Seeing Van Gogh's artworks (sans Starry Starry Night) is surreal. Also enjoyed this place with our 5yo kid who answered their Van Gogh Treasure Hunt booklet --- literally learning through play.

It was quite an experience to see a famous artist's art pieces on display for people around the world to see. The only issue was going up 4 floors using the stairs. It would have been helpful if escalators were installed instead of stairways.
Really busy especially after lunch so you mostly have to wait a bit to get in and to get to look at the paintings. If you're patient that shouldn't be a problem.
Really loved the artwork it was amazing and definitely worth the wait!
Beautiful museum with a very interesting life of van Gogh. If you are art lover, you will enjoy it a lot. Only problem is that it's quite touristy, many peoples, crowded.
It's a must visit for VAN GOGH art fans!!! 2 to 3 hours going around in the museum with a full of excitements, joy and happiness. Will definitely revisit this national treasure
Frustrating complicated layout. 1970s building that has a modern extension which doesn't help. More difficult than it should be to visit. Incredibly busy and you need to book. Worth it all though to see the master.
The museum is modern and beautiful. Even when it's crowded, it is very organized.
Really enjoyed it and the audio guide was excellent too.
I dont even do art galleries. But now I do.
Kinda top notch.
The art and layout are good. The audio tour was difficult to follow and didn't provide a map or directions to paintings on the "highlights" tour. The audio guide at the Rijksmuseum was much better.
The way the paitings are illuminated is horrible. Spotlights are used as direct light. So I could only see the reflection of the spotlights on the paintings. The collection was nice, but the lighting was disappointing.
Visiting Van Gogh museum was one of the main reasons for traveling to Amsterdam and it was worth it. Everything was good, except constant roar of little kids what did not allow to fully enjoy the art. We are grateful that it was possible to leave outdoor dress and luggage in the storage downstairs; perhaps, it may be useful to have some room, where those parents not willing (or not able to afford) nannies, could leave their little kids before visiting the exhibition? I believe, many visitors would appreciate a bit more silence while looking at artworks.
There is so much information here about Van gogh's life and relationships that I wasn't expecting. It is so cool getting to see his progression and artistic development laid out over time within the museum. If you're a fan, I would definitely recommend!
Museum in a very old style. Dark, almost zero interactive parts. It was nice to see Van Gogh on live, but for that amount of money I expect a bit more effort from the museum to present exposition.
Building is pretty impressive (architecturally) but inside you can see only few paintings.
Definitely overpriced. If you are not a big fan of art you can get bored inside.
Very enjoyable although a part of the Museum was closed off and some of the best paintings were in New York
Recommended!
Buy online ticket is much more convenience.
Professional management. Really well planned layout.
The exhibition is very good! But museum was super crowded and everything is so expensive, adult ticket itself is already 18 euros, plus audio guide if you want and they won't even let you photograph the museum. Either you take notes of names or cool paintings you want to see again later or you buy the book at the store haha. Extra: Bill Clinton showed up and made everyone happy and so nobody cared about the gallery anymore and you could see things easier! Night visit might be emptier.
One of my favorite museums. Grab the headphones and experience Van Gogh life. Get your tickets online in advance. Automatic stairs and elevators and lots of stuff at their store. The building is three floors and you can enjoy it in approximately one hour.
This was a truly amazing museum! Well done AMSTERDAM!!
Make sure you book online first, so you can miss the enormous queue outside which can be up to 2 hours long maybe more! Then you can head straight into the museum via the museum entrance, but have your tickets out at the door ready.
Once in, if you like art it's great, buy yourself a headset it's about 5 for a adult and 3 for a child.
The only reason it's not a 5 star for me is because I'm not the biggest fan of art and started to get bored so rushed the last 2 floors.
I don't enjoy art. I don't get it. But this was accessible and very enjoyable. Recommended. Worth the money.
Great audio guide. Really felt like we were getting to know Van Gogh through his work.
Despite a large coat check area, the Museum turns away visitors with luggage (cabin luggage) leaving them with no alternative. The hotels in the area will also not hold the luggage for a quick visit. The unflexibility and lack of compasion baffles me.
The concept of the museum includes a digital guide, which is designed in a way that it takes a long while to click and dial on the screen to hear the whole story behind a painting, rendering you focused on the guide rather the ambience. Very user unfriendly.
Overall customer experience very low.
Self explanatory really, but a must for any lover of Van Gogh. The galleries are themed around times in the artist's life and even the wall paint serves to complement the mood of the art. There's a lot to take in here so having a couple of hours to persue is a good idea.
I can tell you at the time years ago after decorating one of my apartments with 8.5 x11 magazine prints in frame of his work, I hadn't thought I would see them in person with my own eyes. It was a sacred and humbling experience standing a foot away from the true multiple masterpieces of Vincent Van Gogh. I am still in awe of the experience, sing the detailed brush strokes, the vivid colors after such wonderful preservation I'm grateful to have shared the experience with my husband. If you have the chance, please go, you'll never forget it. Seeing the raw talent up close changes the way you look at any prints forever.
Must see for every one who likes impressionism. Great museum with excellent collection of Van Gogh paintings. Paintings of all stages of his life. The museum relatively small, you can cover it in couple of hours (of course depends on your pace). The Audio guide is OK.
Came on a Friday (last of the month), extremely busy. More people drinking, eating and partying than there for the art. The light was making it hard to see some of the art, people taking flash photos did so undisturbed by the staff. Pretty disappointing. Loud RnB music throughout the museum making it hard to enjoy. We bought regular tickets, were not aware there was a party going on. Love the art, the artist and the storytelling, but was almost impossible to see.
Wonderful museum about the oft tragic life and works of Van Gogh. The museum is sort of chronological but we started "backwards" on the top floor. I love the way they have implemented tech in their exhibits especially the one that shows what the painting looked like before it was restored. The only annoying thing were all the inconsiderate tourists blatantly ignoring the no photos rule so staff kept having to come yell at them. Don't take photos!
I loved the layout and detail of this treasure of a museum. Van Gogh has such an interesting and ultimately tragic story and the museum takes you in this journey through his sketches and paintings. Worth 2-3 hours of your time whenever you are in Amsterdam (we had a layover there). Be sue to reserve your time in advance. The museum was the highlight of our time there.
Excellent museum and collection of art. The museum has several key pieces of his artwork, but not all his masterpieces. The audio tour (which is an additional cost) is highly worth the extra money. It is interactive and gives you great insights into the unique life and artistic style of Van Gough.
Extensive and thorough exhibition of Van Gogh. Amazing to see these works for real an understand more about the man who painted them. When you book online, even if you select a time, you can arrive after that time. You won't be refused entry. If you have a rucksack, you will need to put it in the cloakroom, which is about 2.
Really beautiful experience!! Highly recommended and I d suggest you book an online ticket so you don t have to wait.
Busy but well worth a visit. If you get an early entry and don't mind starting at the end then head straight to floor 3 and work backwards.
Splendidly curated, can be made more visitor friendly by having resting places on each floor.
The museum has wide rooms and offers a lot of paintings. The first building has 3 floor, each one with a specific topic. The second one is more focused on the life of Vincent Van Gogh and recounts his life from the beginning to his death and the following years. The overall is a bit too long and can bore someone. Maybe removing the paintings not made by Van Gogh could help in this way.
There's no queue in front of the paintings, even for the most famous ones. Along the museum there are several cleaning hands stations.
If you like Van Gogh you will love this museum. It stays pretty busy so make sure you book tickets in advance so they don t sell out.
Nice to see the earliest pieces of Van Gogh's art to this very last piece and understand more about his life and thinking. No photos allowed in the exhibition. Try to book online and get the multimedia guide for a better experience
Amazing paintings. A must for culture based tourists in Amsterdam
Have a new found appreciation for Vincent Van Gogh after this visit.
I'm a huge fan of Van Gogh, so I might be a bit bias. The museum shows exactly how beautiful his artwork is and how talented he was. I wish they would bring the Starry Night because it should be here with the rest of his artwork, not in New York.
This museum is one of the most visited museums in the world but this does not mean that it is crowded. There is a system designed to drive traffic there are a limited number of tickets available on a particular day and spots sell out two-three days in advance. Each ticket has an exact entry hour (with 30 minutes delays allowed) with no specified exit time (google information: people spend roughly 1.5 hours per visit). The museum offers multimedia guiding device which I found very useful it helps you dive into the atmosphere straight away. The exhibition has 200+ paintings with some done by other painters.
Great work but way too many people and the museum staff and guards are very unfriendly. Firstly nobody told me that backpack is allowed and then halfway through my visit, he told me that and said I must carry on my hand. But when I looked around, all people are hanging bags on their shoulders. They blame the lack of information in their museum to their visitors. Also the no photo policy shouting by the staff is crazy. Either just make it strict not to bring camera in or just let people take. People kept taking photos anyways and it s hard to control. It s annoying to hear those shouts.
Vincent Van Gogh has been one of my favourite artists since my childhood. My first visit to the Van Gogh Museum back in 2015 was extremely emotional for me, I spent over 3 hours inside and only let because my mother told me to do so.
This museum is very complete, it's like a deep dive into Vincent's psyche. So many masterpieces, so many stories. Every time I visit Amsterdam I pop by the museum, it is such a wonderful experience. Their shops are also great with so many creative gifts and interesting books in various languages.
A must go while in Amsterdam. Give yourself about 2hrs to get the the 4 floors. Some of the best works are on the top floor.
Not as impressive as imagined, could be done better but still must see place
Very organized museum. I was pleased to see some of Van Gogh's finest paintings.
Amazing to walk through life of van Gogh in form of a story. Though disappointed that they don't have starry night in display. But other collection is good. You need to book tickets in advance and also book audio guide in advance.
Great museum, and the David Hockney exhibition is amazing. I'd recommend taking the multimedia guide, I found it enjoyable
A nice museum, I appreciate a lot the light works on the pictures, they respect a lot the pigments. You have a lots of nice pictures from van gogh, and the museum is just well and nice done, with elevators, well communicated in tramway, and bus and very close to the down town if you prefer to walk. So excellent place and excellent museum.
very interesting insights of his life and work, just very crowded of course which can make getting a proper look at everything a bit difficult but nonetheless a great visit (and wheelchair accessible thanks to elevators!)
The art is breathtaking so do go, explore all floors, and visit the gift shop. You can check-in your coat and big bags for free in the wardrobe. The restrooms are behind the gift shop, very clean. Every floor is accessible by elevator. It was slightly confusing whether photography is allowed or not. Naturally, no flash. However, some security personnel said no pictures at all (so no cell phone camera either) and others said just no flash and no big cameras. I saw many people using their cell phones though. There are two places to get some items: top and ground floor. The top floor is more quiet, smaller, but a good selection. There is a cafetaria inside the museum as well. Highly recommended!
The home of van Gogh, largest collection of self portraits can be found here. This is home to many of his famous works. It is three stories that chronologically date his work and growth as an artist, the audio tour is worth it as it helps narrate the tragic yet impressive story of van gogh's life and art career. On the other side of the museum there is usually a worthwhile temporary exhibit that will bring in other similar artists or inspired works. It is also worth the time and is often a two story tall exhibit. Prepare to be there for a while and it can be busy at times but totally worth. No photos allowed.
Awesome museum, love that the periods of his life arent just distinguished by different rooms, but also different floors of the museum.
I will warn: the security is VERY strict. If it says no photos, no photos! (Witnessed quite a scene between security and another visitor that snuck one on the top floor!)
So many great Van Gogh works as well as other artists. Of you're a fan of art in general you'll really appreciate this place.
Well designed and structured. It depicts Van Gogh life accurately within family and friends. I have been captured by the wonderful painting & admiring such a priceless piece of art.
Incredible experience, this museum is a must visit in Amsterdam
The museum has great masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh. Near that place, there are so many other meseums(MOCO, etc.) so it is very good to feel the art of Amsterdam.
The Van Gogh Museum is an excellent place to visit and enjoy the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. Obviously, Van Gogh's art is incredibly expensive, so they do not own all his pieces (no Dr Gachet, no Starry Night), but they have a lot of pieces and do an excellent job of describing his relationship with his brother and his inner torment. My favorite pieces of his work on display were The Potato Eaters and The Bedroom.
If you ever go to Amsterdam this is a must. Just ensure that you book ahead or purchase an I Amsterdam card, then you can book a time slot and jump the queue. Get there nice and early to avoid the crowds and leave yourself plenty of time. I was there for three hours.
Great exhibits, both permanent & temporary. Well done!
It is a nice trip through V. Van Gogh though the building is very big for such small amount of artworks. Some of the greatest and most famous paintings are not here...
No bags or coats (free storage). Book beforehand online. The Starry Night is at MOMA not here!!!.
Not crowds for me today! Lovely day. Is a very inclusive museum and has great stuff. The way everything is arranged is perfect and even without buying the guide you can get most of if.
Apparently 19 euros entrance tickets are not enough for buying enough paint to decently display that pictures are not allowed. (A sign of notebook size in a room as big as a basketball court in ground floor room for instance). Instead of improving an obviously unclear indication the rude staff prefer to yell on on everybody who takes a pictures without to know the rule (it happened four times in something like 5 minutes when I was in this very room.) You have this rule while it doesn't exist in most of other museums ? Fine but make it clear. Also guides they yell on people not being on guided group if they stay close from the painting when the group arrives. God worst museum ever so far.
Having see previous exhibitions and the great museum in Arle, I was disappointed not to get a more interesting and complete immersion in the art. This is a modern building dedicated to the art of one person, yet it failed to inspire either as a building or with the presentation of the incredible talent. I blame, overcrowded rooms and a superficial presentation focusing too much on sunflowers and technique, I think the story of his life and contemporaries has been missed. My visit sadly felt like a box ticking exercise and we were disappointed.
Note: no photos inside due to the museum protecting it's copy rights.
Well put together. Easy to navigate. Must visit if it's your only time in AMS.
The museum is interesting not only for arts but also for bibliography
Love it. Iconic. You have to go at least once. Van Gogh invented the selfie before it was popular. Also in winter you can go ice skating just beside the art gallery in museum Plein.
A land mark in Amsterdam.
A must see for every human being.
Wonderful collection and very well presented. Audio guide is also very good
Well run museum! Far better than what we saw in Paris. Outstanding display of his work. Easy to use headset.
We bought our tickets online from the museum before our trip.
A great experience, looking at the world of the man himself. Home to a few Picasso works too. It is great to see how proud the Dutch are of him and his legacy.
I would recommend this place to everyone, not just fans of art. The information supplied is comprehensive but easy to absorb. The queues are often long but it is definitely worth the wait.
Truly inspiring. Hard to not just stand in front of The Almond Blossom as long as possible.
It s a must visit place in Amsterdam and you will also want to rent the audio just to know more about the meaning of the painting and Van Gogh s life.
Well organized and full of art paints by Vincent Vangogh. I was so excited when watching perfect paints painted by real artist
One of the greatest collections of Van Gogh in the world. If you love impressionist art, this is for you. Located in the heart of the city, be prepared for long queues during weekends and high season. The museum layout is logical and there's a fantastic gift shop for bringing home Sunflowers or a Starry Night to hang on your own wall! With the Rijksmuseum located across the grassy square, it is an ideal place to spend a day immersed in culture.
Security Guards are racists and try to arrest people who look foreign and dangerous to them for no reason.
Yet they talk proudly about their multicultural city with their 175 nationalities they are still racists against foreigners.
WELL worth the time....
The new updated look and multilevel exhibits are great....from historical information to great art.
The better tip I can give is to buy the ticket with anticipation.
Really enjoyed my visit. Everything is very well organized. If you book online you get tickets in PDF or can just use kpass for your phone. Museum maps are available for free inside. For extra 5 you can get audio guide which gives you more in depth info. Otherwise all paintings have descriptions and extra details about Van Gogh life.
Photos are not allowed but it is possible to take few which is not worth it as there is not enough light for good quality.
Tickets are quite pricey but facility is well presented so it feels justified. There is wardrobe and bag storage which is optional but recommended as you will spend at least an hour walking around.
There are two gift shops inside which have Van Gogh style clothing, notepads, postcards and many small things.
Lovely place, both the decor and the art collection wise.
I went many years ago in 2001. It was an excellent. His paintings are so different to see in person than from a book. When there, they had on loan a Sunflower painting thats usually was housed in China
A must when you visit Amsterdam. Artwork from Van Gogh and others important painters.
