The homestead it's a high end resort, but the service and quality don't quite measure up to the price. The rooms are showing their age ( in fact, the first room we were put in had a large hole in the ceiling, and the second had a loudly leaky bathtub faucet). The place is in dire need of renovation. The restaurants were good, but overpriced for the quality, which comes from a captive resort destination. The spa was better than the rest of the resort. The massages were adequate, but the manicure was excellent and we're the general so facilities (though the steam sauna was it off order). In general, I would say that this is a grand resort on the decline, and I will not be returning any time soon.

This hotel has a lot to offer. Spa, golf, activities, lovely meeting rooms, friendly guests. We had a wonderful time. The hotel could use a renovation, but we weren't put off by it. We would return.

I'm giving The Homestead five stars although this review may leave you wondering. As it stands today the room air conditioning seems spotty across the hotel. Our room was in the 60s and changes to the AC thermostat yielded no change whatsoever. Several others said their rooms were too warm and the AC was ineffective. Carpeting in the hallways is worn and soiled after years of use and neglect. At the same time we found the staff (everywhere in the complex) to be warm and helpful. Professional people. Omni owns the resort now and we heard a nearby restaurant owner say that Omni is slated to invest $60-80 millions in repairs. Omni should publicize the amount and offer schedules and explanations for the work to be done. Let's hope there is truth to this and that plans are being developed for a makeover of this landmark location.

Friendly staff and still "grand" in some areas, but hotel seems dated. With hardly anyone there in January, our room overlooked a very crowded roof, and we're part of their select membership. Excessive resort fee. Would not stay again.

True Southern hospitality. Nothing else like it! Majestic facility which has been there since 1766 and hosted many of the US Presidents. Friendly staff and the guest are even friendly... must be relaxed from the place! Good food and not too expensive; excellent donuts! I will be back.

Disappointed in the Homestead. Had three bad experiences during our stay that devolved from poor staff behavior. A debacle on the golf course, a rude interruption in the spa and bad information from a front desk attendant left a bad taste in our mouths. We will return, but I hope this was a one off bad experience.

Overall a wonderful experience. The service and staff were most helpful and a joy to work with. All of our dinings were excellent.
Areas for improvement lie within the structure. As the hotel continues to a age it must be a challenge to maintain, but the carpets and the general condition of the floors were showing quite a bit a wear.
My room was very nice, #1744, but the A/C was noisy and I found it difficult to sleep when on.
This is a beautiful historic in the in the mountains of Virginia. There are a wealth of things to do and the service is outstanding. As noted above in my experience there were some very minor issues, but none to diswade one from coming.

The Homestead is a beautiful property - we enjoyed our stay and most of the staff is spectacular. Sadly, money was taken from my wallet, which was inside my purse, closed in my suitcase and my experience with security 'rained on my otherwise, wonderful stay. (Yes, I should have used the safe, but this is my take on The Homestead.) So! Yes - visit it, stand firm on your reservation times regardless of what staff says when you call. Lock up you belongings. Avoid The Jefferson and Enjoy the Spa! It's a little slice of heaven.

Beautiful hotel and location. One gripe I have is although I understand the reason for keeping everything preserved, this has come at the cost of having rooms with stains or faded colors, which should not be happening at a resort of this price level.

We were not aware of this resort until we received an Omni promotional e-mail last winter. We were blown away!
As the "country's first resort" it has elegance, charm...and shows it's age. If you go in with the mindset of "historic", you won't be disappointed. The setting is beautiful and activities offered are extensive. We were lucky to have picked the same weekend as Taste of the Region, and definitely will plan on attending that again. Dining was very good, although pricey.
The area is surprisingly remote and we did not read the warning on the website to NOT follow the GPS. That is a good tip. It can be harrowing on the back roads.

We took friends to The Homestead Resort with us for the weekend. We have been coming here for over 12 years and had the worst service at Jefferson's Bar we have ever experienced. Check # 2044 on 6/27/15 with Irene. After sitting down in the bar (good view), we were greeted after about 10 minutes with no smile, no introduction, and one menu for six of us. The area the waiter's were standing around talking was literally 20 feet away from our table in open view, so there is no reason for such a delay. Irene drops off the menu and returns 10 minutes later to take our drink order. After she stumbled through with us having to correct her multiple times, she left. One person in our party tried to be nice and said maybe she is new. My wife responded that she was not and they have had poor service with her every time they come (so basically mgt is unaware or doesn't care how bad she is). After about 10 minutes (yes we are up to 30 minutes total now), she returns with 4 of the six drinks, explains the others are coming, and leaves. One person in our party notices a fly at the bottom of his drink when he goes to drink it. We flag down Irene, because checking on us or bring the missing drinks is too much to ask, and tell her about the fly. She apologizes and asks if he would like another one (would anyone really tell her and not want another drink?). She comes back 7 minutes later (up to about 37 minutes now) with the two missing drinks she did not bring originally (which were a glass of wine and a beer by the way, nothing complex). When she starts pouring the replacement drink into the glass, it starts spilling on the table, but she keeps going. Then when the glass was almost full, the top on what she was pouring from (that she was not holding down) fell off, into the drink, spilling it all over the table and three of our guests. She offered her apology (nothing about sorry about your clothes, are you ok, can I get something to help get the stain out of your clothes) and went to get another one. 7 minutes later she returned and was finally able to provide his drink without a fly and without spilling it all over him. So in total, it was about 45 minutes before we all got our drinks, had a fly in one, had one spilled on three people, and she still acted like we were an inconvenience to her. Typically at a bar if this happened, all of our drinks would have been comped, or at the very least the one with the fly and spilled with an offer to dry clean the clothes spilled on, but no. Not from Irene. She did not care, and the gentleman walking around the bar, appearing to maybe be the manager, never asked us about it or even approached us.
Now all that being said, we enjoyed the restaurant when we went there a few months ago, but the bar has been bad in the past and was horrible this time.

Beautiful, elegant, and clean! Worth the stay if you need a getaway or are travelling in the area and haven't been there! It doesn't provide great value on a pretty high cost though. Rooms are pretty average and there's limited free services.

First let me start off with the property really does look amazing. Very large area, with an outdoor pool and an outdoor skating rink which my kids enjoyed tremendously. The main thing why I'm giving it only a three-star review was the service. I've heard that the homestead is supposed to be in the same league as The Greenbrier, but my experience is they're not even close. Even though I didn't have any service that was impolite, but I found that most of the dealings I had with the service people either had no knowledge of some simple Resort questions I had or even who I could go talk with. They were very unattentive and didn't seem to care whether or not they provided good service or not. This place isn't cheap and typically the reason why is that you have a professional staff that tends to go out of their way and make sure you had a wonderful experience. Unfortunately that's not what I had. Maybe this just happened to be a fluke, but honestly it wasn't one or two people I dealt with it was a number of them. Again the property is wonderful, the indoor pool was amazing as well as the outdoor pool. We very much enjoyed ice skating and my eight year old daughter some ski lessons. We went right after the New Year I'm not sure if they were short staff but the ski lodge seem to be understaffed and most of it looked uncleaned and disheveled. After my daughter's ski lesson, we had lunch in the ski lodge and had to clear and wipe down the table ourselves, and we actually picked the least of the dirtiest. One evening my son and I had dinner in there Bar Lounge. It took quite a while to be waited on, once we did, our waitress brought us two glasses of water and then we didn't see her again for about 20 minutes. We ordered our food, never got any refills on our drinks, when she brought us our food she knocked over both of drinks. I know it was an accident and not overly upset about that, but we never saw her again until she brought us the check. So after spilling over are two drinks she never brought replacements for them. I'm not sure if I would return, for the amount of money that you spend these are simple things that you shouldn't have issues with.

Have been coming here for years and love it. Although the food quality has gone down in the main dining hall, the new restaurants and other existing restaurants on site have GREAT food with unique dishes. The Omni has done a good job of keeping up the Homestead and making renovations and additions that add value like the new outdoor pool area. It would be nice to have more adult games in the game room... seems as if just for kids. Also the condition of the pool tables and cues is atrocious. Itd be nice to have this area kept up.

The staff was so nice!! Everyone that worked there was so nice and welcoming. Treated me like family, made me feel so good. Shoutout to Mark (I believe that was his name) at the front desk, he was amazing so nice and welcoming, helped us with everything we needed. He is a role model employee and I would want someone like that working for me. Service was outstanding!

Shopping area, spa, golf swimming, casino, you name it and it may very well be at your fingertips. The food is GREAT and the dining room staff make sure the food is fresh and plentiful. A Wonderful place for any occasion!!

I love classic old style resorts. The Greenbrier and The Homestead are two excellent examples. However, this most recent visit has had some issues. I had to call and ask to by have my room cleaned. It was at 6:30 in the evening that my room was untouched. (Motel 6 gets this right.) Dinner in the dining room was a 2 hour ordeal. 730 dinner, 745 ordered appetizer and main course, had to wait over 15 mins for drinks, reminded them to bring bread...for the first time, appetizers came at 820, entrees came at 9:20ish. They did comp our dinner but this was over the top for a resort of this level. Tentative on whether I make a return trip.

This is a great place to go! Historic hotel with a lot of history. Plenty of things to do at and around the hotel. Rather expensive to dine at the hotel and if you do be prepared to dress for dinner, although breakfast is casual. I recommend dining at one of the local diners and restaurants around the hotel. I really recommend the Zip line, the sites a wonderful and the staff are very friendly and do a great job of making you feel safe. Dakota and Montana were wonderful guides, my hats off to them for making the Zip line a cherished memory.

Stay home-instead!!!! The poor experience began at check-in, they had given away the room that I had requested back in May(5 months ago). I booked a king room and all they had at check-in was a queen(I was there right at the time I could check-in). I arrived to a musty smelling room(and it never improved, it was hard to sleep with that disgusting smell). The smell also made me want to spend as much time outside the room as possible. When trying to find out information about activities to do during our stay, the staff at the activities desk acted like they were inconvenienced by questions that we had to probe for an answer. We didn t end up doing anything besides putt-putt, which did not involve the activities desk. The putt-putt course was poorly maintained with mud on a few greens. To say the least I was thoroughly disappointed.

It's what you would expect when choosing a resort that has just about everything you could want in an historical location. It's kinda off the beaten path up winding roads tru beautiful mountains and farm lands. Wonderful golf courses, three within minutes of each other, but the Sam Snead hangout is at the "Hot" as it's locally referred to is close to the main resort. I think it's a place where the old and new come together well and work beautifully as a whole. A family place, We love it!

This is a bucket list destination just due to the historical aspects of the property. However, it is pricey and in need of renovation. Be very careful checking your bill as many people find errors on their invoice, quite often from restaurant charges. Pet fees very high and you pay a steep cleaning fee deposit even if there is no extra cleaning needed due to your pet. Front desk staff seems to have limited ability to properly fix charges and/or make adjustments to your bill.

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Omni resort. The Staff was pleasant, knowledgeable, very professional and friendly. From the valet, to bellhops, front desk staff, maintenance, I felt like I was the only customer there. Good experience, and I would definitely return next time I'm in the Hot Springs or Covington area.

Let me start by saying this is the first time I have ever posted a review but I feel strongly visitors should be warned before spending their money at The Homestead.
The next suite was bigger, but more of the same. Wallpaper peeling off the walls, terribly stained furniture. As mentioned in other reviews, The Omni needs to invest in major upgrades to the once majestic Homestead.
The spa package included serenity garden passes, meaning we could sit outside in lawn chairs that were falling apart, next to a reflexology walk covered in algae. The massage I had was mediocre for $235.
After all of this, we decided we would rather drive 4 hours home than stay another night here. Please don t let this disintegrating establishment rob you, too.

The room was comfortable. Queen sized beds would have been better. The toilet in our bathroom was not secure, it rocked when you sat on it. We were given tickets for free wine, but it was unclear where the tickets were honored despite our asking! My husband had to walk from Woody's restaurant all the way to the Lobby Bar and back with our wine. The Pool area is wonderful! We enjoyed the Lazy River, pool and the Allegheny Springs restaurant.
