Really disappointed in the hospital. My doctor wanted me to get a ultrasound and the hospital called to schedule it, then called back to verify and do my preregistration also to advise the cost would need to be paid before the procedure $950, I called Diagnostic Imaging and they quoted me $250, can't imagine there is a $700 difference. Called my doctor and had them send my info to DI, SMMC is a rip off!! Get a clue!!

When you are told something different EVERY shift ...

When you are told something different EVERY shift change, there's only one RN at night with no aide (so the RN wakes up the family to help with vials, changing, and repositioning in bed), and your concerns are dismissed I'm reminded of why this is a terrible hospital. They've "put in orders" for breathing treatments and no one comes. Orders are given to only give meds in soft solids and RN gives sleeping, dementia patient a pill with water (even though reminded not to). I was told it didn't matter as my grandmother choked and coughed on the pill and water. There is NO consistency.

Garbage hospital. No one cares, wait times are ridiculous, and finding a competent nurse is impossible. Please try justifying having a person sitting in the ER for 2 hours after having seizures, because that's apparently what this hospital is all about. Staff is rude and every time I've been there, doctors and nurses are just sitting around talking when things could be getting done. You're better off going to Saint Luke South, where they actually care about their patients and will give you amazing service.

We were just charged $1000 for an emergency room visit that basically only consisted of taking temperature, taking blood pressure, talking to the doc for 10 minutes, getting poked in the stomach, being made fun of, and being given a 20 cent pill.
Horrible.

I was recently in the ER vomiting blood from a tonsillectomy I had. It took them awhile to get me back, but it was 4 AM, so there weren't many nurses there. All of the doctors and nurses were very cordial and helped me in any way they could. The anesthesiologist was understanding with my fears of being put under, the surgeon was nice too, but strangely absent from what I remember after waking up. She was the only surgeon in at the time though, so she was probably in with the next one.

In the end, I healed up great, and am very glad I went to SMMC!

I certainly would recommend this place! I've been here twice..both long stays. The staff go beyond themselves for their residents..and each other! There have been times where I thought healthcare had just given up..but they defiantly have put the health..back in healthcare! Thanks to you all..my 1st and only for me and my family!

A very close relative of mine was very sick and taken to the hospital by ambulance. This relative is unable to walk and to get her into the ambulance they used her sling to transport her into the ambulance. Long story short, the Hospital can t find it!!! I hear this happens to so many people who are so ill and there isn t anyone that cares to think of a solution to keep patients belongings safe. I was supposed to hear back from a young lady at the hospital, who promised she would get back to me. It s been three days. Why does this have to be so complicated????

I would NOT recommend this hospital and we will NE...

I would NOT recommend this hospital and we will NEVER go back!! Communication between nurses and doctors is horrible. Listening to my mom cry and scream for 4 hours of intense pain, having the nurses say we don t know when she will get her procedure done and if they had not heard back in 2 hours they would call again. It took a family member having to knock on doors in Radiologjy before we got any attention. Finding out her IV had been leaking for over 24 hours. Heat in her room broke, took 4 hours to move her to another room and that room was dirty. With enough complaining and working with the wonderful patient advocate they must have flagged our file because after all of that we had great nurses! But you should get great nurses and doctors from the very beginning. I realize the nurses work so very hard and they have a lot of patients but instead of building a new multi million dollar family center why don t they hire more nurses so they are not so overworked!

I recently broke my ankle and had to go to the ER at Advent. Everyone was really nice and helpful and made sure I got out of there fast. I returned to Advent to have my surgery as well. Everyone has been so kind and understanding, especially with setting up payment plans I can afford.

I have had both of my babies at Shawnee Mission, my family has had surgery at Shawnee Mission, I myself have had surgery at Shawnee Mission and every time the care has been outstanding. Most recently I had an abnormal mammogram and had to go back for biopsy. The doctor took his time explaining everything so I knew exactly what to expect while he was doing it. He talked with me the entire time, telling me about himself & asking questions about me as well. The nurses and staff at the South Overland Park location were equally wonderful when I had my initial mammogram there. I am so proud to receive this kind of compassionate care every time I need care.

Every experience with SMMC I have to have confirms...

Every experience with SMMC I have to have confirms why SMMC is my last choice. I used to think it was one doctor or one practice but, it isn't. The problems at SMMC seem to be cultural. Why would a doctor not modify a prescription for an ointment when the initial quantity is insufficient? Paperwork! No one wants to to any, it seems! Easy fix, would have given me the comfort I needed. Instead, I had to be seen by another doctor who immediately prescribed what I needed - no interference! Alas, it wasn't an SMMC doctor but, Research Medical Center. Therein lies the problem, I should have started with and stayed at Research. I did know better. There are some wonderful people at SMMC, for sure but, not enough of them to keep me coming back under any circumstance.

Update: 9/10/2019: My mother-in-law's doctor called in an order to have her admitted at 9:30 am. Had to go through the ER she said. Knowing how horribly slow this hospital is, we didn't show up until about 12:30pm. I figured that should have given them enough time to set everything up. My mother-in-law sat in the ER for just under EIGHT HOURS before she was finally moved to a room. At the SIX HOUR mark, I spoke with the nursing supervisor, Sheryl, who told me she would be moved into room 5XX in the CCU "as soon as (she) gets off the phone." I took that to mean minutes. It would up being AN ADDITIONAL TWO HOURS!!! And, she was moved to room 8XX instead.

Nothing at this hospital has improved since my last HORRIBLE experience in the ER TWO YEARS AGO!!! I was one of two patients in the ER on a Monday night at midnight. I wasn't seen for FIVE HOURS.

This totals three horrible experiences at this ER over about 5 years. Changing the name didn't do any good. Seems things in their ER are getting that much worse. ZERO improvement in over FIVE YEARS!!!

No matter how busy they are or aren't, it seems, they're always "slammed."

I would strongly recommend going elsewhere, if you are able to choose.

I am leaving a one star for now unless my overall judgement of the hospital changes. I will leave my review as short as possible without revealing too many details. I have taken this issue to heart because it involves both my wife and first born child. A word of caution make sure to pay close attention to your meds I mean extremely close even if you think they will get it correct dont count on it. My wife and I gave med lists to both the maternity navigator and labor and delivery which were correctly entered in the system. Somewhere along the way the wrong dose was given which started with her first dosage given by the hospital. My wife was only recieving a 1/4 of her dosage while being at the hospital on days 1 and 2 at the same time she had to be placed on other medicines which were not forgiving in the least. Her BP was all over the place those 2 extra days and was given meds to prevent a stroke. A doctor finally caught the error and her bp went back to normal and didnt even need those nasty meds during labor. Son was born in week 36 but if the med issue never happened would of likely been born in late week 37. I am beyond angry because this should have never happened. The hosptial staff get empathy from me but not my sympathy. Where in the world are the safe guards. Nurses missed pharmacist missed computer system was faulty so I was told. Bottomline is how do we fix this going forward. We will not be a statistic and we will not let this happen to others we were lucky this time. I encourage everyone that has a safety issue contact the joint commission who gives periodic audits. I am so disappointed in this hospital I have always held it to a high standard my whole entire family has used them since the day it opened.

Visited the e.r. last week. Getting back to a room was incredibly fast! Seriously, thank you for not sticking us in a waiting room full of sick people! Overall the staff was very attentive and helpful. Initial diagnosis and treatment were quick but for some reason it took them forever to bring my daughter s antibiotic perscription back to us so that we could leave. Other than that, it was probably the best e.r. visit we ve had to endure.

The doctors are caring. However, it takes them forever to get things done. My wife had a buldging doc in her L5 and it has taken 4 months and we are still waiting for an injection. While in the same year I have a buldging disc in my C7 and St. Luke's has taken care of it in less than two weeks.

If yo u want to get well fast go somewhere else.

Advent is so AMAZING....NOT! I went to the ER because I was experiencing seizures for the first time. Yes. . . Multiple... No tests were run except for a neuro exam that I magically passed after being wheeled into the room in a wheel chair, I had to have directions explained to me multiple times and fell down on the floor.

This doctor if he actually was a doctor chose to help by offering me a shot of Haldol and sending me on my way... i politely declined the useless medication that is not for seizures and went home to seize comfortably.

Thank goodness this is a faith based hospital because anybody who seeks care at this establishment is definitely going to need jesus to see them through. I want to make it clear the only reason advent even got one star is because of the very caring and courteous security staff that was on shift and actually provided a service that day.

You missed sepsis. SEPSIS on an immunocompromised patient with an indwelling catheter. The ER doctor said, "Why are you here?" When I came in with a fever of unknown origin and unexplained pain. I went to Shawnee Mission several times for the fever- not ONCE did anyone run a blood culture. Thank God I went to Menorah or I'd be dead.

P.S. no need for the canned "we prefer to handle this offline" response. I truly don't care what you'd prefer

I went in there with an appointment, then on my way out asked if I needed to pay the copay (because historically I did, but this time they didn't have me pay). Well, they said no, but the bill I got in the mail said otherwise. Now, normally that wouldn't be enough to cause a 1 star review, but I've spent the last 45 minutes calling various numbers and speaking to various machines and people trying to pay the bill, but for SOME reason, it just doesn't seem possible.

I d advise anyone who loves their family memebers ...

I d advise anyone who loves their family memebers to come to this hospital over Saint Luke s on the Plaza, Research, Centerpoint & a few others on the Missouri side.
5th Floor Orthopedics:
Female nurse - First name unsure? Last initial M @1:50pm on Tuesday July 23rd helped me find my mother in-law s room when my boyfriend had wondered off & I couldn t find where he was. She was blonde if I remember correctly but I do not remember her first name unfortunately!!! She was super kind & that meant a lot to me because I ve stayed in 5 different hospitals in the Kansas City area & have been treated poorly in several of those other hospitals.

Abby D. in PT the same day was wonderful & extremely caring with my boyfriend s mother Virginia.
Melinda T. helped me learn how to change the bandage properly so when we went home I could assist my mother in law properly! Great team!!!!

Joi was the most thoughtful towards all of us. She asked everyone of us: myself, my bf, his brother, & their mom (the patient) how we were, if we needed anything at all. She was upbeat & just WOW! Really truly WOW! Talk about a professional that cares deeply about her patients & job! She even brought my service animal, Karma a bowl of water as we waited for our mom/mother-in-law to be discharged.
Great staff! Wonderful hospital!

Khali CNA checked her vitals & was just as upbeat & positive as the rest of this staff.
I truly wish that when I had my head on collision 2 springs ago that I had been sent to this hospital instead of Research Medical Center. I m thankful for Research saving my life but I wasn t treated like my mother in law has been treated here & I can t say enough how grateful I am to see a patient treated with the upmost respect, care, & attended to so well.

Anna V was very helpful as we waited to be discharged & my bf s mother needed a last dose of her pain medicine because she hadn t been able to be discharged quite yet & began hurting pretty badly. Anna made sure they got on top of it immediately! We literally only waited 1min!!! Thank you for treating my family member like a human being. After staying in 5 different hospitals these past 2.5yrs I ve seen the ups & downs of hospitals & can t tell you enough how impressed I am with the care here!!!

Ohndrea was super awesome getting us out to the car & was amazingly helpful escorting us out! Amazing conversationalist & another gleaming example of this hospital s expectations for employees who truly go above & beyond every surrounding hospital we ve been to.

The staff seemed happy with their jobs which makes me believe they care about their hiring process & the quality of whose on their team.

Before advent health took over Shawnee mission med...

Before advent health took over Shawnee mission medical center always gave me estimated billing that was accurate.

Since their takeover, I have not been given accurate billing estimates despite calling 4 times, speaking to a supervisor and telling them I thought it was incorrect (asking them to call insurance to double check) I was assured that the cost would be near one price, it came back almost double.

If you want accurate billing estimates don t go there. Upon getting a call center call from out of state, they were rude, so I spoke to the office here who were more polite but couldn t do anything. They said there was nothing that could do that an estimate was only that, but I called 4 times?

Apparently they don t input diagnostic codes in the system for procedures till after they are done which can dramatically change the cost. If they are agreeing with insurance company to one price why aren t they accurately aware of what that is before hand.

This was my first emergency room visit by ambulance, or any other means, to receive treatment. The doctor provided was cold, rude, and acted like she wanted nothing to do with me. I did not understand that reason she was so blatantly disrespectful and acted annoyed. The only good thing about the experience was the two nurses. I was so scared and had no idea what was going on with me. They did some tests, ran my blood, and provided a sedative. The next thing I know the nurse came in and said I was being released. The doctor never spoke to me about any of the test results, or communicated with me what they felt may have happened. I walked away completely confused. Hopefully, I never have to ride an ambulance again, but if I do, I will avoid Shawnee Mission Medical Center at all costs.

Worst experience ever!! My 77 year old Mom was taken by ambulance for a fall. She was being treated for a severe UTI infection days before. She broke her collarbone and rather than wait for family to arrive, she was released and made to take a cab home during an ice storm with falling temps (windchill below zero). Her visit was so short that we weren t given a chance to make appropriate arrangements for her. She wears leg braces and uses a cane. Neither of which, she had with her. The ER nurse, Erica, refused to let me talk to the Charge Nurse to rectify the situation. We were trying our best to get her transferred to KU where we originallyasked her to be taken. I was told by Erica that she had already called a cab and would not let her wait in the waiting room for family to pick her up. The next day, my Mom was admitted to KU.
After reading so many negative reviews and with our own negative experience, I strongly discourage anyone from taking a loved there.

I received care from Shawnee Mission over a year ago. Having never received a bill, phone call, or any contact, I assumed all had been taken care of through insurance. Today, over a year later, I received a call from a debt collection service trying to collect nearly $600 on behalf of Shawnee Mission. This absolutely terrible service.

My father, Leo, is 91-years old,, and a frequent visitor to the Wound Care staff at Advent Health in Shawnee Mission. I live in Atlanta, so I do not get to visit much. On 9/2/20, we took my father to see Dr. Newman for wound care treatment. I was so impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of everyone we met: Paula, Regina, Amy, Student nurse (from Cimarron, KS) and, last, but not least, Dr. Newman. They really take their time and treat him carefully and with respect. Thank you to everyone for the wonderful care you're providing my father! You're a great group and I wish you much happiness & success!

This is one of the most beautiful hospitals I have ever visited. The staff here is so friendly and helpful as well. It can be hard to find your way around this facility, though I have found that to be a good way to find cool additions to make this a place of refreshment as well. This hospital is faith based and open about it. You will find people to pray with if you are wanting that in your healing process. The chaplains are amazing here and represent a broad spectrum of faiths.

Horrible Horrible. If you want to live dont go here. My husband was seen at prairie star. That started this joke of a hospital. Then they said he needed emergency surgury. Ha. That was to reel us in. We got here, no follow up from prairie star, no doctor. Its now 5 hours after arriving at the main hospital. Fever is rising, pain still at a 7 and we have to fight to get a doctor to see him. The nursing supv. Ok. But that will take time to get a freaking doctor to see him. Are you kidding me. Im so close to calling an ambulance to take him to another hospital.
Update: Still here! 5 days later. 230 am. Took xrays (which I had to push for) at 1130 pm. Still no results! Still cannot get a doc when I want to talk to her (Cozad). To get anything done besides nursing care takes an act of God. Extremely frustrated. Nauseated for 8 hours, no relief and no plan.

I can't say enough good things about this place if you are having a baby. My daughter was premature and their NICU staff is amazing. So caring and driven to help children. I have two kids and they were both born here. One was premature (totally fine now) and the other was a full term baby. Although having a baby early is rough, the staff was outstanding. The staff was great for regular full term births too. If you are having a baby - go here! Their facilities are excellent as well, their cafeteria actually has good food.

The birth center is great, I had a wonderful experience having my son here. However, their emergency room is awful. I had a horribly traumatic experience in the past the led to a suicide attempt. I overdosed. My mom found me acting loopy and hallucinating. I was too out of it to even talk to anyone or tell them what I did so they drug tested me. My mom thought I was roofied or something. I tested negative for everything so they sent me home and told my mom I was on LSD. I was not on LSD and I'm lucky to be alive today. Have your baby here, the birth center is amazing, but I'd recommend going somewhere else to go to the ER.

They did stop the vomiting. Took xrays but no ct scan. Had no call button to get a nurse when things got bad. Never saw a Dr, only the PA. BEWARE THE EMERGENCY ROOM.

BEWARE THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
Up until our last visit to SMMC we thought it was a great hospital, however, this last visit makes us very wary of every going to their ER again. The treatment was alright, however, billing is a major problem.

We went to SMMC because it is an in-network hospital for my wife's insurance. She was showing signs of a possible heart attack. After taking my wife's insurance information (quite promptly done and initial money collected) the ER physician attended to her. We weren't informed that the ER doc did not accept her insurance, Humana (a common enough insurance company). Without that information, she couldn't make an informed decision to be treated at SMMC.

When the ER doc's bill came it was exorbitant. It's well known that patients without insurance pay 3 to 4 times what insured patients pay. That's what the ER doc billed us, as if we had no insurance because he didn't accept her insurance. The bill was almost 4 times what the same ER practice charged me (they accepted my Medicare) for a pulmonary embolism 15 months previously.

I would suggest that anyone going to SMMC ER write on the admission and insurance papers, which SMMC is so quick to provide, that you will not accept treatment from any entity that doesn't accept your insurance. I did that for my last outpatient surgery at the SMMC Outpatient center and it generated lots of comments from the staff, mostly negative, about the SMMC ER practice.

Update: Shortly after posting this review, the hospital contacted me -
within hours. I eventually ended up negotiating a reasonable ER Doc fee with the ER practice. It was along the lines of what Medicare paid for my visit. It's a shame that the medical practices initial charges are ridiculously exorbitant if you "don't have" insurance.

Overall good hospital. A high-volume, large patient center; there will be and are bad apples. Birth center was good; seems to be getting worse as the years roll on (less education and help, nurses more stretched and/or doing the minimum - facilities are top-notch, the staff is going downhill). Doctors are a mix of many exceptional ones (e.g. Dr Gaffney - there is a reason her schedule is packed a month out), several good ones, and a few poor ones (e.g. sexist Dr. MacMillian who likes to taunt people with anxiety disorders, dismissive Dr Buss who is great for sports and musculature but REALLY needs to be pulled from general practice). Have no evident way to provide feedback to the hospital except for a series of surveys they won't stop sending you post-birth. Facilities in general very good, and the staff seems at worst competent. However, I did look for and find someplace else for my general practitioner.

Recently visited Labor and Delivery at Shawnee Med...

Recently visited Labor and Delivery at Shawnee Med because I thought I was having contractions. My nurse was completely rude to me, I could hear her outside the door to the triage room talking to another nurse about how I was, "Just a gross, mean girl." and saying, "Why the f**k would someone come here and make up symptoms?"
While being monitored I noticed on the screen that my babys heart rate kept dropping drastically from 150 beats per minute to as low as 90, which was of concern to me due to the baby already having a heart defect.
Was told that my contractions were all because I was dehydrated (even though the urine test came back completely normal) and was told that I just had a baby who's heart rate liked to drop.
I am extremely disappointed in the care I received and am going to request to have my baby at a different hospital.

I delivered my daughter at Shawnee Mission and loved my experience. She came a few weeks early so spent a week in the NICU. The nurses and doctors took such good care of us! During such a vulnerable time as a new mother I knew we were in the best place. Of course my daughter was the focus, but all the NICU nurses made it a point to check on me too. I know if we are blessed enough to have another baby, Shawnee Mission is the only place for us!

I have be a patient here since the 1990s, and was very happy with them until about two years ago. I was seriously misdiagnosed and given medications that should have been on my allergy list. We discovered that when they transferred their records a few years earlier, they neglected to transfer my allergy list . This mistake had me sick with reactions for almost two months in addition to putting me in the Medicare doughnut hole. They finally let me see my records and there were several other errors in them as well. My records are now correct, but it really shattered my confidence in them.

My father was brought to the emergency room for dementia symptoms that included a few minutes when he passed out. I found that the nurse that helped us in the emergency room was excellent. The tests were run and No issues were found. The doctors wanted to admit him to the hospital for further tests. I expressed my opinion that someone with dementia will become even more agitated when in an unfamiliar environment.

That is what happened. I was asked to come back to the hospital and keep him calm because the calming medications were not working quickly enough.

After two hours, the medications had not helped his anxiousness. A physician was contacted and after waiting for his arrival, he denied any more medication. That is one thing. After talking with him for a few minutes it became obvious to me that this Dr. had not even read his chart. That is not acceptable. I think that doctors should actually have charts and facts before deciding on medications.

The nurses were wonderful. The doctors lacking in knowledge and professionalism. Also, issue with admitting a 96 year old with dementia after all tests came back with no findings was not the right call in my opinion.

We came into the emergency room with our son after he fell at the park, hitting his eye on one of the stepping wood stumps. They were too worried about checking insurance and getting signatures while my 7 year old had his eye bleeding out at the front desk. A good ER would have rushed my child back are started care immediately. After finally being seen, we have been waiting for over 1 hour after they numbed his eye to finish treating him for his injury. The ER was not busy while we were waiting, but they had plenty of time to talk to each other. I recommend against this hospital or any of their outpatient locations.

First thing I should clarify is the nursing staff is phenomenal. I then received my bill from the hospital which was ridiculous, but I kind of blame that on our insurance, and THEN I got the bill from the doctor!?!?!? What??? Less than 10 minutes with her and know real answers, in her mind is worth over $1000. I guess that's why they are "practicing" medicine.

A friend came to your hospital after calling 911, said KU was full and took them to you around 9pm. They were waiting to be seen for hours. She wanted to go back home but he insisted they wait. He was in bad shape. This is horrifying to need help now and to be just left sitting. Please choose different place if you can.

Got to the ER for chest pains and was in a room being evaluated in under 10 minutes. Had a procedure done and in a room in under 2 hours. Dr Patel was a great doctor. My nurses were top notch,Tandy, Stella and Elyse. They took great care of me. They also made my wife feel at home and at ease. There is no other hospital to consider than this one. Thanks for the great care.

We would like to recommend to everyone Prairie Star Emergency room and Shawnee Mission Medical Center because the excellent care we received!!!! We were in the KC area from Arizona visiting family when my husband required emergency care. At Prairie Star emergency room he was seen within 5 minutes of arriving and treatment began soon after (on a Saturday night)! The ER physician at Prairie Star quickly diagnosed the problem and began necessary treatment! Our nurse Cathryn was wonderful!!!! She put us at ease with a balance of exceptional, efficient nursing skills as well as compassionate care of not only my husband (the patient) but my daughter and I as well. Cathryn s gentle sense of humor put us at ease right away!!! She kept us well informed at all times! The transfer to Shawnee Mission Medical Center was seamless! At Shawnee Mission Medical Center we saw Dr. Wood, Oral surgeon early the next morning and continuing treatment was set up before we even left the hospital! Everyone was amazing! The hospitalist physicians we saw were kind and thorough!!! The nursing staff and support staff provided excellent care! When my husband ordered food after not eating for quite some time, the food arrived within 5 minutes!!!! Discharge was quick and easy!!!! We are so grateful to everyone to Prairie Star ER and Shawnee Mission Medical Center for their wonderful care.

Hospitality has improved tremendously, since the big name change. I would urge the ER docs to take a little better care of their clientele. It s annoying when they treat you like your needs don t matter. Asking questions to get to the bottom of why something is happening is suuuuper important. I think it s wild when someone says their stomach is in absolute pain and the diagnosis is NULL. Figure it out people, or find a new job. Being a doctor is not a hobby.

Stay out of this ER. I got there Saturday late. I was there for five hours to be told my right ankle was broken. I left. I wasn't sent with any discharge paperwork. I called Monday trying to see exactly what was broken. Suddenly the charge nurse pulls up my x-ray and now it's "sprained on top of an old break from the last two weeks". Which the hell is it? I'm really irritated. The nurse came in assumed I was another patient, I was really tired and had to correct him. Go somewhere else. Menorah does a great job. Saint Luke's South... great!

Love the new cafeteria! The staff has always been so nice to me whenever I've been there. I went today and stopped at the cafeteria before going home and it looks great. Food was good. I enjoyed my visit there.

I brought my mom to AdventHealth Shawnee Mission's ER last night. The entire team from our nurse, Jonathan, to Dr. Fulton, to the administrative staff were friendly, helpful and kind. They were generous with their time and I felt that we were getting quality care and their full attention. Our wait turned out to be much longer than expected, but we understand some of that is out of the clinicians hands. I wish we had a bit more communication along the way, as to what we were waiting for, what next steps were, etc., but the team was great about answer any questions we asked. Thank you for your kindness, patience and for turning what is typically a very stressful experience into a positive one!

Took my Mom to your ER on 09/18/2019 and the Doctor that seen my mom was the absolutely worst. Dr. Fanning had a horrible bedside manner and talked to my mom like she was stupid and unimportant. I have never encountered a Dr quite like her.

Absolutely horrible. Sat in ER for over 5 hours. Not one nurse, dr, etc ever checked on anyone. Complete run around when asking why and how they would take some back over others. I understand they have to put the worst cases first but this was by far unacceptable. Way too many choices. Will never use this facility again.

I love this hospital and it's usually my go to hospital but geez after tonight my perception has definitely changed. I took my niece who was in the middle of an inevitable miscarriage to the ER Well Dr. Finkle needs better bedside manner. He said quite a few insensitive things such as "well you're not pregnant anymore" and isn't very patient. Thank God our nurse Ciesha was awesome & understanding. Also it isn't professional for nurses to talk about other patients or people in their personal lives so loudly as if they're all out in a bar venting about the job.

My experience here was terrible. I went to the ER for a pain in my abdomen that felt like something was about to burst. The most terrible hospital experience in my life. It took 2 1/2 hours to get into a room and when I did I had to wait another 2 hours. They gave me a script for something you can already buy over the counter. For something they have already ruled out and could not be the case. The doctor was terrible and acted like I was there to steal pain medication. I will never come back here.

For the birth of my first baby and for our stay at the birth center at SM, I can honestly say I have zero complaints. I never thought I would be able to say that about my birthing experience! But my nurse(s) helped immediately put me at ease and ensure I had everything I needed, when I needed it and sometimes when I didn t even know I needed it!

I also have experience with the ER at SM and I can say that they were able to get me in quickly seen within minutes of walking in the door.

This is an update to my comments below and was wri...

This is an update to my comments below and was written today's date which is October 7, 2016. Please read of my experience below. And if you still decide to use this God awful institution, it's on you. The doctor did an incomplete job. I even sent the Patient Advocate a diagram of my colon given me by the doctor where he marked at about the 15-20% mark where he stopped checking out my colon. This in spite of the fact another older doctor on the same staff who has since retired just a few short years ago was able to check out my entire colon with no problem. I eat popcorn, tomatoes and other items with seeds on a regular basis and the supposed diverticuli has never caused me one second of discomfort. In fact, I had a nice juicy tomato today with my lunch. Yet this was the doctor's excuse for not completing the examination. They were paid thousands of dollars already by my insurance company but these greedy people are never satisfied. I received a letter today from the Patient Advocate denying my dispute telling me to pay up the remaining $461.00. This was after their telling me in early July they would settle my dispute within 30 days and then in September it would take them another 30 days. Clearly the right hand has no idea what the left is up to. Of course they will destroy my 800+ credit score if I don't pay them my last dime. I will admit I had a negative opinion of this terrible institution prior to my going there for my colonoscopy, but it was where this medical group (which will now become my "former" medical group) directed me to go. My brother died there under some very suspicious circumstances several years ago and neither myself nor family members have ever been given a satisfactory explanation as to the reason for his demise at the age of 78. He had an alcohol problem but was otherwise in excellent health when admitted. Within days of entering this hospital he was dead. Like I said...I can only share my experience with you. I had always heard negative things about their reputation, and now I have found out first hand they were well founded. If only I had listened and followed my gut feeling (no pun intended). You can come to your own conclusions, but neither myself nor any of my family members or people I hold near and dear will ever be seen anywhere close to Shawnee Mission Medical Center. We value our lives too much, and don't take kindly to having to pay through the nose for inferior or non-existent medical care. Peace!

Several years ago, my older brother had an alcohol problem. I did some research and found where Shawnee Mission Hospital had a detox center. I shared this with other family members and we proceeded to bring him there. Other than for the alcohol, he was in very good health. Several days after bringing him there he was dead. No one on the staff ever adequately explained to us how a perfectly healthy man died several days after entering their facility. And for that matter, I don't believe he was ever put in detox, but remained in the general hospital population. More recently against my better judgement I went there to have a simple colon exam several weeks ago. Whereby several years ago the doctor was able to explore the entire colon, this new doctor only examined about one forth to one third of it because of diverticuli.....the same condition I had several years ago. They billed my insurance company over $7,000, and now want me to pay some $460 insurance refused to pay. I sent them a dispute letter telling them I believe their receiving over $6,000 for a job not even completed was more than enough. I'm waiting for their reply. Finally....my family and I still mourn the loss of our brother who by all rights should still be alive today. And I still carry the burden of suggesting he go to this particular hospital. Peace!

When you show up for surgery, they spring a document on you that you must sign. Read it carefully! You MUST agree to let them videotape you and your procedures and share it for science . They will not allow you to modify the agreement. If you want the surgery you came for, you have to completely give up your privacy.
Don t be surprised if you see your face and body on YouTube!

Pretty surprised to see at the main ER entrance an essential oil diffuser with a MLM brand. You never know when an infant/toddler or someone with a compromised respiratory system is going to have to walk through the ER, and the oils could do more harm then good.

The standard for nurses in the Birth Center is go above and beyond the call of duty. I am a hard stick when placing an IV and terrified of needles. The nurse talked to me about it and then instead of trying herself called down someone who very rarely has trouble placing an IV. Together they got me through the process with very little pain.

This was my 4th child, but first C section and I was not looking forward to it, but the anesthesiologist talked me through the whole process and was the comforting voice for both me and my husband through the surgery. I can t say enough good things, from NICU to Birth Center our stay was awesome and I am very glad that I had each of the medical staff I had. They made a potentially overwhelming experience easy and as stress free as possible.

Horrible Hospital. Drove from Wichita, Kansas to be seen here, that was a mistake. Staff in the ER are rude. Walked in there looking for a room, Nurses and Doctors looking at me not offering any assistance. Room 12 in ER has Bugs.
I am not sure if the staff has been trained on AIDT, some walk in without introducing them selfs. I wonder if they believe in the greeting the visitors and patient. I would not recommend this place to any cancer patients as my wife treated here. If I could I would score our stay as -5.

Just an FYI, this hospital will sell your medical debt very quickly to Kevin B Wilson s debt collection agency law firm. This makes it very hard to use HSAs to pay off debt tax free, since it s no longer through a hospital but a debt collection agency.

I have had just a couple simple questions for the SMMC billing department and they have been extremely rude every time. It s as though they see you as a low life as soon as they see you re in the red, rather than as a potential future customer trying to pay medical debt in the most cost effective way possible.

I will choose another hospital in the future just from dealing with the billing department.

Oh and a lovely surprise $1,000 facility fee they charge. That was a fun one.

HORIBBLE! Don't ever take your child to this hospital! My son went to the ER because he couldn't breath and they treated him for anxiety and he does NOT have anxiety! Two physicians saw him and failed to treat him for a sinus infection and for his breathing. They won't acknowledge their mistake either. NEVER AGAIN

I just got my first real experience in why people ...

I just got my first real experience in why people complain of our healthcare system. I am a logical person that tried to put my emotions to the side when attempting to reach a conclusion. I cannot logically understand why they charged me an amount 5 times greater than what is advertised on their own website. My daughter was at their emergency room for 90 minutes because she had a dramatic headache. In fact, she felt back to her normal self after she puked before seeing the doctor. My wife asked that we go home at that point but the doctor insisted on a CT scan... now I see why! The charge is nothing short but legal robbery. Don t take my word for it. I have constructed a case and I will fight this until the end. See the pics below of what they charged us vs what they advertise on THEIR OWN WEBSITE!!! I will change or delete my review when they call me to resolve this in the correct fashion, by simply being FAIR and transparent.
