont get mislead with pictures and lobby, which is 6 seats in total, all other are old.
For the price, I would stay elsewhere. First the good: the staff was exceptional. From remembering your name to overall friendliness and helpfulness, everyone we interacted with was wonderful. The food was incredible- we ate at the non-Michelin starred section and were blown away. Both chicken and fish curries were outstanding. However, even with these factors, we left disappointed. For a 5-Star hotel at that price, it just didn't 'feel' nice. Even with an upgrade via Amex FHR to a deluxe room it still felt *just* a bit a nicer than a Double Tree. The room and bathroom were a bit awkward without outlets were you would expect (both bedside outlets being fully used by lights/in-room phones, so no phone charging), and a much smaller TV (without some usual channels- sorry Fixer Upper fans, no HGTV) fairly far from the bed than other "lesser" hotels. I was also surprised by no in-room complimentary coffee. Only one free espresso per day. Last, but not least inconvenient, is that some rooms (ours included) require a half flight of stairs after you take the elevator. We were on a fairly long trip so were not light on bags and after getting off at the 6th floor needed to carry our bags up another half flight of stairs to get to our room. All in all, it was nice- but save the staff and people, not nicer than a much cheaper stay elsewhere.
The Hotel is centrally located in downtown San Francisco, and the hotel staff warmly greeted its guests upon entry. The room I was in was pretty big, and even though it's right next to the elevator, I could barely hear any noises from outside of my room - I was very impressed. The overall experience for staying at this hotel was above my expectations, and I highly recommend it.
Great location and excellent restaurant Excellent stay in the most convenient location in town close to all the shopping and Chinatown. Great welcome from the bell staff to the concierge and the reception. Fast and efficient check in. Suite well appointed with a large sitting area, a good size bedroom and a wheelchair friendly bathroom. Do try their restaurant where we had an amazing brunch of Indian fusion.
Very small and chic hotel in the heart of San Francisco. Rooms were clean and the food is very good. Of course you have to pay his price here. Especially nice we found the bar. Martini in the evening with live music. Rooms in the upper floor have a great view over the whole city.
I booked this hotel through a 3rd party and so stayed at a significantly reduced rate compared to their posted rates. It is incomprehensible to me that anyone would pay $700 (as posted) for this hotel. When I arrived, the gentleman at the desk was the only indication that this is supposed to be a nice hotel; the service he provided was excellent.
However, once I got to my room, I can only assume that they give their worst rooms to those who book at a discount via a third party. I was on the lowest floor, with their conferences rooms. Once when I got off the elevator, I ran into a staff member who seemed shocked I had gotten off on that floor. I understand that they wouldn't give me their nicest room as I didn't pay full price, but on the other hand, my first experience staying here virtually assures that I will never stay here again; if they cared about repeat customers, I would think they would care about how they treat guests on their first stay.
As far as the service at the front desk, checking in was the only time it was superior. I asked them to send a 2 page fax for me and was surprised on checkout that I was charged $6 for the privilege. First, for a $700 per night hotel, why are you nickel and diming me? Second, if they had told me they were charging $3 per page, I probably would've gone to a copy store and done it myself.
In addition, ever since checkout, the hotel has emailed me daily (until I unsubscribed obviously) - what hotel does this? I think one email to follow up on the stay ideal, but multiple? why? More bizarrely, they also sent me multiple emails addressed to other people. Has a malfunctioning robot taken control of their servers lol? Unclear, but so weird.
In summary, I don't know why anyone would stay here. It is expensive but unclear why; thus it feels like a very poor value. SF has plenty of hotels in the same price range but with far superior service and facilities.
Wonderful location and excellent hotel. I was particularly impressed with the customer service as a whole. There are not many hotels with this level of service. Didn t get to try the restaurant, but it looks amazing as well. Would love to try it next time.
Loved the clean rooms, beds are quite comfortable, parking is available. And last but not the least staffs are friendly. So overall experience was great.
Perfectly centered for shopping and tourism activities. Rooms are spacious and clean, with special touches. The staff are what differentiates this boutique hotel from other lovely hotels in the area.
Dillon, the head bartender, is totally worth a trip here. The menu is solid but the drinks are better. I also had the pleasure of staying here as well. Well worth every penny spent
Service, food, and accommodations are all top notch here at Taj Campton Place. I can't walk through the lobby without at least one greeting and a smile. It's a wonderful atmosphere.
Nice hotel and good room sizes. Very friendly staff. They showed us a room on higher floor and were very happy for us to have a look first. Very nice food at the bistro as main Michelin star restaurant was full. Bistro food was outstanding washed with lovely house wine an d great service. Lovely spread on breakfast as well. In mornings they have a coffee station with muffins. Nice touch.
Great place. Though they close too early. So, we went to Wayfair Tavern, which was near by and a better choice for an American, Continental dinning experiance.
Amazing and very creative food, on a very upscale setting. The service was impeccable, the presentation was great, the drinks and wines were also amazing. Highly recommend this place for a memorable dinner experience!
My first dinner at a Michelin 2 star Indian restaurant. I chose the vegetarian option and all the 7 courses were brilliant. The choices of sauce and spices brought a new perspective to fine fusion Indian food.
I had a set menu here for New Years Eve last night, and *every* single bite was amazing! The food was artfully presented, flawlessly seasoned, perfectly textured, and so on. Basically mini works of art. And I think this was agreed by everyone in my group, based on all the "ooooh!" and "amazing!" overheard.
(Actually, one small exception: The bread was cold, unremarkable, and just meh in taste and texture.)
I was, however, a bit surprised and disappointed that the service did not quite match the amazing quality of the food. For instance, several times a waiter brought a meat dish to one of the vegetarian members of our party. One time would have been an understandable mistake, but doing this repeatedly? And I can't imagine any vegetarian likes having blood-red meat placed in front of them :(. Additionally, having experienced the incredible efficiency at Manresa (where all plates were placed down on the table within a split second of each other!), I was a bit underwhelmed with the service here.
Also, the fact that a 20% service charge (vs. 18%) was added to an already (IMHO) very, very expensive bill was an additional bit of annoyance.
And, indeed, a bit re the price: While I've not factored this in to my rating, I do want to note that the cost of my meal came to just over $300 after tax and tip (including one included glass of champagne). I realize that I was eating at a renowned Michelin two-star restaurant AND on New Years Eve, and yet this strikes me as a bit... excessive, to be frank.
Dinner at Compton place was excellent though ambiance was interesting. It almost felt like a separate part of the bar, with the restroom in the hotel lobby.
I am compelled to tell everyone who reads this review that David at the bar creates the best Ramos Gin Fizz ever! David is a great mixologist and is fun to chat with, I wish I were rich enough (like filthy rich) to employ him as my own personal bartender but in this lifetime I am happy enough to visit him whenever I can.
The dining room and bar is an elegant experience, I'm glad to live in San Francisco!
The Tj Compton is a beautiful boutique hotel that has a high quality well trained staff. From your entrance into the hotel to your departure, you will be well take are of. The dining room and bar areas are small and intimate. The food is excellent - gourmet with a twinge of Indian seasonings.
We had a beautiful time and the service was excellent especially Manny Melendez of the front desk who made us feel special when we informed him we just had done our marriage civil ceremony at City Hall.
Unfortunately my experience with the Taj Campton Place is not a good one; However, this review pertains to the management, not the hotel itself.
I understand that some policies hold strong, but when a customer is trying everything in their power to come to some sort of middle agreement, I don t see how a special gesture or exception can t be made.
I don t believe that the customer is always right, but I do believe in compromise and this hotel s management is certainly out of touch with that part of their customer service.
We had a wonderful meal here! The dishes were each plated so elegantly and had lovely connections to unique aspects of San Francisco. The picnic in the park was by far the best presentation.
We made reservations for 9:30pm, and enjoyed the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, the service . Until waiters started asking us "are you still working on this? " which is SUCH an annoying question, and SO inappropriate for such a high end venue! We come to a place like this to enjoy, not to be rushed!! If staff wants to go home by 11pm - don't except late reservations! If you DO except late reservations -let your guests enjoy what they pay for! Before we were done- waiters started collecting table cloths from neighboring tables, set for next shift, and clearly exoressing how much they all wanted us to leave already. .! This behavior is Sadly very typical for San Francisco, but we did not expect it in a place that charges average of $250.00 per person! It kinda destroyed the experience for us.
Zero flexibility on their cancellation policies on $1,400 in room charges even though called first thing in the morning. Even escalated to management. Refused to give a voucher. Refused a future stay. BEWARE.
Rude front desk, unhelpful, and outright deceptive with hotel credits. At check in, the front desk lady promised a $60 dining credit due to my Amex Platinum booking. At checkout, they did not honor the credit they promised.
Avoid this place unless you enjoying being lied to and ripped off.
This has been one of my favorite hotels I ve stayed in. The staff is friendly, the room was great, the gym had good equipment, and I fell in love with the soft robes they had in the room. They did an amazing shoe shine on my partners shoes. There is a computer in the business center that you can print your boarding pass. And in the mornings they have free coffee, tea, and muffins!
My wife was initially unhappy with our room after contacting customer service they were very accommodating and switched us to a better room and my wife was happy and satisfied. The staff is awesome and the customer service is next level. Would recommend Taj Camptin Place to anyone visiting San Francisco and needing to stay somewhere in Union Square with 5star service.
