I am a LVN, done medical all my life, and the ER needs major improvement, I would give it a negative if I could! JACHO needs a call or two.
My mom was in the ER recently for a blocked LL femoral artery with purple toes and pain. I arrived at 1530 and had to wait an hour to see her because she was in the ER but in a waiting area within the ER. I get it they are busy and full.
The vascular surgeon came within one hour (1630) of her CT and explained what was going to happen, "We'll get you fed, pain meds, and walking, angio in am, etc." We continued to sit there well after shift change. Finally, noting one hour after shift change no one had checked on my mom, no vitals, no questions, NOTHING. At this point, 1730, she is in a ton of pain. She asked the ER tech for her RN. The ER tech was great. He got her back to a geri chair outside of a room, took VS and finally the male nurse came about 2000 and offered pain meds. Well, I noticed when I arrived earlier with my mom her IV had infiltrated while she was in her CT scan. I told the nurse she needs a new IV, that the pain med was not going to go anywhere do to the bump in her forearm from the infiltrated IV. He locked shocked that I knew, hello: I am clearly dressed in scrubs, coming straight from work. It took him a ton, like 5, times to only keep missing her veins. Another nurse came and he was great, got it on one try. So now it's 2130 and she finally get that pain med that she was promised hours ago. She never even got asked if she wanted to eat dinner as she was not NPO yet and they knew well before dinner she was being admitted. A friend brought us food. She went to the tele floor just after 2300 and what a diff. The nurses up there are great on the 4th floor.
This was our first EVER experience here in this ER and I have worked for a hospital for 11 yrs previously and this ER clearly needs help! More or better, more organized, compassionate nurses. My mom was never in a ER room or on any monitors. It shouldn't take hours for a Pt to receive pain meds. This nurse acted like he was super lazy and didn't want to be at work. I had to get the ER tech for a little old lady who was also his Pt after her family had left and she began yelling for help. I get it, we have lives outside of work too, but when you are at work, work or don't be there, esp. when being in the medical field. It's not like she was in there for a cold. She had a 90% blockage and had stints placed the next day and absolutely received poor care in the ER. Kaweah's ER should be ashamed. Not once did the nurse check her pedal pulse. And want to talk about HIPPA violations. How can a doctor and his team come and talk to my mom and I in a waiting area within the ER with other ppl sitting there sick too and give out her diagnosis and procedures + vise versa! I heard one doctor tell a Pt he had the flu, we were just sitting right next to him. Just absurd and shocked! Very sad and frightening. My mom is going to have her toes amputated now.
