Super cool hotel converted from a prison. Nice accommodation, great service, cool vibe. One of my favorite hotels ever and I travel a lot.

Staff was attentive and professional. My drink was quite good. The food however, was a bit of a let down. Firstly, significantly less was available than their online menu suggested. Then when the food we did order came out the aglio e olio was bland, barely better than unseasoned pasta in some of the water it was cooked in. The salmon was good but not up to the reputation (or price) of the restaurant. And the fries were painfully marred by the inclusion of truffle (this is mostly opinion I understand but I'm growing tired of seeing things over priced because foul smelling fungal leavings have been tuned in them). The brick chicken, thankfully, was actually very well done. The meter lemon risotto was fresh and clean in flavor ( though I feel it was a bit rushed, the rice was slightly underdone, but that lines up with my tastes so I did not mind), the texture and flavor on the bird itself was near perfect, a delightful crunch over tender meat. And the black garlic puree managed to be elegant and not over powering. I am glad to have tried their menu but overall it did not live up to the expectations set.
Rooms are clean, nice decor. Everything else seems a bit basic.
Unique hotel, fascinating story. A prison turned luxury hotel. The rooms were impeccably and uniquely decorated. The room service was average but the noise on weekends is almost unbearable unless you join the fun- keep in mind there's a Dj Thursdays through Saturday.
Clinks and scampi restaurants offered delicious food - a bit pricey service dxcellent
Wow beautiful hotel and an amazing historic behind it.
The Liberty is an outstanding luxury hotel with a unique twist. It use to be a prison! Yes, indeed. Up until 1990 it housed bad guys!
However, now it has transformed into this beautiful place to stay while in the great city of Boston.
The rooms are extremely comfortable and the staff is excellent! In addition, this property has some nice places to connect over terrific drinks and food as well. The names of these establishments also fit into the theme of the hotel as well - Clink, Alibi, The Yard.....
The other nice thing about The Liberty is that the location is perfect. It sits between Cambridge and Boston proper. It is also close to the airport.
Overall it is an outstanding Marriott property and is my first choice always when coming to Boston.
The building is pretty cool. That said, I bought the most sugary and expensive Long Island I've ever had at the lobby bar. It tasted like it was half syrup. It was horrible, and at $17 I would expect something phenomenal.
What a cool place to stay. It was my wife, as well as my first trip to Boston. We stay here and it was a very hip spot. A little on the high side but close to everything.
Great hotel, excellent service. Highly enjoyable stay!
Extremely cool, historic hotel that was converted from a jail that was built in 1851 and ceased operation in 1990. Many of the bars and themes of the jail are still present and it's a GREAT atmosphere. Highly recommended to stay there and eat/drink there. I will be returning when I'm back in Boston!
Great vibe to the place, was really interesting with the prison feel to it and a relaxing outdoor area. There is a dress code, but it isnt too strict and it adds to the experience. Very energetic bar that, even when busy never felt too packed to be uncomfortable. Would definitely go back to again.
Beautiful! The lobby is just stunning. The staff was amazing and always willing to help. I couldn't have asked for a better stay in Boston. Until next time...
The atmosphere was really nice and fancy. However on a humid day, it felt like there was no AC inside. The staff was quite pleasant. Ordered both the fries and oysters and they were really good.
Exllecent service, great food in hotel,
And very friendly staff
Booked my stay with Chase Ultimate Reward Points. Spent about 22,000 points ($220 cash-back value) for a room that regularly costs $330. We opted for the basic room king as we were only staying one night. We were greeted at concierge and offered champagne upon check-in. The room was spacious with a couch and equipped mini-bar. The bathroom had a shower and tub. We found our stay to be very pleasant and clean. Never stayed at an SPG property, but would definitely consider another stay in the future.
Only downside is downtown is limited in parking. We opted for a lot a few blocks away at $25 for 24 hrs instead of the $60 hotel valet.
Wonderful! Marianne, the concierge, was so helpful in recommending a great place for me to go since I was alone and got in late. It was actually a suggestion that wasn't on their list of nearby eateries (The Hill Tavern) but after explaining what I was looking for she came to that suggestion. It was perfect. The room was very clean, everything in good condition (not all beat up and worn), and the main hotel lobby and restaurants were roomy and easily accessible (not cramped into a small space). I also enjoyed the mini exhibit of the history of the hotel as a jail. The next morning, I asked the front office to charge my phone since I forgot my charger, and while I was waiting Jenny and Bridgette kept me company. They were so wonderful to talk to, exceptional conversationalists, and very interested in helping me see as much of Boston as possible before I left (I ended up doing the trolly tour with two museum tickets included for hotel guests). Amenities only go so far, and the staff are what truly make an experience. From check in to check out, it was a great experience. Having worked for a Starwood property in the past (a W), even I was greatly impressed. I would definitely recommend The Liberty.
A few things that just missed the mark. An escalator was required to enter the second level. Elevators were not apparent. The mini bar/refrigerator was so stocked there was no room to put anything in without removing items. The complementary shampoos were a mistry with out clear labels or ability to pump out the contents.
Luxe hotel, humorous and beautifully done prison theme
Stayed here for the weekend to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. Staff was super professional and accommodating. Was a great experience here and seeing the history of the old jail still show through in the modern era hotel was a treat. The rooms have a great feel to them and don't just feel like a standard hotel room. They are very well put together. Excellent service all around and would highly recommend.
I've only gone for Yappy hour. But the drink choices are great and my dog loves it. One of the only dog friendly events in the Boston area and for that it gets 5 stars and many recommendations to all my dog lovers out there
If you re planning to visit Boston, book here. You can walk to Beacon Hill and Public Garden. The mood at the hotel is very unique and creative.
My husband and I stayed here a few nights ago. The purpose of our trip was a date night away from our kids for my husband's birthday. Approximately 30 mins after we checked in, someone entered our room as I was getting out of the shower. I heard the door start to open so I jumped in bed under the covers because I wasn't dressed yet and didn't want someone to see me naked. My husband who was in the shower yelled and asked who it was but the person immediately turned around and left. We have no idea if it was a hotel employee or otherwise. We spoke to the front desk and they have been ignoring our concerns. I have no idea what they would have done or stolen if we weren't there. Also, they have not verified that it was an employee and not someone trying to gain access to people's rooms. After speaking to 3 people, they all said we need to speak to the director of rooms who is conveniently ignoring my husband's phone calls. This is a major security violation and we are lucky nothing happened to either of us. I wouldn't expect a room intruder at a motel 8, no less this hotel where I paid over $500 for a one night stay. Also, our date night and chance to sleep in without the kids was abruptly ruined when the guy started power washing the patio and building at 0600 outside our room on a Sunday morning. My husband and I loved this hotel prior to this but I am appalled that the hotel is not more concerned about this issue and not willing to reimburse our stay after a major security issue like this. Also, a front desk staff member admitted that they knew the power washing outside would occur early that morning but "we didn't have time to relocate the people in those rooms". So the hotel philosophy is really one that cares about its customers. This past stay completely ruined our opinion of this hotel. I would give it one more chance but without a reimbursement for this horrific stay or a free future night, we will not come back.
We went into the front of the building to check it out. I have no idea what the hotel is like, but the "music" was so loud we couldn't hear each other speak.
Clearly a 5 Star hotel in every possible way except the poor quality internet. WiFi Disconnections, and faulty RJ45 Jack in the room prevented us from completing tasks on schedule.
Really cool space (converted jail), great service, next to public transit and in a very walkable location. Loved the touch of champagne at check in!
Great restaurants and bar to hang out in. Parking is tough but it's right across the street from the red line T stop. Or you can walk along the Charles River to it. is very convenient to Mass general hospital and to Kendall Square
A place to go with friends or a date, you can find loud or quite corners, dance or converse
This hotel is a refurbished former prison. The hotel rooms are in a new part of the building, and the meeting rooms, services, and lobby are in the old part.Valet is available - The roads around the hotel are very confusing, much like the rest of Boston.
Hard to beat the location and vibe of this hotel. Walking distance to T train and Charles River.
Oh. And it used to be a jail.
VERY nice room, pretty much overlooking another office building 20 feet away. So if you want a view, be prepared to pay for it. Nice lobby, historic building. VERY comfortable beds, big bathroom and nice amenities. Front desk was OK but not very pleasant. The Charles/MGH T station is right across the street, but still, I felt it was kind of removed from the main action.
VERY convenient to Mass General, which is right next door. (I have been in Boston 3 times in 3 months for doctor visits at MGH, so booked here based on location.) Generally I liked staying closer to downtown, but still really only a fifteen minute walk to most locations we visited and the proximity to the T is great. Would I stay again? Yes, for the right price. Would it be my first choice? No.
What an amazing place. Historical and modern all in one. Impeccable service and beautiful rooms with great views. No expenses spared. Well worth a visit
Just returned from a weekend stay at The Liberty. In short, I do not recommend it. It is in no way a luxury hotel. This would be fine if they didn't charge luxury prices and advertise themselves thus. I am totally fine with a budget motel experience but only if that's what I'm paying for and expecting. The service at The Liberty is non-existent. I don't think we had any interaction beyond the sullen man at reception who checked us in. Our room wasn't cleaned at all yesterday and when I called upon our return to ask that it be cleaned when we stepped out for dinner there was no apology. When we returned from dinner housekeeping had made the beds and provided fresh towels but that was all. They did not provide new bottles of water, did not remove our dirty glassware from the bar, and did not empty the waste bins. Certainly no nice touches like turndown service or newspapers. Since a $20 per night facility fee is being charged they should at a bare minimum provide ample amounts of water. We received a grand total of two during our stay and there were four of us staying in the room. We were also surprised by the hefty $55 per DAY valet fee. Pretty tacky. I will not return here and will not be surprised when they are downgraded by or removed from the Starwood program.
Great place to stay in Boston, I'll always stay there on trips now!
Really cool Hotel which used to be a jail! The concierge was especially helpful, to the point that our trip to Boston would have not been nearly as fun had we not consulted with him.
He is my everything and more the most amazing & loving kindness amp caring and funniest person I ve ever ever have dated in my life and he s amazing in many ways too .he s my soulmate my partner in our future together is know amazing well it s worth every single minute of my love that I share with him
Cool venue, asked to move my room from the jail side over to the tower side because it was way too noisy which they accommodated for. This is more of a party hotel than a reprieve.
Overall a very nice hotel if you re visiting Boston. Comfy bed, clean modern rooms. The bar is pretty fun on the weekends, and thankfully the music/noise doesn t leak into the guest rooms.
Terrible service. Front desk was not available when called. They charged me for an incidental I didn t use. Concierge was not available when needed. They blare very loud music in the lobby.
Beautiful hotel, amenities, and friendly staff. Very close to public transportation and the hospital should you need it. Definitely a "trendy" place, but if you don't mind shelling out the extra cash the place is definitely worth it. Highly recommended
Beautiful space, loved the soaking tub in the bathroom and not having to leave the hotel to have a great time. So many choices for food and entertainment. Highly recommended!
Nice attractive rooms. Lobby needs to be kept a little cleaner. Good for MGH patients as right next door. I don't like the $25 resort fee charged on the room. It's a city hotel, I was using for business.
The hotel is conveniently situated to MGH and Beacon Hill, and is staffed with courteous people if you can find them. I waited 15 minutes to get attention from a bellman to leave my bag. The room was filled with giant dust bunnies. The shower had toiletries fixed onto the wall, and shower gel pump happened to be broken. Hence, shampoo had to suffice. The TV was also broken. The bed had several strands of hair...
A lovely hotel with two good restaurants, and comfortable rooms/beds, and great service! Apparently, it used to be a prison, hence the "Clink" restaurant....
The hotel experience was great. I did however leave my headphones in the room. I called and they said that they found them and would mail them to me which was great. However, it has been over a month and I can't get them to call me back or help me figure out where they are. I've just ordered new ones and I will not be staying there again.
I have stayed in this hotel during the week a few times and really enjoyed it. I recently stayed over a weekend night and was very, very disappointed. The two restaurants and lobby turn into a full on club and it was impossible to even get in for a drink. We ended up ordering room service which took forever and then was very, very wrong. It was corrected, but that also took forever. I would highly discourage staying here on a weekend unless you are looking for a club scene. It is an odd choice for such a pricey hotel.
I met a colleague at The Liberty for breakfast at Clink on the lobby level. I'm particular about my diet and have an allergy. This was a pleasant meal. The egg white omlette with feta and tomatoes is delicious. Service is also attentive and professional. I'll return.
The Liberty was a jail for roughly 100 years until 1990. A few years later it was transformed into a luxury hotel, leaving much of the original building intact. The provenance alone is worth a stay while in Boston. The bars and old bricks give it something that other hotels cannot offer.
That being said, the differences between the Liberty and other luxury hotels are like night and day. They seemed to be understaffed throughout our stay and we just didn't get that same personal touch that hotels like the Ritz Carlton and others are known for. I would likely try out another hotel the next time I'm in Boston.
The hotel has a very good interior design in term of architecture. It amazing how they changed a prison into a nice looking hotel like that. The main desk area is spacious and have skylights on the top and at the 4 corners of the walls.
Ate at Scampo. Not perfect but some very good flavors in a really nice setting. Ambiance is busy but not overbearing. Mains were all delicious as were our sides. Maybe the only let down was the garlic bread was not toasted enough. The other quirk... Had a Belgian beer but it was not in the proper glass. In no way did it detract from the meal obviously, it was just something I noticed and beer people would know what I mean. Delicious. Great setting. Wonderful flavors. Very easy to recommend
Fantastic place to grab drinks and enjoy an evening of fine food and great friends. The architecture and history of the Liberty should not be missed!
Place is way over priced, in room as I write this, room is gross , furnace filter is hairy and easy to see shower drain is clogged, piles of dust on floor, wish I could post pictures
I went for the New Year's event. The Catwalk is a beautiful, spacious venue that is great for talking and people watching. Will definitely return soon for a girls' night out!
The atmosphere is great - wouldn't order the Sangria again.
Decent location next to the Charles mgh train station, way overpriced for what's provided rooms were small. Mini bar is overpriced for a mini bar. View is advertised as being a feature it was alright not something to advertise on. All together a decent experience.
Scappo is
Fabulous. Try the lobster pizza. Also the lobster pasta. Delicious
Remodeled rooms are great and very modern. Friendly staff.
Fantastic amenities, rooms, and service. For a very low price. Could not be happier.
Amazing views and impeccably decorated suites. Great breakfast and drinks as well.
Drink service was very slow at the bar. The outdoor patio was spacious though.
One of the best lobbies in all hoteldom. Location excellent for Mass General Hospital, transit, and Beacon Hill.
Tower rooms are under-equipped and massively overrpiced. Staff genial enough. Come for an event or drinks! Stay in a better room elsewhere for much less.
Beautiful hotel, amazing character and so much history. Centrally located!
If anybody is trying to find good deals for hotels visit HotelBuIIy. com booked a hotel on there and they had the best rates anywhere!
This old Jail converted into a hotel is a great place to stay in Boston. They have a couple bars and restaurants to choose from if your working late and cant get out somewhere else in the city. Its location is great too - walk to many attractions and other spots in the city is easy from here.
Cool hotel in an old prison. Nicer than I expected.
