This place is a JOKE. My boyfriend and I came in there with the intention of adopting a dog. We fell in love with an Am. Staff, Blue. We went through all the hoops, put in an application, and were one step from adopting this handsome boy. We were told that our application looked good upon a quick glance, but they had to call the apartment we were going to move into (at the end of July) to check if the apartment accepted that breed. They also said he would be put on hold for us if our application was approved.

The next day, we stopped in just to say hi to Blue. We were told that our new apartment we are going to move into did NOT accept Blue s breed and we had a choice that came from the adoption manager herself.... either we don t get Blue due to the restriction, or not move into the new apartment. It was a no-brainer to us! We fell in love with Blue and his chill personality so we chose to not move into the apartment. We let the manager know that later on in this visit.

The next day, my boyfriend stopped in with his two brothers (18 and 13 years old) just so take dogs for a walk and the youngest brother wanted to pet another cute dog, not even to talk about the application! The adoption manager/receptionist stopped all three of them, spoke to my boyfriend directly saying we were denied and were not allowed to see Blue or ANY OTHER DOG for 6 MONTHS!! My boyfriend asked why, the lady then said it was suspicious that we had moved twice in one year, and they didn t want the dog to know more than one place. My boyfriend and I are both in our early twenties, have very good jobs, and, yes, still rent, but that shouldn t matter if we moved twice in one year. We have never been evicted, but our first apartment was getting water damage, so we had to move to the second place we had put down in the application. The lady still didn t believe him, so my boyfriend and his brothers left feeling bad and defeated. He told me what happened that night, and I didn t really believe him... ONLY because I put so much trust into this place and into these PEOPLE.

I personally went there the next day and spoke with a very nice receptionist that I ve never seen before. I then overheard two other receptionists (whom snuck into the back when I got there) and say oh, SHE S here!? After I asked the status of my application. I wanted to see if they would be honest and tell me we were denied, or give us the run around. The nice lady came back and said we are going to call your current landlord on Friday (it was Tuesday at this visit). And I thought that was that....

Friday come along... I work about 2 minutes from this place, so I stopped by to check what was all going on. My landlord informed me that he never got a call from them. When I got there, I spoke with the adoption manager (the ONLY manager around) about the application AGAIN. She told me that she had left a voicemail for my landlord trying to verify that we lived where we said we lived. I verified the phone number, and apparently it was the correct one. Before I left, she said oh, by the way, he s being put on hold for someone else. He was supposed to be put on hold for us! She told my boyfriend and I two different things/stories/statements. I just felt so defeated with this place that I just walked out. We never actually got denied as far as I know. When I got back home (20 minutes later) my landlord had still not gotten a call, so I had him call them. The receptionist on the phone said the adoption manager had left already and won t be back until Monday...

I just feel like this place has ZERO knowledge on what s going on with applications. We have put so much time into this place to adopt a dog. WE GAVE UP OUR NEW APARTMENT FOR THIS DOG! We really had our heart set on Blue... please don t adopt from this place, they are NOT trustworthy, and they will break your heart over and over again. Horrible place. I have never encountered such an unorganized place such as this. All we wanted was to help adopt a dog in need, love it, and give him the best life possible...

I adopted my cat from here, through Petsmart. I originally went into the shelter looking for a kitten, and they made me fill out an application before even looking. I ended up leaving to come back later since the only two kittens there were already going to be adopted, which they didn't tell me until I asked to put one of their names on my application. I didn't even see any other cats, besides a tiny room of (what they said were) elderly cats in front, and the back room where the ones who were sick or not ready to be shown to the public (for whatever reason) were kept. How does a shelter that big not have any adult cats easily accessible for adoption? It kind of seemed like they just wanted to push the kittens, since they have adoption fees and they go faster.

I ended up going into Petsmart a week later and found my cat. The shelter was closed and I couldn't call about my application so the representative just made me fill out a new one and approved me on the spot. Which was nice, since I didn't have to wait, but also kind of sketchy? I mean, it's not like they'd have any reason to deny me, but shouldn't they call references and make sure I'm allowed to have a cat since I rent, at the very least?

I bought the same food they'd been feeding her, the Petsmart brand, which the guy told me to get. She adjusted wonderfully when I brought her home, except she barely ate or drank anything for about two weeks. She was already super skinny and was underweight by at least pound (according to the vet). She got very stressed and started losing fur/getting sores above her eyes. I called the shelter and they basically acted like it wasn't their problem and told me to call the vet (which I'd already done...they told me to call the shelter and see if she'd been sick before I adopted her). I switched her food and within a month, her fur wasn't patchy anymore, she was happier and more energetic, she was finally eating, and she'd gained half a pound. Which to me means she was given that cheap, crappy food for three months, just because they probably got a discount on it.

I mean, I know they (apparently) feed them the food they get donated. But I've seen their facility. It's the nicest shelter I've been in. You'd think they would be able to tell when a cat doesn't like their food and isn't eating, and they'd have the common sense to switch her food. They already had her isolated in that tiny cage for three months claiming she couldn't be around other cats (something that also isn't true, since I brought her with me to my moms over the holidays and she was perfectly fine with her two cats), on top of not eating. No wonder she was stressed. Thank god I took her home when I did, since apparently "no one wanted her for some reason." Which is ridiculous since she's the sweetest, most loving cat I've ever seen. Maybe don't advertise her as a cat no one wants? She wasn't even listed on the website or Petfinder.

The whole process of adopting her and taking her home was just a little annoying. Take care of your animals. Like I said, she had been in that tiny cage at the store for three months, so it kind of seemed like they just wanted to get rid of her. They took a picture for their Facebook too and never posted it. At least she's being properly cared for now.

We got our first cat zohara from this place last October and now we re expecting to bring another cat into the family named Larry. The staff was very understanding when we arrived at 4 and stayed till close because of my busy school schedule. There were many wonderful cats to choose from that I just wanted to bring all of them home. It s a place that I definitely love coming to and would go to again if I were to add another family member or get one of my own when I move out.

Was there today for 45 minutes looking to adopt a kitten and the whole time I was there no one went out of their way to help me. Finally went up to the desk to ask for help and they were helping other people before me, answering their questions and doing adoption processes before answering a simple question for me. Was very disappointed and taking my business to Oshkosh

We adopted a wonderful dog who we enjoy immensely. Yes it took awhile but was worth every moment. For those of you complaining about the inconvenience of a long wait, do what we did. Be patient and understand the majority of the people who eventually take care of you are UNPAID VOLUNTEERS. Obviously they could use more help.

We recently lost our cat. We intend to go there this evening to see what they have. We'll be happy to wait as long as need be.

They told me that my animal was safe for 30 days when I had to surrender my baby girl. They called me 6 days later and said no one can get near her so they are going to put her down.. now they are charging me 150$ or they are putting her down.. Absolutely disgusting that this is how we treat people and their pets.. Did I mention the fact that I'm homeless? They don't care.. For the love of God, don't bring your animal here...

Such friendly staff!! Love the cat rooms where you can spend time freely with the cats! I dislike the fact you cannot spend time with a animal you're not interested in bringing home.. but overall BEST smelling, friendliest, well taken care of animals!

The person who assisted us showed she cared when our 6 month old kitten got out and we could not find her. We got her home thanks to some people seeing a post who had taken her in.
Please everyone, if you can adopt an older cat, do so. They all need love and care and cannot wait to get homes.
It broke my heart to see the older cats in there but they are well taken care of.
I just want to spread the word for anyone who can donate to this cause to do so. They are a no kill shelter who does all they can to find homes for the animals.

I was here for the Pitbulls 101 class in January. The room we used was clean, comfortable and worked perfectly for the class. The bathrooms were clean. The parking lot was easy to navigate. The front desk staff was friendly.

I love it there! It`s my favorite place to be when I have free time. I have visited so many dogs from FVHA, and I loved every one of them! My family and I, are moving to a bigger house with a bigger backyard. I was thinking we should get a dog and my whole family agreed. I knew this is the place to go. We know exactly what breed, a Shepherd Mix. I`m very excited! I might even think of working there with my daughter. If you want a pet THIS is the place to go. Thanks for my GREAT experience, FVHA! I will never forget you!
Lots of love to the pets there,
~Luna

This is hands down the nicest humane society I've ever been to, and I've volunteered and a number of them. Really great facility, and it's obvious that the staff are well-trained. Definitey the first place I would go to adopt a new family member.

One of the worst shelters I have ever been to. Adoption process is horrible and if you do a little research into the amount of animals they euthanize, it is sickening. This shelter should be closed down.

We finally got our cat after 2 months of looking. This place takes great care of lost animals. Only 15$ to get them microchips and a small fee to get them out of "kitty jail". The workers are friendly and great people!

I think the people here genuinely care about your animals so much. They do their best. Seemed clean, and have a good sized pen for the dogs to run around in. I'm grateful this place exists. My dog ran away and although I had to pay to quite a bit to get her back, it's for a good cause and I made sure to donate some bags of treats. Thank you for doing what you all do.

I have adopted both of my cats through this location. They give you plenty of time to acquaint yourself with the animals, and have a good paper trail of care to answer questions about medical care recieved and special needs.

I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to add a critter to their family.

We brought our 3 year old cat Isabella to the place to get a free chip or something. The line was supa long but we got her chip. She was cold and we are all. I saw some cute doggies and kitties and it was mucho cute. The dogs barking constantly inside are annoying and I'm vegan, but there are cute kitties here so yeah

I would stay clear, looking to adopt a service dog, and went in today to get more info for adoption. Didnt ssem like they could prove they work with the animals, have to believe what the forns say. Second you cant go see the dogs, and spend time with them. When asked to see if there happy and facilities are clean, and to see all animals front and back was quick to get a sorry we cant do that. What are they trying to hide from the public is what i want to know.

Facility had a lot of cats!!! Cat lovers should be flocking there. Most dogs when I was there were mid- size, like boxers. I have 3 dogs, so I was mostly checking it out since I support many dog adoption places already. I see no reason for not adding them to my growing support list. I love that places like this serve as a temporary homes, so we can adopt them as forever pets. Pets are incredible friends!!! We may care for them, but we can never pay back all they do for us. Keep loving the dogs and cats!!!

I adopted a 3 year old doxie/bagel mix about 2 moths ago and she suffered from sever separation anxiety. We stuck tons of money into training and what not with no help. A week ago we decided to get her a friend in hopes it would help. We adopted a 1 year old terrier mix on Monday and took her to the vet for her check up on Thursday where everything checked out fine. Come Sunday she was pooping tape worms! Being new dog parents we freaked out and our main concern was that our other dog didn't get the worms too! The type of tape worms she had come from eating fleas which the vet at the emergency clinic said she contracted while at the shelter. We contacted the shelter on Monday when they opened to let them know what happened in hopes they could help us out with and they were not helpful or willing to help us out. We have had this dog for a week and have spent over $1000 on her. I am very upset with the whole experience and how it is being handled because I adopted a dog thinking everything was fine with her and it wasn't. On a happy note our other dog loves her and no longer has separation anxiety, all she needed was a friend.

I had a great experience adopting a cat here. It was a Saturday and the shelter was extremely busy as they were waiving fees. Yes it was hard getting someone to help. But as someone who's volunteered at shelters I understand how crazy it can get and adopters just have to be patient. Here's what could be improved in my opinion:

- have some sort of system where people get he'll based on when they requested it. Like the deli department at a supermarket, grab a number! As someone quieter and not as assertive it was harder to get help. Some people adopting were acting like it's black Friday and there wouldn't be anymore animals for adoption. I'm kidding but it was busy;

- instead of a two day adoption process maybe try to make it one. The cats I adopted in the past took one day. I was up there from Chicago and almost went home without one but luckily I had a ton of documentation and contacts for same day adoption.

- I had a cat in a room and got forgotten. No one came back and I didn't know what to do. Eventually I had to get up with her and take her out to find someone to help. I wish the rooms where you check out the cats were all in one section where someone could monitor.

Here's what I like, best for last:

- the shelter is really nice, big and clean;

- the staff does there best with what they have, it's a huge place and probably understaffed as most shelters seem to be. They don't have a ton of money to pay big bucks for a lot of employees;

- the animals seem really well taken care of;

- staff, despite the stress level and limited time of interaction, were very helpful and caring;

- the lady at the front desk was really nice and helped me despite being overwhelmed with people asking for help, wish I knew her name but without her I would have gone home without a cat. I recently lost my 17 yo and was looking for the perfect one and I found her, but I was only there for a day and needed help and she did;

- I made a donation when I was checking out. I've done it before at shelters. I don't make them for praise and thanks, i do it to help out. I've made donations at other shelters and never heard from them at all, not even we got the donation. This shelter thanked me. Knowing they appreciate it helps. But knowing they got it is the most important and will lend me to making more there on the future. Maybe every birthday of my new cat, have to figure out her bday first though!

Anyway thanks again.

P.S. she's a Bears fan now! I converted her (it's animal abuse to keep her as a Packer fan!)

A great place to help save a life. Or even go and help out there too! Good for the critters and great for you. I ADOPTED my dog there the other day and everyone was so happy that he got a new home. They where sad because some of them made great bonds with him too. He never leaves my side in less my kids have French Frys lol

I adopted a young puppy, listed as a lab/retriever mix from Tennessee. I figured it was not lab, but maybe a hound mix of some kind. After my disappointment I found out she was pitbull. I went back in to complain that a pitbull was not what I signed on for and the lady dog shamed me like I was dog racist or something. She threatened if i returned her we could not adopt for 6 months, and with her attitude i doubt they would ever choose us for a dog. We had watched a few Ceasar shows and knew a dominant species was not for our family. She was a sweet puppy so we thought maybe this lady was right and kept her. Fast forward 5 months we start giving her freedoms like laying on our bed....she started pooping in her kennel, running off, ignoring calls. We went for a vet visit. She had no health issues. We hired an amazing trainer, and have found out that we were not setting the right rules for this breed. She is now in line after an amazing 3 days but it is too early to tell if she will ever completely fall in line. We will not know for possibly a year if we will be able to have her sleep in the bed or allow her on the furniture. Thevworst part is I have a five year old who is very heart broken that she can't play (part of training)....my biggest question is if my five year old doesn't show his dominance can I trust her around him. These kind of dogs require rules, she may have to have these strict rules forever, depending on her personality. She may accept we are alpha, but them again she might compete forever for that position. Now we have plenty of love invested in her and I am at square one.....I don't think she a good fit for our family? Had the lady at the counter just said I am sorry your questioning this, they can require some extra work...I could have made a more educated decision.

I helped a dog out of his abusive home (he was starving in a small kennel in his own filth) and I surrendered him to this shelter in hope they'd find him a forever home, multiple family members of the abusive owner called and asked to please not allow the owner to buy him out of the shelter, because by the law the shelter has to advertise the dog since i was not the owner. Well they let him go with the owner and 3 days later the dog died. NOT HAPPY. It did not go unnoticed that this dog needed out his nose was rubbed raw trying to escape his kennel.

Went to go adopt a cat, stood at the counter for about 10 minutes, no help. So we strolled through wasting time & looking at more animals until the line went down in the front. Finally walked back to the front & there was one person in front of us. A lady said she would help whoever was next & a person walked out from the hallway & said that she needed help with completing adoption. Stood for another 15 minutes & at this time the lobby was filling up with people. Once the woman in front of had her animal & was leaving every employee left the counter for about 5 minutes. Then when they returned they both looked right past us & started helping other people scattered throughout the lobby. Very frustrating. We waited for another 5 minutes just to be ignored. Will never return, felt awful because I was looking to take a cat out of the shelter but makes it hard when employees completely ignore you. Worst experience ever.

My husband and I went to the Humane Society in the Fox Valley, to help a pet find a home. We were allowed to view the animals and allowed to visit with them, then filled out a adoption form. We were told that we would need to wait until Monday to pick up the animal. Then, found out that they did not call both of the vets we had listed on the adoption form. We called back several times to figure out their progress in the adoption, only to call a week later and they still had not called both of the veterinary clinics listed. Finally, we called to see what was going on and were finally informed that we would not be allowed to adopt the pet because our 10 year old dog was not fixed. The dog is too old to have puppies, and we were adopting a cat that had already been fixed. Basically, this is information they could've shared with us the first day we were there, but decided to string us along for an entire week. Rude, discourteous, and extremely sad for the pets that are there.

I was very impressed with my first visit to FVHA, the facility was bright, big, CLEAN, and the staff was very friendly. For being a very busy day the staff that was there was doing their best to help each family the best they could. The awesome staff helped me find Duke (previously Shaggy) and didn't get annoyed when I came to play with him every day while he was on Kennel Cough medication before I could take him home.
Animals come and go very quickly at FVHA and the staff are volunteers, so please be patient if there doesn't seem to be enough staff or they aren't positive on details of an animal!
Thanks for helping me find the perfect fit for my family :)

We'd like to start off by saying THANK YOU, you made our house a home again. We were devastated by the loss of our beloved furbaby Monkey Butt, and along came our 2 new kids. We adopted LadyBug (aka Lady), and her brother Zazzles (aka Justin), and we're soooo glad they picked us! We'd especially like to thank Jenn for her help in introducing them to us. Both kids are adjusting beautifully, and having a ball realizing they have run of the whole house. Compliments to your facility, clean, and totally dedicated to the adoption/saving of animals that need some love. I've included a pic of LadyBug, (she LOVES the sunporch). Zazz is still a little camera shy, but has really let his personality shine through, and is settling in fast. Thanks again for bringing these 2 incredible creatures into our lives and home.

This place has forever changed my opinion of shelters. I too had believed the old stigma of shelters in general. After a very bad experience with dropping a dog off I was bound and determined to not ever adopt from here. Thanks to the grace of God, my child needed volunteer hours for school. So begrudgingly I agreed to volunteer here with him. BOY WAS MY THOUGHTS WRONG!!!!!!!! I quickly realized what I had always thought of FVHA was very wrong. In 6 short months, I made volunteer of the month, my son made junior volunteer of the month, I got hired on to care for the cats we took to PetSmart. I now am a full time adoption specialist, the people who tarnished my opinion of FVHA, have since been let go, and I get too see first hand how very dedicated the shelter is on finding each and every animal a home. I can now say WE love each and every animal and will everything in our power to find a furever home. No matter how long it takes. These animals are spoiled rotten. FVHA is a beautiful wonderful place. I highly recommend anyone who is unsure about shelters to come visit us. Ask for a tour. We will gladly give you one and answer any questions you may have. I have family members who adopt from FVHA. infact....I've gotten 9 birds.

The staff withheld info, lied and do not care about animal welfare! Nor does they're Director Deb Lewis. Very disappointed

About a month ago I adopted two cats. A 5 month old female and a 12 year old male.
As it turns out the older cat was up for adoption with a medical disclosure! This Medical disclosure was NOT mentioned to me at any point. My cat needs 4 teeth removed and is in pain. He had almost died due to a reaction to anesthesia at the shelter so they chose to abort the surgery. This condition will not be cured once the teeth are removed, It will continue onto the other teeth.

I contacted the shelter to complain about not having been told about this condition and asking for help to pay for the problem. Seemed the least they could do since they had handed me a problem without warning. They lie and say that I was made aware prior to adoption. Untrue. I was told by the manager Jenny to "just bring the cat back and they would give me a new one." At this point my family is already emotionally attached to the cat and willing to pay future medical bills, That was an unfair option.

After many unsuccessful calls to the Director, Deb Lewis, I finally heard back. She was unkind and straight to the point. A "sponsor" was found to pay the dental bill. I was to bring the cat back and they would find another home for our cat. In my opinion, this is emotional blackmail!!
The next interaction with Deb involved her being rude, uncompromising and her hanging up on me.

A mistake was made on their end. All I ask is make it right and staff learn from it.

My family was deemed a good fit for this cat by shelter employees, whom come with the highest regards from Deb Lewis. This being the case and sponsor being available there should be no problem fixing his dental problems and sending him back home. But no...

We did not adopt a pet from the Fox Valley Humane Association but we have stopped in a few times. There's always someone there to answer questions and help the animals find their forever homes.

Our family has adopted 2 cats from the Appleton Humane Society, one older and one kitten, both were sick and never should have been sent to a home,we spent money on vet bills that should have never taken place, all in all we ended up turning both cats back over because they never got better, we donated money to them on top of what was asked to adopt.
I personally would never go back there to adopt a pet.

This place is terrible. No one there cares except for one person out of the three years that I've been going there trying to adopt a pet. I never get anyone to call me back or to complete the adoption process there for the dogs that I always call to check in on the application process the dog is gone. Only one person so far that I spoke with today has helped resolve the issue but it still will not give back the 3 that I did want to adopt and I know I would have been able to adopt. Even when we were there visiting the past it seems as if you can never find someone there to talk or they don't know at all how can you have a job and not know about the job positions or the descriptions of the pets that are there , that you have to give your customers it is crazy. I would never go back to this one particular Humane Society in Appleton and I also will call the Better Business Bureau and report them because I'm tired of the games in the garbage that they give to people who actually want and will take care of these pets like their their family I even saw a customer come in there and they gave the dog right to him without thought process that I have been going through for the past 3 years. I asked why did he path to go through the process. I was told because he had no other pets and he owns a home. That is so unfair and very judgmental of the employees and the staff that work there at the Humane Society in Appleton. Everyone may not have a house and everyone may not have any pets at all so how can you bathe a dog have been in a safe environment and home off of those two things. How do you know that I don't have any other pets. I just cannot stand this Humane Society.

MANGE!!! POTENTIAL ADOPTERS BEWARE! Fox Valley Hum...

MANGE!!! POTENTIAL ADOPTERS BEWARE! Fox Valley Humane Association is infested with multiple parasites! October 2017: I adopted a pup that had been diagnosed and treated for Coccidia two weeks before I rescued her. According to the chart they gave me, which included other shelter dogs, she was not the only one infested. Dogs can get this parasite from having any contact with an infected dog's feces.. But then, after bringing her home and noticing multiple bald patches emerging over the weeks, I bring her to my vet only to find out she's also infested with demodectic MANGE! And again, she was not the only one. A friend's colleague from work adopted a pup, same location, about same time as I did, her pup was also confirmed to have a proliferation of demodex mites as well. FVHA is extremely unsanitary and is haphazardly putting the animals (and adopters) at risk for infestations and infections! Clearly, their vets are not performing adequate examinations [if any] of the animals before sending them out to be seen and handled by potential adopters. Each person who comes in contact with these pets is being exposed to these conditions as well. I can't even think about how many unsuspecting parents and children are being exposed to this on a daily basis.. Personally, I find this very upsetting that a thorough examination isn't being given due to the fact it's supposedly "included" in the pricey adoption fee. So, including the medication, my vet bills were equally as much as that adoption fee that stated the dog was examined and perfectly healthy. It's such a scam!!

Update 05/03/18 :

On April 23, my pup saw the vet again for review of her demodex condition. It was slightly resistant to the first treatment and now both she and my older dog are having to be treated for the next few months to clear up any remaining eggs.. It feels like a never-ending nightmare, all because we wanted to add another loved member to our family. I loathe the Fox Valley Humane Association for their extreme negligence, and for the suffering and uncomfortableness they've caused to both of my pets. I had even contacted the supervisor after the first diagnosis, I gave her my vet's information to confirm, and she told me they are REFUSING to help with any of the vet bills, medication costs, or to reimburse the $400 adoption fee. They refused even though we were not the only adopters who complained of our pet contracting a demodex infestation from that SAME LOCATION! All they care about is getting your money and snapping a quick pic for their website, they care nothing about the animal's actual health and wellbeing. I'll continue to warn people against them for as long as the business remains. What an absolutely disgusting excuse for an animal shelter!! It's bordering on animal abuse. Horrific.

We are very happy with the sweet kitty that we adopted, and were happy to take her home without her rabies shot with the understanding that we could return in a few days to get that done. It's been over a month and we can't get anyone to call us back to get something scheduled. I will pay for this to get done from a vet clinic as it's important but am very disappointed in this organization.

Great place

Great place
I so wanted Gable to become my emotional support cat but after over a month I brought him home Feb19th Gable continues to hide all the time. I think he unfortunately is too farell to be adopotabale. When I try to bring him out he claws and attackes me. I have pictures of cuts in my legs, hands and chest. My son has claw marks too. It is now April 10 and the final straw was Gable popping in my bedroom for the sixth time. It took me 45 minutes to capture him this evening. I'm saddened for Gable as I don't see him being adobtable. I gave it nearly 2 months. April 10th I'll be returning him. I have several adorable videos and pictures but he's just not an emotional support cat.

Sincerely
