Very beautiful place and a must-go in San Francisco. I crossed the bridge cycling and it was so much fun. Just remind there are a lot of people there too and you will probably have to dismount from your bike to let people walk. Even though it was worthy the ride.

It s a beautiful place to see.

It s a beautiful place to see.
1. There is a boat ride available that takes you to under the bridge and make you see a clear view of whole bridge from water.
2. You can go by car and park it one corner, then take a walk on whole Bridge stretch. It s a beautiful time you will spend.

An iconic structure that is synonym to San Francisco. Beautiful, Huge. Got lucky as the day was clear and got an amazing view of the bridge from Battery Spencer. If you are in SF this place is a must visit. Nothing much at night though.

A visit to the mesmerising city of San Francisco is incomplete without making your steps to this heritage iconic tourist attraction The mighty Golden Bridge.

Construction

Construction
Construction began on January 5, 1933. The project cost more than $35 million ($514 million in 2018 dollars), and was completed ahead of schedule and $1.3 million under budget (equivalent to $24.2 million today). The Golden Gate Bridge construction project was carried out by the McClintic-Marshall Construction Co., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation founded by Howard H. McClintic and Charles D. Marshall, both of Lehigh University.

Until 1964, the Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m). Since 1964 its main span length has been surpassed by fifteen bridges; it now has the second-longest main span in the Americas, after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York City. The total length of the Golden Gate Bridge from abutment to abutment is 8,981 feet (2,737 m).

The Golden Gate Bridge's clearance above high water averages 220 feet (67 m) while its towers, at 746 feet (227 m) above the water, were the world's tallest on a suspension bridge until 1993 when it was surpassed by the Mezcala Bridge, in Mexico.

The weight of the roadway is hung from 250 pairs of vertical suspender ropes, which are attached to two main cables. The main cables pass over the two main towers and are fixed in concrete at each end. Each cable is made of 27,572 strands of wire. The total length of galvanized steel wire used to fabricate both main cables is estimated to be 80,000 miles (130,000 km). Each of the bridge's two towers has approximately 600,000 rivets.

In the 1960s, when the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) was being planned, the engineering community had conflicting opinions about the feasibility of running train tracks north to Marin County over the bridge. In June 1961, consultants hired by BART completed a study that determined the bridge's suspension section was capable of supporting service on a new lower deck. In July 1961, one of the bridge's consulting engineers, Clifford Paine, disagreed with their conclusion. In January 1962, due to more conflicting reports on feasibility, the bridge's board of directors appointed an engineering review board to analyze all the reports. The review board's report, released in April 1962, concluded that running BART on the bridge was not advisable.

What s not to like about this gorgeous view and the grandeur of Pacific Ocean on one side and the city by the bay on the other with the magnificent bridge connecting Marin and San Francisco.

Obviously an iconic structure. Be mindful that if you're driving across in the direction of San Francisco, you'll have to pay a toll. There are various ways of paying, but a tollbooth is not one of them. If you're visiting and in a rental car, it may be best to use the company's toll payment service. We passed on that service and learned the hard way that the various ways of paying online didn't seem to apply to our rental. Instead we ended up having to call them to pay the toll. (You have 48 hours after crossing to pay)

Breathtaking views. Super helpful team at the info building, with phone chargers!!! (No iPhone charger but you can use your own). And reasonably priced souvenirs which is nice. A bit more out the way than I expected... But SF is a lot bigger than I expected too!

Of course this is only one of the most celebrated built works in the Americas. The features around it, Chrissy Field, Ft Point, the oveick, the visitor center and nearby parts like Lands End, etc etc are all also worth a visit and help round out the experience.

It's always so inspiring to take a stroll on the bridge.
Pro tip: If you're a tourist, please be mindful of the cyclists. I noticed that a lot of pedestrians tend to walk on cyclist zones, unaware

VERY limited public parking (consider luck if you get one) so PLEASE plan out your trip(s) there ahead of time. They do have a very nice tourist center / souvenir store right by the bridge abutments/parking area. Also, check the live cam for the day-of weather so you could get the best shot of both the bridge and yourself.

Great to see it and drive across but traffic was mental. We went on a Saturday around midday and the parking was all chock a block. We eventually parked in a spot on the city side of the bridge. It can be bitterly cold even when 30 degrees c in the lower bay area(day we went it was 13 degrees c at bridge) so bring a coat or windbreaker. Fog often covers so check conditions before u go

The bridge area was crowded with tourists. We drove up to the very top of the hill to take pictures and were very pleased to see less people up there. Well worth the 10 extra minutes spent driving through all the tourists. Wear warm clothes and bring an extra blanket as it can get chilly around sunset. Breathtaking views all the way around!

Saw the bridge from a distance at sunset and close up in the fog and again the next day when it was clearer. An iconic structure in a beautiful setting but the world is full of suspension bridges. If bridges are your thing and you are ever near Newport South Wales UK come and see the Newport Transporter Bridge. see photos attached. and ride the Gondola or if you're feeling brave climb the towers and walk across the boom to the other side..... Its one of only 5 such bridges in the world.... Admittedly the setting isn't as beautiful as the San Francisco Bay but the experience of walking across is fantastic j Jo

There is nothing quite like standing on one of the rocky outcrops along the cliff to get the best view. A constant and vicious wind whipping around you that is both refreshing and cold at the same time. When I first trekked down the hill heading towards Marshall Beach, Karl The Fog, was rolling down the bay in a spectacular fashion, but 5 minutes later the skies cleared just enough for the sun to peak through and light up the Golden Gate with its golden light Prettier in person than any postcard you ve seen before!

Amazing an awesome breathtaking views, restroom was clean well-maintained important during this time. When you pay for parking no receipts came out, maybe that was planned 4 limited contact. But nothing can change the amazing awesome view, even when fog is there I love it

Great place to visit! Be sure to grab an taxi or an Uber. I was there 5 minutes and the car next to mine had it's window broken into. The theives did this in daylight surrounded by people. Smash window grab a bunch of stuff and drove off before anyone realized what happened. I decide to leave after that. I will visit a other day without my car. Otherwise, the place is great and quite busy.

Any bridge is a better looking from both ends and this one is no exception tho it looks magnificent from.the side. Easy to get from.the main point even by bus and walking it down won't take as much as you'd think. It was a cloudy and foggy day today but never let the weather miss out on such a huge landmark like this one. Unmissible

Yes, you can walk the bridge. Yes, it's windy (duh). Yes, it's mind bogglingly big. Walk on the east side for best views of the city, walk on the west for best views of the ocean and nature. I'm sure it's stunning at sunset

The wind in my hair as I crossed made it worthwhile. The fact that there was free public access made the experience great. Have fun, but be wary of the fact that the bridge has specific closing times

A must visit landmark in San Francisco and I walked the bridge all the way. The view from above the bridge is great! It was super windy when I was there, so I felt cold, actually. And I didn't know that there's only one side for the pedestrians and bikes can go on both sides. I walked both ways and when I walked back, I thought I wanted to see different views, so I started walking on the other side. It didn't take me far until a biker told me that I was walking the wrong way.

This is the reason people actually come to San Francisco! The bridge has absolutely iconic status. And trust me, going to it is as amazing as one thinks it would be. Make sure to drive across the bridge. There's a nice viewing area. However, this remains very crowded. You could also find trails that take you down to the bay to get good shots. Also, you could walk on the bridge. All of these experiences would be worth it and would give you something unique.
