I adopted my cat from here, through Petsmart. I or...
I adopted my cat from here, through Petsmart. I originally went into the shelter looking for a kitten, and they made me fill out an application before even looking. I ended up leaving to come back later since the only two kittens there were already going to be adopted, which they didn't tell me until I asked to put one of their names on my application. I didn't even see any other cats, besides a tiny room of (what they said were) elderly cats in front, and the back room where the ones who were sick or not ready to be shown to the public (for whatever reason) were kept. How does a shelter that big not have any adult cats easily accessible for adoption? It kind of seemed like they just wanted to push the kittens, since they have adoption fees and they go faster.
I ended up going into Petsmart a week later and found my cat. The shelter was closed and I couldn't call about my application so the representative just made me fill out a new one and approved me on the spot. Which was nice, since I didn't have to wait, but also kind of sketchy? I mean, it's not like they'd have any reason to deny me, but shouldn't they call references and make sure I'm allowed to have a cat since I rent, at the very least?
I bought the same food they'd been feeding her, the Petsmart brand, which the guy told me to get. She adjusted wonderfully when I brought her home, except she barely ate or drank anything for about two weeks. She was already super skinny and was underweight by at least pound (according to the vet). She got very stressed and started losing fur/getting sores above her eyes. I called the shelter and they basically acted like it wasn't their problem and told me to call the vet (which I'd already done...they told me to call the shelter and see if she'd been sick before I adopted her). I switched her food and within a month, her fur wasn't patchy anymore, she was happier and more energetic, she was finally eating, and she'd gained half a pound. Which to me means she was given that cheap, crappy food for three months, just because they probably got a discount on it.
I mean, I know they (apparently) feed them the food they get donated. But I've seen their facility. It's the nicest shelter I've been in. You'd think they would be able to tell when a cat doesn't like their food and isn't eating, and they'd have the common sense to switch her food. They already had her isolated in that tiny cage for three months claiming she couldn't be around other cats (something that also isn't true, since I brought her with me to my moms over the holidays and she was perfectly fine with her two cats), on top of not eating. No wonder she was stressed. Thank god I took her home when I did, since apparently "no one wanted her for some reason." Which is ridiculous since she's the sweetest, most loving cat I've ever seen. Maybe don't advertise her as a cat no one wants? She wasn't even listed on the website or Petfinder.
The whole process of adopting her and taking her home was just a little annoying. Take care of your animals. Like I said, she had been in that tiny cage at the store for three months, so it kind of seemed like they just wanted to get rid of her. They took a picture for their Facebook too and never posted it. At least she's being properly cared for now.
