BEWARE!!! Gave us room keys for rooms already occupied.
This place isn't just dingy and derelict, it's dangerous. Other reviews have mentioned the dirtiness and squalor of the rooms, so I won't linger over those points except to affirm them as true. I checked in with two friends. We each got separate rooms - figured "why not?," as the price was right. Two of us checked into our rooms and found that we got what we paid for: run-down motel rooms. It was a bit unnerving entering my room and finding that the light switch served no purpose, and having to engage the light on my cell phone to locate a lamp. But there were no huge red flags yet, and we aren't afraid to rough it a bit. Next, however, occurred something which was downright frightening and potentially dangerous. The third of our party tried to enter his room and the door was sticking at first. I don't know whether this was because the safety bolt was partly engaged inside, but on a second attempt with a bit of a firmer push he got the room open, only to find the bed unmade and that the room seemed to be being stayed in, or at the very least to have been recently occupied. We didn't investigate too deeply because once again the light switch didn't work and we could only see what the light from outside the room offered to us. We decided not to enter and look further because there was no point, we'd need another room with a made-up bed in any event. So we went back to the front desk and explained and were given another room key. We then proceeded to the second room, on a corner at the back. Pulling up in front of it I noticed the light of a lamp coming from inside this one. I suppose after what had just happened to us, that should have made us more cautious. But it isn't completely unheard of to check into a hotel room and find a table lamp lit to welcome you. So we didn't overthink it and went to the door. The key card worked and unlocked the door - this time, however, it was an unmade bed that we encountered but an occupied bed. Occupied, as in, there was a naked man lying atop the covers.
Long story short, we all three returned our keys and went to the Marriott nearby instead. The whole experience was unnerving, but I consider us fortunate on the whole as much worse could have happened. If the man in the second room had leapt up and attacked us things might have ended in actual injury or worse. I mean, I might have reacted that way if a stranger walked in on me in my hotel room. There's a reason, after all, that hotels don't routinely give out working room keys and send guests to rooms already being occupied by other people. Maybe The Varsity thinks this is a fun game and a way of fostering collegiate spirit? Joking aside, this place is a disgrace, and beyond being generally skeevy and gross it is downright dangerous. It sent us to two occupied rooms in one night! I can't comment on the quietness or quality of sleep in the rooms because we didn't stay to find out. Other reviews seem to indicate that you can get a good night's sleep here, but I'd personally find it difficult to sleep if I knew someone might walk in on me at any moment because of the ineptitude and lack of concern of the management.
Avoid this place. You might not save as much money staying elsewhere but you'll save yourself a frightening experience and maybe save yourself from injury or worse.
