I have been in seceral times with chest pains, er dr asks if I had stints put in, told him no and he said I should have 2 years ago, I get admitted next morning heart dr comes in tells me "you have dead tissue around the heart, there's nothing we can do" then sends me home. Never have had good treatment from any of the heart drs at this hospital, they can change there name all they want but still same employees same treatment. Will never go back to this hospital again and tell everyone about the experience I've had with them and advice them not to go.

If I could give zero stars I would. When arriving to the ER, I could not walk, was extremely dizzy and disoriented. The intake registration desk still made me sit and try to fill out forms, which I could not do. Then I was asked to walk back with the nurse. I could not do and ran into walls, there was never an offer of a wheelchair. I was expected to change by myself and after the doctor visit I was left alone, told to get dressed and could leave. I was still extremely disoriented and dizzy and fell on the bathroom floor trying to dress myself. No one walked me to the waiting room and no one ensured I had someone to pick me up. I walked out of the hospital alone, running into walls because I was dizzy. My ride found me walking through the parking lot confused trying to find him.

My Primary DR referred me to Dr Trempy at the SMM...

My Primary DR referred me to Dr Trempy at the SMMC Pain Clinic. He diagnosed me with a bulging disc, two herniated discs, arthritis, and spinal stenosis. He did an epidural for my bulging disc, A couple rounds of shots for my herniated discs. He then did three radio frequencies on three of four nerves that needed it.He told me to set up an appt with HIM, when the fourth nerve became more of a problem.

I tried to set up my appt.with him, as I was told, I called the PC, asked for an appt.with Dr. T. I did ask to be seen before the first of the year.
While sitting in the exam room, 100% expecting Dr. T, a nurse came in to do my appt anyway. She had obviously never even glanced at my chart before coming in the room When I became sure she was not familiar with my case, I told her I was there to see Dr. T and have a radio frequency done on my fourth nerve. She asked me where it hurt. I pointed to where it started and showed her the areas the pain was going.
After about a second she says, "No, that's not it."
According to a Dr it WAS the problem, so she either didn't know the diagnosis and/or treatment, ignored the Dr's diagnosis and treatment plan, or overruled the Dr.
She finally gets to the bottom sheets of my chart, does a triple take at one certain page, and says meekly, "Oh...you have two herniated discs."
Unprepared, unprofessional, and entirely unacceptable.
My bill showed my service provider was Dr Don Richter. I have NEVER met this man, and he has surely never examined me. From what I understand he was supposed to be supervising the nurse.
If he had talked to her before the appt she would have been prepared, knew my condition, and that the next move for my treatment had already been decided by a surgeon.
I called the mgr of Midwest Anesthesia LLC., (both SMMC & MWA claim the nurse and Dr. R as "theirs"), who sent the bill, and asked her How the nurse missed so much in my appt when all of the answers were in my chart, AND IN HER LAP. And, how if Dr. R supervised her prior to the appt how did she not seem to know anything about my condition. She had no answers for either question, but to call her back in a week.
The next time I asked the same questions, each answer started with the word maybe. "Maybe...the nurse wasn't given time to read your chart before your appt.". "Maybe...Dr R talked to her after your appt." Talking about an appt after the fact is completely useless. It is just hearing about the appt., not of supervising it.
The bill from MWA was repaid to me quickly. while SMMC and SMMC Pain Clinic want to do is tell me how they are right. I was told for 4.5 months changing appts was PC's Mgr, Beth's "Policy" it was called a policy by people in Beth's office and by the Patient advocate. Only until 6/1/16 was "policy" walked back to "common practice" In a letter from the Patient Advocate.
Then, on Thurs, june 9th at 11:32 I got a call from the HR Director's asst. and a hospital administrator. They want to talk about my issues with their facilities. I told them I was at work, but would be glad to stop by afterwards. I told them I was tired of having to start at the beginning of my story every time a new person wants to stick their nose in it. They both told me how much they new about my complaints.
I asked them a question directly from their rejection of settlement letter to me. The letter indicated that it was "common practice" to use a mid-level level associate for "appts like mine." So, I asked them "what kind of appt did I need?"
There was a few seconds of complete silence, I'm sure while they stared blankly at each other, when the ADMINISTRATOR threw a tantrum any five year old would be proud to call their own. "W-W-We know about your Stuff!" "Y-Y-You just leave us alone." And " Y-You just quit calling us."
I would think their administrators should be able to control themselves a bit better, but not at SMMC!
To restate my opinion of the entire SMMC facility, Unprepared, unprofessional, and entirely unacceptable.
I could not post this with no stars so disregard the one I had to give it.

My wife, Susanne, & I just had colonoscopies with Dr. Jeffrey Young, MD at Shawnee Mission Hospital on 7/14/16 & 7/21/16 am. The nurses were absolutely fabulous, and the doctor very professional, both had fantastically great bed side manors. I was feeling a little nervous or apprehensive at first, then the nurses (& sign-in young lady) really coddled both of us. I called them the "Smiley Nurses". I almost feel like, I should stop back to visit them, but I know they are too busy. Thank you! for making our procedures as good as possible. Peter
PS: All was good the next day, No problems !

After a family death I was in the Behavioral Health Unit. Overall, it helped me, but several staff were rude, unkind or dismissive. Many staff never made eye contact or smiled. The worst issue, however, was the group leaders. Some were just neophytes or under-trained, but others did actual harm (Jerry e.g.)
By arrogance and complete incompetence . One staff (Melissa) was verbally abusive and very rude, but denied it when it was reported to the Charge Nurse.
She has been there for four years, according to her, and that is scary. Another patient had her meds withheld as a control tactic. The staff refused to give me an evaluation form.

All I have to say is run as fast as you can from the Environmental Services Department it was the most exhausting stressful position that I have ever had in my life a lot of micromanaging
and intimidation and discrimination Charlie (head of the Environmental Services Department) and Carmen (supervisor for room care) were the worst if this department is short staffed you will not be able to transfer to another department after 6months this is what the company tells you but it is not true they will not let you transfer period and will write you up to make sure that you can't transfer if you are not a Latino you are at the bottom of the priority list I regret working here terrible terrible place to work McDonald's would have been a better career move

The birthing center is pretty and that's the only good thing about it. I did not have the baby, but my sister in law did. From the moment we got there, we were treated very rudely by the nurses and then blatently ignored. We were never told when the baby arrived and stayed in the waiting room for several hours while never fully knowing what was going on. Bad hospital. I could also say how terrible the main building has been towards my boyfriend's mother, but I have said my piece. Please don't go there.

I've been in and out of SMMC (or off campus physic...

I've been in and out of SMMC (or off campus physicians associated with them) for a wide variety of procedures and "those things what ail me" over the past 50 years (my health was normal until, approximately, the age of 9). To my recollection, I have never, EVER, received less than exemplary care whether an "out or in" patient at SMMC.

Were I to have an issue with the cost, I'd certainly NOT choose to blame the staff. The staff have NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR CHARGES. NOTHING. I'd be more inclined to blame patients nationwide who, whether unemployed, uninsured, come bearing entitlement issues or are just plain apathetic, have chosen to skip out on paying as if they're eating at 24 hour diner after a late night of partying in their early 20's.

Or you could also blame the:
cost of living
cost of maintenance
cost of new equipment (there to help you)
cost of malpractice insurance thanks to 90% of lawsuits (probably) being frivolous
cost of ludicrously worded small print beginning with "unless," "except," "however," etc., found on
most all insurance policies issued in the U.S.

None of the things I've mentioned are the fault of the medical staff, let alone the billing departments in ANY hospital, in ANY city, in ANY country.

Having held a position 11 years as what I called "being paid to be verbally abused by customers over the phone" (i.e.: taking INBOUND calls as a Customer Service Representative) and having HAD to deal with said customers with a "smile in my voice" or risk losing my job; it's possible that I have more empathy than the average patient. The irony is that before the customer service position, I worked for 7 years paying claims at an insurance office. Medical insurance. I had to stop working there as saying, "I'm sorry but, no," over and over again, got to me. So, yes, I understand some of your frustrations. I DO believe that some of you HAVE received less than the quality of care you feel you deserve. It shouldn't happen but I realize it does. And you should speak up AT THAT MOMENT. Ask to speak with (not at) someone in charge. If you're in a doctor's office, start researching for a new one as soon as you get home.

I hope I haven't sounded presumptuous, entitled or that I think I'm more special than anyone else. Because I'm nooooooope...I'm not. I'm very normal...depending on who you ask. : ]
And medical bills? Yep. I've had my fair share.

I was unexpectedly hospitalized over a weekend in Nov. Excellent care from a caring staff. Though it was Saturday arrangements were made to start my chemo that day. The only disappointment was a lack of spiritual support, not even access to church services via TV. Scheduled surgery in Feb again excellent physical care but no indication this was anything but a public hospital. It was a contrast as a few weeks earlier I had been a patient at Harris Methodist Hospital in Texas and almost everyone from housekeeper to physician mentioned praying for me or some spiritual comment.

My husband came to the Shawnee Mission medical center quite delicate of his heart and immediately the attention was successful and excellent. Dr. Robbins and his team work the best! Jim, the night nurse from the 5th floor, and Melissa. The day nurse are excellent professional, dedicated and careful, explaining to the patient all his doubts. very grateful to everyone for their dedication and professionalism in such difficult times for us.

My daughter went to the ER Thursday for blacking out, chest pain and numbness in her left arm. The ER staff was slow but the doctor there was very attentive and concerned. Said she probably had a TIA or mini-stroke and admitted her to the cardiac unit. I arrived the next morning to find that no orders were in place for her. After seeing a nurse practitioner they finally order tests. When the doctors finally spoke to us that afternoon, they were rude and unsympathetic because the tests they ordered did not show evidence of a TIA. When the cardiologist first came into the room he said my daughter was getting an MRI of her arm but the discharge paperwork said it was done on the brain. He said he was releasing her because the tests were all normal - but she was being tested as we spoke. When I tried to explain that my daughter was still having issues, he threw his hand up in the air to like block me from speaking, and before I could complete my sentence told me that this could have been caused by acid reflux. What does acid reflux have to do with memory loss, heart fluctuations and arm numbness. We saw two doctors in CCU yesterday. Both times they only wanted to discuss discharge. When we tried to discuss additional tests or even some preventive measures they were cold, rude and acted like we were a bother and said they were discharging her. They didn't even want to discuss her condition or investigate further. They wouldn't discuss her symptoms or even admit it was possibly a TIA. They kept cutting off our conversations and focusing on discharge. One doctor even went so far to rudely say she wasn't going to "make up a diagnosis for us." Hurt and frustrated, we just keep silent and they discharged her. It's Saturday now and my daughter still is experiencing a headache, short term memory loss, general weakness and the inability to use her left arm. Strokes are serious and this hospital didn't take my daughter's very seriously. Tests or no tests, something is still very wrong and these doctors didn't care to find problem. If it doesn't show up on the tests they decide to do, you are out of luck. They don't listen to their patients. We will follow up with our primary for further tests, rehab and to discuss possible treatment. We also will never go back to this hospital. These doctors only want to do certain tests and boot you out the door. They will discharge you with the same problem you came to them seeking help for.

In the beginning AdventHealth seemed promising. Af...

In the beginning AdventHealth seemed promising. After 2 months it was clear that I had made a mistake. The operations manager in the laboratory has no clue how to manage phlebotomy operations or a laboratory for that matter. It has been in shambles for over a year! Staffing shortages are all too common. The manager refuses to hire, or will hire 3 or 4 people without consulting the supervisor, placing them wherever and hoping for the best.
It was common to have only 2 phlebotomy tech s for the morning run which created interdepartmental issues with clinical staff that relied on morning labs to begin their workday. The management team ignored all issues related to staffing retention and policy adjustment to better serve their personal scheduling needs. There were a number of times when there were 0 phlebotomy techs to begin morning run. I m not sure how the laboratory has not been investigated. Ive watched as each and every phlebotomist was systemically harassed by management to just get through when ANY issue would arise outside of the supervisor s administrative abilities.

The HR department is aware of the persisting issues and turn a blind eye. They have held no less than 5 exit interviews during my tenure, all of which explained in detail the issues stemming from the management team.

It has been 5 months since I ve separated myself from this hospital. I continue to receive calls from previous direct reports, inquiring about policy management and specific pre-analytic questions because management IGNORES THEIR CALLS?!?!

Again, this is not uncommon, but I fear patients are being put at risk due to the lack of knowledge among the management team.

These issues have persisted for over a year! I will never again consider this establishment unless new management is put in place.

I brought my daughter into the emergency room for a intentional OD. My daughter has seen a therapist and psychologist for over 4 years with no luck and has battled major depression, ADHD, ODD, and anxiety for about 5 years; however, the young male social worker was able to assess her in 5 minutes and he recommended impatient treatment. My daughter was transported to a mental health facility, but after we left, the State was notified of a possible child in need. If the social worker cared for the well being of my daughter so much, maybe he should of spent more than 5 minutes with her instead of flirting at his desk with all the nurses that were on duty. We did not refuse any medical observations or treatments, but they notified the State of Kansas anyways. If they would of taken the time to find out the facts, maybe they would of had the information to make better decisions. BTW, she was released in 3 days from the mental health center.

While my experience in labor and delivery was great mostly due to my L&D nurse, everything else has been sub-par. I was billed a full day worth of NICU charges when my child was admitted at 9:50pm. That s an expensive 2 hours...
Additionally I was charged $96 per bottle of dermoplast. How nice of them to make me a care package and send another one home without me requesting! Yes, another $96 dollar charge for something that should be $6.

Lastly, getting their technology in sync has been a nightmare. I still haven t been able to get my child s medical records online (seems like a simple request considering they offer this feature) and their billing department doesn t seem to sync with their payment processor. It would be my suggestion to look for a different hospital if you don t want to spend hours on the phone trying to work through everything on the paperwork end.

The doctor was horrible and didn t listen to anything I was trying to say and told me my pain spots where wrong!! Not to mention the last time I went there they missed my appendix ruptured and I went two months with it in my bony and children s mercy found it and by that time it was already ROTTED in side of me! Never going there again after that! Not to mention the communication between doctor and patient and even between nurse sucked!

I would not recommend them even if they are in Kansas that is supposedly supposed to be the best hospital. My aunt had a sleeve opposition there last year. Immediately got an infection after. Week being home. Now still has not lost one inch of weight and I warned her to do research first just because they are closer to her does not mean they are better. My other aunt had a neck surgery and now her neck is deformed and she will never be the same. People these are regular people like us that don t know what they are doing. Go to specialist only and top rated hospitals your life is worth so much more than a possible great outcome

As a person who chose to go here I m disappointed in my self. From the minute I walked in to the minute I left it was a terrible experience. The ER team took 11 hours to get me into surgery for a ruptured appendix. The nurses on my floor were clueless of my medical plan and I never was able to speak with my doctor. I had less than quality nurses and less than quality care. I advise anyone and everyone to seek a different hospital for any reason. I will never go to Shawnee Mission or advent again.

I was seen last Thursday evening in the ER. The wait to be seen wasn t horrible, nor was the turnaround for lab results. I did get more information from this visit than I had received from any doctor beforehand and am grateful that someone truly believed I had an issue going on and was able to prove it. However, I was advised that my primary care doctor was going to be receiving all of the information from my visit. I called my doctor today, nothing has been received. I also tried to call Shawnee Mission today to get copies of my own personal records.. I waited on hold for 15 mins. When I got to the correct department, a person picked up and hung up the phone immediately before I could even speak. I tried to call back and was advised that the office had closed for the day two minutes ago. That was super unprofessional as I HAD called prior to them being closed, and they HUNG UP ON ME to avoid assisting. Very disappointed. The next day I had called back to try to speak with someone about my issue and the lady on the phone interrupted me before I even finished asking with "That sounds like the Emergency Dept didn't do their job." So instead of helping me, she pushed the blame on someone else. I was extremely aggravated.

I am disgusted and appalled at the lack of professionalism, courtesy, and flat out rude belligerent behavior of the lady behind the check in desk. I hope she never gets the same treatment she gave my 90 yr old mother and the rest of my family.

My husband was recently hospitalized for 3 days with an infection. He was on the 3rd floor and I was very pleased with both nurses he had for the first 2 days. Susan and Lily were great, very thorough and knowledgeable. They also always made sure I was comfortable and didn't need anything and if I did had no problem getting it for me. Their Assiatants were also very pleasant and helpful as well. On the day he was discharged he had Jen and she did an awesome job as well we just didn't get to spend as much time with her as we did the other nurses. I felt comfortable in knowing if I wasn't there they would give me any details or changes that happened while I was gone. Being in the hospital is not the best feeling but knowing how well taken care of he was def helped ease my worries. He saw several doctors during his stay and they also were great and thorough and made sure that my husband and myself knew what was happening and when it would be happening. Thank you to the Shawnee Mission Medical Staff for everything you did over the last 3 days for my husband.

The OP location ER Dr was awful. Terrible bed side manner and very unprofessional. Dr. Prater has the attitude that they ll come back normal but we will run them. He is by far the worst doc I ve come across. He talks to you like a 2 year old that makes up symptoms and does not take what you re saying seriously. My wife was in this hospital on several occasions
Once she was there dr.kozad was the doctor.
She came in the room told my wife their was no more they could do for her and sent her home.
She was taken back to the hospital 3 days later,
Ended up getting a double transfusion..which was supposed to have been done the first time around.
Her hemoglobin level was so dangerously low she almost died.
It was a bad experience
Won't ever be back
Luckily now she is with doctors who treat her like a human being.
So I called the number provided
Was called back and asked for exact dates to prove
That a certain doctor was actually on duty at the time my wife received the poor treatment.
Shouldn't you have record of this?
Yes we have the records as you should as well

Wife and I had our babies here, twins. The NICU staff was amazing, 5 stars there.
The 2nd floor birthing center also amazing, very friendly and caring staff, very outgoing.
The 3rd floor, which is basically mom and baby was kind of drab and depressing for some reason, the rooms just didnt feel like they are up to par with the stuff on the second floor birthing center, I get it the babies out, you'll get your money now, why spend more on bettering the rooms for people on their way out? The nursing staff on the 3rd floor also didnt feel as helpful or welcoming to me and my wife.
The furniture for dad to sleep on was probably the worst thing i've ever slept on ever, and i've slept on my share of couches :P

Overall though the staff here is generally welcoming and helpful. I'm glad we trusted them to bring our beautiful babies into this world.

This morning we took my mother-in-law who is visiting from Arizona and complaining of severe chest pains to the ER. Since she has a pace maker and a-fib not to mention scared, we didn t want to risk her flying home. The ER staff was incredible! They took her concerns seriously, treated her with respect and provided such amazing care!! She was taken to a room immediately and take care of by an outstanding, professional and caring staff which included ER nurse Tara, ER Dr. Otis Miller, Cardiology NP and Cardiologist Dr. Heath Wilt plus X-ray and other nurses! As it turns out she was ok and was discharged after they explained everything to her with great clarity. I have heard her on her cell this evening with her kids and friends telling them that the hospital was so amazing and she wishes her hospital in Az provided the same level of care. Thanks you to the ER staff.

Can express how disappointed I am in the individual nurse practitioner on duty tonight in the ER. My wife went in for an extremely painful cyst, and while she waited an additional 45 minutes after the nurse practitioner was done for the prescription over heard the nurse make the comment after another nurse inquired about the prescription (mind you while they were all laughing and joking so no other emergencies were occurring at the time):

"Is she "AA", then she can wait a little longer"

Since my wife is African American is safe to say her time and health were not a priority because of the color of her skin. I will never again take any of my "AA" family to this incredibly unprofessional hospital.

The care was great, the cost is a bit much.

The care was great, the cost is a bit much.

My ER visit consisted of 3 laboratory services and basic vitals taken. The ER bill prior to insurance was +$4k. The PA bill prior to insurance was +$1k (the PA is billed by a different company.) Total prior to insurance $5,541.87, I was in the ER for less than 3 hours, possibly less than 2 hours.

Had to go to the ER because the AdventHealth Centra Care (urgent care) I went to a few days earlier couldn't get my lab results back before the symptoms got worse. The urgent care appointment consisted of 1 laboratory service and basic vital taken. The urgent care bill prior to insurance was $243 for an "Urgent Care Visit" and "Laboratory Services." I'm not sure why there is such a huge difference in cost, since they are owned my the same company. I was expecting a couple thousand dollars different, not $5k.

Service was good and speedy at the hospital. Lab test results usually come back in 4 hours at the hospital, according to the PA. It usually takes 4 days to get results from the urgent care.

I waited for less than an hour in the waiting room. All the staff members were nice. Everything seemed to move quickly and was clean. The PA called me with the results as soon as she got them, and answered all my questions over the phone.

I had to visit the Menorah hospital a couple years ago, it was probably $700 less for the ER Department. I assume their prices have increased, and are probably close to AdventHealth.

Had a scheduled x-ray because I've been getting really sick and doctor thinks it's my gallbladder. Talked to the scheduling people several times and not once mentioned they wanted 240 dollars up front for an x-ray. Advent should be up front on costs so people are prepared. I was there a couple months before for an ultrasound that I had to pay no money upfront. While I waited a half hour all the ladies talked about is what they were doing for lunch. Now I didn't get the x-ray so it puts my health at risk. Unprofessional especially for what they charge. And yes I have great insurance that I pay 400 dollars a month for and the want 240 more lol. Advent is just in it for the money.

My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma the beginning of April and has ended up in the hospital pretty much since his diagnosis. His oncologist Dr Kyasa is a soft spoken extremely kind and understanding person. He considers everything about the person to make the best treatment for his patients and their families. His nurses Sara and Nikki are kind and compassionate also. I have not met the others but I bet they are the same. We also met Dr Hughes and his nurses Leanne, Michelle and I forgot the 3rd ones name. They are also kind compassionate and caring.
The nurses in the hospital are all kind, compassionate, caring individuals. There was only one that we feel was average, but she was not a bad nurse she just didn't meet the higher standards the other nurses are at.
One person there that I want to mention by name is Christian, he works in transportation. My husband was sent down for a CT scan (he was not ambulatory) the xray tech said he needed to be on a gurney to put on the table for the CT. Christian did everything he could to help my husband not have to go back upstairs to have to come back down. He was very caring and went way above and beyond to help my husband. I hope whomever reads this, that is in authority there, will give him a raise and let him know he is doing an excellent job.
This is just the beginning of our journey with this disease but I wanted to put this here for now. I may make a comment again in the future.
Most of the people we have interacted with at Shawnee Mission Medical Center are very empathetic people.

We had a great experience from Friday night until late Sunday night with the weekend staff. They were friendly, attentive and anxious to help my husband. The minute Monday morning hit, the level of care dropped and demeanor of staff was unconcerned, inattentive, and annoyed with any request. There are are other hospitals we have a choice to use in Kansas City and we will certainly insist on a different one next time.

Avoid this hospital like the plague! The nurses are the rudest human beings on earth they do nothing but try to pull you and scare you into making the decision they want. Also anything you ask or say they twist around to try to make you look bad whenever you ask to speak to a supervisor or their boss you get that they don t have one or they re not here. Unless you just want more problems choose a different hospital!!!!!!!!!!

I just returned home from a two week visit. I stayed on the seventh and then the forth floor and I am so grateful for the excellent nursing staff they employ. Every need I had was attended to quickly and every conversation ended with " is there anything else I can get for you".

I gave birth at SMMC in 2007 to my first child. I ...

I gave birth at SMMC in 2007 to my first child. I had a wonderful birth experience with a caring nurse, doctor, and doula. My postpartum experience was less-so. I was given conflicting information regarding breastfeeding, was forced to wait for my baby to come back from the nursery for 2 hours after I requested her back (for no medical reason), and was encouraged to formula feed because no one seemed to have time to sit with me to help.

I went on to become a doula after that and was privileged to attend births at SMMC with clients for around 7 years. I worked with doctors, nurses, and anesthetists that were caring and attentive to their patients. Shawnee Mission was one of the hospitals that I encouraged families to give birth at, even though my postpartum experience was less than stellar. I felt the nursing staff provided the kind of care as a team that was compassionate and evidence-based. I just made sure my clients had additional breastfeeding support through breastfeeding support groups, private lactation consultants and additional visits by myself to trouble-shoot any questions within my scope of practice.

I have not been a doula for a few years now. I was asked to attend the birth of a close family member recently. I was excited to go back to SMMC because I felt it was a great choice for them. Without giving out a lot of private information about the birth, I will share how I was treated and how it impacted me.

The day nurse quickly moved from mom's plan of a natural-friendly birth, while the nurse on the shift before was completely supportive of moving while laboring, using the shower with a wireless monitor, supporting her emotionally and physically, etc. The day nurse quickly told her that she could not get out of bed to use the restroom, but every 2 hours; that she couldn't use a birth ball, get in the shower, etc. We made do, even though it was not supportive of her wishes and was not medically indicated by the doctor.

At one point, the mom was laying in bed and needed to shift her position. I was assisting her with shifting on to her side as the nurse walked in and started questioning me about my knowledge. I mentioned at this point that I used to work as a doula. She screamed at me about her license being on the line. I want to illustrate here that I was doing nothing out of scope as a doula at any point. I'm highly trained and credentialed. BUT, I was there as a close family member, not as a hired doula.

First, no family member should be screamed at like that. I stood in the corner and teared up a bit while I got myself together. Second, whether or not I was a doula shouldn't have made a difference. It says to me that she had a negative experience with a doula (and I get that can happen, doulas working out of scope is problematic for sure).

In the nearly hundred births that I have attended as a doula in multiple hospitals all over the region, I have never been spoken to that way. And to have it happen as a family member was doubly-disappointing. What should have been a happy day was marred by maltreatment.

I would highly suggest that your nursing staff be trained as doulas and trauma-informed caregivers. If you want to build a bridge between the doula community and your staff, please reach out to local doula organizations to set up panel discussions and education sessions for both. It should be a collaborative relationship that is mutually beneficial.

I still think back to the birth of my daughter and how awesome my nurse and doula worked together. Treating family members and birthing persons in birth as non-autonomous individuals can lead to trauma and higher rates of postpartum mood disorders. Humanized birth is possible. This nurse either needs some sensitivity training in the very least, or needs to move on to a different department. Labor and delivery is a complicated place to work as miracles are happening every day. Birth is what we call an ordinary miracle. It's an ordinary day for staff, but a miracle for the families that are birthing. It would be wise to remember that.

I had both my kids here, and I was very appreciative of the services provided, but the billing for the ER is atrocious. I had 3 ER trips in the last year for my kids (using 2 separate insurers), and SMMC either don't categorize items correctly for your insurance company, or they intentionally bill you wrong, and hope you'll just pay the difference. All 3 times I've went in we have insurance with a clear co-pay for ER, and SMMC always bills me well above it. I've spent hours working with them, to correct it. Total waste of my time. I imagine if all the people who have had this issue started billing SMMC for their time that was wasted due to mistakes (intentional or otherwise), these terrible practices would stop.

Wow out of 12 years going here for my and my family health problems or emergency. I have to say this please don't have nurses from other units work the E.R. To being she made a mess trying to start an I.V on my husband then I helped to clean the mess. She then tried to draw blood and pocked her finger and if I wouldn't of been seeing and I asked her did you pock your finger and she said no then she said I'll just use another needle took her glove off and sure enough she had pocked her finger. Then she didn't even know how to hold the beautiful needle thing to draw the blood and torched my husband hand. Then I was about say that's enough when she said ok I'll get someone else. Then she came back gives my husband his meds and we asked her what are they she said something totally different then what he actually got. Wth. What if he was allergic am trying to take knowledge to make sure. Ok that's the nurse. please doctor I know your tired but trust me when we go to the e.r is not because we like it. We have to pay for your services we not getting it for free. The doctor like any other doctor asked rate your pain my husband said like an 9 the doctor said oh really you dont look like your getting cut with a chainsaw. My husband so smart obviously said well doctor I wouldn't know because I have never been cut with a chainsaw. Wth if he saying his in so much pain why would a professional act that way toward a patient. Am so mad and frustrated. My husband was discharged in pain still and no real answer to his pain. So disappointing.

I had the pleasure of spending almost a week on the 6th floor at this Hospital. I had one amazing nurse by the name of Jennifer she work days and then just seem to know how to deal with me because sometimes I can be a little difficult. The food was not bad, the rooms were fairly clean, the overall staff was nice enough. I had a couple accidents while I was staying there that I do not feel we're attended to probably the way they should have been. But overall the experience wasn't too bad.

I LOVED the new birth center! I got to stick to my natural, drug free birth plan as close as possible even though I, surprisingly, delivered 7 weeks early. The jacuzzi was a plus, but the nursing care for myself and my son were above and beyond. The nurses helped a lot with breastfeeding, care and explained what/ why various treatments were done while answering every question I had for my son while he was in the NICU. I would definitely recommend to a friend!!!

I've had numerous Emergency services and Preventative services through the Hospital, and I've had few, if any problems and chose my primary care doctor from a staff doctor. This is a high-volume hospital, and your mileage may vary. My experiences have been good, for the most part, and I can recommend them.

My girlfriend was treated not so well when she had to come to the emergency room regarding a very painful medical issue. She had never been to a hospital before and was very nervous (and in ALOT of pain). The other times I have had to use their emergency services I have had the same issues with rude staff (who seems to be under the impression that everyone there is just trying to get a prescription for narcotics). I will not be back if I can help it.

St. Luke's South is a MUCH better facility.

Went in Saturday morning on 5/18 to have blood drawn. Arrived at 6:58 was waiting outside the door when lab tech cracked the door open and told me I had to register up front being she was the only one there. Walked back up to the register lights still off and needless after waiting 10 minutes I left. If a place opens at 7am staff should be there set up and easy to go prior to that.

Just wanted to thank the full AdventHealth team for their excellent care. From the time I was checked into their ER, to when I was admitted, and finally discharged, I had a full team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, dietary, and housekeeping, etc(I am sure I am missing others) that were very professional, thorough, and informative. They were quick to diagnose and even quicker to implement their plan. I was discharged around 4p on my last day and had my medicine delivered to my house before I even arrived home and a home health nurse at my house by 6p that same night to walk me through what I needed to do. Very impressed with the seamless communication and care across all of the different departments. Thanks again for the excellent care!

Came in to the ER with my one year old son yesterday. I expressed the pain he was in and asked if we could get help intimidatingly. After about 2 min ( which i thought was pretty quick) a woman came out and picked up his chart and asked why he was there. At the time of their conversation another family walked in with an elderly woman and the woman from the back stated that she wanted to wait and see what they needed. She then proceeded to talk and wait while my child cried from his pain. The elderly woman was taken to the back and my sons chart was returned to the tray. The way i saw it was that his injury was not as compelling as hers and he could wait, which was not a very professional message to send. After 10-15 more minutes of waiting we finally made our way back and he was seen. Apart from feeling like we weren't important enough the staff in the back was nice however, we will not be returning and we will be finding a new hospital for our new born.

My midwife made all the difference with my delivery of our first born at SMMC. The nurses were amazing, truly cared and took care of my baby and I. My rating unfortunately is knocked down a couple stars because of some of my experiences with the high risk doctors that I had to be seen by because of my health while pregnant- very poor communication. I don t know what I would have done if I hadn t had my midwife there to be my advocate and make sure there was clear communication between all parties. Now my midwife is no longer backed to deliver at this hospital, so I will definitely not be returning. I believe in a women s right to choose her birth experience and having a strong advocate, like a midwife, is my right. If SMMC wants to improve their labor and delivery and become a stronger hospital, they need to up their game and support midwives delivering babies. #optionsinbirth

PSA: If you want quality medical care and to be treated with dignity and respect DO NOT GO TO ADVENT HEALTH PRIMARY CARE AT SHAWNEE MISSION. We called and made an appointment, they did not inform us that the practice had moved buildings. We showed up to the old location to find it closed. Had to call back and ask where they were located. We informed them that Tjs appointment was at 9am, and we were already almost past the 10 minute window by the time we left the old building. The receptionist told us it was not a problem at all and he would still be seen since it was a fault on their part. So we go to the new building and try to check in. The receptionist tells us they will not see him since he is 7 minutes late. We tried explaining what we were told over the phone and she did not care, was EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional. Kept repeating that s our policy sir. Told us we could try elsewhere or wait for over a week for the next availability. So we had to request to see someone about this and wait 10 additional minutes to see an HR representative. Finally they agreed to see him. He explains to the Dr what is going on and she literally tells him deal with it and you ve been dealing with these issues for years I m sure you won t die . They refused to fill prescriptions that he has already on file through their offices that he needs ASAP, they are not a controlled substance or narcotic it is literally something he needs for health reasons. Then tried to prescribe him penicillin which he is extremely allergic to, because she doesn t know what s wrong but I can give you this for now . Her response when he said he was highly allergic was well if you have a reaction just go to the hospital . Drive yourself to the hospital while in anaphylactic shock?!? That does not sound like someone who should be practicing medicine AT ALL. We will NEVER EVER be returning to Shawnee mission and we will make sure everyone we know, knows how they like to treat their patients. If we could give zero stars we would.

Poor communication and made me feel like I was an inconvenience. I know there are sicker people in the ER than me but don t treat me like I am wasting your time. At ER for over 5 hours. Went in after I heard a pop and my knee buckled and cannot put any weight on it. Pain was at a level 7 and I was given nothing while I waited. I should have had my leg iced and elevated, but was just shoved in the waiting area in a wheel chair. After having xrays and seeing a nurse practioner, I got no information on what might be wrong with my knee. Was finally given a prescription to fill. First medication was 6.5 hours after injury and well after leaving the ER. I got a knee brace from the nurse but no instructions on how to use it, how long to where it. I was not referred to another physician. I am pretty sure I need surgery, but was released with not knowing what my next step is. I never saw the NP again after she said she would look at xrays. So I guess Monday, I will try to call around and see if a doctor will see me. I still cannot put any weight on the knee and no one at SMMC ER cared. Next time trying the new St. Luke's ER just down the street.
