I booked this hotel through a 3rd party and so stayed at a significantly reduced rate compared to their posted rates. It is incomprehensible to me that anyone would pay $700 (as posted) for this hotel. When I arrived, the gentleman at the desk was the only indication that this is supposed to be a nice hotel; the service he provided was excellent.
However, once I got to my room, I can only assume that they give their worst rooms to those who book at a discount via a third party. I was on the lowest floor, with their conferences rooms. Once when I got off the elevator, I ran into a staff member who seemed shocked I had gotten off on that floor. I understand that they wouldn't give me their nicest room as I didn't pay full price, but on the other hand, my first experience staying here virtually assures that I will never stay here again; if they cared about repeat customers, I would think they would care about how they treat guests on their first stay.
As far as the service at the front desk, checking in was the only time it was superior. I asked them to send a 2 page fax for me and was surprised on checkout that I was charged $6 for the privilege. First, for a $700 per night hotel, why are you nickel and diming me? Second, if they had told me they were charging $3 per page, I probably would've gone to a copy store and done it myself.
In addition, ever since checkout, the hotel has emailed me daily (until I unsubscribed obviously) - what hotel does this? I think one email to follow up on the stay ideal, but multiple? why? More bizarrely, they also sent me multiple emails addressed to other people. Has a malfunctioning robot taken control of their servers lol? Unclear, but so weird.
In summary, I don't know why anyone would stay here. It is expensive but unclear why; thus it feels like a very poor value. SF has plenty of hotels in the same price range but with far superior service and facilities.
