Up to this day I always thought that LMC was the quintessential care of quality that my family, friends and I have always experienced. Early morning, on April 7, 2016, I visited Lutheran Medical Center Emergency Room. My overall visit was greatly disappointing.
My symptoms were: high blood pressure, left side numbness radiating to the neck and mouth. The events of that day are as follows:
Trying to get immediate care, my husband and I went thru the ambulance entrance. I encountered a male that ask me what was going on. When I told him, he stated that he doesn t have beds and I had to go back to the other entrance. Another male took me to the other entrance to follow him.
After registration, a male that was sitting by the desk took me to an adjacent room for an EKG. He stated in a very monotone manner not worry that I was not having a heart attack. I asked him to show the results to a MD. I expected more patient sensitivity interaction from him, as looks good, let me show to a doctor not a diagnosis.
I then waited 15 minutes to be taken to a room.
The same male that took my EKG took me to a room. When we were close to the room a female voice said that room is closed, but the male still escorted us into the room. The male individual then proceeded to put a sheet on the bed. The room was dirty with an overflowing trash can, with trash on the floor, used gloves next to the sink and the most disgusting observation was dry blood on the pulse oximeter.
The same female voice came into the room and started an IV and lab. She stated to call if I needed anything.
Then, I heard the female voice in front of my room saying that she was leaving. She didn t come to let me know as a gesture of handover of care to another nurse. My husband asked a female that was sitting behind the desk to unhook my IV needed to go to the bathroom. She asked if I had given a urine sample. He responded that no, because we were not asked. While in the bathroom, she knocks on the door to give me facial tissues because the toilet tissue was out. I am thankful that my husband was with me, as he was the only one assisting in getting warm blankets and ice chips.
After 90 minutes, a female came and introduced herself as a PA. She asked me what was going on and stayed for 45 seconds. She then stated that she was going to put some orders.
In the meantime, various other people came into the room. One came to change the glove box from the wall, while totally ignoring us. Then another came in to change the sharp container, this person at least said good evening.
A female came in to give me an injection and I refused, I did not know what it was for. She didn t provide details.
After the PA received my blood work results, she came in to tell me the blood work was negative. She was chewing on something, as she spoke to me, which was very distracting and unprofessional. Her recommendation was to wait another 3 hours to undergo some more tests.
Given the stress of my symptoms and poor patient care, I decided immediately to go to St. Anthony.
The only positive experience from that day was the fact I wasn t diagnosed with anything major. However, this event was a complete and total administration failure. What ever happen to patient care and respect? What happened to quality checks for sanitation? The attitudes of the employees are a direct reflection of the management and administration of the hospital.
As I started this letter, LMC was a place that always faired highly in my regard. This visit was not poor because of one incident, but several incidents in one. Thus, I cannot see that things just went wrong coincidently. The lack of service provided is a demonstration of bad management, a disregard to employee training and development that has been brewing for several days or perhaps months before my visit.
As a member of the community, please take my letter as a means to improve and/or correct your administration and patient care.
