Wow.

Had a wonderful evening at Alinea!

Had a wonderful evening at Alinea!

Every dish was so carefully crafted and so wonderfully clever, that I had an amazing time. Alinea is definitely about both the food and the experience, so I would definitely recommend coming here!

Firstly, when reserving online, may have to be lucky in getting tickets as they go fast, but worth the price. You can also request things and hopefully they can oblige! We asked for signed menus of the dinner and got a picture with Grant Achatz! Was so kind of them to fulfill our requests for these, and I am so thankful that they did.

Loved every dish -- from the clever way they presented everything to the remarkable taste. Felt like a performance while eating. Don't want to ruin too much of the surprise, but they definitely take you on trips in the restaurant and try to fool you during your dining experience.

Also, must comment on the wonderful service! They are so kind. My friend had a terrible stomach ache the day we went, so the staff was kind enough to ask us if we would like some tea and even asked what different types of tea we would like to choose from!

Anyway, wonderful experience, definitely recommend if you get the chance!

I booked a night for my mom and I for her 60th birthday and what an incredible experience we had.

The staff was all too friendly and a complete joy to be around. We loved our curly haired man that seated us and gave us our wine. His hair nearly matched my mom's, which felt like we were all meant to be! Ricardo was our main server who made us feel SO special. We were sickened to hear it was his last night and we happened to be his very last table after 5 years before making a big move to Texas. We wish you the absolute best Ricardo!!! Overall, everyone was an expert on the dishes and more importantly, they have a love for working at this beautiful restaurant that radiates in every room. My mom and I were just sobbing by the end of our meal, overwhelmed with appreciation and love and the staff cried along with us. It was amazing. (I'm tearing up just thinking about this <3)

The food was absolutely heavenly. We ate up every bit and refrained from licking the plates, even though it was whole-heartedly difficult to do so. I think I died 3 times over when we were taken downstairs and I got to see Head Chef, Grant Achatz. It took everything I had to leave him to his work and not attack him with hugs and crazy fan-girl behavior. Every plate was something so different and sooooo interactive, making the entire thing more than just about food, but a created experience of interacting with it all! IT WAS JUST AMAZING, THERE ARE NO WORDS.

Thank you to the incredible staff and the incredible cooks. You gave my mom and I a surplus of memories that will last an entire lifetime, and I couldn't have achieved that without you all. (crying again lol) Thank you for giving us something I can think about and get flooded with emotion every time. I hope you all go to bed every night knowing that you gave us something that can never be replaced, even in our wildest dreams. I will relive the moments created in Alinea for the rest of my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

God-like ability to make anything be anything - oh...

God-like ability to make anything be anything - oh that clear ice is chocolate cake? That sheet is langoustine? This is served on a pillow leaking Aspen smoke? - is used to entertain, surprise, and hit perfect flavor notes like the best potato of my life or a summer beach memory of brown butter clams.

Presentation is both subtle and astounding e.g. bucket of flaming salt with glowing coals somehow feels cozy and homey on a October evening.

Tonight's (10/25/17) sommalier was the best - thoughtful, interesting, and full of appreciation for what made each wine special. Didn't catch his name but tall, glasses, blond hair.

Of course all the staff look like sexy butlers.

Be prepared for the wildest dining experience ever! The whole dinner was like a theatrical performance with very artistic presentation of the dishes, showcasing more of the super advanced culinary techniques rather than taste. Some of the dishes tasted kind of weird. Some were too salty and for a lot of them the flavors did not blend well or complement each other. Lots of contrast in flavoring, but not well-put together. There was one dish that was so salty I couldn t take in more than one bite. Very rich and creamy dishes.

Service was exceptional. Kitchen was impeccably clean, organized and well-run. It was awesome being able to see all the chefs at work.

I d still recommend Alinea if you want an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience.

Mr. Joy and I pulled the trigger on making a reservation at Alinea, and anticipated an amazing meal for nearly two months. We arrived at the rather unassuming, nondescript grey building, and walked through the double doors, were greeted by the friendly hosts, and led upstairs to our Salon seats.
The dinner immediately began with some mentally stimulating theatrics. We sat down in front of an inconspicuous fruit bowl, which then was set off with dried ice, and released a misty fog on the table.
We were also given a crossword puzzle with words that revealed hints about the menu.

White | asparagus, jamon, basil:
Excellent! I would never even be able to fathom that white asparagus could become the texture of fluffy sponge cake and something akin to sorbet. The jamon and basil powder acted as a savory seasoning.

Kaeng | scallop, mustard, chili:
Great! Thai curry scallop noodles were topped with more crunchy, skinny noodles.

Glow | lemongrass:
Excellent! Two glowing test tubes containing fruity tea shooters with micro flowers and jellies capping both ends of the tubes. This was a perfectly refreshing accompaniment to the spicy, creamy noodles.

Ink | octopus, scallion, black lime:
Good! Chewy black octopus tentacles with crunchy ends was presented on a smooth black rock.

Stem | morel, oxalis, goat butter:
Good! Spongey cube of morel mushroom with a smattering of oxalis leaves next to a pool of goat butter.

Tail | pork, trumpet royale, huckleberry:
Good! Chewy slices of trumpet mushrooms, huckleberry jelly, and minced pork

Branch | maitake, acorn:
Ok! Meaty maitake mushrroms atop puffed acorn chips

Tea | matsutake, lemon, thyme:
As if this trio of mushrooms doesn't satisfy a mushroom craving, it comes full circle with mushroom tea.

At this point they led a group of us into the kitchen for a brief tour accompanied with snacks and drinks.

charred tortilla with chicken tinga, Oaxaca cheese, avocado, mole:
Good! Crunchy little taco pocket with tiny dollops of avocado and mole and micro flowers

spicy margarita - red bell pepper shaved ice
Good! Refreshing with a mild bite. They also prepared a virgin mocktail for one of the pregnant ladies of the group.

Rossini | wagyu, frites, foie gras:
Great! Throughout the meal, there was a tiny crockpot cooking up some beef over a flame. Perhaps this part of the meal was a nod to Rossini, to signify the apex of the meal, or it is to refer to the food being cooked in a Rossini pan.
When we returned to our seats, they finished off the beef in a pan of rosemary, garlic cloves, and olive oil. The juicy tender bite of wagyu was plated next to veal reduction and accompaniment of seasonings. I appreciated the flavoring options, but there was probably too many options for the bite size piece of wagyu.
Ear | wood ear, truffle:
Great! Also accompanied with crunchy wood ear mushrooms, black truffle puree, and pomme frite puree

Transition | yam delice, apricot:
Great! Even more surprising, there was a yam cooking beneath the flaming crockpot, hidden throughout the entire meal. Our server plated the creamy sweet potato with whipped goat cream and nuts.

Wood | hoja santa, tamarind, chocolate:
Ok! The smoky wood on the table was meant to give off herbal aromatics. The crisp hoja santa leaf atop more creamy, nutty dessert.

Corn | popped, caramel, liquid:
Ok! A whimsical, sweet and salty near-end

Balloon | helium, green apple:
Great! What a delightful way to eat green apple candy in the form of a toy. The helium sure changed Mr. Joy's voice into a comically high one, but it didn't make much difference for my voice.

The meal sure impressed straight out the gate with the asparagus dish that tasted more like a dessert, and the curry scallop noodles, which I never would have guessed was made from an animal byproduct. Some dishes were interesting to try, but weren't very exciting. My favorites would have to be the melt in your mouth wagyu beef, and the spicy margarita, and the balloon, because how could I not enjoy that?

It was the kind of experience, like summer camp when you re 15, that is so powerful that it aligns with all the words you wish you could have saved to describe this: amazing, stunning, life-changing.

Alinea is an experience. If you're going there to expect a simple meal, stay home. Alinea is an amusement park where each service is a culinary rollercoaster. Each dish is an unexpected adventure. Every bite is delicious. This is the first three Michelin star restaurant where I was completely blown away by the originality of the dishes, the quality of the staff and the incredible fun that accompanies each service. If you can afford it, Alinea is definitely worth every second and every dollar for every bite.

The food is unbelievable. Everyone said it all already, but I will say one thing different than others...

I've been here 4 times, and each time I saw people taking pictures of their food -- it was really weird when someone asked if they could take a picture of MY food. Get ready for a really different experience here. I don't remember art being on the walls (but maybe there is?) -- what I remember is thinking WOW - the art is on my plate!

My perception of the place was different based upon who I brought -- 4 different people. Go with someone who appreciates fine dining and someone who doesn't mind eating unusual food.

I have been looking forward to eat at Alinea for t...

I have been looking forward to eat at Alinea for the longest time, after mostly trying all of the 3 Michelin star restaurants in the US and overseas (Eleven Madison, French Laundry, Chef s Table @ Brooklyn Fare, Lung King Heen, Le Bernardin, Per Se, etc, etc.). Unfortunately, the experience was not even close to 1 star, let alone 3 and all the accolades the restaurant received.
This review also takes into account that this was not the original Alinea location given renovation, but it was at Alinea in Residence temporary location, so this review completely ignores the fact that it was set in a tent used for catering events and weddings.
So here is the round up of some the 11 courses with wine pairings, although sadly for a restaurant of this caliber, there was no specific dish that stood out.
Hamachi: overcooked and dry (when we provided feedback we were thanked for it, but no further effort was made to improve the experience i.e. offer a replacement, etc)
Beef: was chewy and arrived cold, although it was wagyu and super marbled. Needless to say that cold fat part of medium rare beef is anything but gross and ended up not finishing it. No one bothered to ask why I sent back a plate that still had food on it or if there was anything that I did not enjoy.
Wine pairing: to our dismay, after the first wine pairing (which was a Chablis), the waiter wanted to pour sake in the same white wine glass!!! My husband was in shock but managed to ask: is this a clean glass, aren t you going to change it from white wine to sake?! Unacceptable for a 3 star Michelin restaurant.
Side note: all wine glasses were the same (stemless water glasses), no specialized glasses were used to match the wine to the appropriate glass, so clearly the perception of aromas was hindered. Again, for a fine dining molecular gastronomy experience, one would expect that every single note and flavor would need to revealed, but guess that s not the case at Alinea.
Waiters would show a bit of an attitude (especially the lady waiter), would mumble the dishes unintelligibly under their mask and upon us asking to repeat some part of the food description, you would get a higher pitch, slightly annoyed voice, which would only discourage us from further posing any questions.
However, Stuart and the sommelier deserve a shout out for the thorough explanations and descriptions, and for the impeccable service. I throughly enjoyed when the sommelier (sadly did not catch his name) immersed us into a dreamy artsy world, explaining what the moving art blocks in the restaurant are in reference to and how some deserts in the original Alinea location were inspired by the works of Joao Miro.
Lastly, and the only personal comment I will make pertains to the fact that we were celebrating our 9-year anniversary. The team was aware, we got congratulated, and... that s pretty much it. No other acknowledgement was made in the form of anything. Eleven Madison made a big deal at our 3-year, prepared a special cake with a candle, even gave us a gift to take away. We were particularly disappointed as the restaurant just went on to their pre-set dinner sequence and did not make the slightest attempt at personalizing our experience and making us feel like we were acknowledged and celebrated.

Overall, the experience was mediocre and disappointing, food was anything but outstanding, and even worse, everything had the feel of a catering hall, where the food is pre-made, pre-heated and definitely not worthy of a Michelin nod, let alone 3!

This was a 2nd dinner at Alinea. Our first dinner was about 10 years ago for a 40th birthday celebration. The restaurant has been remoldeled and looks artfully elegant. The food here is spectacular in its taste, presentation, and imagination. But service here is different than our first experience. The majority of the servers appear to be in their twenties. While they are proficient and eager in the presentation of the dishes they do not possess the polish of years of experience which was in abundance at our first dinner. Considering a dinner and wine pairing here can cost 500.00 or more per person plus 20% gratiuity the servers experience should be substantial. The only miscue I observed was a course which required the entire salon to walk downstairs to the kitchen for a presentation of an antique drink mixer which was used for a drink and dessert course. Our table was ready for the dessert course but there was two or three tables which were at least one or two courses behind. I don't think serving a dessert course to someone in the middle of their meal is a good idea. I would definitely go back in the future for the food and presentation alone.

Alinea is not a restaurant. Alinea is an experience. A moment in life where you will have to open your senses, to open your mind and let the magic happen. Each bite is a stone that builds the path where the Chef takes you. I was over there a month ago, and I needed this time to be able to talk about this incredible evening. Do not guess : just reserve and come.

If you want a great 3 Michelin star experience go to eleven Madison park in nyc. If you want an incredible molecular gastronomy experience go to Disfrutar in Barcelona. They blow this place away. The service at Alinea is well below Michelin standard. Also, the staff is not very knowledgeable about what they're doing/serving. We paid $500 per person to sit at the "kitchen table" and Grant refused to take a picture with us after the meal. I've been to Michelin restaurants all over the world and never experienced anything like that. If the food had been exceptional, which it wasn't, I would have overlooked some of this to an extent. It seems like they put more thought into the presentation of the dishes than the actual taste. One of the deserts was good though. Waste of time and money.

Dining at Alinea is an extraordinary dining journey. The courses served, including Pebble, Chocolate, Graffiti, and Balloon, are unexpected, intriguing, and most innovative. This restaurant is a stand-out in its class. Dining at Alinea is, most definitely, to experience culinary art.

My husband and I decided to celebrate our 3rd anniversary here with a couple of friends that were celebrating their 8th. We have been wanting to go to Alinea forever so we were all very excited about it.
The experience was wonderful- the restaurant had dimmed lights and the furniture was in grey tones that gave it a very modern sleek look. The staff was very welcoming, friendly and professional. We were very impressed with the sommelier that was very knowledgeable and gave very good recommendations as we didn't choose the wine pairing.
The food presentation was exceptional and fun. My favorite being the helium balloon and the duck. The tastiest dish was the corn, white chocolate, honey and mango dessert as well as the tuna. The ending was fun too when the chefs came to our table to prepare the last milk chocolate dessert though unfortunately that was the least tasty dish of the night!
I haven't given it 5 stars mainly because I was comparing Alinea to other 2 or even one michelin stars (that I have been to) that delivered an amazing experience as well but tastier food. In this case some dishes just didn't taste that exceptional.
I would recommend going to Alinea because it definitely is a one time experience! I only recommend a wine pairing if you feel you will need more than2/3 drinks throughout the night. I was happy with one amazing glass of chardonnay and the great food and company.

One day I decided to have dinner with all my family, for us it is difficult to find a good restaurant since we are all vegan, but we heard about this restaurant called Alinea, which met all our expectations, the vegan options were delicious and the service incredible , the atmosphere of this restaurant was magnificent, a negative point would be that there are usually too many people in the place and in my opinion the tables are close together, but the food is excellent has many options for vegetarian, vegan and many gluten-free foods too, meals worthy of a chef, we really need more restaurants like this in Chicago as there are very few, the staff always serves you in the best way and brings to your table everything you need, the atmosphere of this place is very elegant and feels relaxing so you will enjoy your food to the fullest, this place is ideal to take your partner or celebrate a special day with your friends, family and love

The most spectacular dining experience of my life. The 14 course tasting menu is of the upmost quality, presentation and creativity. From the caviar encrusted spoon to the helium filled apple taffy balloon, this four hour dinner will go down in my personal dining history as a top memory. Special shout out to the staff on always being attentive and present but not overbearing.

This has been a new experience for us. The molecular gastronomy I had experienced before Alinea had been limited. The artistic and technical aspects of Chef Grant Achatz kitchen are remarkable, sensational, prodigious. This was my second visit to the restaurant, the first visit was pre Renovation. My first experience cost my wife and I over a $1000 and was worth every penny. More recently we invited a couple to join us, assuring them that this would be the most memorable dinning experience of their lives. The experience was memorable but for the wrong reasons.

The staff; Positive notes first, the staff, without exception were wonderful and reminiscent of the Alenia that I remembered. Unfortunalty things went steeply downhill from there.

Presentation; There were a few interesting features which we enjoyed. I will spare you the details as I don t want to spoil it for anyone that will be going to the to the restaurant. Overall however, this was a huge let down compared to my previous experience.

The food; Some of it was great, the rest not so much! Lots of fluff like fancy plating and reconstructing foods so that they looked like something different ( again I m being vague as I don t want to spoil anyone s visit). This would have added to the experience had the food been better. Quantity was light to say the least, for $500 a head I would have expected to walk away full. The choices for the wine pairing were perfect however, the volume of wine was scant and there wasn t enough time between glasses to properly enjoy the pair.

In summary, I was very dissapointed with my dining experience as were my guests. I am shocked that Michelin has assigned the new Alinea 3 stars, perhaps the Michelin folks should go back for another look, I know that I won t be going back.

We have wanted to go to Alinea for a few years and finally arranged trip to Chicago with friends to go to Alinea on Halloween. We did the Alinea wine pairing which was totally worth it. We ate in the glass room which was experience of a lifetime. We were all open to the entire experience and it was worth every penny. The experience was a mind blowing combination of art, genius and amazing food. Chef Grant truly is a genius! We will be back!

Good was great, service was on point and the decor was beautiful. The food is totally different than anything I've ever experienced before. The preparation, presentation, and combinations were incredible. However, I was disappointed in the lack of a narrative. The flavors and themes for each course seemed disconnected. They had special meaning to the chef, but that messaging was missed. This is experiential eating, so having the meaning and thought process behind the menu feels important. I asked a few questions, but they didn't seem super welcome. For example, when we left, we were presented with sheet music for the William Tell overture, which inspired a dessert....tell me more. Why did we do an Asian course followed by a hunting inspired course.
Overall, it's beautiful, elegant and delicious. Definitely worth the experience.

Not much to add at this point. The rumors are true: It's awesome if you're into a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. If you're looking to be stuffed then you probably won't like the experience, but, man, this is just such a unique spot. Worth the spend if you're, you know, that way.

Every minute at Alinea was unforgettable and none of us wanted the night to end. My friends and I were fortunate enough to snag coveted spots at the kitchen table this past Sunday night where we had front row seats to all the action. We were taken through a twenty-something course medley of the most sensory-stunning dinner any of us have ever experienced. This meal was a perfect example of a dinner that was not just a delight for the taste buds but a feast for all the senses. Some courses were visually impressive with plays on texture and light, while others included fragrant scents pumped into the room for added effect, a few were accompanied with musical pieces ranging from classical to jazz hip hop that correlated with the dish being served, and the final dessert was a glorious masterpiece in itself. The icing on top of this culinary cake was watching Chef Achatz and his extremely well-synchronized team of experts crafting a dining experience that was nothing short of magical. Truly a memorable dinner that should be on everyone's bucket list.

Overall I enjoyed my overall multi sensories experience in Alinea. There is many clever tricks with in the "show". The junior sommelier guiding us were very helpful in helping me choose the correct wines for the meals (she saved be squid & yam dishes for me). The wait staffs are wonderful and knowledgeable. Alinea is not 5 stars for me because they served caviar and four gras with in the dish. First this ingredients are unethical, but also its nothing special with these ingredients beside the price. In my mind, talented chef should be able to use everyday ingredients and elevate it beyond normal everyday cook. Expensive ingredients do not showcase of a chef's skill. Looking forward to seeing what Alinea have to offer when we come back to Chicago.

I highly recommend this Korean restaurant to everyone. It was a year ago when my sister and I visited this restaurant. We both loved the food here. Especially, the kimchi fried rice and the samgyeopsal were taste so good. We like the ambiance of the place. It was so cozy and relaxing. It feels like we're in Korea.

Hmm, really conflicted about this place... the creativity was off the charts but everything else was just meh. Our expectations were high so maybe we set ourselves up for a fail? The service was not tight enough, too informal (winking and profanity??) for a 3 Michelin Starred restaurant and the flavors were not complex or unique in anyway. We got two total pieces of meat, squab and crab... it s not important to get more meat but the lack of unique ingredients was an issue ( Grace had Waguy, squab, lobster and fish). Beef jerky doesn t count. Definitely not worth the $700 for two people.
Loved the multi-sensory experience with the heat, the liquid ice, the oranges, the coals, the smoke from the oak leaves ... etc.

Kilimanjaro is just a mountain; Paris is just a city; a Ferrari is just a car. Alinea is not just a restaurant. Eating at Alinea is surprise; it's magic. You have to reserve months in advance and that means you get to anticipate for a good long time. It's worth the wait.

This is a dining experience you'll remember for life. My advice is slow down and take it all in at your pace. Be sure to come very hungry, very thirsty, and on a night you don't have much the next morning.

The service is excellent, and the plating is beautiful. The food wasn't the exquisite experience I thought it would be. Half our courses contained fish or seafood; if you don't love them, don't go. It's just not worth nearly $450 a person (without alcohol).

A great experience. We don't usually fine dine in this fashion but it is well worth it. Every dish was a work of art that until you experience the meal hits all the senses. Smell from a special scent in the middle of the table, visual eye candy, great unknown textures, and obviously superb taste. I was worried about stepping away from the table hungry, but that was not the case. Will definitely revisit Alinea next time we are in Chicago.

Service is incredible. We went for the experience and it was worth it to witness the creativity! Some dishes were fantastic and some were ok. I m extremely happy and in aw with all the talented individuals to execute each dinner service every night. Bonus - I forgot my hat and they sent it to me! Thank you!

GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!

GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!
Went with husband, daughter & son-in-law while staying with them for the Christmas holiday. We had reservations. When we arrived our table was not ready & they had to accommodate me as I had a knee walker. Staff was very friendly & found a place where we could sit with me being comfortable & be out of the crowd.

Purchased a ticket two months in advance for this special experience, and it was amazing! The moment the door was opened, we walked in to the season of Autumn; a hallway filled with leaved on the ground, pumpkins, a bin filled with water where warm spheres of hot apple cider were floating as it were an apple bog. We kept walking to the next door which opened to the restaurant. Since Alinea is as much about the experience as was the food, I won't describe the dishes to give it away. The service was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Everything was perfect, clean, well-explained. The level of detail for the food as well as the quality are at levels I've never thought possible. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience, and if you have any reservations about dining here for any reason, stop second guessing yourself and go.

Heard it s average, but didn t expect it s this terrible. Food is very salty. Some serving staff talking so loud while talking directly to your food. Bad hygiene. And very very rude. For one course, I was cutting the garlic and one serving staff came over and took it right away while I was cutting it. Never ever seen that from a none rated restaurant even. So I asked if I can have the garlic back and he said oh chef didn t say you can eat that. He made it sound like I ve never had food before. I am in the middle of dinner right now because it s my anniversary, I have to sit through it. Don t waste your time and energy here. Try Acadia and oriole, so much better. Unbelievable this place is a three star, wonder what s the rating standard, the more terrible the more stars I guess. Absolutely the worst ever experience in fine dining.

We heard about Alinea many times and finally decided to try it last month. It was just incredible, i'm speechless. Everything was perfect, the food, the service! It was not only a meal, it was an experience!
