Diagnosed me with a serious hereditary cancer synd...
Diagnosed me with a serious hereditary cancer syndrome and offered me a mastectomy. Prepared for the mastectomy and in the final appointment an inexperienced doctor told me that they would be using implants (instead of the planned fat removal from my abdomen). He was smiling away. I said this was not what was planned, why the change at the last moment. He said that this was decided in a multi-disciplinary meeting. I asked to speak to someone senior. Waited for ages only to find that the doctor had got it wrong, everything was going ahead except that the operation would be done in two stages. Then just a few days before the operation I was called in and told it was cancelled. The surgeon was rude and they now were back tracking on the original diagnosis of a hereditary cancer syndrome. I was now left trying to get my head around all this. No apology. Apparently the genetic test had come back negative. Well if the genetic result was so important they should have delayed the diagnosis and delayed putting me on a mastectomy path. The shock for me and my family didn't seem to concern them. They decided I was still at risk of hereditary breast cancer so said I should have annual scans, but they have twice forgotten to call me for these, leaving me chasing them. At my last visit they said they wanted to discharge me from the hospital and leave me to be seen by the national breast screening programme. They previously tried to discharge me saying to my GP I hadn't turned up to my appointment, when no appointment had been sent to me. I am expecting to be discharged at the end of this month even though they have forgotten to call me for my scan last February. Some of the staff have been very rude. Fancy backtracking on someone's diagnosis when they about to undergo a mastectomy. My case has been mismanaged from beginning to end. If I did get breast cancer, or any other cancer, I hope never to have the Royal Marsden manage my case.
