Utah State Tax Commission Review

I have phoned into the Utah state tax commission many times over the years as I operate multiple businesses. I realize no one likes to pay taxes so we seem to be ready for a fight expecting the state employees to change laws. Every time I have called I have had polite and courteous agents willing to help me with finding forms and changing or adding business tax information. I believe they are truly making efforts to keep customer service levels high.

Worthless state entity, organized crime at its best

It took them 3 years to revise my state tax return from 2014, and then say I owe $500+ dollars and then charge me late interest for their slow ability to process information, paperwork, and mail the needed changes, whomever processed this needs to be evaluated and replaced that can process this much quicker this office is a joke, and they do not know how to interact with people whether in person or on paper, if I could give them a negative score I would give them -10.

They just sent me a letter saying they are about to take out a lien against me for $31.21. Haha. I completely forgot about this during tax season. They will get their $31.21..... In pennies, dumped across whoevers desk I come to first.

Rude and not empathetic at all. They don't care to help, they want to get your number and solve it ASAP. Not willing to set us up on a plan and called the day after Christmas. Gave us a month to solve something that was an accident in the first place. Threatened to put a lien on our house and garnish my wages. The government needs to be regulated. Remember who you are public servants for.

The recorded answering message says their office is closed when I called during normal business hours.

Trying to get documents showing a tax lien has been satisfied. The gal I spoke to was very helpful and gave me all the info I needed.

Bunch of fat old slow women good for nothing else besides being fat and slow. There is a line 20 deep for MVED and about the same amount of windows with employees in them but only one of those windows is for MVED. Been here an hour and still have 4 people in front of me. Last thing i wanted today was to come and hang out for 2 hrs here. Typical government workers.

The workers are extremely unhelpful and disrespectful.

I've got to start out by saying it's a Taxing Authority. I'm not really fond of the place. However, taxes are a way of life and I have found them to be very fair and willing to work with people if the need arises.

I'm not going to recommend that you go visit them unless you have a tax problem. If you do - don't make the mistake of letting it drag on to ignore it simply makes it worse for you in the long run.

I had to get a copy of my 2018 tax return and Robin was so helpful and kind! I arrived at 8:30am and was out the door with my copy by 8:43am. The only part I wasn't a fan of was the extra $1 fee for using a card to pay the request charge. Otherwise, it was a fast and pleasant experience for it being tax related! Thanks, Robin!

Zero stars if possible!! Called multiple times to find out why it was taking 3 months to process my return. When I asked to speak to a supervisor told me they didn't have one..then they report to someone...and he wasn't in at 11:45 a.m. even though he's in the office 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Be prepared for no customer service, lies and more when dealing with the Utah Tax Department!

They are rude, condescending, threaten to press charges against me for questioning them when they wanted my personal information. On top of that were looking for the wrong person this whole time. They are nothing more than bullies coming from the big bloated government our Founding Fathers warned us about. Shame on them! If I could give them zero stars I would!

A horrible coercive entity that robs honest people of their hard-earned money through violence and threats of violence.

TAXATION IS THEFT!

Utah Tax stupidity at it's finest. Automobiles are taxed at the highest rates and re-taxed the same year if sold. Now they don't include mileage information on the title for vehicles more than 10 years old. Those of us with classic or higher end cars are left without state documentation. NOT acceptable.

I recently needed some help paying off my tax balance for 2018. A woman named Lynette, who was very friendly and patient, helped me transfer a payment this morning, as soon as it came into the system to help pay off part of my balance. Then I just called collections to pay off the rest. I am very thankful, happy, and impressed by how Lynette and the other staff handled my needs and treated me as a client. Thank you!!!

For some reason, Utah thinks it has a right to a portion of my money when ever I conduct a transaction... two consenting adults decide to make a business transaction, why is the state entitled to any portion of that?

At least during tax season, April 1 through April 17, I wish they would have people there to answer questions on the weekends. A lot of us have to work during the same hours they are available during the week.

As a business I deal with the USTC quite often including the MVED and I have to say, this year in particular I have received nothing but kind and helpful service from everyone!!! A special should out to the technical research dept and Maria and Emily in the MVED! Emily has the best laugh and Maria is always so kind with my requests, I get her a lot! Happy new year Utah State!!

Dealt with so many rude people! I was double charged when I paid my taxes...contacted utah tax commission to get a credit back on my card for the double charge. I literally had to jump through hoops! When I called the employee stated she saw the double charge but would need a bank statement showing it was actually taken from my account. So I emailed her my bank statement and never heard back from her. After a couple hours I emailed her back stating I would like a response because I just sent her my bank statement. Finally she replied with one sentance that states my supervisor is reviewing this and we will get back to you with an update . A few days goes by and I don t hear back so I email the employee again asking for a respense and she said it was approved and would take 2-4 weeks for the return to be sent back! It has now been over a month and no return...contacted tax commissiOn again to speak to someone a little more helpful and was informed the check was sent to me on April 20th. I never received the check and I have been informed that the check was somehow processed but I didn t receive or deposit a check! Now I once again have to send an email to some checkcopy.gov to see who cashed or deposited the check. All in all the worst customer service I have ever had to deal with! Never once was I rude or short with anyone I spoke with, but yet everyone I spoke to acted like I was inconveniencing them and were incredibly rude!! Utah state tax commission hires the rudest and most careless people!

I submitted a TC-69 Form to receive a Sales Tax ID number; which I had to do via fax or mail. I faxed it in and waited a couple of days and called to confirm that it was received. No one was willing to check and said to call back in 15 days. I called back in 15 days and they didnt have record of my fax. I am now starting the process over and we need it quickly. You would think we could employ better technology here. It is funny, when the tax commission wants something from us, they demand it right then.....when we need something from them; we will eventually get it if we cry, wait, and scream long enough.

Whenever I go there to transfer a license or have a question they do a great job with friendly attitude. Like that!

I spoke with a rep that was extremely rude, the question i had may have been dumb to him, but to me it was very important! he was very condescending, I said i don't want to speak with you, he sent me back to hold for 30 minutes, I'm very upset, what a horrible experience! It's nice to know our tax dollars are being wasted on very bad phone agents!

In the past week, I've spoken to 5 different service representatives. Every one of them was impatient, short and unclear. Every phone call I would hang up the phone more confused than before I spoke to them. The biggest problem I had was that each representative gave me different information and instruction than the previous. Not to mention, after I would ask even one clarifying question, each of the assistants would become strangely frustrated and extremely impatient, then repeat the same insufficient information. Needless to say, our conversation would then go in circles and I would make up some excuse to end the pointless phone call.
The worst part is: My solution ended up being much simpler than any of them said. I only figured it out because I gave up and called our accountant. My advice to anyone trying to call the Utah State Tax Commission for answers is to call at least 3 times, know that they are going to be rude no matter what you say, then ask the same questions each phone call. Afterwards, compare information and go with the most consistent answer and hope it's right.

I got a notice that I owe and I dont know what for and why on december?? So calling to verify it's not a scam but you guys to pick up

Wait what!!!! A 5 star. You bet. Life is hard for everybody and these guys have a tougher job than we might think. We were desperate after hitting a wall with the tax commission but once we put a resolve their specialist got it done super fast. I dealt with about 4 ladies, given you have the information they need they were able to guide me literally one step at a time to get my big problems fixed. Over the weeks I've contacted this office 6 times by phone and 4 via email. All communications were met with professionalism. One agent even called me back after I was on hold and had to hang up because I had to tend to my toddler. I wasn't expecting that, that agent was very thoughtful in calling me back, she didn't have to, I'm certain that she did that on her own.

Paid our sales tax in full of over $2200. The rep didn't attach it in their system and left it on hold. So they tried to put a lien on our car and made us pay a penalty because it was "late/ on hold" even though it was fully deducted from our account for 2 months. Made us pay another penalty of $56 for their mistakes.

As a taxpayer, I was enthused when I heard Utah would be putting tax revenue toward fighting opiate addiction. I expected legalization of medical cannabis, but all I got was a bunch of stupid billboards

Hanging up on tax payers that are requesting the status of their refund is absolutely unacceptable. You need to fire James Shaw, the agent I spoke with, and pay the amount that is owed to me and my family.

You're just another number to them. Just try calling and have them look you up by name, their system is set up with numbers only. They don't care.

Answered all my questions about what forms I need to fill out for sales tax. Very helpful.

Very fast answering my call and helped me get exactly what I needed.

Been dealing with them for years, for my clients. Typically everyone I get on the phone is very helpful and knowledgeable. Better to deal with then most state tax commissions.

They were very helpful and I was in and out of there in under ten minutes!!

So many times I have turned my business taxes in on time, only to get a letter and fine for turning them in late. It doesn't matter when I turn them in, they always record it as late.

I always fight it, and they always let it off. But the constant need to contact them to let off silly fines is annoying.

In addition, they're requiring so many documents for my personal tax return again. I already sent them my W2s, ID, etc. But they're holding off my return unless I provide documentation AGAIN. If I don't provide it in time, they'll take MORE taxes.

Sorry, but this is bureaucracy at its worst.

I agree with others. Terrible experience dealing with Kim. I cannot believe this person was hired to work with the public. She does not listen to you, talks over you, interrupts you, and cannot give you straight answers. Obviously on a pathetic power trip.

Took 2 years of jumping thru hoops before they realized THEIR error

Because of a mistake on their end, I will not receive my tax return for 2 months and their lack of customer service should also be noted. Don't call because even if they pick up after waiting on hold for 10 minutes, they'll treat you like you're the problem.

Very nice people doing everything possible to help you with your tax liability. It's frustrating work so please be patient with the staff.

They not here to help us, they only want to line their pockets. Stay on top of your things so you can avoid them

If only people who had a good experience would post on here then it would be more accurate as I have always had a great experience. Quick and friendly service from all who work there. Keep up the great work!

I visit this office often and the MVED line is the best! They know what they are doing and make my trip short and to the point.

Credit where credit's due, I had a really tough situation here.

I'm not thrilled about the amount I had to pay, but they had great service and were very helpful throughout.

Darwin was particularly helpful and good to work with.

They run this department as well as a tax agency can be run, and I appreciate the effort they make to be polite and make the tax payers feel taken care of.

They assisted me with everything and helped me getting it all handled. Job well DONE!!!

Awesome service, I had 3 employers from last year never sent me any of my w2 forms , so I could not file my taxes. A older Latino gentleman helped me print my w2s for all 3 jobs ,the service didn t cost me anything. Grateful to that gentleman for his warm service it was much appreciated especially cause I took hours off work to get it done and I was stuck with out those forms. Thank you sir .

Julie was extremely helpful and patient in answering some of my business tax questions through the phone, the wait to get answered was about 20 mins but it was worth it to finally have some clarification on my questions.

I called in today. The lady I spoke with was super helpful and answered all of my questions.

Disappointed by the service for the amount of money that we spend there.
