A great place to enjoy Viking ships. There is a workshop where they make replicas of old Nordic boats. The place features a fine souvenir shop with metalworks. They have free (hopefully) car park nearby.
Located at the edge of a fjord, the museum is especially interesting for re-enactments and longboat cruises
Awesome place, stunning original and replica ships.
The best is that you can use/try everything from authentic clothing, to shipping and woodworking!
Did not go to the museum, but felt that the scenery outside the museum was great.
Next to the Viking ship that is being produced, you can visit it. Looking to the beach is the very wide Roskilde waterway. The waterfowl on the water is cool and you will also perform a diving show.
Although it is small, it has a lot of merit to have recovered and preserved ships and objects from more than 1000 years ago. It is worth the visit to the museum and the city.
The tour guide was engaging, knowledgeable, and spoke excellent English. The sailing/rowing trip was well with the additional cost.
I am a sailor, for obvious reasons such a museum is a treat for me.
A must for a visit to Denmark. There is no quida in Italian but a video that explains everything there is to know. You can also see the construction site where the carpenters reproduce the Viking ships.
We didn't go in the museum but walked around it. Even though I'm sure there's wonderful things inside, outside is just as nice! Especially on a nice sunny day.
Would definitely recommend going there!
By the end of it all you can go down to the ocean which is so clear and nice.
Great!
Film on the Vikings in French and all the explanations in French!
To visit fairly quickly (about 1 hour). Possibility to get on boats and dress up as a Viking! Our little girl loved this part!
Great view of the lake from the museum.
Entrance 90DKK per adult! Reasonable considering the cost of living in DK.
Even if you are not interested in Vikings or history in general, great place to visit, this is a must-visit if you are staying in Denmark (easy to get to from Copenhagen with cheap fast train travel)
From our visit to Copenhagen is the town that we liked the most and part of the fault, this small museum has it. Unbeatable location and very well maintained material. Possibility to watch an explanatory video in Spanish before starting the visit, lasts approximately 20 minutes. Ideal for children since at the end they have the possibility to dress up in the clothes of the time and get on a Viking ship.
I really enjoyed the time I spent at the museum. Granted it was the off season so most of the workshops were closed but there was still a lot to see.
Had an interesting tour with a good guide. Was educational
I was only in the free area. For one who is not interested in history it is not very interesting place. Still a nice place to enjoy the sun and sea.
This is a great place for families. There is plenty to learn and see. You can make your own little boats, see a replica being accurately made, and eat a good halibut sandwich. I enjoyed sailing with a team of about 10 oarsmen.
It explains the Viking history of Roskilde on real ships and their replicas
It is worth visiting this museum. The entrance fee is 120 crowns
Almost 30 visits since 1992. Great presentation by Prof. Capella.
Great experience if you are interested in boats or the Vikings. Very informative with fantastic staff to give you all the explanation you would need about Vikings and their lifestyle.
Will be able to see 5 sunken Viking boats that have been salvaged and actual sized model of the boats made using ancient toolings and methods. Be prepared to spend about 1-2 hours at this museum.
Very well organized, informative, interactive and fun. Museum for all ages. You leave without any doubt about the Viking people, not only about the boats but also about their culture.
Super cool place, have visited it many times over the last 15 years and there is always something new to learn about the Viking Age. Right now the museum is running a marine exhibition on how the 5 original ships had been restored.
Highly recommend to visit!
So much history to obtain from this place. A lot of activities for kids both outside and inside. Amazing such big boats they have been able to build so many years ago. Inside the kids can try out the clothes for from back then.
Very cool spot, definitely worth checking out if you have an interest in Viking culture
Loved it. Bought 2 viking knives and 2 Mjolner necklaces. The out door area is very interesting, the guys working by hand on the wood are very knowledgeable about Viking builds, tools, ages, and any kind of viking questions i had, i could have listened to them all day. If you like vikings, give this a visit, summer is best i think.
The sailing in a reconstructed ship is a wonderful experience as is the tour of the reconstructed ships, tying knots, floating your own ships. It would be nice if there was a larger quantity and variety of tools for making model ships though. The staff are very nice and great at explaining how everything works and the historical facts.
Very quiet and relaxing place. The exhibits are very well highlighted.
Very impressive museum with Vikings ships. Don't forget to check the schedule on their website. If you will be lucky, you can get a boat trip (from 1st of May to September, 30).
My grandson, a boy of 5 years, and I visited the Viking Ship Museum one summer-Thursday in glorious weather.
We took a boat trip - and everything we saw and tried made the visit a wonderful experience for both of us.
If we asked anything, we got friendly answers from talented and welcoming staff. And for both of us, the instructions and illustrations in the various departments were interesting / enlightening.
My little companion thinks I should write that everything was so clean, with no garbage in the area - I agree with him in it !.
My only appeal is the price: To get in, to sail ... but it was worth the money.
So when you can pay.
A great day for a pensioner and a 5 year old!
A good place for families, specially with children for their admission until17 years of age would be free of charge! 40DKK discount for students.
The main event for me was the best part, seeing the old viking s ships.
There is a video projection-remade ship you could borrow some viking clothes in and take pictures.
Nice material are exhibited throughout the place. The workshops can be fun, the place is soothing itself. All in all, maybe a bit expensive, but it s worth it.
The Viking Ship Hall, is designed by Professor Erik Christian Sorensen, and is beautifully located on to Roskilde Fjord. This is where you witness the Viking ships found in Roskilde Fjord. The Museum Harbour stands tall and magnificent with the collection of traditional Nordic wooden boats and the reconstructed Viking ships, and Skuldelev which were used by the locals for war, trading and fishing. It s an overwhelming sight witnessing of how the original ships looked 1,000 years ago.
A display of 5 Viking ships dating back to around 1000 AD, recovered from the sea bed around 1960. (that in itself is remarkable). There is an area children can dress up and 'sail' in a boat. The workshops are interesting where they make ships using similar tools to back in the day. Personally I found it over priced.
Just wonderful! Highly recommended also for families with interested children from four years!
Small but fine museum that is particularly suitable for families. Paint swords and shields, mint coins, build ships ... so many different things to do for the little ones. And the big ones learn something about the Vikings.
nothing exceptional, 5 ships (indeed parts of ships) on display on which an excellent park with exhibitions and films was built.
The museum tells the history of Denmark about the Viking Age
Very interesting to explore the past. Really worth a visit.
Great experience! A total immersion in the world of Viking ships. The guides are lovely, explain with passion and know their subject inside out. The exhibitions are accessible in several languages, Danish of course, but also English, German and French. You can take part in a drakkar tour, but you will have to "row" , literally!
A must-see for Vikings fans like me!
beautiful location on the fjord. interesting objects. be sure to take a tour: archeology can be thrilling like a thriller! the fascinating world of vikings is brought to you. the harbor with the reconstructed boats makes this world come alive again. an absolute museum experience. Another plus: the extremely well-stocked museum shop. highly recommended!
Stunning, simple in concept and unique. Gives a real inspiration get about the people who influenced the culture of a large part of Western Europe.
Very informative. 130 crowns entry is already steep and you can save. Outside area very interesting
Interesting place. Many educational places also use it for educational purposes - even from abroad. It works well that there is an indoor and an outdoor museum, so you can follow the old craft. At the same time, you can get out and rest in a Viking ship, which is very popular.
The museum itself is small. However, there is something to see. Around the museum there are many boats and Drakkars. Nearby there is a small island on which you can walk and eat something (but everything is closed early there).
Here are experiences for the whole family. Possibility to sail Viking ship, and see the original Viking ships in the museum
Very interesting and to highlight the replicas made at normal size.
We are already planning a new visit we did not finish at all ... you must be deeply impressed by the archaeologists' patience thank you for enriching us
Very interesting place to learn about Viking's boat and history, staff are very friendly and very interactive.. only open in the summer..
It is a museum about Viking ships. It has everything to see, learn about Vikings since its history. The room that actually made the boat It is a spacious place to walk around and is also a great place to relax.
Interesting museum where you can see partial reconstructions of 5 Viking ships. The original materials were found sunk near the place. Something expensive, we paid 15 / pers. with the university card. I do not consider it essential but it is curious if you want to spend a day outside of Copenhagen.
It's not that big, but if you like boats, definitely!
It is a pity they don't have so many interactive things anymore. But rowing a viking boat is still good fun.
Excellent experience, highly recommended for families. You learn lots about Viking boats and Viking livelihood in general.
Interesting but I was expecting more. There were almost no activities outside. The museum itself is quite nice and well presented.
Lovely place, lots of history, told so one can understand it.
Fascinating museum with people actually making Viking boats!
The truth is that only for this museum and for the cathedral it is worth approaching Roskilde. He tells you the story of the rescue of Viking ships that were used to block and protect the bay, and on his way they explain the construction techniques, the types of ships. There are audiovisuals in English and French, and activities for children such as writing their name with runes or trying on a Viking helmet ... In addition, the museum shop is better than others and has very interesting things. They told us that if you go in summer you can take a walk in one of the replicas, so we will have to go back
The Viking Ship Museum is a must . Be amazed at how old these amazing ships are. Very interesting and interactive museum. You can build your only mini ship , try some weaving , toast some sausages on the fire . Fabulous experience for the whole family. You can see these ships built in front of you , which is awesome to see . We also did the sail in a Viking Ship which was so fun to get out on the water . Highly recommend book early and go early. Fantastic adventures for everyone.
Wow. Magnificent. A bit expensive to see the same thing as outside. The description boards in French had a lot of tradu errors, it is necessary to refer to English to understand everything. Ex. They mixed the word "dead man" by slave.
But in general it is a nice place to see things from the past.
Like almost everything in Denmark, you have to pay to enter, but it is worth seeing how the Viking ships do with millenary techniques.
This museum actually consists of two parts: The 'inner museum' with the five original Viking ships
found at the bottom of the Roskilde fjord, and a very atmospheric and bustling 'outdoor museum' with the reconstructions. The indoor museum contains a good compact exhibition where the ships can be viewed from all sides and a number of partial exhibitions. The museum shop is very decent, with an excellent collection of books. The outdoor museum is a bustling harbor and wharf with many sailing ships, where you can see the development of the Viking ships and the ships thereafter. The staff is very knowledgeable, they can really tell you everything about viking and ship related topics. The nice thing is that some reconstructions still sail around too! A museum for really all ages, definitely worth a visit!
Expensive and not much there. Kids enjoyed dressing up and going on the pretend boats.
Really good museum - central exhibition of 5 ships was really good but so were the supporting workshops on the docks. Cafe excellent too!
