My family adopted a small dog two years ago that the humane society had in their files to be for a single pet home only. They did not share that information with me at all, they only recommended we keep him away from the other dogs when we met him. Since then my family has enjoyed lots of love with our pet, who has never displayed aggression towards nearby birds, cats, or dogs and enjoys the yard with our two pet hens. My family was looking forward to adding another small dog to our loving home since the experience with adopting our current dog was fantastic. Unfortunately, when I made an appointment to adopt today, I was told they would not release a dog to my household because of their "single pet only" file that I was never made aware of. Most recently I've witnessed my dog positively socializing with two small female dogs and one larger male dog in a home setting. If he was not good with other dogs before it seems he has drastically changed, but sadly Hawaiian Humane Society does not find this possible. Perhaps our dog shows no aggression to other animals now because he is now in a loving home and no longer in a cage-ridden deathhouse. It would have been nice to know this in advance, for sure. What if we bought a dog earlier, when he was "aggressive"? I'd rather adopt than shop, but this place just limited our options and greatly disappointed my children.
EDIT: I learned about adopting my dog from friends who fostered him. We even took him to visit their property. They have dogs as well and there were no problems. A peaceful environment is everything.
