Hit and miss. Hit and miss. Sometimes quite good, sometimes pretty ordinary.
It's a pseudo-British pub, put together with kit from your standard Ye Olde English Pub Fittinges Shoppe. Check out the ceiling ' beams' - talk to a carpenter if you can't see what I mean. And yet . . . it's still an OK venue. Conveniently located. Comfortable. Well located for people watching. And the air conditioning is a downright blessing in Summer.
They do have some decent beer on tap (although British imports are generally served too cold), but they also stock the appalling Stella and its local equivalent, Furphy. As for food, I've seen whole plates left behind. Not game to try it myself.
Customer service ranges from engaging to enraging. You just never know what you'll get. Staff aren't actively hostile but often seem lost, unfocused or preoccupied (with what?). In general their role seems less one of customer service, and more of shrinkage control as they whip around busily chasing near-empty glasses without a glance, a smile or a friendly word. Yet there ARE great staff who bob up from time to time.
During the afternoons, the clientele seems to have a lot of Aussie tourist visitors. Not really a locals bar. On occasion there's also a real problem with idiot parents bringing in their feral children around dinner time. Tip to management: if I carry on and bother your customers, your security crew will bounce me out -- so why do you ignore it when kiddies are bothering your customers?
Pub prices seem pretty much top of the city, so value for money is . . . average. Friday happy hour with selected $6 pints can, however, redress some of that.
In the end, the Wheelbarrow and Elephant has four-star potential, but their present business model isn't likely to see them achieve it. But -- and it's an important but -- if you're passing through during the day and need somewhere to spend a little time, do stop in. It'll never be your local, but can still be a good spot to have a quiet pint or catch up with a friend.
