Lovely gallery, with great artwork, which takes you on a journey through time, history and the world. Something to interest everyone. May take more than a day, if you want to take in every piece of artwork. Well worth a visit.

The National Gallery is a must see and is an exempt charity relying on donations and memberships, for continued funding. We did see some of the same paintings as we did on our 1st trip, a few years ago, but well worth the stop. The location is great, being in the vibrant neighbourhood of Trafalgar Square, with the famous lions and many things happening on the square and beside the fountains.

Lots of pictures especially belonging to italian renascentists. You can also have lunch or coffee at one of the restaurannts inside and chat about art. I need to go again to review some of the paintings and to get to know the story behind it.

I am not a massive art person but my friend my friend who is invited me to come along. Evenso I have given it 5 stars because it really is impressive on a grand scale and all for free (unless you donate) You can view paintings of Shakespeare Kings and Queen etc. There are also interactive areas where you can learn in a fun way which is great for kids. One of London's greatest institutions.

Great place. Excellent range of exhibits. Despite numerous stewards, loads of unruly school groups, and people blocking exhibits taking endless selfies... Felt the stewards should take a more active control of the rooms they are in.

Wonderful serene cool calm little island in a bustling busy city..the grimy grey city full of the madding crowds rushing about, tourists and shoppers, nair do wells, and Whitehall chaps they all walk past this place looking for treasure.. for gold on the streets...when in here are all the people who went before them immortalised in paint bearing silent witness to the short time we all spend here...its worth a visit...its free...and makes you reflect on vanity and pomp...and on the touching frailness of our lives

Fantastic. We started at the top floor (Tudors). It was like walking through every history book you've ever read. Utterly breathtaking. Then it was the Stuarts, Hanoverians and onto the Victorians before finally rushing through the 20th Century. We were running out of time.
We had coffee in the Portrait Cafe (basement) and later returned for lunch. All very good. Having spent a day in there and realising we hadn't seen everything we wanted, we left to get the tube before the London chaos that is rush hour.
We will definitely come back again and this time maybe start at the bottom and work our way up. Hopefully we'll eventually get to meet where we were. Brilliant day out and highly recommended. Here's just a few photos. Every portrait in the gallery has a really informative note next to it. Very helpful.

One of the 3 free museums in London. Definitely worth a visit to get a break from being outside, and especially if you love art. Most of the art is 16th century to 1930's. There are a few older works, and a few more recent works. I was incredibly impressed by the Van Gough and Monet exhibits that were on display when I was there. Since it is free, throw in some change to the collection boxes that help support the gallery.

This is an excellent art museum with a well designed and thought out layout. It has a huge collection of rare, special, and important works. It is easily accessible with a coat check, several restrooms, and recently renovated and redesigned entrance. Would strongly recommend for any visit to London.

My favourite museum in London. Great art, amazing collection and very interesting temporary exhibitions. Also like the restaurant and the coffee shop in the new West wing.
Check the smart phone app. - it's very helpful.

Almost unbelievable collection of world famous art. Amazing is an understatement. Plus, unlike museums in the US, the British really seem to remove the barriers between art and viewer. The works all seemed very approachable.

The National Gallery is a must and one of my favourites in London. It houses so many great pieces and you can get so close. Even those who claim to know nothing about art will find a painting that they know and be wowed. It can be difficult to navigate your bearings around the rooms but that is actually part of the magic...you always get out eventually. Ha ha! The cafes and restaurants are also great quality and clean. Exhibitions are always so clever and well put together. Always great value too.

The paintings all look very similar. Needs more variation in the art styles displayed. Very crowded and difficult to find your way around although the security guards are quite helpful.

Some amazing works in here. Top for me was The Fighting Temaraire by Turner and of course the Haywain by Constable. But for me the most wonderful are the Canalettos which are simple superb artwork.

Could spend all day here without fully appreciating each piece of art. All genre and styles throughout the many rooms. Just mind-blowing standing in front of the many masterpieces on display. And the best bit - free entry.
