I got both of my pups from here and both adoptions...
I got both of my pups from here and both adoptions went so smoothly. I am so thankful for all the volunteers who give up their time to help these pets find furever homes :)

I went to get a companion for my dog. I wasn't even allowed in the building. An extremely rude older woman(didn't get her name) stopped me & said I couldn't bring my dog inside. I explained why I was there & she said someone would have to watch my dog while I walked through looking for a companion. I asked if there was someone there that could watch him, she said no. Then I asked if there was a room he could wait in while I looked & she said no. So I asked if there was anything else I could do & she said I couldn't bring in my dog. She didn't even try to assist me. Because of her I'm still looking for a companion for my dog. I need him to meet them before I take a random dog home & then they don't get along. That's why I brought him to begin with. It makes me sad & I wonder how she treats the animals there.
Clean, well played out shelter. The animals have indoor/outdoor spaces. You can bring the animals into a neutral environment to interact with them. Some dogs have leashes to take for walks. There are bunnies, kitties and dogs of all ages.
These people really care about the animals housed here and are really dedicated to finding good homes for them
I love the facility. The people are great. I have gotten all my animals from there.
Had to drop off a dog I Rescued. The staff made the process very easy. Very friendly and helpful. The puppy I rescued was in rough shape but the the staff assured me that they were going to get the dog in heathly shape so they can find is home. It just made my day!
Great staff the place is filled with compassion for animals
I absolutely love this shelter! They have the cleanest facility. I went to many shelters before I came here, they were super friendly and there was a place you could go to meet with your dog while your paperwork was getting started. I got a super healthy, sweet doggy and I couldn't be happier. Definitely recommend! They also have name your own price weekends as well.
My good dog is from Austin Animal Center and I volunteer there because I just love what they do for our community pets. Shelter's are never ideal, but AAC has extraordinary outcomes for pets in their care and the community is very involved. It is a great place to volunteer. You'll love the animals and the people. It is also one of the best places to get a new furry family member.
I've lived all over the U.S. & have never found a better place. They LOVE animals & they are a no kill shelter.
We found a dog in our neighborhood and tried to locate the owner but couldn't. We took her to our local vet to see if she was chipped with no success. We ended up taking him to Austin animal center which is an amazing resource for pets. They are the largest no kill animal shelter in the world. They taken many animals A-day and are excellent at what they do.
Went there, looked at several animals. Then I was able to adopt the perfect puppy. A female pit bull mix. The perfect match for me in my opinion.
I've been trying to adopt a pet for a while now but my wife won't allow me cause we live in a small apartment. This place though has a lot of staff willing to help you get exactly what you need.
Nicest animal center I have ever seen and great that it s a no kill shelter. Always plenty of awesome dogs and cats to adopt.
I love this place because the people treated us very well and we adopted are puppy star
Sad to see so many dogs needing homes. Sad that so many are pitbulls.
The AAC is a wonder center where the public can interact with the animals and adopt a pet in most need of a home this center provides many services to the public for there animals as well as the strays
Most of the dogs seemed sick and the place was a mess.
They don t allow their workers to advocate and help increase the chances of their animals getting adopted. You re doing a disservice to your animals!!
Because I adopt the dog from their and they're very friendly stuff and they help you for everything what you looking what size pet you looking everything.
Absolutely love this place! We came all the way from Guadalupe County to adopt. The animals are all well cared for, fully vetted, and the facility is well maintained. The staff and volunteers are so helpful, offering advice and information on breeds as well as individual animals.
We love the website, too. It let us preview ALL of the animals available, even the ones in fosterhomes.
Our Ava ( dog) came home neutered, and up to date on vaccines, with her heartworm and flea prevention, as well.
ASK ABOUT ADOPTION SPECIALS!
The attention of the people who collaborate in this place is very pleasant
I love this place; they allow you to interact with the pets and it's a great no pressure atmosphere!
My daughter just adopted a Stafford shire from here and I must say the process was delt with professionalism and smooth procedure. Very organized. The reason for the four stars is that I feel that the sick animals should be blocked from site so that they are not stressed even more. I really love this dog!!
Came to drop off a couple dogs I found by highway doing a favor as well the pups.. the lady in the office where you bring lost animals was very very rude threaded me with cameras and I'll be prosecuted for an abandonment of animals. All because this lady I will turn my head next time rather then take time out of my own day to help then to be talked to like that all because my lunch break was almost up... sorry to future pups I won't be able to help do to this lady making it a horrible experience
They are very hard to deal with and never answer the phone. I know that it can be stressful and busy but there has got to be a more effective way of dealing with the public. They DO NOT take back the pets they have adopted unless someone schedules an appointment and by that time, the people have already dumped the dog or taken it to another shelter as a "stray" which further burdens other shelters. They are an open intake facility, which means they cannot turn anyone away that lives within their jurisdiction (Travis county). This means that if someone needs to surrender their pets and they live in Austin, the shelter MUST accept the animal. This means that is someone finds a stray inside of Travis County, they MUST accept the animal. They cannot simply close their doors or say they "are not accepting animals at this time." We all want to be "no kill" but it is not possible with the overpopulation problem and turning people away does not help! You cannot pick and choose what you bring into your facility! When I finally get to meet with a person face-to-face, they were rude and abrasive. When leaving a message on their voicemail (after having to press a million different buttons on the phone and waiting for hours for someone to answer) they never get back to you on the same day no matter how urgent your situation. If I could rate them a 0, I would.
Great, caring people. You can tell that they love the animals that they are caring for.
What they do here is amazing. There are so many loving people here for these animals and the service is great for how busy it can get. I adopted from here a couple of years ago and it went through easily and I took my big boy home.
they took care of my boy. so glad they found him. but lets stop charging people to get there dogs back
Super clean, friendly, you get to play and walk the animals there if they have a green sticker. And they have honest info on the animals history and current health
This is one of the nicest shelters in the Austin area. They have renovated it and I see people who work here taking the time to really walk and care about the animals. From what I can tell the adoption process is also one of the more fair and 'easy' going. The downside (that is limited in their control) is their variety of dogs. I would love to take a pit bull home but it is against the rules of where I live.
The staff is very professional and polite. I really appreciate how they cared for my fur baby Maya.
I've only been to this place once to learn about volunteering. It interferes with my schedule so I'm unable to. I recently was given a dog by a resident that found him. He turned him over to me and I had no choice but to turn him over to the Animal Shelter. I felt horrible for doing this. I was approved for an ESA and decided to go back and get the dog I surrendered to them. I learned the same day that he was adopted. Kind of bitter sweet. I really wanted him. So I decided to look around at other dogs and found one that resembled my 1st dog I had to sadly give away due to circumstances. I couldn't resist. I chose him and was given a sticker to place on his kennel. ADOPTED!!! This is a no-kill shelter. The people there work endless hours to help, feed, walk, nurture these poor animals that just want to be loved. Great place to find a rescue animal. These animals really need a loving home and the people there are angels to the animals that need tender love. I love my new rescue emotional support animal.
We are both handicapped I was pushing my roommates wheelchair studying the small animals in the front of me every time we picked an animal they had some petty reason that animals could not go home
The staff was really nice, and we got a new friend!
Very clean kennels, sweet staff and really helpful with questions you ask them. The staff really care about the animals
They took care of my dog when it ran away. Such a nice act. And to not be charged for the care is pretty unheard of in this capitalistic society. 5 paws all the way up
AAC is such a great facility! Such an upgrade from the old TLAC. The state of the art building has suck a warm inviting appeal. For a shelter the cleanliness is amazing. I have worked with rescues for years, and the smell isn't easy to get rid of, but everytime I go to AAC they are always cleaning and working hard to keep it new and fresh. :) The staff is so helpful and always friendly. The animals seem much happier than I have seen at other sites. Honestly 2 paws up for AAC! :)
These folks do so much to help defenseless animals in Austin. Please consider donating to them, adopting a pet from them, or volunteering for them!
It's great to see that there are many people worrying about animals.
Have rescued two different dogs from them! Six years apart and I remembered I wanted to go back to them for a pup! They do a really good job of having foster parents that go above and beyond to make sure the pups got to a loving home and made the experience very memorable!
They let us post our missing cat poster inside and have been very helpful in the process of getting closure. Also I love the facility, the staff is very friendly and you can play with the animals easily. I wish I didn't live in an apartment right now, or I'd adopt them all. I'd definitely reccomend this place if you're looking for a pet, and trust that you're getting them from a good establishment.
Workers are helpful always in a cheerful mood. But they dont sell puppies so 3 stars for me.
All of those beautiful animals broke my heart. So much I adopted one
We got our newest family member at AAC about a week ago. There were (sadly) lots of dogs to choose from, and we were able to visit with several before choosing the best fit for us. All of the dogs have their basic information posted, and there was even more information available from the very helpful volunteers. Our girl had notes that she *might* be housebroken and had trouble with other dogs, but we haven't had problems with either, so I think they may be a little conservative in assessing the dogs. Don't let labels or certain breeds scare you away!
We had a great experience adopting our boy Murphy from AAC. They helped us coordinate a visit with the foster of the dog we were interested in. When we decided to move forward with adopting him it was a quick and efficient process. We were able to bring him home the next day! Because of COVID his adoption fee was even waived. He is such a sweetheart and we couldn t love him more! Highly recommend adopting an adult dog. It was nice to skip right to the good stuff and not have to worry about house training and whatnot.
It was nice but doesn't have very many small dog plenty of cat and kittens
I appreciate the staff there for their efforts in helping the animals that come through there and their customer service. I wish that more care was taken when entering pets into their system as some do not contain pictures and are missing the picture of the animal or a picture from a earlier visit or when first adopted is used and not a current one. That information is important when a owner is looking for their lost pet.
Good people doing wonderful things for our community.
We adopted a pupper! I love him so much even though he won't let me play the piano
Love my pups that Ive adopted (all three)and love coming here. Staff is friendly and informative and there is always a vast selection of fur babies that need loving.
Nice big place however I went to give a stray dog we found to them an they keep the doors locked an tell you to fill out a paper an sit outside. I waited for 1hr just for them to take the dog. That was ridiculous .
Friendly, honest and professional staff. I knew which kitten I was interested in so the entire process was less than 1 hour. There are so many unwanted animals there; it's heartbreaking.
Everyone was super friendly- the dogs are clearly loved by the staff!
When I went to go pick up my first child the Animal Center was very helpful with providing me with places to go and physical things that I would need for him in our long journey of life I am blessed to see that there are people that are still willing to help out the animals in the animal community and are willing to reach out and bring awareness to pet owners on how to control their pets more effectively without using violence they deserve all the credit that they're not getting right now
They have a good selection of pups and grown dogs to choose from
Great place that cares about animals ....adopt and be a hero ...save a life
They lie about being no-kill, there is no phone number to get ahold of them if you're trying to check on a dog that you dropped off, they're generally overworked and rude if you are trying to drop off a dog you found and you have to talk to horrible 311 to get through to them.
Super packed
The elderly lady at the door has a huge attitude problem
This was a great experience! The young lady that was helping us gave us information on the dogs that we were considering. she helped us narrow down our search based on what we needed as a family. Once we did our Meet and Greet with our "Daisy" we knew she was going to fit right in. She still needed to be spayed, so that was scheduled for the next day, and then we were able to pick her up. They were very honest about her condition when she was brought in, so we knew that she would be needing some extra TLC. Thank you Austin Animal Center!
Great facilities. Helpful staff and volunteers. Process is a bit confusing (need better signage for the adoption coordinator area) but overall amazing experience!
