I reserved a compact, told to grab a full size sedan because there was no compact available. Got charged an extra 50 dollars because I upgraded. They did take off the charge after I went back up to the counter.

How a company of this low moral standard exists is beyond my comprehension. Not only did it take more time but it ultimately cost us more money to rent for them due to their obscure and fraudulent charges. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau regarding this specific location. I suspect this behavior is systemic throughout the entire company.
The price can't be beaten. Super low compare to others. Just the shuttle bus service need to wait for a long time. Others car rental shuttle may passby 5times only come once.
Very bad experience at LAX waiting for the shuttle, only one saw in last 20 minutes just drove past with fully loaded passengers. Extremely angry with the service so far.
During this time 7-8 hertz, enterprise, Alamo have passed by.
Added with later updated:
After 2nd bus drove past with fully loaded passengers, around 45 mins (could be even longer) later we waited at the island, finally managed to squeeze into the first bus willing to stop at the rental car pickup island at terminal 6 of LAX.
The shuttle bus only has one door in the middle of the bus and you could imagine the difficulty for customers fighting to get in and get out of the bus with big luggages. Whose genius idea to lease these buses need to take the ride himself/herself to see customer s pain point.
The car pickup experience is ok, then very interesting experience when walking to car lot. The gentleman at counter kind enough to write G: premium. I am happy with the car so far.
I do not like to use Facebook. Dollar is welcome to let me know other contact method other than Facebook.
Fast rental return despite the high volume. Good company to rent from but be aware of the add-ons, there are many fees you don't need so ask the representative to waive them. Picture is the car I rented 7 days, I paid$90 and Delta miles.
They are thieves. Simple. What they say to you is NOT what they write in the rental contract. For your information the contract is written above a series of small cardboard pages... like the boarding pass for an airplane, impossible to check what they put on it.....unbeliavable. they offer an upgrade of your car as a courtesy (as often happens in europe) but it is not! You will pay! And you will pay more than the price difference you might see in Internet. AVOID!!
A long way to Dollar coz the shuttle service have to go to two companies. And you need to prepare more time to airport coz we waited a long time back to airport. Fortunately we did miss the flight.
Last time for Dollar took forever to get picked up as all the other rental car buses just kept going by. Then it was so crowded I had to get off the bus multiple times as they made more stops. They replied to my review 2 months later with a corporate number that put me in hold and then hung up. Sad.
I saw the ratings after I booked. Almost cancelled. Here is the hack. GET THE KIOSK remote agent. Some of local people are a bit impersonl and undertrained and the line was long. BUT bedauae I have a US license I got to speak to Rob via kiosk video conferencing! :) He helped me change an online kayak reservation whwre I had completely selected the wrong dates by my mistake... And he got me a lower daily rate! I travel almost constantly for buainwsa but I needed to save money because I'm on a vacation. That was my best rental experience I've ever had and I'm now choosing Dollar even when I can expense it and would normally choose a "high end" option. Rob from remote (Arizona) you are the best. Melina from checkout gate was also cool.
Absolutely poor customer service. The lady was rude when we didn't buy anything additional. The line was horrendous. The lot crew seemed somewhat pleasant as well as the drivers. I've rented a lot of cars and hands down, longest wait and worse experience I've had. Our vehicle was nice and so was the price, so I guess there is a positive. We were waiting for quite some time for the shuttle to come after we returned our car with a big group of people waiting and when I went to check an see an estimated time, no one wanted to help me... Three employees acted like I didn't exist. I never write reviews but was compelled to say something about this experience.
If you can't speak English, it's a bit difficult. Which car is the end of the reception? I'm not sure. In fact, if your car is in an area where the type of car It doesn't matter which ... ( _ ;) I am confused by Japanese people. Since this car is not specified ... (^^
I am sorry but worst experience, I booked a car with Thrifty car rental but they asked to pick it up at Dollar Rent a Car (may be they are working together). The customer service over there is very bad, they were unhappy that I came to pick up the car booked from Thrifty. The agent started criticizing about picking the car at this location. I gave him my US drivers license but he also asked me my international drivers license and I gave it to him. After a while he started saying that the system is not accepting and he asked me to call the booking company and cancel it. It was midnight and he made us (I was with my wife and mother-in-law)to wait for more than 2 hours. Finally I had to cancel my existing reservation and book another one with Dollar for twice the price that I had paid before. He looks like an Indian and his costumer service was very bad and he was rude and impatient all the time.
2 people working...25 people in line on a Friday night...get it together!! Hire more competent people. The 2 here now have been with the same people for 20 minutes. Cheaper to hire a personal driver than wasting time here.
Terrible experience. Shuttle didn't show up at the airport. Had to call uber to take to their location. A long line and only 3 employees working. Will not recommend.
In and out quickly, free upgrade bc they didn't have my car class but the counter guy kept trying to upsell me on insurance and was kinda rude about it.
The actual in-person experience was not bad, but it was a nightmare afterwards. I had a lengthy convo with an associate about my charges that did not match what I was given at the time of online booking. What it boils down to is that I was wayy overcharged (over 200%) for an additional fee (LDW) and for "mandatory taxes and fees" that did not match the payment expected at desk, as stated in my online confirmation. The associate told me that the fee difference was due to an upgrade (which we did NOT request!), and that the fact that we booked through a third party, so it was their responsibility to convey the correct info. When I stated that we booked through their website, they said ALL ONLINE SALES are pushed through a third party.
So BEWARE booking online! And associates sneaking in additional fees. If you DO choose to book with Dollar Rental, make sure you bring a copy of your online sale and expected payment amount. We didn't ever receive an email receipt as promised. I learned of the overcharge on my Credit Card statement, and had to fight tooth and nail to get it reduced.
Do not rent from here!!! They charged us $400 for a smoking fee & we don't even smoke. We attempted to speak with management about this but they refused to allow us to speak with anyone. When we returned the car & they claimed to smell smoke there was an employee smoking in the parking lot less than 20 feet away. We will NEVER rent from them again & suggest you don't either. Complete RIP OFF!!!
Although the queue for an advisor had a large number of people in it we didn't wait very long to be seen. Customer service was of a good standard and they did all they could to keep the cost as low as possible. Would use this rental again.
It's cheap, but it's best not to add any options at the reception. When I said that a car with a USB port was good, the price went up by 10,000 yen without any confirmation.
Moreover, I rented a car in the highest class, but it was troublesome because I was repeatedly asked, "Did you really rent this?"
In other respects, the convenience is high because it is basically cheap and can be returned 24 hours. Also, since it is a shuttle bus from the airport, it is better to check the platform
took me 1 and half hour to be at the first of the line. and employee was typing all my infos in his computer for another 15 minutes which I already sent during reservation.
They refused to acknowledge my already made reservations and charged me a completely different price (+100). I also had to wait 2 hours between shuttle, lines, and finding a car to even drive. To top it all off the staff were SO RUDE both picking up and dropping off the car. Take your money anywhere else but here.
Worst car rental experience of my life. I was charged for a car upgrade that I didn't ask for. The person at the counter was very unfriendly, and she didn't ask if I would agree on the car update. They just take advantage of tourists arriving after long haul flights. The car rent was the biggest disappointment of my holidays in the US.
I rented the car with extended insurance and when I arrived at the office they told me it was not worth it and I had to buy another insurance, apart from many extras that they tried to offer me, in the end it cost me 180.00 more than I did not even think that the The person who touched me was not friendly at all. Another thing that I did not like is that once you get the papers you have to go to an area where the vehicles are and they do not correspond with what I had requested online and I was more than 40 minutes looking for a vehicle with a full tank of gasoline since it is one of the extras that I had to pay and all the vehicles come with the empty deposit.
Dollar (and in particular this location) has been amazing. We were charged more than was estimated, so we came back and they were very accommodating. Liz and Eden were particularly helpful. The shuttle from LAX was great, in times and ran often when our flight came in at 2am. Great, great service.
One star is too many for this place. Right from the beginning on the shuttles they were rude and unhelpful. Secure your belongings on the ride from the airport because it's a bumpy ride. Get to the rental place and wait forever to speak to someone. The guy at the desk was impatient and mouthy because he had to do his job. Charged me an extra $70 for no reason. Finally get a beat up car and upon exit they refuse to look over the car. I try and get them to make note of all the damage but they just say it's in the system. But I know this place is so crooked that if I drove off the lot like that then they will say I did all the damage. So after much argument they agree to note the damage. I will NEVER use any dollar car rental again! Safe yourself the headache and pay a little extra to stay away from this place.
There was a little confusion at the time of getting the car. Overall was fine. I enjoyed renting the car on the dollar. The service was quick and the staff efficient.
Horrendous experience... I should have read all of the previous reviews and would have avoided this place like the plague. I am (was) a longstanding Dollar Express member and rent(ed) from Dollar when I travel on business each week... That will never happen again. Had a reservation at LAX and got there yesterday only to find they had no cars and that it would be a 2 plus hour wait. There was a HUGE line angry of people waiting for no cars. Ben the "manager" was incredibly rude and could care less; basically said deal with it. Uber saved the day and I rented elsewhere. After this horrific experience, Dollar sucks.
Acceptable car rental place. Service is good, but they try to upsell you on everything. We liked our car. Paid for economy and ended up with a 2017 Hyundai Accent.
We needed to fly to Los Angeles for a wedding and obviously needed a car. We tried to offset the already expensive trip by trying to save money on a rental car. We booked through Hotwire because it was significantly cheaper to do so. Unfortunately for us, Hotwire doesn't tell you the rental company until *after* you rent the car. We had never rented from Dollar before so we really didn't know what to expect.
We were off the plane and at the shuttle stop at LAX by 12:30 am and had to wait about 20 minutes before the shuttle even showed up, which was the first sign that this wasn't going to be a great experience. Finally, the shuttle comes and takes us to the agency. We walk in the door at 1 am and there's a line of about 20 people waiting and only three agents taking care of them. After maybe 15 minutes, one of them just leaves, so now we're down to two. We didn't get in a car and off the lot until 2:30 in the morning.
When the time came to drop the car off, we had no problems. We were in the lot and out of the car in minutes. Then, we walked to the agency to hop on the shuttle to take us to the airport. Again, we had to play the waiting game. After 10 minutes, a shuttle shows up and drops people off and then proceeds to drive by us and park. There's already a huge line of people waiting to get on. People eventually started calling taxis to pick them up, and one woman missed her flight waiting. A shuttle showed up after another 15 minutes and got us to the airport with 15 minutes before boarding. We got to the agency an hour and a half before our plane was supposed to leave, thinking that would be more than enough time.
TL;DR - You get what you pay for. Don't book through Hotwire and *NEVER* book through Dollar. Spend the few extra bucks to rent from a reputable company like Hertz or Enterprise.
The manager here is rude as hell. She wouldn t let me book even though I have a debit card, disconnecting flight and my ID. She lied and said at first there weren t anymore cars, then it went to I can t use my form of debit card.. which is another lie!! I have transaction history showing I ve booked with the same exact card!
They did not have the car or class (similar) of car I reserved online. They only offered a lower class car at a 50% cost increase, said there must have been a mistake online. Was told by rude manager Do it my way or your way which he then explained I could pay extra for a lower class car or leave the building and be stranded! I needed a car! NEVER use Dollar! Not the agreed amount, not the agreed car and then they threaten to refuse you a car if you don t pay!
The absolute worse car rental experience of my life and that is saying something. I wish I could give it zero stars. With an express rental it took over an hour to leave the lot. First car I was given wasn't mechanically ready and I was sent back leaving the lot. Then my replacement car was given to another customer. After waiting an additional half hour no car was available so I asked for a replacement. No other cars available. What is the point of having a reservation if you don't have a car ready and waiting when I arrive. Customer service was terrible, no one had any answers and no manager present to mitigate a deteriorating situation. Complete customer service failure. I would rather walk across LA before I rent with dollar again.
An EXTREMELY CHEATING business. Never rent from this place. They say they have a very cheap deal but they have tons of loop holes to charge you twice or 3 times the agreed price. They had never mentioned to me that I had to present a bill for the gas I filled and ended up charging me $30 even though I gave them the car with full tank gas showing on the meter.
- 30 minutes waiting for a shuttle from the airport. - Unpleasant employee, condescending and seeking at all costs to sell unnecessary insurance - gps does not work after 1 day due to an encoding error - no cars available during the pick up: 30 minutes extra wait.
Only positive point: the return of the car went well.
The staff at this place is as unfriendly as they can get. The representative helping me was almost rude. She did nothing to hide her expression of bored and "I don't care" attitude. More over that attitude kept coming up with every question I asked her or every question she asked me.
One day of car rental, most companies, count from the time hired to the same time the next day. I hired the car at 12:06pm (after my flight landed at 10:40 and I was waiting all this while to rent a car that I had already paid for!), so technically I should be returning it on or before 12:06. She said, yeah 12:06 is the return time, I asked her again and yet again and she said yeah yeah its 12 pm. When I went to my hotel and checked, it said 11:00am. Bummer! Now thanks to their pathetic representative I have to be at the airport 1 hour early and get bored out there. Not to mention the LIES that the representative told me about insurance. She said insurance was 35 something dollars a day and it was compulsory in CA state, when the truth is there are other insurance packages you can choose from. The sad part is I saw a lot of international customers here falling in that trap. So International Customers BEWARE!
Thanks for ruining time off my vacation Dollar! The only reason I chose them was because they were a little cheaper than Enterprise. I've been a loyal enterprise customer, and after this experience, I'm not choosing anyone else again.
Note: They don't even provide a phone number. Call the 866 number on their website.
Won't rent again they are over priced for what you get they charged me for a week when I only had the car 4 days. second they didn't charge me til almost a week later for the car after I returned it. I seriously want my money back for everything.I will stick with a company like Avis or enterprise from now on.
I booked through Hotwire so I had no choice as to which company I received. I registered to be an Express customer only to have to waiting in a long line where there were no cars available and no one to help you with your car. People just got into whatever car was available. Hertz is not any better and they are both owned by the same company. No more Hotwire, Dollar, or Hertz for me.
They are thieves, I rent a Mustang all tax included on the Ebooker website, 466 and after the return of the car I was charged 313 additional under supplementary insurance that I have never validated . The person at the reception gave me my lease without even telling me. This is forced sale to foreign tourists. A real mafia.
SCAM ALERT! Check the lot when they say they're out of a particular class of car; odds are they're lying to try and upcharge you into a larger car class. They apparently do this to everyone.
My review is for the LAX Dollar Rent a Car. Upon arrival at my hotel, which was a 2 hour drive, I received notice that Dollar had attempted to charge $15,003 to the credit card I just used at their counter. After 20 minutes on the phone with Dollar 1-866 number I was informed that since the card was not charged (my CC company saw it as an unusual amount and declined to authorize it) that there was nothing more to do but speak IN PERSON with the Dollar LAX location when I return the car in 10 days. I find this annoying on so many obvious levels, and I must also write of my irritation with the 30 minute wait in line to get to the counter from the front door, only to be violated in such a manner. Just say no to Dollar Rent a Car. I would rather Flintstone my way around town then rent from them again.
Goodmorning Dollar Customer This is going to be very simple this morning PLEASE PLEASE GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME NOT 2HRS MAYBE LIKE 3 or 4 HOURS WHY TRAFFIC TRAFFIC AND MORE TRAFFIC HAVE A GREAT SUNDAY QUESTION? Y all ready WHO IN THE HELL IS BOB I WORK HERE NEVER HEARD OF A BOB AND ANYBODY THAT I WORK WITH NEVER HEARD OF BOB
Not a bad place and I liked the fact that they gave me a selection of cars in the same class even though I came without a reservation. Price seemed reasonable. The drawback for me was that I had to wait in a long line to get my car.
While the employees were pleasant enough, be sure to plan on spending a few hours here before you leave with your rental car. I rented a full size vehicle and waited over an hour to receive it, while I watched others who arrived after me get their cars almost immediately. It was very frustrating. Dollar's system of helping the customer based on the type of car they rented, as opposed to a normal line of first come first served needs to be fixed. The car was clean though, which is more than I can say for other companies I've rented from.
I booked at Thrifty at the base but my plane was late so I was redirected to the dollar because thrifty was closed. Of course I was offered full of insurance etc ... I refused everything despite the insistence of the woman (hence my 4/5 stars). I was given the amount to settle that I had left because I had paid a deposit on the internet and it corresponded, so I signed and I went to get my car. Super car, clean and pleasant to drive and that corresponded to what I booked. The return went really well and was really fast. I am surprised to read all these negative comments. Maybe I was lucky because I booked on Thrifty at the base (where I had a great experience two years ago)
ps: do not take the option that does not require you to return the car with full. Given the price of gas in the US it will cost you more to take the option than to fill up at the gas station 50m from the rental agency!
I was pleased with the experience UNTIL I got home and found a charge of $225: $75 MORE than the rental was supposed to be all together (and I had already paid the deposit). I was supposed to be emailed a receipt, which I never received. And when I contacted Dollar Rental, they said they could only see what I had paid online and that I would need to contact the local site. When I called them, the call went to voicemail (?) and the MAILBOX WAS FULL! I've submitted a claim online, but have not even received a confirmation email - so.... we'll see where this goes. Very disappointed.
Waited for an hour for the shuttle bus from the airport, 30 minutes in line for a car. I had a prepaid reservation and had to wait for them to clean a car in our category.
realy sucks.. Titto (says he is the manager at dollar LAX) was the most dis-respectful person i have ever met!! he treeted me and my family like garbage after asking him for help with our rental car- that wasnt the car we orderd. as a lawyer, and as a CEO in a big firm- that rent cars about at least 80 times a year (worldwide), i can assure that not my company and not our cliients or families will get near to the dollar rent a car. just because that guy Titto.
Good experience for me. I booked a mid-size and they allowed me to choose any vehicle from the midsize isle. Every car looked pretty clean and well maintained. Finally I chose one with Apple CarPlay. For a 15 buck daily rate (a deal I found online), it s awesome.
