Was not happy as I drove all the way from Houston to rescue a dog after talking with shelter and they knew I would be there, told me what time to be there, even got there early, and then told me someone else applied for dog.

As shelters go this place is pretty nice. Lots of volunteers ready to help and the FurFaces all seem to be doing ok considering where they are. All the dogs we saw were clean and in good living conditions. We brought home Stella.

I got my new forever son dog through AAC after looking online at all the dogs from many shelters and found Maxx's picture and was hooked. I filled out the visitor paperwork online and sent an email and after calling to see if I could get the contact information for the foster parent he was living with and found out that I would have to wait for email response or make the drive to the center to get the information. I didn't want to miss my chance to get Maxx so I made the drive to the center and got the contact information I needed to meet Maxx and foster mom. Luckily the meet and greet went well and the adoption happened. After a month I have no regrets except that I couldn't adopt more. I recommend if you're planning on getting a new pet to check out the shelters first they're so over crowded and it's not only cats and dogs they take in animals and they need good homes. This is my family's 2nd adoption through AAC and although there was some confusion about the process because he was in foster care and the center is so overwhelmed, I would totally do it again.

I've volunteered at Austin Animal Center for ten years as a dog walker, and highly recommend it if you're looking for a way to stay in shape, contribute to the community, and meet precious pups. I also foster kittens for the shelter, which is a great way to help AAC handle the influx of baby felines in the spring and summer. Austin is lucky to have such a well-managed city shelter.

The staff was amazing and gave us a lot of info regarding our rescue. They also were able to donate a big bag of food for us. Our donations and contribution help the facility in a tremendous way.

We adopted a pitbull and asked beforehand if she was healthy to which their reply was yes asked if she had any contagious infections to which was answered no. Well come to find out none of that was true. After almost two weeks of having Nala my chiweenie Onyx got sick with kennel cough. Onyx has been very healthy up to the time we brought Nala home.

My dog baby had to be quarantined after Christmas break for a couple days. Everyone was so nice and caring quarantine fees were reasonable especially being around the holidays and we also had him chipped for free.

I went here to turn in a lost dog. The staff was friendly. They gave me the option of being contacted if the owner didn't pick up the dog within a certain time frame. I was given a card with the ID number. The dog was reunited with its owner.

The staff were friendly and answered all of my questions. The volunteers were friendly as well and they all seem to really care about the animals in their charge. When I'm ready to adopt after a little more research i will definitely return.

I am a volunteer at the shelter and see it from the inside day after day. It is well run and the animals are well cared for. It is amazing what this staff accomplishes and Austin has a lot to be proud of. There are so many wonderful dogs and cats ready for new homes and the shelter has worked to streamline the adoption process. Two big thumbs up!

It's very spacious, all big dogs look very well taken care of, all the things you can do here are pretty cool, like walking a dog to see if you actually match up. I love how this place is set up all around good experience.

Loved it! We were able to pick out and adopt the perfect dog for us! The place is very organized and is maintained properly. There is enough enclosed areas where you can interact with the dog & play. Information was available and staff / volunteers were friendly. You can call a number to be in line for an adoption counselor / staff member. They let you know how long the current wait time is, and how many people are ahead of you in line. You then get a call when they are ready so you can come up front.

The small dog and cat areas are indoors, the glass walls are nice so you can see the animal without having to take them out of the cage. All of them had info out (like how old, whether it was owner surrendered, how heavy, heartworm neg/pos) The animal turnover for small dogs seem to be pretty fast. The large & medium dogs have their information on the outside of the kennel so you know whether you can approach it or need some help if it has behavior issues. Cats and small animals had their own building. They have an off-leash area for small dogs too, if you wanted to meet with them.

Couldn't be happier about our new family member. They do have an adoption application and ask you a few questions to see if you would be a good fit, and I notice they keep an eye out when you first bring out the dog for a walk. (Probably to see if the dog will have behavior issues or see if you are being appropriate with the dog) All of our questions were answered and I'm glad the animals we checked out were well cared for and it looked like staff were doing their best. You might have to visit more than one time to find your perfect companion, and of course the outdoor kennels did have a smell. Check out this place if you are looking for a new companion / pet!

My roommate got a dog here. There were a lot of dogs in small cages and some of the kennels were really loud. I know that they are working with a lot of animals, but I can't give more stars when I left feeling bad for so many of the dogs. But our dog is great. She had behavior and had been returned before but she's a complete sweetheart with us

Booking an appointment was a breeze. The facility was very clean and organized. The staff very friendly and helpful. The Covid-19 safety precautions are great. Tons of dogs, but not many cats in shelter. Overall a great experience.

I wish I could give this place a 0. They allowed my 9 year old son to see a shepherd mix puppy and told he the employee instantly he wanted it. She told him she needed the dog kennel number to fill out the paperwork. She explained the puppy could be neutered and ready to go on New Years Eve. In the time it took him to excitedly run to get the number and bring it back to her, she adopted the puppy out to the next man in line. DISGUSTING. This shelter broke a little boys heart 2 days after Christmas. There was no explanation, no empathy and no willingness to try and help fix the situation. If the oh well attitude is what you re looking for, you have found the right place!

If I could I would give this center less than one ...

If I could I would give this center less than one star, I'm outraged! I was forced to put my dog into rabies quarantine for nipping at a police officer after my house was broken into. There was no blood shed and barely a bite mark, it was just a small bruise. The police officer walked straight into my yard without any concern of the animals, and being that someone had just attempted a burglary my pup was still nervous and saw him as a perpetrator.

I dropped him off at Austin Animal Center for his 11 day quarantine. They did give me a sheet that said at the bottom in tiny font that they're not responsible for any disease or illness my dog might contract during quarantine. I didn't think anything of it because i assumed such a place with so many animals was responsible enough to keep a clean, sanitary environment. I was soooo wrong.

When I picked my dog up, he was coughing and I didn't assume anything of it because I figured he just had something in the back of his throat. But as it continued I began to get worried. It wasn't just a regular cough, it was violent and he was vomiting a little bit at the end. It turns out it was bordetella, kennel cough!

It would've been one thing if the animal center had advised me to get this vaccine before dropping him off to quarantine, but they didn't say a word. They didn't even point out that he was subject to disease or illnesses like it said on the paper! They just quietly stowed him away and told me how much I was going to owe at the end of the 11 days.

What bothers me is that I now had to pay for the 11 day quarantine and then a vet fee after I trusted these people with my dog! Let me reiterate the fact that they should've verbally warned me about the risks, and asked if I wanted to vaccinate him for bordetella again before he was quarantined!!!

I am so frustrated with the service of this place. I understand that the quarantine was mandatory, but there should've been more warning before I left my dog in a cesspool.

Be advised! If at all possible do not quarantine or kennel your dog here! These people are shiesty!

I spent all day Sunday meeting different dogs. It is so important to get the best match. The staff here are amazing. Patiently working with me. I adopted a beautiful brindle female. She may be a different dog than I envisioned, but SHE IS PERFECT! I got the best dog for me and my old Maltese.
Family friendly. Wheelchair access. Cats, dofs dogs and bunnies!

If you enjoy mind-numbing bureaucratic inefficiency and have unlimited free time, this is definitely the place to try and adopt a needy animal. In fact you can stretch it out to a full day if you go on the website first and pick out the dogs you want to see beforehand. Once you get to the shelter you will find that all of them are unavailable for one reason or another and will be invited to pick out an alternative. Spend an hour or so walking around the cages and choose a perfect pet, then take them for a walk and some bonding. To adopt your pet, get in line (via 'high tech' cellphone alert that is no better than tearing a number from a paper roll) and wait. And wait. And wait. Until just two people call you over and attempt to fill in forms, take fees, engrave dog tags, outline feeding plans etc AND go back to the kennels to fetch dogs one by one. If you're unlucky, as I have been several times you can even wait 2 hours to find the animal you have chosen has already been adopted and put back in its cage by mistake. To be fair, care of all the animals at the shelter is exemplary. Volunteers are kind, dogs clearly relaxed and cages are scrupulously clean. It is the administration which needs a good scrubbing.

They were very understanding of our sorrow of us losing our puppy. The lady spoke to me kindly and she was able to help me set up an appointment to see if the puppy was ours. Unfortunately no. But, the puppy probably got adopted the next day because he was no Lome on the site. He was adorable.

Love what they do, facility is great. Long wait times at times, it helps to go during off hours. Often get incorrect info on animals I call ahead on, just go in person and talk to them. They have so many animals to process and do what they can. Always take your new pet to a vet!

So valentine's is around the corner. And my wife who is amazing has already gotten flowers a new ring and some chocolates. And she has been wanting another dog so when I saw that the center was doing free adoptions I picked up my wife from work and took her there she fell in love with a pit bull the exact color and age she wanted. Thanks to the staff and volunteers who helped. Every time we come to adopt they are always friendly and helpful. So thanks again for helping me make this valentine's special for the both of us.

I'm very sad to have to post this review after always recommending AAC to clients. I'm a veterinarian technician at a local animal hospital who recently had an owner surrender their overweight 12 year old cat in leau of euthanizing it since the doctors felt she was not a candidate for this. I told her I could reach out to AAC and ask for help, seeing as I would cover medical expenses to deal with her current uti and weight loss. When I called AAC to discuss options they used the exact words "you should euthanize her. " And tried to explain that response with "well cats just don't do well in shelters". I understand this as I have spent a few years working at a shelter prior to being a tech, but I also know this cat has a good chance at finding a home due to her amazing personality and laid back demeanor. I also understand that we are in a pandemic with covid but at what point is it okay for a "No kill" shelter to tell me to kill a cat that is not medically ready? And at what point and age is a cat no longer of importance to enjoying thier life.

Adopt don't shop!! Austin Animal Center is an excellent no kill shelter, associated with Emancipet, which is a great low cost vert service. The volunteers are incredibly helpful. If you have any questions about an animal up for adoption, they do their best to help you out. The facilities are really nice - you can take the dogs out for a walk and then into meet and greet areas.
If you are looking to adopt a dog, cat, or rabbit, Austin Animal Shelter is a great please to check. They have a lot of animals that are in need of love and a family!!
