Tell the story and improvements for Vincent. Even though I didn t like him before, still enjoy the visiting it and start to like him
Great museum that includes alot of Van Goghs work along with some other artists work that are related to him in some way or another. They have an application that plays recordings describing the history of each painting. The most important thing to do if you want to go is to book tickets in advance because they don't sell them at the door and they sell out quickly.
I was undecided between 4 and 5 stars.
Collection is modest, but even for that it's worth to visit the museum.
Somehow, the fact of standing in front of Van Gogh's paintings was for me... moving.
Museum itself is another story. "Gallery" would be a better name.
I believe, that knowing Vincent's biography is essential to experience the exhibition. I'm quite familiar with it, so I did'n have to try to push through a massive amount of people to read what is written of the walls in dimmed/dark rooms, even though I understand why they did it.
What else - Van Gogh and Japan part is somehow hidden or not exposed to say the least, thus only a handful of people visiting. I found my favorite painting - "Vincent's bedroom" - there, but there was no information about that in the main exhibition where the painting used to hang.
Audio guide - it's just "NO". Both modes - leisure and fast - require a lot of interactions, thus guide is another distraction.
Would love in it if possible.
Great access too.
We all had a great time here. I really liked how it showed you works of art from a bunch of different dutch artists rather than just Van Gogh. Although you will not find his most famous works here, you will find plenty amazing pieces he created. The museum closes at 6 and we actually felt like we didn't have enough time going in at 4. So I suggest getting an early time slot!
You d better go at least 3hrs before closing especially if you re gonna have an audio guide.
If you are like me and never really "got" the Van Gogh thing then come here. I came out thinking I knew what kind of person he was and some of the turmoil he may have experienced during his short life. The work on show here portrays his artistic journey very well. He created far more work than I realised before my visit.
Fantastic museum. Due to a late start of the day, I was only able to spend about 3hrs looking at the art and listening to the audio stories and I did not make it to the exhibition. Some pieces like the Starry Night were not at this location, you still had his fantastic pieces to view. I had a really good time at the museum.
Disappointing and very crowded.
There are better Van Gogh paintings at the Stedelijk Museum. The exhibition doesn't convey the beauty and emotions of Van Gogh's paintings.
A great museum lots of information and reading about Van Gogh as well as a great array of paintings and some originals.
Nice museum and area but you need time cause it s always full of people.
Timed admittance helps prevent overcrowding. Interesting exhibits. You don't have to like Van Gogh to enjoy this museum.
Well laid out museum, and the captions below each painting do a great job to tell the story of his life
This is an excellent museum. To be surrounded by all these van Gogh paintings delivers a very very special experience.
A bit too expensive for not a lot to do and see. Overall a good experience though
It is not for me but there is a lot of art work and stories behind this artist. The place is really crowded and it is good to buy something for memory. It was not allowed to take photos of the art work but I did. I am sorry Van Gogh.
This is a bad place, the costumer service was horrible for all the staff, some museum rules are not followed by the museum staff
This museum closes at 6 pm and when we arrived at round 5 pm, nowhere was it mentioned about the tickets for the day being completely sold out. Not all tourists come with roaming free internet and there was no way to find out about tickets completely sold out.The automated ticket counter issued tickets for the next day. When we arrived at the entrance gate, we got a rude shock of the tickets being issued for the next day. The ticket counter is away from the entrance and no museum personnel present to help.
Please check everything in detail before paying up....we gave up the 2 tickets free.....
A really good museum. A lot of Van Gogh s biggest paintings like Starry Night are elsewhere, but what is here is clearly presented with a lot of love and care.
Very well organised with excellent audio guide. Only criticism is it gets very busy.
Amazing experience. I love his paintings so much. And to observe His development phantastic!
Can be hard to see the paintings, but a good range to look out. Top tip, pre-book online and go early.
Great museum but def buy tickets early because it sells out quick
Truly amazing genius. Crazy that he painted professionally for just 10 years. The museum audio tour really shows you his genius. Tragic end to an amazing artist.
Very enriching cultural experience . Rent a multimedia guide
This was my second visit to Amsterdam and I wasn t able to make it to the Van Gogh museum in my last trip, something I remedied this time around. Honestly, I m glad I did it and I even discovered some new paintings I now love but was previously completely unaware even existed. That being said it s not what I was expecting. They layout of the museum is a little weird, you start on the bottom floor after you come up an escalator from a different part but the way the paintings are placed was kind of detracting from the art for me. You look at some self portraits on the first floor then have to shuffle up a weird set of stairs level by level to the top floor before having to come back down again against mobs of people heading up. They had a few areas with paintings for artist he inspired or that he was inspired by with was interesting in seeing overlap or details that he got from them or other artist got from him. The audio guide could be improved or expanded on and if you plan on getting it bring your own headphones, at the time of my visit they had these horrible headsets that were way to small and dug into the back of my ear. For five euro I don t feel like the audio guide gave you much more than what I was reading in the bits next to the painting. Overall, worth the visit. You ll see some Van Gogh s you ve most likely never seen but they could make it leaps and bounds better by figuring a better planned layout for the museum and the painting placement. I feel like I walked through a building and looked at some art but because of the lighting, layout and people I didn t really experience the art.
Quite busy even if you come at the end of the day. Couldnt purchase tickets there, I had to to go online
The exhibition is good, well explained with enough text but it doesnt get boring. There are paintings from other painters as well to better understand the context
What could be better : the first room is too dark, where is the light? Also I didnt know which way to go to start the exhibition at every floor. No arrows, no signs... Also people where quite loud...
Good museum anyway :)
Van Gogh / art lovers should visit the museum. It explains all about Van Gogh life. Try and book tickets online well in advance, otherwise you may not get the ticket / entry at your suitable time.
Story about Van Gogh's life and the world's largest collection of his work
Great, Vincent's masterpieces and the supporting information are organised in a clever and structured way... Ideal for a relatively short visit, if you like.
The only gripe is that The Starry Night is not there. Seeing a Van Gogh collection which is supposed to be complete, without it is like eating pizza without mozzarella.
Other big plus: no queues as you can only book time-slotted tickets online.
Nice experience. When you book, you have the option to get a recording about his life. This is something to listen to when you navigate each room. You do have to pay extra. However, the recorder at Rembrandt House was included with the museum ticket
Be prepared to join a queue to leave bags, backpacks etc (if you must take them) before starting out to view the paintings. We made use of the audio guide available and found this to be most enjoyable and illuminating. Being able to view at our own pace and order was also freeing. One of us has had a long-standing interest in art, the other is just discovering more now. Would we go back again? Definitely, and that goes for both of us!
I had a great experience as an art lover, I thought tje temporary exhibits were really well done. I dont think children would appreciate it though.
Very nice modern building. Collection Is well preserved and well explained. Very helpfull staff.
The most comprehensive collection of Van Gogh in the world. Book you tickets at least few days in advance, otherwise you will not be able to see the collection.
If you are a Van Gogh fan, plan at least few hours. On Fridays it is open until 22, with bar and DJ. Fun place to visit and a must see in Amsterdam.
Excellent display, would like to have seen mention of other peices not in this collection and where they fit into the timeline
Incredible musuem! If you are an art lover be prepared to spend around 2-3 hours here. It is an excellent musuem that discusses Van Gogh's life and seperate the art into varying time periods to follow through his life. Pictures are not allowed in the musuem.
What a beautiful museum. The only drawback is that they don't allow you to take pictures and it's rather unfriendlily enforced.
Start on the top floor and work down is the best tip.
Nice to learn more about van Gogh's life, while also seeing his beautiful art!
Wonderful works of art at this museum a great selection
Amazing place with a wonderful collection. The gift shop and restaurant are also very good. As a tip it isn't strictly necessary to book a ticket online in advanced, you can buy one from a ticket booth near the Rijksmuseum, but I recommend booking one online in advance anyways.
Can't rate this museum highly enough. Excellent place to visit. The space is designed very well do that even when busy it doesn't ever feel crowded. The artwork on display is wonderful, and the collection has been curated with real skill. Time flew by, and we found ourselves wishing we could have spent an extra hour enjoying the place. Highly recommend.
One of the best museum's I've been to in Europe. It's quite modern and easy to navigate. I paid a few euros for the interactive touch screen audio guide. It is well worth the price. Definitely get the audio guide as it will enhance your experience.
Very nice collection of paintings and journey through the life of the great painter Vincent Van Gogh. Must visit if you are interested in flying back in time for a while.
Tickets sold online only so be sure to purchase before come to this museum. Queue was long but worthy. Don't miss when in Amsterdam.
Wonderful museum covering much of Van Gogh's career. They do not disappoint with the number of pieces in their collection. I would suggest the self portrait exhibit as pictured here
One of the best museums in the world. The placement of the paintings and the lighting in each hall is perfect
There is not so many Van Gogh's pictures but there is a pictures of his contemporaries and inspirers. Overall it is an interesting museum.
It is a walk among greatness and a must-see, unfortunately the rest of the world knows this as well. Most of them were there today.
Love the place. For the real fan of van Gogh 2 hours suggested on some websites will be not enough. I regret that I havent gone there earlier. During my next visit I will definitely take an audio guide.
Very interesting insight into Vincent van Gogh's life and achievements.
The museums has lots of works by Van Gogh, however it doesn't have major ones. Somehow all the best works of European artists end up in New York...
Its amazing! I love Van Gogh painting! If you are love it, go there! Beautiful museum, very friendly workers, clean bathroom and is possible go with kids. I do recommend it!
It is a must if you visit Amsterdam. Do not forget to buy your ticket the day before by internet.
A visit on Friday is recommended after 7PM. Live DJ and excellent atmosphere. Buy your tickets online in good time!
Amazing painting. Do not book slot after 7 pm on Friday. Need more than 2 hours for entire exhibition. Photo is not allowed.
Amazing experience in this museum ! Take the audioguide (a must) and discover the genius of Van Gogh
The museum creates a good insight into Van Gogh's life and mentality.
Well worth the entrance fee, make this one of your destinations when visiting Amsterdam.
One of the better museums I've been to. The audio guides make it much better - well worth the 5 . I feel I learnt a lot about van Gogh by visiting this museum.
Also, surely it's a gallery not a museum.
Much of real Van Gogh and other painters here. Great museum
An excellent museum, obviously more focused and narrow than the Rijksmuseum across the road. Nevertheless it is beautifully setup. The audio guide is excellent and my young boys were enthralled by it, following around and looking for the next masterpiece. The wheelchair service wad perfect for my elderly mother. A wonderful outing for all and beautiful memories.
Amazing selection of Van Gogh s work but the museum and audio tour have not been well designed
An impressive museum with thorough explanation of Van Gogh's arts via multimedia. Nearby a scenic museum area, right next to the airport bus stop, recommend to visit early to avoid crowds.
Well organized staff, friendly at the door (they handle stress well!) - great expirence! Highly recommend getting the audio it gave the expirence I wanted!
This is a must when visiting Amsterdam! Also they have the best audio guide I've ever used
Really great museum. Lots of original Van Gogh and good audio tour. Nice cafe... Yummy homemade soup.
Really cool way of presenting the art, but mostly crowded
Lots of wonderful paintings. Get there when it opens to beat the crowds
Allows you to view the largest collection of works of art by Vincent Van Gogh. Online reservations are recommended, as limited number of seats. The light can be improved to admire the exhibited works. The initiative of the treasure hunt for the little ones involving them in the visit is very nice.
Super museum...especially for those who want to understand human behind art and how the art evolved through an artist...then this is the place to be!
I was there on a Saturday and on the walk-in queue because all the online tickets of the day were sold out. However, the queue wasn't long and there wasn't a long wait. I followed the audio guide and it took around 2 to 2.5hr to finish first to third floors if you listen to everything. I gave a 4 star because there were signs already that people should not take any photos but it seemed that many were either ignorant or ignoring the signs. Luckily they had guards around the most famous pieces. I do think they should reinforce the importance of no photo taking. Recommended museum.
Was good just wish the starry night painting was their
Excellent museum experience. New installation of hockney'S Interpretation of van Gogh 'S work. Gift shop has good options.
Awesome Museum, take your time to do it. Plan in advance to buy the online tickets.
I visited Van Gogh Museum during my short visit in Amsterdam. A calm and quite place but difficult to find out for new comers. If you are fond of art and have enough time then u can plan to visit (It was my second Amsterdam visit so I dared).Need minimum 2 hours inside.I would rather recommend the outside area, full of fun and people. NOT a must go or second visit type.
Happy travelling ppl.
I'm sorry but I don't like this artist, so my score is not very objective.
Great museum. Explains and shows Van Gohs life, art and letters. His life was tragic but somehow beautiful. I feel that many paintings have feeling of something bad happening soon maybe reflecting his mental health issues. We had kids there too 13 and 10 years old. Surprisingly they enjoyed it too.
Amazing with lots of info about him as well as many of his paintings
Very beautiful museum located in a nice building. Good croud control allowing to have a good experience of the Van Gogh works, his background and influencing artist. Limited queues and spacious location.
Such a calm, inspiring experience. Has almost all of Van Gogh's works. The souvenir shop is nice as well. Was disappointed that "Starry Night" is not there, not even its copy, but otherwise really great experience.
Great museum. The layout of the museum was great and the exhibitions were fantastic as well. I would definitely recommend going here if you are in Amstadam, and if you do go I would advice getting the audio tour.
Mesmerizing! Worth the trip to the Netherlands just to see this amazing museum!
Buy tickets in advance! The museum takes you through van gogh short life, really nice experience ...
It's a big museum full of lots of van gogh. All the van gogh you could possibly ever want, and then some! The multimedia guide thing is like a big smartphone that gives you biographical info and insight on various works too, well worth the extra fiver if you're into that.
Wonderful experience! For a person like me who doesn't understand much about art, audio guide was a boon. The displays are arranged in such a way that it doesn't become monotonous. Interactive screens make it a multi sensory experience!
