The population of stray and discarded animals(cats and dogs) in Del Valle (Elroy) Texas is overwhelming. It is not just discarded animals, it also unfortunately includes animals that owners neglect and let run free. The owners do not spay or neuter thier animals. My husband and I have used the services of Austin Animal Services for many years. To show our appreciation I am starting a fund raiser on Facebook for my birthday donations to go to Austin Animal Center 7201 Lavender Loop Bldg A Austin TX
78702. The donations are in Honor of Ann Elizabeth Hoffman (Jim deceased mother) and Reese R. Davis (My deceased brother). You Can go to abbewelchko@Facebook.com or donate directly to Austin Animal Center. We thank you in these trying times of Covid19 9/10/20
Sincerely Mrs. James K. Welchko

Oh how can you go in and see all of the animals that needs a new home and choose just one. Unfortunately I didn't go home with a new fur baby as she was adopted before I had the chance to interact with her so it was a good deal for the family.
The shelter is large and clean and everyone was very friendly and they took the time to really speak to you. I will be going back one day soon.
I am so glad that this shelter takes in these animals and are not a kill shelter. If your looking to add some joy to your life and provide a loving home and family to a pet, check this shelter out.

We got our dog from here 2 years ago and he has changed our lives for the better! They gave us all the information we needed on him and answered all of our questions. They let us meet with each potential dog before we decided. They also had him neutered and chipped before I left with him. We're currently looking for a second dog at this place too.

This place is great! Given what this country is going through with the pandemic, we were given an hour long appointment to view the animals we were interested in. I think that they should put more information about the animals on the website. I say this because of the 4 animals we were interested in three of them had behavior issues which was not mentioned under the dogs profile on their site. However, we did find our first choice and she will be joining our family!! I recommend that you write down the animals you are interested in and walk in with your choices. It makes the adoption process go much faster and easier for all parties.

Everything is BIG in Texas! This place is not only the biggest animal shelter I've ever been to, it sets itself apart from the rest by the cleanliness and the caring nature of the staff and volunteers. Come and find your animal companion today!

What else is there to say. This is the animal shelter and it needs help from everyone and the community. They do there best at a very large scale to try to help and rescue the animals that get here. It is not easy to run this size of an operation. They are always busy with floods of people and employees running around to help. Any time that u can try to help them by fostering a dog until it gets adopted. They do there best to continue to be a no-kill shelter and we should always fight to make sure that they stay that way.

Not the fastest intake process.... actually quite slow. And you are left to wait outside in the heat or weather while they push their papers and whatever. But they are polite, and they have cold water with plastic cups or bowls outside for those waiting to bring in a found stray.

I didnt have much interaction really. What they do seems awesome, However , how they do that is somewhat a mystery to me.

How to get to the facility to drop off donations and that process left me feeling frustrated and still out of the loop and wondering how it all works. Other than that I am looking forward to trying again and maybe meeting some people there

I love this place. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The animals are well taken care of and the areas are clean. I lived in Dallas at the time but I was visiting for my birthday and we fell in love with a pup named Karina, she had a limp leg and was having surgery the following week. We knew we wanted her and the staff was very helpful through the whole process with keeping us updated after the surgery and letting us know when we could make the drive to pick her up. I used to work for an animal clinic and just to see them keep up with us through this whole process was amazing considering how many animals they have under their care.

Great place for animals in need, they do care about pets life, kennels were clean and somehow comfy, lot of pets waiting for families and/or fosters, so they need our help for that, friendly staff by the way.

We took in a cat that was dumped because she was pregnant, she was too far along for us to consciously terminate the pregnancy and she ended up giving birth to 5 adorable kittens. We kept them together until the kittens were 10 weeks old then surrendered the kittens to Austin Animal Center. I love that they don't euthanize for time or space, only for a severe medical condition that would make a good quality of life impossible. I wouldn't have surrendered the kittens otherwise. It's good to know that the kittens will receive the medical care I couldn't afford and be adopted out to loving homes. The services they provide are so vital and important for the animals.

While being there in working hours, Lily was not helpful to walk us through the process, kept it us staying till pass working hours, then she claims that she didn't hear us saying we are ready to adopt as application was filled and ready too, they said things like miss-communication! You better have an accent they understand maybe! Or they might want not give puppy's for their own reason! Zero customer service! Total waste of time!

Well organized, clean, and friendly. One of the best of its kind I've ever been to - being able to visit with animals deemed safe enough to do so without supervision was stress-free and allowed for healthier opportunities for getting to know potential pets. Love it here!

So, everyone is talking about how ABC claiming to be a no - kill shelter is a lie. It isn't a lie. No kill only means that animals are not euthanized unless they are considered to be dangerous or the shelter is at capacity, at which point they only euthanize animals that are terminally ill. Granted, the shelter environment isn't the best to judge an animal's temperament, but they do the best with what they have.

We adopted our dog, a pit-bull and a big baby, and are so VERY happy with her!! We accidently went on a promotion day which was a $5 adoption day. Didn't have to undergo a lot of hassle or interrogation to be able to adopt. The people here are awesome! Our new dog (1 1/2 yrs.old) is the most perfect addition to our family!! So glad we went here!

Clean shelter with plenty of open area for dogs to play. I adopted my dog from here three months ago and I love her dearly. No problems with her and the staff provided excellent customer service by helping me find a dog that catered to my needs. Highly recommended.

The facility is huge and there is plenty of staff/volunteers around to help. They have it set up where you can take dogs out on your own if they're ready whicb is great without having to bother the staff. We spent a while searching the facility and narrowed down to a young 6 month old pitbull. We were even allowed to do a meet and greet with my current dog. The lady i believe her name was nicole was great from the moment we stepped in the door.

These folks were so kind and nice. Make sure to set an appointment...and adopt, adopt, adopt, your next pet. You can go online to see which animals are adoptable. Took a while to get in but they were great about everything!

We loved how friendly and knowledgeable the staff there are and the humane way they treat the animals. Many dogs to chose from and We found our wonderful stray dog, which seemed to have a tough past but turns out extremely sweet. Strongly recommend adoption here instead of buying. You can help save a dogs life. This is one of our favorite place to donate for a great cause.

Adopted out a dog to my child that was heart worm ...

Adopted out a dog to my child that was heart worm positive. But did not reveal to him that dog was still positive. Sent him off with heartworm prevention and flea prevention Did not give a voucher for injection treatment later at Emancipet only a voucher to get 3 more months of heartworm prevention and a general price list and location info for Emancipet. Records indicated the dog was underweight and neutered. Dog had severe socialization issues but records didn t indicate severity nor a preference to women over men. Tried to surrender dog back initially after a few months because it seemed to have mental issues that might turn aggressive. They refused to send an animal control officer or allow it to be surrendered. Tried to surrender dog two more times and was told earliest they could help was a month to six weeks away.
While we have had to hand feed this dog and use another pet to socialize it and have tried to get weight on him We have given medications
He is friendlier and has just started barking after several months. He has been a work in progress. Austin Animal Shelter never did follow up phone calls or emails after adoption.
They were not forthright in the condition of the dogs health and mental state. They did not give a complete history to a local vet when asked.
(Original paperwork was lost in our moves)
If you get an animal from here you are spinning a huge wheel of uncertainty. You will not be told how it came to the shelter and you will not be told that if the dog is heartworm positive they will not have given it the antibiotics and injections it needs to make a full recovery which this takes 9 months of care and they have to be retested. They will not give them very many shots. If the dog is really social and friendly and has previous records they send it to Town Lake location to be bought by a dog customer.
A lot of money is often donated to this shelter -from individuals, groups, and corporations. Not to mention the monetary value of Vets and volunteers who give their time to this shelter.
It is shameful for a city shelter to send out heartworm positive dogs and not let the public know that they do it as practice in order to turn more dogs.
You want to donate money to a animal shelter?
Donate to Emancipet who has to do follow up care or donate to a local vet who goes to these places. Mark your donations specifically for medical care of animals.
If your a pet owner spay and neuter your pets and pick up their poop -disease spreads real quick from animal feces and mosquitoes. Get them vaccinated.

I wish I could give this place a 0 star! Because that is what the staff at the intake place deserve. I found a stray the other day and took it to this animal center. They NEVER answer calls! So I would both trying to call these people. Once, I got tired of no answer, I made an appearance in person. Once you open the door they staff was rude. Specially if you are crunched for time, so If you plan to drop off a stray before work, go hourses before hand or call in because they make it a long and difficult process. It makes me wonder if they treat people this badly, do they even take good care of the animals behinds close doors.

This shelter is full of hardworking staff and volunteers, all doing their best to keep Austin a "No-kill" city. The new shelter is a great update to the old TLAC space, with lots of natural light. Most all the animals are visible to the public, so it's easy to find a pet to fall in love with. And if you're not able to make a long term commitment to an animal, check out their foster and volunteer programs. I volunteer here and love it.

Omg please donate money or something. The people here are so nice and the puppies and kitties are the cutest. They are no kill and I got my dog there. They also have bunnies, occasionally ferrets (yes, I know, weird) and they are all sooo sweet!

For the most part, the staff is always on top of what is best for the animals. Unfortunately, I have been in many positions here where I see other guests not necessarily being on their 'best behavior' and it really makes me uncomfortable. I am amazed and appreciate everything they do, but I really hope they notice how often the general public with lack of education on animals have access to affect these animals, their comfort, and we'll being. Some kids don't know any better, some adults do and just don't care - I would love to see a peak in EDUCATED volunteers that don't do things like drop a whole bag of treats on the ground in front of a cracked kennel door with two dogs, while another volunteer hands a 90lbs dog to a disabled woman to walk, who happens to resource guard food. Small mistakes like this, could lead to big accidents.the staff does an amazing job, I would hate for lack of education in guests/some volunteers to affect the animals negatively. Keep up the good work, save these lives!

I just moved to Austin and lost my boy. Found him here, the process was quick and easy and the staff were so helping and polite. They also microchip him for free. Thank you so much for taking care of my Manny.

There are alot of pitbulls and Staffordshires...not what I was looking for. Still, I really question how much work they do to find out the behaviors of the animals, I saw a number of dog-aggressive dogs in the facility while there for an hour.

I brought in a stray dog just after closing time, but they were very helpful, do not turn me away, and make sure that dog got the attention and care she deserved. Thank you Austin Animal Center for doing such amazing things for the creatures of our city.

Really well kept facility. The dogs all have an inside and an outside part of their kennels, and the staff rotates the dogs based on who doesn't get along with who. The adoption process was also really simple and they were honest with me about some of my new dog's issues.

I would like to give 7 stars for AAC for helping me out with my previous GSD.
The process was very easy to surround the dog to them, just filled out the application & dropped it with the dog.

I have mixed emotions

I have mixed emotions
The building itself is light years better than the old animal center. I have issues with a No Kill program that achieves No Kill status by putting policies in place that lead to rushed adoptions. Basically be sober enough to fill out an application and you can walk out with any animal. No verifying. No trying to match thahhe pet to the home. Deferred surrender has led to animals being dumped out in the County. Austin isn't a No Kill city. Its a slow kill program where it's Ok if cats and dogs die inhumane deaths as long as they don't die in the shelter. No Kill in Austin sounds great untill you look behind the curtains.
