Diagnosed me with a serious hereditary cancer synd...

Diagnosed me with a serious hereditary cancer syndrome and offered me a mastectomy. Prepared for the mastectomy and in the final appointment an inexperienced doctor told me that they would be using implants (instead of the planned fat removal from my abdomen). He was smiling away. I said this was not what was planned, why the change at the last moment. He said that this was decided in a multi-disciplinary meeting. I asked to speak to someone senior. Waited for ages only to find that the doctor had got it wrong, everything was going ahead except that the operation would be done in two stages. Then just a few days before the operation I was called in and told it was cancelled. The surgeon was rude and they now were back tracking on the original diagnosis of a hereditary cancer syndrome. I was now left trying to get my head around all this. No apology. Apparently the genetic test had come back negative. Well if the genetic result was so important they should have delayed the diagnosis and delayed putting me on a mastectomy path. The shock for me and my family didn't seem to concern them. They decided I was still at risk of hereditary breast cancer so said I should have annual scans, but they have twice forgotten to call me for these, leaving me chasing them. At my last visit they said they wanted to discharge me from the hospital and leave me to be seen by the national breast screening programme. They previously tried to discharge me saying to my GP I hadn't turned up to my appointment, when no appointment had been sent to me. I am expecting to be discharged at the end of this month even though they have forgotten to call me for my scan last February. Some of the staff have been very rude. Fancy backtracking on someone's diagnosis when they about to undergo a mastectomy. My case has been mismanaged from beginning to end. If I did get breast cancer, or any other cancer, I hope never to have the Royal Marsden manage my case.

I visited this hospital and their services are very excellent and the hospital has a second branch in the Sutton area and needs attention to the branch where I booked your appointment. I missed a necessary appointment because I did not know that there was a second branch for them.

This is an absolutely brilliant hospital. I truly believe this is the best hospital in the UK. The staff are all well-trained and are so compassionate to the cancer patient. They treat all patients alike and are the nicest, most helpful, warm hearted and courteous people I have ever met The Heads of Department who are expertise in the Cancer field are well well above the norm. They empathise with the patients and treat patients with tender loving care. They give a lot of time to each patient and ensure the patients get the best treatment. I was warded many times and the truly excellent care given to the patients in the ward is unbelievable. The Physiotherapy ( Ms Lucy ) and the Radiotherapy Department needs a special mention as they are so so tender treating the patients with their expertise. i cannot thank the Royal Marsden enough for what they have provided to treat my Sarcoma. Cutting edge treatment Everyone in the Sarcoma Department needs a special mention especially Ms Aisha Miah, I am truly blessed to have met her.. The surgeons supporting this amazing Department are top notch and truly wonderful especially Mr Dirk Strauss and Ms Jasmine Winter Beatty.Without a doubt, number 1 in my heart. The staff in the Radiotherapy are so so dedicated and truly incredible. The Royal Marsden is a stellar organization for anyone to be associated with, be it an employee or a patient. To each and every one of the wonderful, compassionate people who are part of the Sarcoma team, thank you, thank you, thank you! You all let me enjoy some more wonderful loving years which I am going to treasure with my family forever and you all have my heartfelt gratitude.

Completely misdiagnosed my mother in law for the t...

Completely misdiagnosed my mother in law for the type of cancer that the Marsden were over 90% sure she had. It took from April 2019 to end of June 2019 for them to actually determine that she has a very common cancer. Within this time frame they had also confirmed she would not have very long to live, very bluntly too by guessing from scanning what this type of cancer was that they thought she had.

Only by chance they said they would do another biopsy to be sure it was this and turned out it is a common cancer.

As she has type of cancer that is treatable (if caught early), they basically discharged her from their care and transferred to our local hospital. During this time it was a lot of work getting all information across to our local hospital.

Both our local and Kings College Hospital are rather confused as to how the Marsden got this so wrong or even thought she had this rare type of Sarcoma.

I definitely think that if they noticed the exact cancer it was from the beginning, this cancer would have been treated and she would be in remission now.

Being as this is one of the UK's leading cancer specialist hospitals, I cannot comprehend how they managed to unidentify a common cancer.

Appalling hospital service and no support either throughout our time at this hospital.

I have just been in the Royal Marsden for 5 days for major surgery for cancer. I am very thankful to my consultant Prof M Thomas for ensuring I had my surgery there. Throughout diagnosis, surgery and post surgery I cannot fault any part of my care. Consultants/doctors kept me fully informed of what to expect and I felt as comfortable as possible given the situation. At no time was I given reason to doubt I was in the best and most capable hands. The nursing staff were extremely professional, efficient and empathic. The hospital was immaculately clean. Catering was really good although no doubt I was spoiled a bit having a private room though employment insurance. I cannot thank everyone I came across enough for the excellent care I received. Post op and Critical care were brilliant. Special thanks to Prof Thomas and colleagues, Eleanor post op, Gill Critical Care, ward - Aileen, Janet, Jonthan, Cynthia and Leana (catering) and of course the cleaners. Sorry dont recall all names was a bit woozy.

The Royal Marsden I think is able to live and survive off it's reputation. My daughter thought she was going to get the best care in the world unfortunately she should have stayed at the Kings College (who said she had a good life ahead of her with treatment) because the Royal Marsden was dirty and my daughter became infected and subsequently pain relief was was almost none existant without the intervention of family and friends who insisted and monitored the pain that my daughter was going through not the nurses or doctor. My friend told me I could stay with her whilst she died The Royal marsden failed to tell me I could sleep there 24 /7!! Why didn't they tell me?? I was not in any fit state to think straight. Finally they did not put her in a chapel of rest for me to see after she had died!! Shame on you Royal Mardsden you have millions to ensure this never happens again. Also Macmillan Nurses where were you when the snow stopped you getting to her in Brixton? the rest of london managed but you failed to get there?? Guess you both get too much money to care.

Top staff. Many professional dedicated nurses and doctors at all time night and day always with a smile . I cannot be more grateful for everything they did for me and so many others like me. In one of the hardest moment of someone's life the relief and trust in them and amazing support has been absolutely first class. All of them cleaners, volunteers, catering staff. These people are special, there is not wage high enough to pay for their dedication.

After my GP screwing up in establishing I had canc...

After my GP screwing up in establishing I had cancer and then an extensive nightmare through two typically overrun NHS hospitals, I spoke to a friend who 5 years ago was diagnosed with Lymphoma. The RMH saved his life, but more than this he told me they showed the way a hospital should be run with staff that care and a general relaxed vibe about the place.

I was referred at a time of anxiety having seen my delay from first visiting my GP and being placed on a treatment pathway with 5 months later. I am three months on from arduous and brutal treatment - what can I say? Everything my friend had told me is true. Staff who care and are not impersonal, a relaxed vibe and knowledge and professionalism throughout, from nurses to the top consultants.

I still have a way to go, but I cannot thank all at RMH enough for the treatment I have received to date. It will never be forgotten and as soon as I am able I will be a big emphasis in my remaining years to fund raise and help them. The NHS gets kicked so much, yet there are establishments out there that lead the way and show how it can be done. Politicians take note. Top rate for RMH.

For those of you that do not know, the RMH as do ma...

For those of you that do not know, the RMH as do many other hospitals in and around London, will provide transport for outpaitients who have appoinments at the hospital but face certain issues on how to get to this appointment, though this service is subject to meeting the hospitals requirements. Yesterday my client and I arrived for his 16.30pm afternoon appointment at the RMH. Due to his vulnerability and because he has visual impairments and travels about in a wheelchair he requires that extra support of the hospitals transport. Once finished,an hour later(17.30pm),we went down to inform transport that we were now ready to return to his home. The lady at the desk informed that due to the lateness in time most of the drivers had left-but would do her best to try to get us transport-this coud be a 90 minute wait.Begrudgingly I accepted, cos to be honest we had no alternative. My client lives 2 hours away and a cab would be very expensive.Anyway after a very long wait (18.50pm)she finally informed us that a driver was indeed turning back from Vauxhall London to do the job! The transport lady herself had actually finished at 18pm but declined to go home until everyone waiting that required transport received as such.(she too was accomodating and polite)When the driver arrived he was polite, helpful, chatty and apologetic! He got us back to my clients home by 20.10pm and really was one of the nicest guys you could meet.Again when at our destination,he again was very supportive towards my client and with the same tactile support offered earlier he returned that same type of care.I just want to say to the RMH you have two hardworking and loyal staff team in transport and they are Lilly & Tony. Thank you so much for going above and beyond our usual job post to help and support us last night and for really being one of those people you can truly rely on,in a moment of crisis-your a team player.Thank you LILLY & TONY,you're doing a great job and we salute you

I would be dead by now if it wasn't for the Royal ...

I would be dead by now if it wasn't for the Royal Marsden, so I can't give it anything else than 5 stars. That doesn't mean that there's not room for improvement. I was diagnosed in 2008, and my observations below are based largely on my experience of it at this time.

Like any large organisation, there are good and bad things about it. The medical care from the doctors and senior nurses is second to none. You're getting some of the best treatment in the world, and if you're an NHS patient as I was, you're getting it for free. It is easy to forget that this system does not exist in most other parts of the world.

That said, there are definite areas for improvement. Junior nursing (and housekeeping staff) are often sadly lacking in their pastoral care abilities (some are just plain rude), compared to their more well-qualified counterparts. I also had the misfortune to have some really quite shocking treatment from some locum nurses, who perhaps should not be put in charge of the care of patients with such acute needs. And the food - really? I know it's got to be difficult, but you can't expect to facilitate a speedy recovery with this level of food. Pastoral care from the breast care nurses ranged from angelic (no, really. They go in there every day and they're that wonderful to strangers, every day. I am in awe) to tragic (if you're going to make an appointment with me, have the decency to remember it).

But I tell you this, not to cast aspersions, but to help you set your expectations. If you know what to expect then you'll be more able to take the small stuff in your stride. Lets face it, if you're going there, you've got your hands full anyway with the big stuff. I was lucky to be a patient at the Royal Marsden. I realise I might not be here if I'd had treatment anywhere else. If I'm unfortunate enough to need their help again, I wouldn't hesitate in choosing them.

I have been attending the Marsden for two years for cancer treatment, previously attended a hospital in Surrey for the same condition. The move to the Marsden saved me from having a stoma as planned by the Surrey hospital. Instead they invested time and expensive treatment that has allowed me keep my bladder. The staff are without exception kind, skilled and professional.

Very unhappy about a mix up with my husband which resulted in a letter with facts that were not meant for him. I suddenly became his cousin and my husband supposedly left the country and nobody knew when he was returning, according to a Locum Specialist Registrar. Nobody was more surprise than my husband, because he has not left the country for 5 years. Since we are talking about CANCER, I hope they do not mix up results with other patients too.

Brilliant hospital where even national health patients are treated as human beings with courtesy, care and excellent treatment.
Never had to wait more than 5 mins over appointment time for consultation and treatment, and I was NHS!. BRILLIANT.
WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WITH SUSPECTED CANCER. WELL WORTH THE JOURNEY.

Unfortunately I am altering my review from 5 stars...

Unfortunately I am altering my review from 5 stars to 2, my mum was transferred to Guys Hospital as she has a very rare Lymphoma Cancer, Royal Marsden was ok but compared to the last 2 weeks at Guys Hospital my mum is FINALLY on treatment and coming back to her normal self. Im not happy that it took so long to transfer her from her diagnosis in June 2018 to September 2018 and her NOT having or being offered temporary treatment or even pain killers! GUYS GAVE HER BOTH IN UNDER 2 WEEKS! And her cancer lumps have shrunk into oblivion!

I am also unhappy with the mac millian nurses who are supposed to be there for patients to call and discuss their worries? Everytime we rang the allocated nurse was either not in or on annual leave! Disgusting!
I will be mentioning this to cqc for the hospitals future inspection.

We also tested the support nurses at Guys Hospital and spoke to a nurse straight away on all 2 occasions!

Excellent hospital!

Nasty neighbours at Dove House at the back entrance. I was parked up waiting for my mum who has just been diagnosed with cancer and when she came to the car I ran in to use the toilet. Whilst inside a HORRIBLE disrespectful white male who owns the AUDI KS11 HYX BLACK.

Bumped my car and didn't apologise to my mum, but instead argued with her saying ARE we residents.

A message to that resident LOOK on the windscreen before commenting as it was MY CAR you hit and we have a DISABILITY BADGE.

According to him thats what bumpers are for? Well my in-car camera shows differently.

One of the very best cancer hospitals in Europe. The quality of the doctors and nurses is just outstanding and it operates at the cutting edge of science. It is often dealing with the most seriously ill patients but it still manages to keep a positive, cheerful and friendly atmosphere. 5 stars isn't enough; it's one of the UK's finest institutions and should be the first port of call for all cancer patients able to access it. The UK should be proud of it and London is lucky to have it.

Reception has informed me of a wait time of more than 2h arter I already waited for 20min preconsutation even though I have booked an appointment. No advance notification, no message in the morning, no advance call. The whole process of getting straight forward ultrasound scan is overly complicated with unnecessary steps, apparently it can take here up to 4h to complete an ultrasound process, when the ultrasound itself take a few minutes...the rest is admin, preconsutation (exactly the same as with GP, no difference) and wait time, then I have to explain in detailed way to 3 people all my symptoms even though my GP already noted them (it means 4 people in total need to hear the same thing to get a simple 5min scan). Very inefficient and stressful, especially if you take time off work or other things. No wonder NHS budged is stretched if 4x consultation and paperwork needs to be financed instead of 1x...

Having suffered at the hands of our local NHS Trust, we know for certain that the Marsden offers the finest level of care you will find anywhere. Its not just the surgical and medical skills, its the empathy of each and every member of staff we have met there over the past year. Its the little things that don't actually cost anything - like the Nurse who just bothers to lay a hand on your arm and ask how you are doing today, the guy taking the meals round who bothers to remember you like strawberry yoghurt, the surgeon you meet in the corridor who isn't too high and mighty to open the door for you or the receptionist who gently advises a sit down and a cup of tea. Its an awkward old fashioned building that must often be difficult for staff to work in, but they do it and they do it with skill, kindness, compassion and efficiency. There are not enough words to thank each and every one of them.
