Over the years I have at one time or another subscribed to all of the various major Internet providers. None of them provided what I considered to be good (or even decent) service. Smithville, on the other hand, has been great. The people have been excellent to deal with, the service has been reliable, and the price is reasonable. You can't ask for more than that.
Well I waited to write a review because I wanted to test the service out. I can tell you this we switched to fiber and LOVE IT! I work from home with ZERO issues and have been very pleased with Smithville Telephone and their service. The installers were great as well, quick and friendly. There was on questions they couldn't answer. I really do appreciate you and your company. We are thankful to have your service
Best customer service and support and the best speeds.
There was a technical problem and Austin from IT Help stayed with me on the phone for an hour and a half late in the evening to figure out what was wrong. We finally got it to work and he was sooooo patient and so nice. He made a bad situation so much better and I didn't have to feel frustrated because I knew he was actively working with me and did not give up until the problem was fixed. Every IT department everywhere should meet those standards,
I wanted to take advantage of their free installation offer with a 12-month agreement for gigabit internet in my new home, but since my home had installation, but only up to 300mbs, they would not honor the free installation and instead was going to charge me $300 to replace a card.
They were willing to place a box outside of my home (with the correct card), install an outlet and run a fiber line into the home for free - but would not swap out a pre-existing set-up and card for the same promotion, which makes no sense since it's 99% less work. So unfortunately, I am being punished due to the previous owner already having the house installed.
Smithville just turned away someone who was willing to sign a 12-month agreement due to this maddening inconsistency. Beware if you buy a home that already has Smithville installed as they will upcharge you tremendously but will give all the bells and whistles if the home does not have a pre-existing line. Super unfortunate as I really wanted to give them a try over Xfinity and support a local business.
Describing my experience.....Hmm not the best. The image below should say it all. An (F) slower then 93% of the US. Its 2016 soon to be 2017 and I'm stuck with this slow internet. Its really frustrating, YouTube videos can be played but only in 480p that load fine, but 720p to 1080p plus take a long time. Or if anyone reading this is a gamer like me. Good luck trying to play, When I'm playing a game if I pull up Instagram or Facebook automatic lag and impossible to play. If you have any other internet provider I'd look else where. When downloading music or games or movies. Takes days to download 3-4 on average. They told me a good 6-8 years ago that we would have faster internet. Well they lied to my face each year when I asked. If you have a different provider I would try them. I've wasted so much time just waiting for everything to load. Words can't explain the support they give. They advertise this fiber optic all over the place. Well congrats you've fooled tons of people. And if anyone at Smithville is going to respond to this, Please only respond when I have Fiber Optic Internet installed and running at my house. Thanks
If you have any other provider available take them. We have dsl, and no other provider to switch to. We only get internet about half the time and no matter how much I've called and complained and tried to figure out what's wrong they simply say it must just be your internal hookups and that's it. Even tho I've told them repeatedly it's the modem that I had to buy from them that's trash. One day we will have fantastic internet, and the next we will have absolutely nothing. All the while our house phone works perfectly. Yep most definitely and internal line problem when they're hooked to the same line. They also won't send anyone out to do anything without cheating an outrageous fee even when they didnt do a single thing. I wish I had the experience anyone else has seem to had with this company but I unfortunately have had nothing but Bill's we didnt get to use.
I gave a 'poor-fair' rating only because there was not a lower rating...
I moved here around 4 months ago and purchased Smithville's 3MB DSL connection. In that time I have had 36 internet outages (it's actually more but I didn't start out tracking them...) and have regular periods where I only get between .5 and 1MB. I have spent hours on the phone with their technicians, had them at my house, and even went to their store to replace the brand new modem the initially gave me. I understand that I can not always expect to get 3 megs, but I should be getting consistent bandwidth at least, if not more than 1/3rd of the bandwidth I am paying $75 per month for. When I pressed a technician about it, he said that it was 'network saturation'. When I asked what they plan to do about it, he stuttered and stammered and basically said that it wasn't going to happen. I guess you can do that when your customers have no place else to go.
Smithville Telephone was prompt to repair my parent's phone service as my mother is disabled and is was very important to have phone service. Highly recommend them if you are unsatisfied with your current service.
My internet speeds have dropped dramatically over the past year, going from 6 mb/s to roughly 1 mb/s on smithville copper. Though it used to be fine, they've told us there's nothing they can do to fix it.
According to their map the Cadillac zone was supposed to be complete by end of Q1 in 2018. Since there is only a couple weeks left in the quarter and I haven't received an update, i decided to call. (on the preregistered list) Come to find out that the build plan hasn't been approved yet and they're now projecting end of summer/fall till it's available in my area. I wouldn't be as pissed if you'd communicate more with your potential customers. Some of us really hate cable and are depending on you for fiber service. I would've given you a one start, but you get an extra one for polite phone reps.
(Still no update. minus another star)
Pushed back yet again and blaming it on the weather... how do you not factor in average weather for your projections?
Just finished getting fiber optic from them in my area over in ellettsville. Absolutely love the speeds, definitely happy with my internet speed and the price!
I moved to a rural area in Greene County, Indiana (near Crane) in August 2012, and Smithville Fiber was the only company that offered internet service in my area. With no other options, we gave them a call and learned that they didn t offer a majority of their services to residents in my area. So, we had no other choice but to settle for a internet package that wasn t worth the price they charged. In fact, it was the slowest moving internet I ve ever endured in my entire life. We couldn t stream videos, and during high peak times we were lucky if it worked at all. I also want to add that this wasn t the only faulty service they sold us. Upon moving into our new home, I also purchased a landline account due to poor cell phone signal in my area. Needless to say, I was astonished when this simple service barely worked either! Apparently, my landline phone worked through a wire system that was buried underground. My problem with this ancient, technological method, is each time it rained, I couldn t use my landline phone because of the loud humming sound it made. I think the wires were getting wet or something???? Anyways, despite all the constant aggravations, I hung in there with Smithville for several years. I kept assuming that they would update their system in the near future; but that day never arrived. Luckily, AT&T saved the day and now I have packaged deal that includes cable, internet, cellphone, and a landline phone for a relatively low price that is totally worthwhile. Finally, my days of being inconvenienced by a company who offers poor quality services are over. I wish I could give them zero stars, but I m going to be nice, and give them 2 stars; because the poor service they provided me with was better than nothing at all.
I waited patiently for three years for the promise of "fiberoptic" ... THE fastest thing around ... I anticipated, I waited, and when I finally saw that the installation had been completed, I called to set up fiber optic for my home... guess what ... I was not among the privy people who had fiber optic run down their road (and not one time in those previous 3 years did anyone ever say it might not be run/or available to each person. Needless to say (I work at home and desperately needed fast internet for my job) I was ... to put it nicely UPSET ... I sent an email to Smithville and whoever the powers that be happened to be .... and was told that "whoever" didn't approve it to run on my road. I suggested they get OUT of their conference room and go out and talk to real people (which also did not happen). Finally, I chucked everything connected with Smithville and now use my personal hotspot on my phone for my internet connection. It works great and no hassles with being told it isn't available .... YOU lost out Smithville fiber optic ..... loser and you will continue to lose as I know of others who have moved on to bigger and better internet connections that don't charge an arm and a leg and actually WORK............I too say good riddance .... I am thankful to no longer be tied to Smithville for any reason whatsoever ... YOU LOSE AGAIN ....I would give NO STARS if that were possible but for some reason ONE STAR is a necessity ... it will stand for the local personnel who work in my area who are indeed great people ... they can't help what their company does or does not do.
Fantastic speeds on internet. Even with my crappy computer, the connection speed is through the roof. It's unfortunate that all the bad reviews are people on DSL, because this is a great company that employs local people.
Smithville phone doesn t work frequently however this time there phone service is down how does a phone company operate when they have no phone ???? All contact numbers busy signal several hours so far
I am so tried of hearing about what they now call "Smithville Fiber" and their dedication to ALL their rural residential customers. They say we should understand construction decisions being financially viable according to customer revenue. Well we have fiber here, they just won't connect us. They even asked to take down two of our trees in our front yard because fiber was being installed. We agreed thinking we would finally get fiber service as stated back in 2009. Wrong...it is not profitable enough for the company so we still have 3 Mbps download and 0.24 Mbps upload speeds on a good day. I was even told I was lucky to have that because I am located too far away and they were surprised I was "upgraded" to that speed. Smithville, this is the 21st century and services should reflect that for all your customers including rural residential customers. Quit making statements that simply are not true. We get it...it's all about the bottom line!
Great people and great service. Fast and friendly technicians. Smithville has been named a top 100 broadband company in the nation for the 4th year in a row. Just recently switched over to their new STV product and I couldn't be happier. If you are tired of all of the drama and hidden fees associated with national providers, I would highly recommend giving Smithville a call. They are also highly involved with the local community and a main sponsor of IU athletics. Smithville greatly helps out the surrounding area with their charity work as well. Great company, great services.
They double charged my uncle and nursing home for my grandmothers phone in her room. He brought it to their attention and they done nothing about it. This went on for a few years. Once he noticed this, he canceled his enternet with Smithville and then joined REMC for their fiber. I have done the same thing.
Edit: This is their response as normal (look below). They don t care that they have charged two individuals for the same service for YEARS. Not one party has been reimbursed for Smithville s mistake. What a great company they are.
Constantly cuts in and out. I will be watching a show or playing a game then the internet is gone. They said it s our router. Got a new router and still does the same thing. Would not recommend.
We have occasional issues with speed but overall after the horror stories I have heard from family members who have Comcast, I m more than happy to deal with occasional buffering and slow times. I ve heard of people paying insane amounts for their service and getting their wallets gouged without warning so I m going to just say I m grateful for what I have and that s just my personal experience. Also we switched bank accounts and my husband never called to update them and instead of us waking up one day no service they actually called to let us know there was an issue. Some places will just shut you down and leave you to figure it out when you turn on the tv and your service is gone. So it definitely has positive attributes as a service provider.
Couldn't help me because I need to get my own equipment, which is a real inconvenience. I had to settle for the other place because of some difficulties here.
I'm a student, and Smithville consistently screws me over when I can't access or submit online assignments. It doesn't matter if you care about your customers if you can't provide the service you're supposed to. Thanks for setting me up for failure.
Smithville's Fiber Internet is the fastest I've ever had the pleasure of using. No lag and very few outages EVER. The first ISP I've ever had that you can talk to a real person in about 30 seconds or faster when calling for billing questions or tech support. I also like that they're active in the communities they serve and donate a good amount of money to noble causes in these communities.
Thought Smithville would be different than your normal cable company but it's more of the same. Without on demand options we were told that most people get an Apple TV or fire stick to make that available through individual tv channel apps. Purchased both for our TV's only to later be told that they didn't offer streaming through those apps. What is the point of paying a premium price for TV and internet if you can't even catch up on shows you missed? Once our contract expires I doubt we will be keeping this service.
Will not do any business with them they can't seem to give an answer when it comes to their fiber optic on when it'll be in the area even though they tried to get me to sign up for it for the last 15 years
Very fast, very reliable. Have only had 2 small blips in service: one was instantly fixed via a 7pm phone call, and one was fixed via an 8pm phone call and a free technician visit before lunch the next day.
They don t make you rent a modem like Comcast; just plug in a WiFi router of your choice.
Customer service feels like talking to a local business, which is extremely refreshing.
For what it s worth I m a Fiber customer in a neighborhood with fiber infrastructure pre-built, so others mileage may vary. But I m a very satisfied fiber customer and Smithville has my full recommendation.
If you like non-stop drops and hours of no service each night this is the Internet for you! They are so concerned with getting fiber optic to new customers that anyone in rural areas with be stuck watching a loading bar for hours. There is no need to call customer service (I have them on speed dial) as they are aware of the drops and it s out of their hands . If we had any other option we would be on it. Praying REMC fiber makes it to us soon!
Service was great for first few months but drops out multiple times per day now. Repeated call have yielded no results, no action. Disappointing for the premium price of service.
I've been on smithville internet for as long as I can remember. I used to pay full price for their slowest DSL which would hardly stream videos without issues. I made a call to see when the heck we were going to get fiber like every other person out here other than me.. and they tell me they have no plans to upgrade to fiber but we can have a free broadband upgrade because they gave a free broadband upgrade to the highest speed available to everyone in my area (other than me). Even after that.. I wait days for games to download. I've lived in the same house my whole life.. when we initially got internet through them they still messed with blue marble. Over the years I see fiber moving in.. I've waited patiently. Smithville has a monopoly on my area near gosport/quincy. I would LOVE to switch over to Endeavor from cloverdale but their service cuts out about 1 mile north of here. Everyone who lives out here and has endeavor has fiber.. smithville NEVER EVER EVER came to my area with fiber. I don't think they plan to. I've been calling them asking for years now. My parents are selling the house and moving on, and I will be as well.. and all I can say is good riddance.
It's okay. Leaps and bounds better than Comcast, no doubt. The pricing is consistent, I don't have to call them every three months to keep from getting ripped off, that part is great. Customer service is decent and the installation team was wonderful. We've had service for a few years. There's a couple drawbacks. One is that the connection isn't perfect. It's a bit like DSL in that it seems to slow down at peak times. It's still fast, but noticeably not *as* fast. The other drawback is that every few months the internet service just goes down for a bit. Sometimes it's obvious. There's a storm and fiber is fragile. Other times I have no idea what happened.
But still, if you can choose between this and Comcast, it's no contest. Way better and, most of the time, way faster. When we switched, it was cheaper, too.
I have the 3MB DSL service and it's horrible. They charge a generous $88 per month for this speed-challenged internet and landline phone. I could have 20 times faster internet with Comcast for the same price. Anyways, I live less than 1mile from Smithville HQ and they informed me via a lengthy email chain that unless they get more government grants, they have no intention of laying anymore fiber, especially not Southwest of Ellettsville. I asked if they put any of these outrageous monthly payments back into funding expansion, i.e. laying more fiber, and that is when they stopped responded to my emails. They can advertise they are the "Gigabit Network" but I guess that only applies to homes already wired with their fiber.
The absolute worst internet I ve ever had, the router doesn t hold an IP address at all constantly kicking me off the internet and it s super slow. If I m on Netflix and someone else hooks to the WiFi you can say good bye to Netflix or wherever your watching, will be switching to something else ASAP and they have fiber on our house but they won t hook it up for us
HORRIBLE! We were told for YEARS that we were getting fiber. NOPE, Smithville always makes fake promises to rural families that their internet won't be 5 mbps. Why don't you own up, or don't charge us the same price!
