This is THE WORST hospital I have even been to. They treat you like the ones in horror movies.
My grandfather was admitted to this hospital an average of once a month this entire year. Why, you may ask? Because every time we went into the ER to be treated, we d never actually get the problem solved. He will be admitted, and they ll say they need to do one thing, causing him to need to stay X amount of days, and then completely not do it, and let us go that day/the next day.
He currently has a GI doctor, Liver, heart, eyes, and regular. Since he has been in so many times, they continuously keep getting worse on their hope and faith in his chances of living. According to the common doctor, every single other doctor he is seeing, except maybe the eye doctor, has completely lost faith in him, and have stopped trying to cure his diseases. We live in Fredericksburg, VA, making us an hour and a half away from this hospital. We never get to choose our appointment times, sometimes they ll give us one at 7 or 8, making us have to leave around 6AM at the latest.
They think he is not treating himself well, or taking care of him the way they say to, even though we try very hard to.
Later, his hemoglobin kept going down, causing him to have anemia. We went in because we saw rectal bleeding. Because of the low blood pressure, and without even trying to raise it, they refused to give an endo/colonoscopy, so they just assumed it was hemorrhoids. So they treated that, and let us go. They claimed that there was only 1 type of medicine to treat his low BP, and basically told us that, if this doesn t work, then he ll only have about a month left, tops, and that we should consider palliative care.
His hemoglobin was in the mid-high 5s, and they got him up to 6.8 and refused to give him more, which basically gave me the vibe that they didn t want to waste it on him.
About a month later, we went in for the same reason. They said pretty much the same thing, didn t fix anything, and left us to leave while putting him on dialysis. About a week prior to this visit, they said dialysis may be a possibility in the future, but it s not an immediate issue. So they didn t even address the issues, and let us go with something completely different from what we were concerned with. Ever since he s been having dialysis, he has been weak, retaining water even more, much more fatigued, and has more bad days than good.
Three days ago, we finally decided to go to a hospital in town, and when we explained everything going on, they were completely shocked an appalled at how terrible the VA hospital was treating him. The hospital he is currently in, found the problem, and tried to resolve it instantly. They immediately gave him a DIFFERENT medication than he is currently on to help his problem with blood pressure. His hemoglobin was 5.5 when we entered on Wednesday, and they raised it up to to 8.3 by the next morning. They realized it wasn t stabilizing, and decided to figure out where bleeding was going on, and see if they could fix it. They did an endoscopy, found some internal bleeding, and cauterized it, helping make his hemoglobin stable, all in less than 24 hours.
Long story short, the McGuire hospital is a death hole. I would never EVER recommend my worst enemy going there. They have almost killed my grandfather because they have given up on him, and don t want to have to waste the time of dealing with him. Only about half of the nurses are nice, and only 2 of the doctors I have met are not doom and gloom and only think about death.
I would never recommend this hospital. Ever.
