After I submitted the below review Ron contacted me and offered to do a new free diagnostic. We've gotten that done. In the process of troubleshooting, they replaced the spark plugs in the car with the ones that should have been used and let me keep them in for free. They spent a lot of time on the car and figured out some steps to take going forward. I have modified the below review to remove a slant that was expressed before and make some things more clear. Ron also let me have a free oil change. (Note: Although Ron asked that I would change my review, he made no suggestions about how to change it or what score to give. My comments are my own and considering how far they went to correct things I have no problem with giving them 5 stars.) In all honesty, it would be better if I had contacted them first instead of ranting.
Old Review:
I took the car here a few weeks ago for a diagnostic. I've waited to see how things turn out and I can report on the accuracy of the diagnostic. They told me that most of the stuff they listed as recommended services were simply because of the mileage of the car. That is, if we assumed that I never did anything to take care of it, these are the things that would need to be done, for example, replacing the spark plugs. (My spark plugs were replaced by the one who sold the car to me.) I'm cool with all that given that they were honest about why those things were suggested, but the guy acted like I would pay for them without question. Aside from that, He told me what the engine codes were and said the MAP sensor needed to be replaced based on that. This is very reasonable and I mentioned prior that I've been needing to replace it.
However, he also said that the timing belt was stretched out. I asked how that happened and he said from age. He said it was hitting against the housing. He also asserted multiple times that there was no sticker indicating its replacement. I told him that I believed the person I bought the car from had replaced the timing belt so he questioned me about if it was the serpentine belt. I admitted I wasn't sure about that. I told him that I would buy a MAP sensor and replace it myself.
I looked for myself and was reminded of a fairly large sticker near the front of the car stating the replacement of the timing belt. I've replaced the MAP sensor, but it hasn't solved the problem I've been having. It's totally reasonable, as other mechanics would likely have resorted to replacing the MAP sensor at this point (The cracked tubing was already replaced and the old MAP sensor was cleaned.); so there is no fault there, even if it turned out that the problem isn't the MAP sensor.
