Excellent care for all of the animals they take in; easy adoption process.
Got my dear Lucy about about 2 years ago from y'all she has been my best friend ever since. She is a perfect dog , she get compliments wherever she goes. Now I'm trying to get my friend a dog but it's so hard.
If you want a pet, go here. They also partner with EMANCIPET which is a terrific place. I have taken all of my pets there for quality pet care given with care and concern. Also consider donating both money and goods here they can use. They have a donation box right in the parking lot. The pets here need homes. It kinda broke my heart to go here because I wanted to take them all with me. Especially the big dogs.
great staff and very happy with my new kitty, she is very happy with her new home
We had a great time volunteering taking some of the larger dogs out for walks. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
Austin Animal Center is the largest 'no-kill' animalshelter in the US. They house hundreds of animals at a time and take in tens of thousands every year. Everyone is very nice and helpful and adoption fees are low compared to what the animal receives when it leaves (spayed/neutered, rabies vaccine, microchip, booster shots, flea and tick and heartworm prevention, etc)
It feels much nicer than the other shelter in Austin. They worked pretty quickly and were friendly when we got our puppy. They also worked with us when it came to vaccinating our puppy. The location is great, but it's a pain to get ahold of them by phone. You have to call 311 and they'll email them for you. Just go in person, it's much easier.
It s an incredible animal center. In fact, I ve lived in many cities across the U.S. and it s the best animal center I ve EVER seen. Incredible people. My experience December 31, 2015 was incredible, I adopted my first dog, Journey and I still love her with all of my heart today. We have the best friendship. I m coming back soon to find her a brother!
Staff was amazing. This is the largest no-kill shelter in the country. It deserves our support.
I've been a foster here for 2 years and I'm so proud to be a volunteer with this wonderful organization.
Very clean and organized. The animals look healthy. I got my kitten from here and he was already being treated for respiratory infection. The staff is very friendly and they give you everything you need.
Wonderful no kill shelter that goes above and beyond to make for better lives for animals that end up in their facility!
I went there to adopt a small dog the staff was very helpful even though they were overworked they could really use more volunteers so if you love animals and have the time volunteer they are doing great work. We found a new puppy that has completed our family for less than $100.00 we got a puppy that was micrchiped had shots and was spayed. For such a small price we are now a complete family. I highly recommend adopting from Austin Pets Alive and volunteering if you can
I loved the atmosphere and aura I received when I arrived at this beautiful establishment. Im just so grateful that they kept my dog safe and looked after her when I couldn't. And for that, I am forever thankful
Facilities are clean, animals seem well cared for, volunteers and staff are friendly and helpful. I went to adopt a cat - and though didn't find my perfect cat here- loved visiting and playing with the rescues.
As a Travis County resident, I took my dog in to get microchipped for FREE! We were greeted and taken care of as soon as we walked in the door. The process was thoroughly explained and we were in and out in 10 minutes. Definitely recommend Austin Animal Center
Such nice people that work there!!! They had a great experience!
Friendly staff, great place to find lovable animals. Kinda lengthy adoption wait, but it's worth it.
The volunteers are great and have a good attitude. My only complaint is the process of adoption is pure chaos. Figuring out what to even do when you walk in the door requires a steep learning curve.
Love Love Love this place!!!!
Truly amazing people work here & they do some awesome work!!
Clean, well-staffed, and efficient. We went looking for dogs here and had a great experience even though we didn't ultimately adopt. Keep an eye out on social media for their awesome adoption specials!
I liked the pictures and descriptions of all the animals that are up for adoption
A wonderful place doing amazing things for the animals of Austin. It was an absolute pleasure volunteering here. If you want to adopt, please look no further!
These guys are great! There was a dog wandering our neighborhood with a hurt eye. I took her to AAC, but no vet was available at that time on a Saturday, so they advised me to take her to Emergency Animal Hospital on Frontier Trail ( whose front desk staff would NOT get a good rating from me!) so she could get vet treatment before being transferred back to the shelter. It was obvious they really care about what happens to the animals. Good people.
Terrible experience. Waited 2 hours to pick up my cat after he was neutered. I watched lots of people come in after me get seen first. My cat is 2 days shy of being elligible for a rabies vaccine but I ll just have to pay for that myself Worst shelter experience I've ever had. On another note my cat is awesome
I have to be honest I pulled over here to fix a flat tire but while I was in the driveway I was offered help by every single worker leaving this place.. Friendliest people ever
Precious I love Animals recommended for parents to take their family to meet different Breeds of animals beautiful moments
They take pretty good care of the animals there it seems, but also seem to have a huge habit of adopting one dog to multiple people, adopting found dogs that have been reclaimed by their owners to another person, and never, ever, ever answering there phones or returning calls. I signed for adopting two dogs, and they failed to let me know one of them was already adopted until I arrived at pick up time, and they double adopted the dog I did end up getting as well. Mind you, I was the one who found them in the first place and made it very clear that I wanted them should no one reclaim them. I called everyday and never got a clear answer, and when I visited they failed to walk me through the adoption process correctly. In the end they offer nothing more than legalities and half-a** apologies. The worst customer service I have ever experienced.
I've been very few animal shelters in my lifetime but I will say that this has been the nicest well thought-out and laid out animal shelter I've been to. Their volunteer programs also fantastic I really allows you to have an understanding of what a shelter goes through on a day-to-day basis to get these animals ready for adoption.
This shelter and its staff support staff-first-choice adopting and doing so by hiding 8 week old puppies in the hot outdoor kennels furthest from the main building and not marking them on the website or as adopted .
Even if they just came in 2 days ago and aren t even cleared of their shots, staff can apparently reserve animals for themselves and keep them as far away from the public as possible, and they re encouraged and supported in doing so.
I m extremely disgusted at this practice and how everyone in a city funded shelter is completely complacent and encouraging of this dangerous and shady practice.
I ve adopted 3 pets from this shelter but I will not be funding them nor recommending them like I unfortunately have in the past.
Austin Animal Center is very impressive and very helpful!
Staff was excellent, environment was very clean and nice...adoption went smooth and fast thanks all of yall for what yall do!!!! Gemini loves her new home...
They took in a lost dog that we found in the side of the road. They contacted the owner to reunite their lost dog.
Absolutely amazing shelter. My hubby and I went for their rescue possum adoption event and we ended up adopting a raccoon instead of a possum, but the folks at AAC were still very kind and helpful and showing us how to raise and care for wild, nocturnal mammals. We will be coming back next month for the Cuddle a Squirrel event!!
Great place love what they're doing I don't know if it's me but sometimes during the summer time the smell is a little strong for me
We have been there a couple of times, for different reasons. The staff are always friendly, helpful, compassionate, and very competent.
Soo frustrating. I don t know why good reviews. If you want to see a dog you ve found online forget about it. you need to schedule thru website and you ll never get appointment fast enough. One time I got lucky but they needed to cancel (ok) but that sent me back to the end of the line scheduling (instead of helping me see the dog since I was next). They said look for a cancellation! But... impossible...The problem is the website. You never get to a person.
And this is after, filling out application scheduling an appointment getting lucky rinse lather repeat and on top of it the email never got to me one bureaucratic problem after another. So sad.
If you schedule to get any dog that s there you ll do better.
My love just surprised me with Orange Tabby!
The place was awesome and the workers helped me with every question I asked. The place was nice and clean! Christmas was a success! THANK YOU!
P.s I'll be going back in a month for another Cat for my Daughter
We went to AAC 3 weeks ago to adopt a cat. After checking on a lot of different kitties with the adoption conselor, we finally chose a 1 year old female.
She is an amazing cat, playful, clever and clean.
I would really recommend AAC for anyone who wants a pet. Just take your time to chose the right animal for you, they have plenty with different backgrounds/personalities.
Thanks AAC.
So many lovely animals!!! What a great facility. I've never seen such a spacious, welcoming shelter.
Very impressive facility! I got my first dog from here and it was a great experience.
These guys do a great job reuniting pets with their owners.
AAC is incredible. All found animals go through them and then can be transferred to Austin Pets Alive! if medical care is needed. They do adoptions as well as APA! and the staff is incredibly kind, friendly and helpful. Call them with any questions you have and even if they cannot help they know ALL the pet related recommendations in Austin. Thank you AAC for all you do!!
Very helpful and knowledgeable people. I was watching a friend dog who got out and took off running. Shortly after the neighbor watched found him and referred me to these guys. I was relieved and happy to know it took a few docs to get my friend dog back. Thank you Austin animal center for helping me through that stresssful experience.!!!
The staff was very helpful in reuniting us with our grand-dog. Cowboy is doing great and loving his forever home.
It's great that they are trying to help out animals in bad situations but they don't respond in good time and an animal I wad trying to get some help for died.
I didn t know what should I write about this place except thanking all the people that are doing a great job and volunteering their time there. All staff there are friendly and do their best to help all those cute and nice animals to find a home. Please go and help either with your time or money.
I found a marked stray by my apartment with a big, ugly cut in his arm. AAC took him in right away and cleaned his cut up. Saw the little guy happily hanging out in the bushes by my place a few days later
Went there to see if my list dog was found. It wasn't my puppy but the staff there were so compassionate and caring.
Loved it! Great service, great food! Sorry didn't take pictures, I just devoured it!I I had the 'Monster Texas ' and if you know me the dish was perfect....Four years of pure hell makes one a Monster!
,
Very clean. Seemed well organized. Liked taking the dogs out and playing with them.
Customer service is horrible here. Employees were nowhere to be found, and the wait was ridiculous. I had to wait for 3 hours to be told that the cats weren't ready for adoption. Went to the kittypalooza thing, and that was not a good experience... we got a kitten that was supposedly healthy, and negative on all his tests. I asked for the records, and they said they'll email it. I asked again if he had any medical conditions or medical history.. I was told no, he is perfectly healthy.. Foster parent said their vet diagnosed his eye as a permanent condition of excessive tearing... Well, I took him to the vet, and was informed that he was never tested for the FIV and the other feline testing... parasite tests weren't in the record. I told the vet, the records say he was tested... well, apparently his SIBLINGS were tested only... and has history of recurring eye infections. I reread the records, sure enough, it said there "siblings tested negative" in small print. So I had to spend $210 on these tests that the damn center should've done before releasing this cat... Will they help out? I doubt it.. The fact that they had so many kittens just given away to practically anyone that day was sad.. they literally took the form, flipped the pages without reading them, and said "ok, you can take your kitten home"
So I was given incorrect records and information.. but what do I expect for a free animal, right?
He's a great kitten.. and I will keep him, but the center needs to improve and work on their honesty
I brought two strays in to Austin Animal Center. The woman who helped me was good a her job and incredibly compassionate with the dogs. It felt good knowing they were going to be taken care of!
I'm afraid I must agree with many who have reviewed about the bureaucracy. I was sent a photo of a Bichon Mix and told that he was at the Austin Animal Center. I went down there. I've adopted over a dozen pets in the past 30 years from the Humane society and I went down there and walked out with my dog. Not at THIS place.
No wonder they have so many to care for.. Honestly it is as hard as adopting a baby. I had had a hip replacement about a month before I went down there. Their handicap parking is NOT ADA compliant. It was 40 yards from the front of the building. I had to stop and sit three times before getting in to the building. Beautiful lobby (I can see what lots of "donations" paid for). I was there 20 minutes before anyone would tell me the protocol. She sent me to the next room to stand in line for 30 minutes. When I got to the counter, I showed the email they sent me with the photo of the dog on it. They looked him up and gave me his ID number. Sent me back to the room where I started. I was the only one at the counter and the two employees, volunteers or whatever were carrying on a conversation and could see me standing there but ignored me. I finally said, "Excuse me" and they turned around. One of them waited on me VERY SLOWLY. Finally she went in another room to do some research on him. The place was crowded as it was Sunday. The entire time I was there, I only saw THREE people actually leave with an animal. No wonder they are so overcrowded.
After 30 more minutes she came back and informed me that the dog was not up for adoption. She said he was at the vet having kidney surgery. and that after that, he would have to go to a foster home to recuperate, and after that he would be available to adopt. They told me to go online and fill out a form and also giving the ID # for the dog. I told her that I wanted to put a "hold" or something so he would not be adopted out. She told me to put it on the form, So I did it.
So I called a week later. The ONLY number you can call is 311 and get in the queue and wait 15 minutes to talk to an operator, THEN all they do is take a message and pass it on to the Austin Animal Center. So they returned my call a couple of days later and said he was still in foster care recuperating. Again I was EMPHATIC about being notified once he was available for adoption. She said she would try, but if the foster care person brings him to the shelter to be adopted, that they put him in an enclosure with his number. They said they could call me, but if a person walking thru the center at the time we were on the phone wanted to adopt him, it would be first come first served.
Due to my handicap I could not run down and spend every day at the shelter walking the runs looking for the dog. Two days later I called to see if he was available. She came back and said, "He was released from foster care yesterday morning and was adopted yesterday afternoon." No one had called me.
I will never donate a dime to that place. I have a feeling it won't go to help the animals, but for building a lavish structure on very expensive real estate (which they could sell for megabucks) and move further out and have more funds to work with. This was physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing for me. They are choked with bureaucracy. They told me I could come down and look at some of the smaller dogs. I told them no thanks. I only adopt pure bred dogs. Their temperament is know as well as strengths and weaknesses of the breed. I got one Afghan from the pound, another Afghan Hound from Austin Afghan rescue and my Bichon was from a lady who had gone into hospice and could no longer care for her. With mixed breed dogs, you can never be sure about behavioral issues. I'll be adopting elsewhere and no, I do NOT want to adopt one of your Chihuahuas, like the girl suggested. I informed her that I'd been bitten twice by dogs. Once by a Doberman and once by a Chihuahua.
Not at all happy with their method. They have long information form, but I had to wait for 10 days before getting to talk to a rep. She said I couldn't have a cat because I said it would be both in and out doors. I went to the Austin Animal Shelter and got a cat that day.
Intake and adoption by appointment right now but adoption fees arw waived during Covid. Friendly staff. They will happily help if you call.
Everyone was super nice and welcoming. I'm definitely going to volunteer here.
this is the best animal center i have been to, when i got there, there were a lot of volunteers walked dogs around, staffs were friendly and helpful, when we came to adopt they have the easter eggs for adoption fee for my son to pick out, he picked two off them which both empty as of FREE adoption fee, we donated to show our appreciate to the hard working, and loving of all volunteers and staffs. Thank you so much for taking such a good care of all animals who needed care most. you are the best!
This is where I got my dog and the whole experience was very nice. The staff was very helpful, the facility is clean and plenty of room to walk around. You are free to walk any dog to find your match.
These are the tipped ear people. They fix stray cats, give them all the shots and let them go with their ear cut.
